We are running 10.5 server and 10.4 client machines. 4 servers with accounts 2 work and 2 do not. Everything seems to be set up the same on all. The error we get is "The home folder for the user account is located on an AFP or SMB server.
View 2 RepliesI work for a company that has several Macs available for customers' use. These are basically demo-machines that they can play with, and at the end of each day, the machines are wiped and rebooted.
The way we do this is simple: the machines auto-login to the Guest account, which will wipe the account at the end of the day. Well, getting a few new Macs in this week, I simply copied over the entire Guest user account to the new machines to avoid reloading all the demo content, preferences, etc. And truthfully, the machines have been working great.
Except one thing. The computer keeps giving me that annoying message that says "Safari (or Finder, or System Preferences, or anything!) wants to use keychain 'login'". And asks for the login keychain password. Well here's the thing: the Guest accounts don't have passwords!
So I looked up a little bit on this topic, and did things like... Went to "Keychain List" in the Edit menu of Keychain Access, and deleted both the "login" and "system" keychains. No help. I went to Preferences in Keychain Access and said "Reset My Keychain". When doing this, however, it asks for the new password for the login keychain.
The problem with this is that I cannot leave the field blank! The Guest account doesn't have a password, so how am I supposed to not create a password?
i ve recently activated the default guest account in leopard. However even though when I check in the accounts.prefpane it says that it is on and its 'login only' and when I click on the account it says 'allow guests to login into this computer' and its on.
However when I boot up my machine and click on the guest icon, it wont let me in as it shakes the menu(login failed).
We have an Apple server bound to a Windows AD. All looks good and I created shares on the Apple giving permissions to the Windows AD users.
However, I have two problems:
1) From a Mac I can see the shares but can't connect with AD accounts.
2) From a Windows client I can't see nor connect.
I have a brand new iMac running 10.7.4 bound to AD with mobile accounts to be created at login. We've had dozens of users log into this Mac with their AD credentials with no problems. Login proceeds as expected, home folders are created, etc. One user cannot log in. The login window will freeze (spinning beach ball) after he enters his credentials and the computer has to be manually shut down. After a restart you can see that his home directory has been created, with proper permissions, but he still cannot log in (spinning beach ball). However, he CAN log onto other AD bound Macs, just not this one. And he CAN log onto a bound Windows machine, so apparently there's nothing wrong with his account. There is no OD server in the mix. The computer is bound to our AD domain only. The system log shows the proper UID but indicates that the user name can't be found. But then the user folder (with the correct name) is created anyway. Later there is an entrry that the UID can't be found.

Then it just gives me the default background and a cursor. I can log in on my other two accounts but all of my data is on the account I cant log in on! I have got Filevault enabled if that could be the problem??

When I try and log in to the Administrator account (my only account) it brings up a dialog box that says "You are unable to log in to the user account (user name) at this time with and OK button. Before this I was performing the Secure Empty Trash feature which froze on me. I tried exiting it out and logging out but was unable to. So I held the power button on the side of my IMac till it shut down. That is when this problem occurred.

I'm not sure - but for some reason I am no longer able to login to my wikiserver via Safari. I can with firefox, chrome, IE, etc but not in Safari. Username doesn't matter. (either total admin or just a user).

i search online and found a solution to it which is to remove ATIRadeonX1000.kext . however by doing this there is a lot of inconvinent for me.

I didn't know about the Filevault problem so when I tried logging in, I got the error message and I am unable to login to my account (the only one on the computer). The support page says to make a root user, but how can I do that when I can't even log in to my account. I dont have a disc copy of Lion I can use to start up with, only a copy of 10.6.

I have a couple of new users I've added to our directory recently. They are unable to connect to our internal jabber (iChat) server. Users that have connected previously are experiencing no difficulty. A quick overview of the layout of the system: two XServes, one is OD primary (aspen) the other is OD replica and iChat server (vail). I've modded some config files (long ago) to allow user IDs for jabber to be user@ourcompany.office instead of user@vail.ourcompany.office. It works quite nicely.Â
Excerpt from the logs shows a failed login attempt followed by a successful login attempt. Successful logins are happening from Messages (beta), iChat under Snow Leopard, and Pidgin under windows. Failing logins are all from iChat under Snow Leopard. Is there a way to have a different mail password instead of using the one that you use to login to Lion directly? Currently the two are the same login password = mail password.I'd like to have a different password for the two.Is this possible whether via command line or otherwise?

Why does my mac mini now refuses to send out email, to any of my accounts? It was working. Works on my power pc, works on my iPad. Works when I use my old eudora mail program. Just doesn't work on the mac mini using the Apple Mail program. The mail system error message says the the "sender address rejected by server.". Results of clicking on "connection doctor" in error message gives all "green" status on all addresses and smtp.west.cox.net. Status message says, "Connection and login to server succeeded". In summery. everything looks fine but still will not send out messages.  I've tried restarting system. No luck. Tried taking accounts offline then online. Doesn't help. I've only concluded that the problem is in the Apple Mail program on the mac mini.Â

i have a domain controller and active directory based policy win 2003, one xserve running mac os x server 10.6.8 and alot of macs workstations. How can i push login script on all macs without adding it in login items? The script i want to store on smb or afp share disk, and will be edited from time to time. I've tried to add it on xserve from WGM, but it threw an error that current directory schema doesn't store desktop settings.So how can i solve this?

