OS X :: Mac Snow Leopard Freezing / Slowdown (Mac Fuse / NTFS 3G & NTFS)

Jun 11, 2010

This is a thread for anyone who is experiencing a large slowdown and/or intermittent 10-60 second freezes on Mac OSX Snow Leopard, where the freezes are completely unrelated to anything you're doing, any app you're using, or whether the system is under heavy or little use. I found the issue stems from the use of Mac Fuse (with NTFS-3G installed) and/or Paragon NTFS for Mac OSX, the combination of these 2 apps essentially doing the same job (NTFS write support), conflicts and causes the hard drive to be under constant (although very little) use, which can randomly cause 30-60 second freezes. If anyone is experiencing these same freezes, uninstall either one app or the other, or both, and that might help remedy the situation. EDIT: updated because I didn't specifically mention which macFUSE plugin I had installed....

OS X :: Native NTFS Support In Snow Leopard?

Nov 23, 2009

I routinely transfer files bigger than 4GB between Windows and OSX. Right now I use ntfs-3g and macfuse. It seems to work, but every now and then I get file transfer errors, like error -36. The jump drives are fine, and the files are OK since I can transfer them to the PCs without a problem. With the "hack" that enables native NTFS R/W for Snow Leopard, I notice people have to enter the UUID of each volume for it to automount. Isn't there a way to set it up so one can just pop a jump drive in and have it automount? I'm dealing with DV files, and each machie is on a different network - different site so I'm pretty much stuck using removable drives.

OS X :: Enable Native NTFS Read / Write In Snow Leopard

Sep 12, 2009

I am sure many of you heard that Snow Leopard was supposed to have native read/write for NTFS partitions. Apple supported NTFS R/W in older SL builds but I guess decided to not to go with it for some reason, however support is still present. For this, you need to modify your /etc/fstab file to mount NTFS partitions for read and write.

First, uninstall NTFS-3G/Paragon if installed.
Open Terminal.app (/Applications/Utilities/Terminal)
Type "diskutil info /Volumes/volume_name" and copy the Volume UUID (bunch of numbers).
Backup /etc/fstab if you have it, shouldn't be there in a default install.
Type "sudo nano /etc/fstab".......................

OS X :: Snow Leopard's Native NTFS Support And Security Settings

Feb 22, 2010

I am using the native NTFS read/write support via the /etc/fstab "hack" for lack of a better term. Since I routinely transfer files bigger than 4GB on a jumpdrive between Windows 7 and OSX I don't really have a choice but to use NTFS. I would rather use this than MacFuse/ntfs-3g since I think it is faster. When I write something to the drive and take it to the Windows 7 machine, the security on the newly written file is set to admin - I have to log in as the admin on the Win7 machine, right click and change the security settings. When I formatted the drive initially (on the Win7 machine), I set it for full control for everyone. Is there a way to force OSX to write the file with the same permissions as the drive?

OS X :: NTFS And NTFS 3G Volume - Doesn't Wake Up After Goes To Sleep

Aug 8, 2009

I have 2 external HDDs that I am sharing with other PCs/Macs over the network. Interestingly, when I look up the info for each volume, only one shows as NTFS-3G whereas the other one shows as just NTFS. And this NTFS volume is causing so much trouble. It doesn't wake up after it goes to sleep, and when I power-cycle it, the data I have put in previously is gone! It doesn't seem to save the data properly. Perhaps because it's just NTFS, not NTFS-3G, I cannot run "Disk Repair" from the Disk Utility app. The button is disabled whereas for other volumes, the button is enabled.

At one time, I had to connect it to a PC to run the disk repair and was able to recover some of the lost data. What the heck is going on? Howcome it is showing as NTFS opposed to NTFS-3G? Both HDDs were formatted from PCs as NTFS. Only difference is that the NTFS is 750GB one, and NTFS-3G one is just 300GB. Does NTFS-3G has size limit?

Applications :: Tuxera NTFS Vs NTFS 3G - Which Better For Normal User?

Aug 8, 2010

My Mac partition recently got corrupted to the point of needing a fresh install. I just starting installing my utilities again and downloaded the newest version of NTFS-3G. While doing this, I noticed that there was a "professional" version of NTFS-3G sold by Tuxera (who makes NTFS-3G). I tried to find information comparing the two, but can't; Even on their own website. Does anyone know what the major differences between them are? Is worth the $31 for a normal user (meaning someone who has a BootCamp partition, but doesn't always copy to and from it)?

OS X :: NTFS Volume (BC) Not Mount Without NTFS 3G - Technical

Feb 6, 2009

I previously used NTFS-3G to write to my NTFS (Boot Camp) volume. Now, I would like to can it, and just use Apple's internal read-only NTFS stuff.. But the drive refuses to mount, if I disable or remove NTFS-3G.. If I try to mount it manually in Disk Utility, it just says "The disk could not be mounted. Try running First Aid".. I tried that, and it did not work (as expected). I have tried to create an empty file with TOUCH command in the root of my NTFS drive, called "ntfs-readonly". I have also tried to put that file in a directory called ".NTFS-3G" in the root. According to this site, it should tell NTFS-3G to mount that drive with Apples read-only driver. But this failed to work as well - getting the same error as above, when trying to mount it manually.

