OS X Technologies :: IMac Won't Start After Changing Permission

Intel Mac wont start after I changed my hard drive permission to let me read and write, then I clicked apply to all enclosed files. I turned it off no problem. Then it never started up again in os x. The grey screen with apple logo appears,then after a minute it restarts, and will keep doing that if i let it. I can start up in windows xp, but I don't know how to do anything in windows xp that will affect os x. I can use the hard drive in target mode. I use a macbook to view target disk. I do not have the os install disks.

How do I stop intrusive apps from running at startup/login? I checked both libraries > StartupItems and System > StartupItems.
Long version + rambling:
So there is this intrusive app that I installed, and it keeps adding a folder in my Documents folder. Everytime I delete it, it comes back on startup.
I thought it would be much easier to find the file responsible for starting this app on startup, but I was disappointed. But I'm betting it's not as difficult as searching the Windows registry.
Anyway, it's not among the 'login' items, and I searched the main Library, and my User Library, and even the System's 'startup' folders, and found nothing. So what's the deal?
Before you make any accusations, the app I'm using is Parallels, and yeah, there's probably some preference I could change to stop it from doing that, but I would like to do this manually, and learn more about how OS X works. I want to stop the app from running without my permission when I log in. (I'm stubborn, and want to show this app who's boss around here!)
I'm thankful that in OS X, apps are much less intrusive than Windows ones, and they're only intrusive when I give them my password, from my experience at least. Am I right? But goodness I hate how intrusiveness followed me here from Windows. It would have been a deal breaker, had I known how many files (hidden or otherwise) it was going to scatter across my tidy Mac.

Recently I've been frustrated by having Mac OS X automatically downloading all software updates without asking. Sometimes I am on an internet connection where my downloading is limited and I don't want to be wasting the bandwidth on multiple updates that I don't need that urgently. I feel like earlier versions of OS X never started downloading the update without your permission to start the updating process. Is there anyway to ensure that the OS doesn't perform such tasks without having to resort turning off my wireless? I'm running 10.5.6 on a MacBook.

I manage a small deployment of different macintosh products and I currently have to run 5 different images so that the background images look right on all the various resolutions. I have been working on a piece of applescript to prompt the user on first startup to select their hardware type to apply the proper background image but I am running into a few issues. Firstly the method I am using limits me to three options and I cant seem to find any documentation on how the list function works..Second, I keep getting errors saying the files can't be found. Is anybody know if there is a way to switch to a particular "input source" (keyboard) with a command line? (or with Apple Script).
Not switch to the next or the previous, but to a specific one. Like switch to "Canadian French" or "Us English".

I have an little program that iniciates an apple script from an arduino, so when the arduino prints a letter it gos from one video to another and back and fourth between videos in Itunes.I would like for the videos to start from the begining everytime, However, they always start where they left off. Macbook Pro running Lion V 10.7.4Â .After a hard drive failure this weekend, I restored frm my most recent backup.Unfortunately this did not include svn, host file changes and some other fairly easy to correct things.The one that has been giving me trouble for the last 8 hours is mysql. I have gone through and removed mysql (multiple times) and did fresh installs. Each time I was getting the error:Â
ERROR 2002 (HY000): Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/tmp/mysql.sock' (38)Â
Even after changing my /etc/my.cnf file to point to var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock I would get these errors. Â
Are there multiple locations where mysql points to /tmp/mysql.sock? Â
I am at a loss of what to do. I have uninstalled reeinstalled. Tried many different solutions all to reeive the same error.Â

I first had was the computer names for the iMac was set to MacBook and the actual macbook names switched to MacBook (2). I figured out how to change that, simple enough. On going problem is that now on the iMac I am set to admin but cant view other users folders they have the minus sign in the bottom corner of the folder and some folders and files have the Name "Staff" for permissions. The only users should be myself "TJ" and my wife "Laura". The MacBook is fine with just her and I as users but the iMac is goofy with "staff".

