seems the last update broke running games with Steam, and broke Skype. Any idea what might have caused this.

So, with build 10A432, I'm unable to access the files on my DNS-323 via Samba. It gives me this error ...
"The operation can't be completed because the original item for "Volume_1" can't be found."
I can access everything fine from another machine running Leopard. I believe this is a known issue with Snow Leopard, further hardening my belief that this is a very useless upgrade. The only real thing SL has got going for it, is the fact that it is cheap. That's why people will buy it, because its only $29.
Coming back to the topic, can someone suggest me a fix?
Also, if you want to debate the worthiness of SL as a $29 upgrade, please don't bother posting here. I don't want any smart fanboy comments either. Let's stick to the topic at hand.
After updating from 10.5.8 to 10.6.1 I was not able to use screen sharing any more to connect to a machine running 10.5.8. If I click on "Share Sreen..." in finder, by default my short name is used (e.g. jwhite) Using the correct password I was faced with the message: (Authentication failed to "...".) Please verify you have entered the correct name and password. This worked fine in Leopard to Leopard. Snow Leopard to Leopard did not work. Trying a lot of things I managed to use screen sharing without a problem by using the full name (e.g. John White instead of jwhite)
View 2 Replies View RelatedI recently upgraded from Leopard to Snow Leopard. Unfortunately this disabled the remote management status icon in the menu bar? Any way to get it back? Before when I "screen shared" this computer the remote management status icon would appear in the menu bar, now it's gone. I tried enabling remote management but I can't authenticate when I try to connect from my Leopard PowerBook.

Still think i have a hack or am being remotely accessed. Found a private folder - hidden. the name should be my name - who is wheel or system - usually in this area it is my name?Â
would it be useful for you guys for me to show the contents of everything in here to see if here is a hack?
would macscan be able to find this hidden priviate file and find if there was something malicious?

I have two users defined on my macbook (one is New, and the other one, the Old one, is what I've always had).I was re-configuring File Sharing on the Old user.I turned files sahring off in the Old User, but when I log into the New, I can still acess to some folders that I have never set to be shared; only few folders have the red restricted access on it. The New User does have file sharing disabled, and non of its folder can be accessed; so, it's working Ok for this New User.Â