An interresting thing is, that when NTFS-3G is running, the format of the NTFS drive reads "Windows NT Filesystem (NTFS-3G)" - fine, that sounds logical. BUT.. When NTFS-3G is disabled, the format reads "MS-DOS (FAT32)".. Which, of course, is not true. Is Apples NTFS mounter broken on my system, maybe? If so, how can I fix that? I recall, that I removed NTFS-3G and Mac Fuse manually some time ago, using this site as guidance. That involved deleting the files it was using. I was very careful, but MAYBE I deleted one or more files, that Apples internal NTFS read-only driver needed... Can somebody perhaps assist me in some way? What can I try (apart from re-installing OS X using my Time Machine backup..)..?

OS X :: Mapping Other Keys To Volume

Mar 6, 2009

I just got a non-Apple keyboard, the Unicomp 104, and I absolutely love this beast. They even printed me custom "command" and "option" keys when I asked them to. The only thing I miss is that there are no volume control keys. Now, I found this link with a little hack to make an Applescript to change the volume: [URL]

This is much better than nothing, however I wonder if anyone knows how to map the vol+, vol-, and mute keys to other keys on the keyboard. I'd rather have that, because that way gives me the white volume box, and has the popping sound to give me an idea of the volume level, and can be modified with option for more incremental control, etc.

What he'd like to do is be able to map the side button on the might mouse to the control key so he can just click that and then scroll up to zoom in (so there is no need to hold the physical key on the keyboard).

OS X :: Drive Mapping / Moving Content Between Drives

Aug 23, 2009

I want to move all my movies and TV shows to a 1TB external drive that used to be my Time Machine (now I have a 2TB Time Machine.) Half of the content is on my iMac's internal drive, the other half is on a 500 GB external called "Media Extension." If I close iTunes, rename the Media Extension to something else, then rename the 1TB to Media Extension and move all the files, will iTunes still see all the files that were on the Media Extension? Obviously it won't see all the files that were on the internal drive, so I'd have to remap those. Similarly, will Time Machine add additional copies of all the files or will it see them as the same since they are still on "Media Extension." I might just blow away all my TV shows and movies from iTunes and then drop them back in and wipe out my Time Machine so I don't duplicate all these movies, but just wondering if I can reduce the work in this way.

Hardware :: Apple Bluetooth Keyboard - Size And Key Mapping

May 20, 2010

I really need to free up one of the USB ports on my iMac, so was looking at the bluetooth keyboard. Now, I can probably get used to the lack of the number pad, but I'm more concerned about the lack of the delete key. Backspace is great, but I'm a full-time writer and sometimes the delete is a heck of a lot more useful. My local Apple store is a LONG way away, so I've got a couple of questions:

Is the keyboard itself the same size as the regular full wired keyboard? That is, are the keys the same size, spaced the same, etc (eg, the regular full keyboard with everything on the right-hand side chopped off)? Secondly, is it possible to map the delete key function onto another key that I don't use? Looking at a map of the bluetooth keyboard I'm not sure which key exactly I'd want to map it to as they've got rid of all the extras on the fullsize which I don't use.

Hardware :: Cannot Recognize Drive / Deleted Partition Mapping?

Nov 8, 2007

I was moving partitions in VolumeWorks and accidentally ejected the Lacie Disk. Now whenever I try to use it i get this:
http://img141.imageshack.us/img141/4281/erroram9.jpg

I clicked initialize once, but I closed DiskUtility and it never had time to do anything. I know this because I can still use DataRescue to get my files. The problem is, the files will not be named or organized correctly! On disk utility, it will not let me mount the the drive (although it still shows the icon on disk utility) so I cannot repair it. Shoot, apparently initializing it removes the partition map. How can I get the partition structure back in place?

OS X :: Leopard Upgrade To Snow Leopard ... The Same As The Full Version Of Snow Leopard?

Jun 13, 2009

... long time reader, first time poster!! So I'm doing it. I'm switching from PC to Mac. I've been waiting for a while now and the new MacBook Pro's have convinced me. I'm buying the 13 inch this week.

However I'm slightly worried about the upgrade to Snow Leopard in September.

My question is if I buy a new MacBook Pro this week and upgrade from the current version of Leopard to Snow Leopard will it be the EXACT same as the version of Snow Leopard that ships with new MacBooks after September?

Is the upgrade just the same as the full software version available post September? Does the upgrade it just detect if you have the previous software and installs as if it were the full? Or does it just "patch" things depending on what's different from previous versions?

I can wait till after Snow Leopard is released in September 09 if it is different to Leopard upgraded to Snow Leopard.

Hardware :: AEBS Dual-Band - Adding SMTP Port Mapping Causes Lockup?

Mar 4, 2009

I just bought one of the new dual-band AirPort Extremes, to replace an older AirPort Extreme (the last generation before this one). I exported my configuration from the old AEBS to a baseconfig file, disconnected the old AEBS, and plugged in the new one. I then imported the baseconfig file, only to find that although its light will turn green, the AEBS will no longer show up in AirPort Utility. To get it back, I have to do a hard reset of the AEBS.

Through painstaking troubleshooting, I have determined that the problem occurs if the configuration includes a port mapping for SMTP (port 25). If I create all of my port mappings (and there are many) BUT that one, then all is well; but as soon as I add a port 25 port mapping and Update the AEBS, it will not restart properly (green light but no one is home).
