Is it technically possible for Snow Leopard to build into OS X the WINE project, and have seamless ability to install and use Windows applications on OS X (without X11 cluttering it up - and with the realization it wouldn't be 100% compatible?) Is that even possible? Would the WINE license prohibit it?

According to the developer blog which initially told of the Atom incompatibility, the latest build of OS X 10.6.2 does retain support for Atom chips. It was previously reported that support for the Intel chip had been dropped, a move that many believed was Apple's attempt to stop the small but burgeoning "Hackintosh" netbook community. This all may change when the final 10.6.2 build is released, but as of now Atom support has returned.
Intel's Atom processor is a low-power, low-cost chip which is intended for notebooks and ultra-mobile PCs. No current Apple products use the chip, but a community has formed around installing Snow Leopard on so called "Hackintosh" netbook PCs which use the Atom processor. This unauthorized use of Apple's operating system has grown in popularity since the release of small, inexpensive notebooks such as the Dell Mini 10v, which allowed for easy installs of OS X.
Last year, it was reported that an executive at Intel had publicly vouched for the Atom processor to be used in Apple's tablet. With the buyout of chip designer P.A. Semi, many believe that Apple is instead designing its own chips for the platform.[ View this article at AppleInsider.com ]

i have a macbook running 10.5.2 and i want to upgrade it. i heva a mac mini whivh came with a disc of 10.6.2 on it and i wanted to know weather i can safely upgrade my macbook using this disc, without wiping my memeroy. the thing is, its not just the standard 10.6.2 install disc, it says mic mini 10.6.2 install disc, so i belive it is a biuld disc ( if thats what they are called) and i wasnt sure if i can use this or not.

View 12 Replies View RelatedI've been meaning to sign up for ages but only now am I getting around to it.Anyway, here is my question.I have been running Linux for quite some time, and am fairly adept at using terminal, WINE, etc. As with most people, I still cannot completely avoid Windows (Borderlands is addictive ok?) and I still use MSN, seeing as 95% of the people I know use it, not Yahoo messenger, AIM or Skype. Which is a nuisance for me, because while I like Adium, it really does suck compared to the real MSN client. And as usual, Microsoft pretends to be nice to Apple "developing software for it" while making sure its products are crippled so people either need to run CrossOver / Wine or Parallels / VMware to use it inside OS X, or create a boot camp partition for Windows. This doesn't make me want to use Windows, it makes me even more glad I purchased a Macbook.Ranting aside, I find the Wine client for Mac kind of 2nd rate compared to the Linux version.Installing winetricks fails miserably, where on Linux it was simple. Also, the lack of a decent DMG file or package makes installing it that little bit more difficult, I've never had good luck at installing things via terminal, even on Linux.My question is, has anyone found a way to install Wine and Winetricks on Mac to install MSN messenger?-IMPORTANT NOTE-I have Adium installed, as well as Microsoft Messenger, aMSN and I've tried basically all the other clients out there. Do not suggest these as solutions. This is about how to install the OFFICIAL Windows Live Messenger on Mac OS X using Wine, CrossOver or another method.

... long time reader, first time poster!! So I'm doing it. I'm switching from PC to Mac. I've been waiting for a while now and the new MacBook Pro's have convinced me. I'm buying the 13 inch this week.
However I'm slightly worried about the upgrade to Snow Leopard in September.
My question is if I buy a new MacBook Pro this week and upgrade from the current version of Leopard to Snow Leopard will it be the EXACT same as the version of Snow Leopard that ships with new MacBooks after September?
Is the upgrade just the same as the full software version available post September? Does the upgrade it just detect if you have the previous software and installs as if it were the full? Or does it just "patch" things depending on what's different from previous versions?
I can wait till after Snow Leopard is released in September 09 if it is different to Leopard upgraded to Snow Leopard.

I have Snow Leopard installed as a partition on my Macbook Pro, which I installed via the install disk. I want to do the same thing for my iMac but I am unable due to (seemingly) my install disk is for a Macbook Pro and not for an iMac.

Today I performed a clean install of Snow Leopard on my late 2009 Mac Mini. After completing the installation, I began running software update to bring everything up-to-date.While software update did find and install a number of updates (10.6.8v1.1 Combo update, Security Update 2012-002, Apple Software Installer Update, iLife Support 9.0.4, Remote Desktop Client Update 3.5.3, Airport Utility, Java, Safari) it did not find an update for iTunes (which starts at version 9.x, I believe, in a SL clean install).I assumed that this was some sort of random glitch and manually downloaded and installed iTunes 10.6.3.After that, I re-installed iLife '11 (from a retail DVD, not the App Store).When I ran Software Update again, it found updates for Garage Band, iDVD, and iWeb, but it did not show the updates for iPhoto and iMovie.I found this to be unnerving, as I performed a clean install when I first obtained this Mini a few months ago and didn't experience any of these problems - all of my Apple software updated automatically through Software Update without a hitch.
I began researching this problem online and found that other people have been experiencing this same problem (or some variation of it), and it seems like it began appearing around the time Apple updated some of its security certificates in March.In particular, I've found several references to the missing iPhoto update.This one is especially noticeable because an iPhoto library created in iPhoto 9.2.3 will not open in iPhoto 9.0, and this generates an error upon opening the program (i.e., a user backs up their iPhoto library created in 9.2.3, performs a SL clean install, reinstalls iLife, goes through the Software Update process until it shows that no more updates are available, and are shocked to find that they are unable to open their backed up iPhoto library because they have an out of date version of iPhoto).The most common (and admittedly logical) solution proposed in the threads I've read is to download any necessary updates directly from the Apple website. However, I am curious as to why this previously functional feature now appears to be broken.Has anyone else been struggling with this? Does it indeed have something to do with the new security certificates? I just bought a copy of snow leopard today but i don't know if I should do a direct upgrade from leopard to snow leopard, or wipe my MBP and do a fresh install so i have snow leopard on a clean slate.

I have my drive partitioned between Tiger and Snow Leopard. I am trying to move myself over to Snow Leopard so I don't have to keep switching. View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm basically after some suggestions or advice. There are two of us in this house both with two macs each and so all our machines are running OS X. I have downstairs my parents old desktop machine (Core2 Duo) running XP blah blah blah. But they have laptops now and aren't in the country atm. I want to put a new hard drive into this machine and create a server.
Our needs are fairly basic. This server needs to be a file server (for ~ 2TB HDD space), a print server but also a MySQL and PHP server. So far I've fired up iATKOS 10.5.5 onto the machine but I'm trying to keep this operation as legal as possible.My question is really about a linux server. A linux server is able to host a bunch of HFS+ partitions because I've tested that out before but I'm not sure it would work as a print server. How compatible would OS X be with a server (as described) running something like ubuntu or ubuntu server edition?
Just curious is any one is using this build for every day use? I have a vacation coming up and thought I might install and try it out until my retail copy ships in Sept since I have some free time on my hands.
