I have a 3 gig file that I want to send to someone by burning it on a few cds (no dvd burner T.T). What is the best way to compress the 3 gig file and burn it over a few cds so my recipient can take the files off the cd's and recombine them? I've seen rar files like this, and I guess that would be good but I don't know how I would do it.

I have a external hard drive, but i get the "error code 0" thing when I try and move it over, which now i know is because its in a FAT32 format....
Are there any solutions, or any other ways that I can transfer this file to my desktop PC?
I'm trying to secure-empty-trash a large backup disk image, about 275 gigs. During the process I had put the computer to sleep a couple times. After that, it seemed to be making no progress. I tried to stop the process so I could try again, and now it says
"Emptying the Trash...
Stopping..."
and has said that for hours with no apparent progress on the status bar. Is there anything I can do get it to finish the process, or to actually stop so I can try again?
My friend sent e a 4gig rar file but stuff it won't unrar it and unrarx says it is to large. So what other software can I use to unrar it?
View 12 Replies View RelatedAt one point I reinstalled PS3, but now I have the problem again.I often have problems with large format files in PS3. It was working fine, but after a couple of hours it "unexpectedly quit....". I have relaunched, tossed preferences, etc. When I force quit, the PS3 icon in the dock still shows up with the dot and the Force Quit window shows up with no indication that there is a problem. When I try to reboot many times I have to use the power button on the mac. Finally i got PS3 to open...I opened up a different file and it worked fine, but the large format file tried to open and it came up with "Could not complete your request because of a program error." Photoshop locked up. Do my large file formats get corrupted for some reason?I have a MacPro, Dual-Core Intel Xeon, 2.66 GHZ, 2 processors, and 16G B memory...There should not be a memory problem with this machine. Earlier i posted to ask how can i format using SL upgrade disk. I came across a problem. I have a work .ISO image which is about 9 GB and i tried copying that to my External HD with 20GB free Disc space. I am not able to copy it. I copied a lot of information to my friend's mid-2010 MBP, about 80GB of data. Used iChat - transfer took about three hours but it got there.Before the transfer her laptop was very quick - didn't have much installed, plenty of free space. After the transfer, the laptop still have a lot of free space (>100GB) but is very slow. Before the laptop would take maybe 1 minute to boot up.. now it's over three. She experiences bouncing beach balls when loading applications.

I'd like to avoid wireless and Migration Assistant because of their slow speed. I know I can use a crossover cable to create an ethernet connection, but I don't currently have one with me and I'm kind of eager to get this computer set up tonight.
I'm wondering if it's possible to use a regular ethernet cable to do the same thing? Or possibly connect both computers to my router using seperate ethernet cables? (and would that option improve the speed of transfer)? Any suggestions on this would be greatly appreciated.
If nothing else works I'd be willing to wait a day and buy either the crossover cable or a usb converter for my firewire cable to do target disk (would that even work?).
I am playing around with HD video and have a very large Quicktime File (12.5GB) that froze my computer while rendering. I need to delete it. (CRASH: screen freezes and dark line slowly comes from top to bottom and once entire screen is slightly darker, a post in the middle pops up and tells me to turn off computer by holding power button).Â
After a lot of trial and error, it seems the problem is that the computer can't handle the massive deletion. Unlike a lot of other similar issues on this forum, this is a single file and not hundreds, so i can't delete portions at a time and be done with it. I have run through all my ideas and need help on how to delete this file from my computer and have come up with two possible ways:Â
1 - Split this video into smaller files. I dont know how to do this: I have SPLIT-CONCAT but that duplicates (then splits) and does not actually split the original. I tried "replacing" the video with the same-named smaller file and it crashed the computer.Â
2 - Change preferences on this computer somehow to allow this massive deletion. I tried a force empty through terminal and it did the same crash. I dont know if there is a preference (disk manager) or otherwise to get rid of this file. Â

I have two MacBook Pros running 10.7.4. I wanted to copy one iPhoto library from one device to the other using a new Thunderbolt cable. The file is approximately 60GB. When I copy a small file of 1.0 to 2.0 BG in size, the transfer is incredibly fast -- as in seconds. Â
When I try to transfer the large file (60GB), the transfer is very slow, and Finder says it will take 12 hours. Oh, and I am not running any anti-virus software.Â

I tried to send a few large file emails, one of which I aborted midstream. Now, when I try to get mail, MacMail keeps trying and succeeding to recover that same file over and over again. It's hung up in this cycle and I cannot receive emails into my inbox as a result.