I'm running Leopard (10.5.1) and so is my father's Mini.
I successfully used screen sharing when both computers were in my office and also when I took my father's computer across town to a friend's house and shared screens across town. When I shipped my father's computer back to him in another state and we just tried screen sharing, the sharing worked for 5 seconds or so each time and then aborted. This is very consistent. Screen sharing always connects and then aborts after five seconds or so.
Any thoughts on what could be going on? (FYI: to ensure that the firewall isn't causing any screen sharing issues, the firewall on both computers is set to allow all connections.)
Well I managed to break my roommates macbook pro screen.
We're studying abroad in the netherlands currently, we live in a small room. I tripped over my chair and in an attempt not to fall attempted to grab onto something... I grabbed onto his macbook pro...
The fall wasn't really what broke it, he has a hard shell on it, but all my weight shifted so i was pressing on the top of computer (the computer was closed) I hear almost a "pop" sound. There aren't any other dents or scratches or anything, but his screen is obviously cracked and impossible to use now (It's all just a lot of colors)
He's traveling currently and I have no way to contact him. He won't be back until sunday so i want to figure everything on how to repay him for this before that. I feel like a huge schmuck and I need to make this up to him.
His data is obviously recoverable so that's not an issue thank god, but what is the cheapest solution to get this fixed? I can't start working until december when I get back to the states and money is really tight so buying him a complete new computer is semi-impossible... Obviously I can't just say I'll start a payment plan for him, I want to pay him all upfront. I was thinking that until he gets his fixed, we transfer all his data onto my laptop and he uses mine. Or I get him a cheap moniter so he can at least temporarily use his own, which I would prefer. (I do have to do school work as well on my own laptop.)
I've seen a lot of different options to have it repaired, all of which will probably have to wait three weeks until we get back home. It seems extrememly expensive (1000 dollars?) to get it fixed directly through apple, and cheaper (400-500?) to get it fixed through a third-party manufacturer.
I've been having a few troubles sharing the internet from my MBP to my Xbox 360 lately. My university only lets us have ONE wireless card registered on the system for security reasons, or else I would just use the Xbox 360 Wi-Fi Adapter. I share the internet over an ethernet cable to my Xbox. Lately something weird has been happening, internet sharing stops working.
Not just a simple drop in the Airport connection, but the actual setting for Internet Sharing changes on it's own. My computer isn't restarting when this happens, it's random when it's still online. Usually if it drops signal from the access point it still starts working again after the signal picks up. I go into the Sharing preferences to find that the Internet Sharing check box has unchecked itself. Once I check it back and restart my Xbox 360, it works again.
I have a small home network. Three macs all running the latest version of Snow Leopard (as of right now 10.6.2). I have my Mini acting as a file server. We do remote backups via SuperDuper to an attached HDD on the mini. So it just runs and does nothing. On the mini I have the admin account and then two "sharing" accounts. Lets call the sharing accounts 'user1' and 'user2'. I have shared one folder with 'user1' and a different folder with 'user2'. That way each user has their very own folder to put whatever file they want in there without the other user accidentally deleting or messing around with their files.
Both user account computers can connect to the Mini with no problem. The problem is that both user accounts can see and write to each other's folders. I have the permissions via "File Sharing" in System Preferences --> Sharing --> File Sharing set so that only the user and admin have read/write privileges and Everyone has no access. I know something is wrong because I have this exact setup at work and users can only see their shared folder.
Network file sharing has always been buggy in my windows/mac mixed environment, but I managed to live with it. It worked for 85% of the time. However, since upgrading to SL, it now works less than 5%. It keeps telling me "there was an error connecting to the server. please check ip addr, etc.......". It'd work for a few minutes after each restart and then resume its habit of annoying the hell out of me. Is this a common problem with Sl and Win 7? (BTW, win7 to win7 or win7 to vista file sharing works perfectly).
View 5 Replies View RelatedI have 2 Mac Minis (10.6.8) and a laser printer in my upstairs office, while my Cable Modem is downstairs. I use one of the upstairs Minis to connect via wireless (to a SonicWall TZ210) and then share the connection via the Ethernet port, which is connected to a gigabit switch, along with the printer and the other Mini.Â
As long as the host Mini is logged into a user, the other Mini can connect to the Internet just fine. I had to tweak the settings on the TZ210, to allow for the shared subnet on the upstairs network, but - as I said - it works just fine as long as someone is logged into the host Mini.Â
However, as soon as the user logs OUT of the host Mini, the client mini can't ping, nslookup, surf, or anything else. It's like Internet Sharing has been deactivated on the host Mini.Â
How can I get Internet Sharing to continue to function on the Host Mini when no users are logged in?Â

I am using my iMac with a media player to stream movies to my TV. I configured Internet sharing and locked it, turned on Airport, configured the media player, it connects to the network and everything works fine for a startup/shutdown cycle.
But the next time I start up the media player cannot connect to the network. I check internet sharing and find it still connected but it is now unlocked. I must turn off Airport, de-select internet sharing, re-select internet sharing which brings a start dialog box, then back to Airport.
How can I keep this configuration permanently in place?

Today I noticed that on my MBA Rev A, right screen hinge got damaged somehow. Wife said she heard a crack when she was closing the screen, and sure enough, something's messed up inside and won't close fully anymore. Screen also won't keep open as firmly as before, as right hinge became loose. The warranty is out since last year, so I tried opening it to see if there's something that I can do. Looks like some part of the hinge is broken. One little metal piece fell out of hinge when I scratched a bit there with a tiny screwdriver. On top of that, just last month my battery stopped holding charge anymore (have to keep laptop plugged in all the time or else it shuts down losing all my work when the battery meter shows ~20% life remaining)

