OS X :: Restore Old IMac G5 To New IMac Via Time Machine?

Feb 11, 2009

My old iMac G5 PowerPC finally had its day -- the logic board died on me. Instead of spending $900 on a new logic board, I decided to purchase a new intel based iMac.

I used Time Machine to back up my data on my G5. I obviously want this data on my new iMac. However -- I don't want the old applications (like iLife 06, etc etc.). I would obviously like to keep the new applications (like iLife 09).

So I guess my question is this: If I do a full restore, does that only do my files or does it include all my apps from my G5?

If it includes the apps, is there a way to do a piece meal restore to only get the files I want (music, photos, videos and documents)?

OS X :: Time Machine Restore From IMac To Macbook?

Aug 7, 2009

My iMac just died on me, however, I had everything backed up using TimeMachine. Is it possible to restore that TimeMachine 'image' onto my Macbook as I cannot replace my iMac right now. Or would I use the migration assistant instead and choose to migrate over the old account?

The iMac was a late 2007 model and my Macbook is the CLE version (Alu Dec 08).

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Contacts Won't Restore From Time Machine To IMac

Mar 25, 2012

I have lost my contacts. I can see them in TM, but they will not restore using the standard procedure. Restoring from iCloud is not an option. I understand that in Snow Leopard it was necessary to go to the following folder in Finder "/users/username/library/application support/address book. start address book " - and restore that folder in TM. However, that folder does not exist in Lion. How do I restore contacts using TM?

OS X V10.6 Snow Leopard :: How To Get Time Machine Restore Done On IMac

Mar 25, 2012

Having issues getting a Time Machine restore done on my iMac running Snow Leopard. I was using a Seagate GoFlex Home network drive for the Time Machine Backups and my main drive failed and had to be replaced. When trying to restore the Time Machine does not recognize that the GoFlex has a backup to restore from. I have tried several different strategies around this. I used the terminal to make hidden files visible and I can then see some hidden files and directories on the GoFlex Home but still no actual time machine files.

I then got the adaptor for the Network Drive to turn it into an external USB 3.0 drive. I could then see and mount a time machine directory that was now visible as .timemachinebackup on the GoFlex Drive. When I reboot with install disk to perform restore the GoFlex Drive is not recognized as having any backups to restore from. Is there another terminal command or some type of special mounting I am missing? BTW - The GoFlex Drive appears as a NTFS drive in the Disk Utility.

IMac (Intel) :: Can't Restore Time Machine File

Sep 12, 2014

I tried following the Pondini instructions for restoring individual files but I must be doing something wrong. To restore the address book, he says "open finder window". No problem. Then "enter time machine then navigate to the backup in question". When I open time machine, it only wants to back up. I can't access any files from there. I can only access the files from the backup folder but then there is no "restore" button. How do I restore the address book that I backed up in time machine?

ICloud :: Will A Restore From Time Capsule Wipe IMac

Apr 24, 2012

My iMac was stolen by burglars on Friday. Sunday evening, when I found out, I ordered a remote wipe (from my Air) on the stolen iMac.  Apparently, it hasn't yet come online, though, so the wipe hasn't happened. Today I went a bought a new iMac, and right now I am restoring my (old/stolen) iMac onto my new iMac to a Time Capsule that the thieves didn't find. Suddenly, I got very worried: When it finishes restoring, and says "hi" to the internet,  - will it appear to be the stolen iMac and be wiped?

In other words: how does iCloud identify the stolen computer - by the machine, or by it's content?(pretty worried right now, since I don't remember the six digit code that will need to be entered IF it is wiped; I made it up when I was completely frantic from the shock of walking into a home that was broken in to.)

OS X :: How To Use Old Time Machine With New IMac

Nov 20, 2008

I just today bought a new iMac to replace my old one. When I powered the new one on for the first time, I told it to restore all data from the Time Machine back up from the old machine. That all worked fine. However, when I set the time machine drive as the new machine's time machine drive, it does not recognise the existing backups i.e when I launch time machine, I can't go back through time.

Does anyone know how to get a new machine to reference old time machine backups?

IMac :: Why Does Time Machine Slow Down

Sep 24, 2009

I have a 6 month old top of the line iMac. I always can tell immediately if Time Machine is running b/c the computer becomes choppy. This lasts for the duration of the backup. It is most noticeable when I move my mouse. The mouse starts to act jumpy rather than gliding. In activity monitor it shows during the backup that I still have 50-80% idle so I don't understand why I take such a performance hit. I do backup wirelessly to a Time Capsule. Is this the issue? It is often backing up large amounts (though I'm not quite sure why). I'll download about 100MB of pictures and it will do an 800MB backup.

I just can't shake the feeling that something isn't correct. I've noticed this back on regular Leopard and now on Snow Leopard. Apart from this issue my iMac works perfectly. Please let me know if others see this or if you have any ideas what the problem is. Also, if I can't fix this, is there anyway to slow down Time Machine backups (without hacking type stuff) so it only runs once or twice a day? I really don't need hourly backups.

IMac :desktop Hd And Time Machine Backups

Sep 12, 2010

After having my 1TB G-Tech G-Drive Q desktop external h.d. crap out on me for a second or third time, this time for good, I give up on G-Tech. (I also had a faulty 500GB G-Tech portable which had to be replaced.)For many reasons, my iMac's Time Machine backups have to be stored on an external hard drive rather than on our Time Capsule. Two or three times in the past year or so, the external h.d. has become corrupted or something and has had to be reformatted, losing all the previous backups and starting all over again. This time, since the external h.d. is toast, I have no backups at all.

IMac PPC :: Time Machine Backs Up Continuously?

Apr 16, 2012

I have a iMac G5 (PPC chip) running OS 10.5.8 (256 GB HD). Hooked up to the computer is a Time Machine wireless router/backup drive (500GB). The computer HD is currently using 112 GB and the Time Machine has backed up 310 GB.

The problem is that every hour the Time Machine starts backing up and doesn't finish for anywhere from 35 to 45 minutes, then starts again the next hour. This is getting to the point where system performance is getting very slow.  Even if there has been very little activity, the backup happens and the computer slows to a crawl Is this normal? I would hope that minor changes created during an hour would result in a very quick backup, but evidently this is not the case.