Out of the blue my Mac suddenly is devoting a huge amount of ram to file cache. I have 32 Gigs of Ram and curretly 27 gigs of that is devoted to file cache. I am only running mail, iTunes and Chrome and I have 7 mg of ram left. What could be causing this and is there a fix?

View 3 Replies View RelatedThe files that Word 2008 has been saving have all been huge, abnormally so. A two-page document is over 100 KB (.docx) and ~30-40 KB (.doc). I thought maybe it was something in Word 2008, because I just got my MacBook Pro a few months ago, but I asked my friend and she told me she'd had no such problems, nor could I find anything on the Internet.
Just to compare, a ten-page paper I'm working on in class is 123 KB now in '08. I went and saved it in '07 as a test, and it came out to 27 KB (.docx both times).
I've been through all my Save settings, but nothing looks out of the ordinary--nothing that would blow up the size like this. Anyone have ideas? It's not exactly hurting anything, but I'm just collecting masses of enormous files that are taking up memory they shouldn't be, plus the fact that they're bulky and hard to distribute.
I am trying to create a new image from a DVD and burn it to a new DVD using the MAC Disk Utility "New Image" option. The source DVD is 4 G and my target folder is on my external HD which has 298G.. plenty of space. However, whenever I attempt to SAVE the existing DVD to my external HD, I am getting the error message that the file is too large. I have tried the parameter for "Image Format" of both 'Read Only' and 'DVD/CD Master' and neither of them work. My "Encryption" setting is 'None'.

I work on Excel files through my Office Mac program. On two occasions, a large Excel file, (about 1.5 MB) will not save and is not recoverable. It gives me an error code -43. I work on many such files without problem, but this has now happened on two occasions with important files.

So the other day I tried to send a large file through the Mail app to a friend. I realized after clikcing send that the file was indeed too large to send since my Mail froze in the attempt of sending it. I used force quit to get out of Mail and opened it again, and then clicked the x button when it started to send again. But then the message was still in my outbox and in my drafts, and Mail would try to update my inbox and drafts but just continue loading. I went to my outbox to delete the message, and when I did a notification popped up that said "The message could not be moved to the mailbox "Trash—On My Mac". The operation couldn't be completed. File exists". Now whenever I open Mail it's the same story, where it attempts to send the message, and then everything's trying to load but never does.(I went to iCloud recently to send a message, and the only remnant of this action was a draft of the message without the file, which I deleted.)

I have several local .mbox files created with the Apple Mail client from 10.6.8 saved "on my Mac" after doing a clean install of Yosemite I am having trouble getting them to import. One is ~5GB the other is ~2.5 GB. a smaller one (66MB) with 300 items fails to fully import (gets only ~170 items).Â
Is there a better way to force the new mail client to read these or is there another mail program that can read these? These are important emails.

View 24 Replies View RelatedI'm going to use a fast 300GB WD VelociRaptor HD in an e-SATA enclosure connected to my MBP via a Merax e-SATA Xpress XpressCard/34 for moving large audio file drum software during live play. I know FAT32 wont work because of it's 4gig file limitation and stability issues (file corruption). I could use the more modern and stable NTFS but that would require using something like NTFS-3G or Paragon to allow OSX to recognize it but I'm worried about slower performance going that route. Would using the OSX native HFS+ format give me the performance and large file size usage I need?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have a Western Digital 2TB USB Hard Drive that Ive been using perfectly for a couple of years on my MacBook Pro. A couple of months ago I bought a 27inch iMac and started using it as my main computer. So I had that hard drive connected to my iMac. Â
I started to notice that during large transfers (be it many files or 1 big one), usually into the Gigs, I suddenly got a warning message saying that the Hard Drive was inappropriately disconnected. It doesnt appear in Disk Utility so I have to manually connect and disconnect the drive in order for it to show up again on the iMac. I tested it again on my MacBook and the same thing happened. Â
Another problem:
Sometimes it will dissappear from the iMac without a warning message, it just doesnt show up. (Usually after long periods of inactivity). I then have to manually disconnect and connect for it to show up. Â