View 11 Replies View RelatedThings used to be simple with Leopard and XP, with the network browser working seamlessly like magic, detecting the XP within few seconds after it connected. But that's no longer the case. Since I upgraded XP to 7, automatic detection of the Mac side was going on and off, and folder access was also on and off, somewhat unreliable. Then I upgraded from Leopard to Snow Leopard, the automatic detection is completely gone, complete reliance on cmd+k now, and something strange happened . . .
I've figured out how to share Mac files with Windows, and it is working properly on the Windows side. The problem is the other way round, where I can get only some Windows folders shared and not some others. The settings are exactly the same, and that brings me to a dead end.
I'm having a problem I think with the internet sharing feature in snow leopard. Here's what I'm trying to do. I have a cable modem plugged into a time capsule in another room, and I use a mac mini to connect to that via wifi. I am trying to share that internet connection with a couple of devices from the mini's ethernet port. I have the mini plugged into a dlink switch along with the other devices, but none of those devices can connect. The mini works fine, and I made sure in sys prefs I have internet sharing checked and it says from airport to ethernet. Can the mini only provide connection to one device? Should I be using something other than a switch?
View 3 Replies View RelatedWe have an Xserve (intel) with two ethernet ports running on OS X 10.6.8 server. It is connected to our network and sharing files with local users and authentication from our PDC (over an AD network). I need to setup a private network so that we can keep a few PCs off of our primary network (primarily to keep them from getting updates pushed or malware). Using the two ethernet ports, this should be do-able. It's practically automatic on a couple Windows boxes we have setup. However, when I plug a small router into the second ethernet port, I instantly lose the PDC communication on the other. I'm not sure if there are other issues at this point or not because there hasn't been a time when I can bring the system down (yet).Â
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have a headless PC that is running Win7. I want to connect directly to it via ethernet for a nice Gigabit transfer rate. The PC will be relatively portable (I intend to customize a bag for it to fit in) so you can see why I can't just network it all with a router. Anyway, I've hit a few snags. The two computers simply don't see eachother when it comes to their ethernet adapters. Here is the network breakdown:Â Win7 has a wireless-N adapter (which connects fine to the wireless router here, finds my Macbook and can share files normally), and the ethernet adapter, which I've managed to successfull connect to another Win7 laptop fine, but will not see my mac.Macbook's wireless is also fine, but ethernet adapter, which I've never had problems with networking before, also does not see the Win7 machine.Â
The Win7 machine has a static IP, and I've even added the IP to the Network Pane WINS list in OS X along with the workgroup name, yet I try to ping/connect to the IP address and I get nothing.Â
I use a VNC application called TeamViewer to remotely view the headless PC, not sure if that is interfereing, but I don't believe it is. Wire is not a crossover, but I'm going to assume that this macbook's ethernet is switching it automatically. Do I need to disable the wireless adapters?Â
In iTunes when I right click on a song and click "get info", then change some info, it doesn't stick. It goes right back to what I already had in there before. I then realized that this is because every file inside my iTunes music folder is set for "read only" and not "read & write". So after I change it to "read & write" all changes I make in iTunes will take. However, I have a lot of music and therefore a lot of files inside my iTunes music folder. Going into each and every folder to change its permission to "read & write" would be tedious and time consuming,

I have a 3.06 Intel Core Duo iMac and a 253 Intel Core i5 Macbook Pro. Both are running 10.6.8. They have until recently successfully shared my HP C8180 All in One Printer, the iMac being connected to the printer via USB and to a Netgear Router via Ethernet and the Macbook Pro being linked to the router wirelessly.Â
Having just updated the HP Drivers via software update on both machines the Macbook Pro is no longer able to connect to the printer via the iMac wirelessly and the printer is not reported as being "Nearby". It does however connect via the iMac if it is connected to the router via Ethernet !Â
Printer sharing is on on the iMac, I have tried removing the printer from both machines Preferences and re-instating them (which coincidentally has meant I have lost the connection to "Lightscribe" and can't get it back on either machine !) I've tried installing the latest HP Software to try and get the Macbook pro to connect to the printer directly via the router but witth no success - it reports that some of the HP software is not compatible with 10.6.8 despite HP saying it is for 10.6.Â
how I can get the laptop to print in the way it did up until earlier today and how to get "lightscribe" back?
I recently started a position where the previous person left me very little information. I am not familiar with hosting locally as I have always used GoDaddy.  There are several sites set up, so I have some "template" to go off of, but I need the basics. If i purchase the domain somewhere and the multiple sites are hosted on a single IP, how can I direct to a specific folder? Do I just create a folder within the volume all others are then make it a shared folder? Set the protocol options to match one that is alread there? Is there a beginers guide to this, and all the settings and options available somewhere?Â

I've got a friend still running Leopard 10.5 but he wants to install FaceTime. I know FaceTime requires 10.6.4 but I wanted to get your input on any hacks that might get it to run on 10.5.
I'm a n00b hacker and modified the plist file within the app and set the OS minimum to 10.5 but it still fails to run. Is there anything anyone else has tried that's worked? Should I be looking in other areas within the mpkg file or .app ?
My Photo Booth application was acting very weird so I called Apple support and they told me Photo Booth was "broken" and the only way to fix it is to Archive and Install Leopard. I really don't want to go through all this trouble. So I was wondering if it would be possible to just wait for Snow Leopard to come out and then install Snow Leopard? Will Snow Leopard reinstall all my applications or will it just upgrade the OS, leaving the applications alone?
