OS X Server :: Macs Sometimes Netbooting From Wrong Image?

Occasionally when we netboot a Mac, it boots from the wrong image!On the OSX Server (10.4.8), the default image is a standard NetBoot image. There is also a NetRestore image used for restoring/cloning and also a NetInstall image used to upgrade Macs running OSX10.3 to 10.4
A few times we have found that although the Standard NetBoot image is set as the default, a Mac has booted to the NetRestore image, which is very worrying as the NetRestore image is set to erase destination hard drive before it restores !
How can this happen even when the standard netboot image is set as the default ?lso, one of the G4s in our PhotoStudio Netbooted this morning instead of booting of its internal/local hard drive even though no-one had selected this!
I guess this happened because the Mac could not find an alternative startup disk to boot from ? However after NetBooting, we were able to restart the Mac normally, from its local hard drive. Very strange.......Fortunately, this time the Mac did boot to the default Netboot image on the OSX server so the NetRestore did not 'kick-in' ! However, due to the recent behaviour I feel I cannot trust the NetBoot Server in case it starts up from the NetRestore image and overwrite somesone hard drive!

I'm trying to get my machines to netboot off the netboot image I created. When I go to my startup disk panel of my client mac, the netboot image shows up in the drive list and I restart.Â
It flashes the globe for a second, but ends up just booting from the internal HDD of the client.Â

I guess curiosity got the best of me and I attempted to re-flash my working Sapphire 4870 with a different bios image provided here, and now when I boot I dont get any video. Just a black screen and no chime.
After this I tried putting in my old 7200gt to try and get it to boot so I could reflash back to the old firmware - but as long as the 4870 is installed I get no video at all. As soon as I take it out everything works fine.
Please advise me on what to do next.

I'm running 10.5.1 server on a G5 and plain old 10.5.2 on two other Macs. When I reboot the server, the other two Macs appear in the Shared section in the sidebar of a Finder window. I can mount their disks and share their screens.
After some indeterminate time (days, sometimes hours), they disappear from the sidebar. I can ping them and I can mount their file systems via "Connect to server ...", but I can't get to their screens. I have two PC's and a Linux box and they never disappear. And on each non-server Mac, the server and the other non are always there.
Why do my shared Macs vanish from the server?

After I set up my new iMac and had everything running, my G4, G5 and MacBook all appeared in my server list.This week, for some reason (I can't understand) they don't show.I even went to Favorite (recent) listing and tried that way, but nothing connected.I can see my iMac from my G5 and my MacBook, but the connection timesout.Â

Invitations for external (not users on the server) is not working.All mails are handled by ISP, including the iCal servers account.The "Allow invitations using email addresses" is checked, and setup with a working mail account at the ISP.  By looking in the logs for iCal Server I get this:[URL]This is leading me to think that the server must be trying to log in at the ISP with it's own credentials (given in the "Allow invitations..." setup) but trying to send with a users mailaddress as sender.This is of course not allowed by my ISP, since everyone could potentially send mails from each other, but how do I change iCal to send the invitations from iCals account?

I have setup profile manager. Trusted profile is installed.When a user logs in the profile is added. In the profile the users email address is correct. [URL] When i turn to Mail, agenda and contacts in the system preferences the mail address is displayed as : [URL]This is also being displayed in the Mail account settings.Â

I have an OSX 10.4 server that I am attempting to use to deploy NetInstall images.
I want to update some OSX 10.3.x Macs that are on our network so I have created a NetInstall image from the OSX 10.4 Tiger DVD using System Image Utility. Then I planned to Netboot these 10.3 Macs using the 10.4 NetInstall image when I would have hoped would then push the 10.4 image out to the OSX 10.3 Macs.The Macs see the 10.4 netinstall image as an available startup system but when I select it the Mac just sits there with the spinning 'gear' and gets no further.I'm not sure if it is actually working or not, it certainly does not look like it!When this is happening my network seems to grind to a halt and my users on the network have problems connecting to other servers and also browsing network shares (on other servers).
Someone mentioned to me that perhaps the server si multicasting shich is flooding the network ?So, have 2 issues here; one where the client Mac does not get past the spinning 'gear' on the grey screen after selecting the NetInstall image to boot from and also the network slowing right down, grinding to a halt!

I have just finished setting up my first Lion Server from scratch on a Mac Mini with dual 500GB Drives which I set up as RAID 1. I have the server exactly as I want it, and before the users start logging on and it gets all screwed up I would like to create a disk image of it so that I could reinstall if necessary w/o having to start from scratch.Â
Is the process of creating a disk image for a RAID 1 any different than that of a disk image from a single drive set up? Will Disk utility just see this as a single volume or will it want to create a disk image of the entire RAID? i.e will the disk image be 1 TB (500 GB x 2)? And when it comes to reimaging my RAID, will I just recreate a RAID 1 and be able to write to it from that disk image?Â

Contracting for a company that in maintaining seven different images for different iMacs, Macbooks, etc. The only difference is the background image. I was wondering if there is any easy way of detecting hardware and setting the correct resolution background image during or post image restore.