I have two imac computers networked both running Leopard OS. Mac1 connects to the 2wire ADSL router via Ethernet. Mac2 connects via wireless. Wireless signal is strong. Both computers can connect to the Internet. Both computers can share files with each other. Firewalls set to allow all incoming connection.
Cannot ping from either computer to the other. Error message: Permission Denied. Using the terminal for pinging has the same results. Have not found a solution search the forums. Would like to solve this problem before attempting to add a windows xp laptop to the network.

I have a mid 2009 iMac that doesn't have Thunderbolt display, but has a mini-dvi port.Will the Thunderbolt cinema display 27" still work when connected to this mini-dvi port? I thought it would be better going for a thunderbolt display monitor rather than the older version, so when i upgrade my machine in the future it stays compatible.

I have an old palm that I still keep data on. Am waitiing for the iPhone5 to come out then will transfer over the data. Just bought a new iMac 10.7.4 and when I went to back up the data it said that it was no longer supported. I have my old iMac still and I can back it up there but want to sell the old one. Is there a way to transfer at least my contacts data from my palm to somewhere on my new Mac for backup until the iPhone 5 comes out?

I'm a little confused about the resolutions of the iMac 21.5 inch compared the iMac 27 inch.
In terms of watching HD content, which is better, as one is 1080p so it is perfectly formatted for this type of content but the other is higher (2560 by 1440 pixels), will this mean it is better because there are more pixels or worse because it is a different size? I'm a little confused about this. Also is it possible to change the resolution to 1920x1080 on the 27 inch? What will this do exactly? If I were to apply a 1920 x 1080 wallpaper for example to the 27 inch iMac will this look better/worse?

I dual boot my iMac using Boot Camp and I'm having problems deleting a bunch of files in my Trash. A short history. I purchased a OWC external hard drive case and I've been going through my old hard drives which originally were used in my Windows XP computer. The drives were contaminated with Windows viruses and so I installed the drives one by one in the OWC case and proceeded to delete files and programs which I didn't need in each drive while in OS X and keeping the files I wanted to save in each respective drive. Now what I'm faced with is a Trash bin filled with Windows XP software (including Windows XP itself) which I cannot delete because OS X says I don't have permission to delete those files.

Since as long as I can remember, my August 2007 aluminium iMac always wakes up as soon as I turn my lamp on or off. Maybe, one in seven nights it won't wake, but most of the time it does.
It's a real nuisance having it do this, and to add to the annoyance, the iMac randomly wakes up sometimes, day or night. I can be in bed and it will just come on, all systems go, or get in from work one day and find it's been on since 10AM that morning (wasting energy).
I've reset PRAM and SMC (whatever they're called) about a thousand times, I clean installed Leopard 3-4 times and just did a clean install with Snow Leopard (I didn't upgrade, I wiped my HD and installed fresh) yet it still happens.
It's totally beyond me why it just decided to wake itself up every now and again and also why 90% of the time it decides to wake up when the lighting conditions change

I have a G5 iMac - 2.1 ghz, 20", 250gb hd and 3gb ram, but it has been having problems starting up and it is also going to sleep midway through a task or at random times totally unprompted.
It now almost never starts up first time (I keep the iMac mains power lead always connected and the mains electricity supply turned on at all times now)- sometimes I will get the 'Start-up Chime' and then the cooling fans start spinning very loudly and then after a few seconds the iMac stops the start-up routine, but often when I try to start-up I don't even get the 'Start-up Chime' and I have to leave it for some time before trying again.
I can also now only get the iMac to run as a Firewire Target Disc by starting up with the T key held down and then using an old G4 (400mhz) Powerbook Titanium as the screen/keyboard by using the iMac HD as the startup disc for the Powerbook but this is obviously just a temporary work around.
I have also tried backing up all my data, and reinstalling the Mac OS X onto the iMac but the iMac still will not start-up normal and I still have to use it just as a Firewire HD.

I have an Intel IMAC, which is now out of warranty as I have had it for 16 months (and I was dumb enough not to get AppleCare). A few days back, my computer would not startup and everytime I hit the power button, I would hear some spinning noise but no chime from the iMAC. Yesterday, I tried it again and this time I heard the chime but the monitor did not start. I was then able to SSH into the MAC and see that it is indeed connected to the network and booted up, but the screen is still dead. Any ideas what I should do before the painful trip to the apple store ?