I installed Lion Server on Tuesday, and have been battling with it ever since - attempting to use a 'We Got Served' guide to walk me through. Â
I installed the Server app on my iMac as I figured the 3 computers on the network would not require very much space, and so there would be little point in buying a whole new machine to run it from. Whilst I was having little luck in making it work as I had hoped - I have now managed to completely lock the iMac. Since it's installation I have had no issue logging in and out of my actual account on OSX, however earlier the computer froze following an Adobe update and I was forced to do a hard restart. However, when I attempted to log back in I now get the following error:Â
"You are unable to log in to the user account "xxxx" at this time. Logging in to the account failed because an error occurred."Â
I have tried everything in my limited knowledge to rectify this, and nothing works it would seem. I've read examples of this happening when trying to log into the actual server app, or where the hard drive is corrupt on the machine itself - this seems to be a hybrid of the two.Â
I can no longer open the computer in Safe Mode, however when I go into Disk Utility all disks when verified appear to be absolutely fine with disc repair making no difference. The only available drive is now listed as a Server drive so I cannot even re-install Lion on there. Â
This is causing me much distress as I can as far as I can tell not only log into my computer, but can do nothing to repair the issue bar erasing everthing from it. There is a lot of important data on there and I am confident that it is not actually corrupt, however Server seems to have just locked it completely.Â

Hi! Im new to the forums but i really need help with something and i was hoping someone here could help me out. So I just installed Tech Tool Deluxe onto my macbook and then shut it down later. I went back to use it again and when i turned it on a login screen appeared asking me to put in my password. I did that and the screen turned blue (looking like it was loading) and then went back to the login screen. Every time i put in my password it just takes me back to the login screen. I have had my mac for a while and i dont want my hardrive to get wiped out so what do i do? Thank you for looking
View 1 Replies View RelatedG4 MDD networked with Mini for approx. 3 years now via a LinkSys BEFSR41 wired router. Ethernet cables are CAT6's with gold-plated ends. Did an erase/install (+ updates) of Panther on G4. ISP is Comcast Cable. Just upgraded my Motorola modem from Surfboard 5100 to SB 5101 yesterday. My network settings are ok...file sharing is turned on...I can ping each 'puter from the other (showing my connection is good).
I have internet access (showing that the router is still good according to Cisco). Now, however, I can't even bring up the window on the G4 asking for my pw....all I get is connection failed, no response from the server. From the Mini, I get Unknown User, incorrect password or login is disabled. I haven't a clue what the problem can be. Everything I do daily depends upon the network connection.
I'd like to setup a network account on Lion Server and allow that account to VPN in to my server. But I want this account to have limited access to my LAN, similar to how the stovepiped "Guest Network" works with Airport Extremes. I don't see any way to assign specific network accounts specific IP ranges outside the normal, say, 10.0.1/24. Is there even any way to assign a specific account something in the range,say, 10.0.2/24? Any way to further limit network access for Lion Server VPN sessions?

I have an iMac G5 1.8Ghz and Today when I logged in, it just froze on the apple OS X background. I waited 2 minutes, and nothing happened. It was weird because it's the first time it happened. Anyway, I turned the iMac off and re-tried. It did the exact same thing. So I turned it off, unplugged everything, waited around a minute, plugged it all back in, and it worked fine.
But yeah, just trying to work out why it would do that... because this is going to my brother and I don't want it to just crash when I give it to him.
on a windows platform, you have Server 2003 running Active Directory on a domain. and XP SP2 clients login to the domain connected to the server.is it possible to run the same situation but run OSX Server instead of a windows 2003 server? I'm just thinkin for a small office and reliability of using mac platform instead of pc with potential viruses and stuff, I want to use my office osx server machine and use windows pc's up front to log into the server.

This may be a stupid question, but how do I login as a user on the server? I tried to connect to server through the go menu. I couldn't. The IP would not work, although in other parts the ip is recognized.

We had a HDD fail on one of our office Mac laptops (a power pc G4). Apple repaired it and I restored all files etc from a backup. I was the administrator during the restore. Before I could get back, the user changed that account to a standard account and changed the name. Now there is no way to change the account back, because there is no admin to authenticate the change. Anything I can do? I am not an advanced computer/Mac person.

I'm new to macs. I forgot my root password which I needed to uninstall a program so I put in my OSX cd and went to the reset password tool. I reset the password for my user account as well as the root account. I gave them the same password and hit save. Then I rebooted and it asked me to login with my user account. The administrator account isn't there. I tried the new password (and I definitely typed it correctly) but it doesn't work. Now I can't login. What's going on?