Safari used to let me drag an image from a webpage to the finder and have the dragged file be saved as an actual image but now all that's saved is a webloc file. I want the image saved, not a reference to the image's URL - do I now have to always use "save as" to save it?Â
I can understand Safari creating a webloc file if I dragged the site icon from the location bar to the finder, but to make the default behavior for dragging things that are parts of a page (not the page itself) as webloc files seems like a HUGE step backwards for usability.Â
Does anyone know if there's, say, a key to hold when dragging to avoid saving a webloc file or a defaults command or something to make Safari revert back to sane draging behavior?

One software says I cannot upload an image because the image or the container folder does not have permission. Indeed there is one "unknown" in permissions, that I cannot get to a read write no matter how hard I try -- both on the folder, the desktop, and the file (this is all on my laptop)Â I've done a repair permission.

When a user copies an image from a browser into PowerPoint 2011 he gets text of a link back to the image, not the image itself. But if he copies from a browser into Word he gets the image, and can then copy the image from Word to PowerPoint. Same results with both Firefox and Safari. Behavior is new so I assume it relates to recent software updates but user does not recall accepting any.

I have my PowerBook G4 connected to a Hitachi video projector, using a DVI to VGA adapter.
The problem is that the only projected image I can see is that of my Desktop image. It doesn't display the Dock, menus or any windows.
What settings do I need to change?

I recently right clicked a picture to set it as my desktop picture but didn't have the foresight to save the picture in case I wanted to change it later. I still have the picture up but I cannot find where the picture is stored so I can save it for later. I checked HD/Library/desktop pictures but no luck. Does anyone know where these pictures are saved?

Does anyone have any words of wisdom about "migrating" from server to normal MacOS? I have decided to get out of the server environment - it is much more than I need in my little home office network. I have used the "Migration Assistant" successfully for non-server to non-server.

I'm faced with the daunting task of migrating from Panther Server to Leopard Server. The present server is the Primary DNS serving several web sites (some of which is running MySQL databases). I have the luxury that we've bought 2 new Xserves last year, but due to time constraints, I haven't time until now to seriously consider the steps to this daunting task. We're also currently using a linux box for the firewall (it does no routing, just iptables rules). I want to migrate away from this also and utilize either Apple's firewall or a router. Is there anything out there on the web that will help me in this process? I'm terrified of messing up the production environment, especially since the Xserve is our DNS.

I made an image of my Windows XP laptop drive using Macrium. I can see the image file there on one of my Mac Pro's internal drives, but Im not able to select in Fusion.. Is there a way to make a Fusion VM from this image? If not, how do I go about creating a VM from my laptops's HD? I'm using Fusion 2.6.

Apparently, there are two ways to convert disk images in CDR format to ISO format:
1. Rename diskimage.cdr to diskimage.iso
Or
2. hdiutil makehybrid -iso -joliet -o diskimage.iso diskimage.cdr
The first method is really quick while the second method takes quite a long time. Do the two methods yield the same ISO file? In particular, I would like to convert a bootable CDR disk image to an ISO disk image.

i have a domain controller and active directory based policy win 2003, one xserve running mac os x server 10.6.8 and alot of macs workstations. How can i push login script on all macs without adding it in login items? The script i want to store on smb or afp share disk, and will be edited from time to time. I've tried to add it on xserve from WGM, but it threw an error that current directory schema doesn't store desktop settings.So how can i solve this?

I run 10.6.8 server in a VM with Parallels Server for Mac. Lithium pinged me early Monday morning to tell me that my calendar server wasn't reachable. I found it had kernel panicked. After resetting it and verifying the directory structure and permissions, it booted fine. But availability or free/busy wasn't working for all users! The events were all there. Invites could be sent and received but when a user checks for availability when creating events. they see the daily work hours grayed out but not anything corresponding to a scheduling conflict. Â
Things I have Tried:
- bounced ical server
- Rebooted the server
- checked the owners and permissions for the data store hierarchy. (_calendar:_calendar 750)
- checked for xattrs on .ics files in several calendars
- deleted .db.sqlite for several users in several dir in their calendar stores
- in the past I have found that some iTIP invitations seem to get "stuck' causing problems with an individual users free/busy and deleting the inbox resolves this so I deleted several inboxes
-I moved a copy of the data store to a test server and pointed several clients at it.Â
The issue persisted in all of these cases without any change in behavior with one exception; somewhere (i lost track of where) during this process users also lost their delegation preferences. I'd love to find out how and where that is stored so that it can be restored in the future. It seems pretty fragile...Â
I found one way to restore the functionality; copying a users __uid__/<GUID>/calendar out. . Moving all the folders under <GUID> out of the way and dropping the .ics files into ical with their account configured in that instance. Although this worked for selected users, I have many, many users and calendars so this solution would be suboptimal. Â

I have been given the attached one-pager with screenshots of how to configure a Windows Outlook client to work with our corporate email system (Exchange).
I want to configure the Mail client on my Mac, however.
Can anyone give me a clue where these things are entered? When I add a new account in Mac Mail, and choose Exchange 2007, I don't see similar fields. My guesses so far have resulted in "the server cannot be contacted on port 443
