MacBook Pro :: Can Have IWork And Microsoft Office Both On An System

Dec 12, 2010

When I bought my mbp 13" the guy talked me into iWork. To my surprise after a couple days of cursing I found out I really do like iWork a lot. The only problem is my school prefers Microsoft Office programs. I understand you can change the file extensions in iWork and such. But the problem I'm running into is that I need to use certain add-ins for excel (particularly Data Solver) that aren't available for Numbers

Windows On Mac :: Running Microsoft Office On XP Or Mac's Version Of Office?

Sep 5, 2008

I'm not sure if this is the right place for my question, but I wanted to get opinions from you guys. I use Microsoft Word, Excel and sometimes, Power Point quite often at college. They have PCs of course... and I have an iMac. And I wanted to get Microsoft Office at home.

Now, I was looking on the web for different prices and all that. I wasn't sure between buying Windows XP (because I work with XP at college, not Vista) and downloading Bootcamp, or Microsoft Office for Mac. Also, I wasn't sure if the Mac version was similar to the one for Windows... and also if I could transfer files from the PC to Mac versions without problems.

Basically, money wise, if I buy one or the other, there isn't too much of a difference. But I haven't looked everywhere for the best prices available, although I'm guessing it's pretty much the same most places (internet).

Applications :: IWork 09 Compared To Microsoft Office Compared To AbiWord

Mar 11, 2009

I'm getting my first Mac tomorrow, an iMac 24" 2.8. After 20 years on PCs, I'm fed up with Windows. I've been fairly methodical in going over the PC, inch by inch and file by file, to make sure everything I need is brought over and can be used on the iMac. One of the biggest problems is 15 years of documents which were prepared in WordPerfect. I understand that neither iWork or MS Office can convert them. I also heard of AbiWord, a freeware program which can view and convert almost anything. So, I have a few choices. Since I'm going through each doc to see if I even need it or want it, I can convert each one in WordPerfect after I make the decision, to an MS Doc file (MS WORD 2003, RTF, ANSI, ASCII, or other files. If I do that, will iWork be able to read the file? What would be the best format to convert it too?

Or, I can decide what to keep and bring it over in WordPerfect format. When and if I need it, I can use AbiWord to convert at that time. Of course, this means adding an application to my computer. Does iWork/Pages emulate MS Word in the ability to read and convert other formats? What is the native format for saving in iWork? Is it a .DOC file? Any suggestions for the best method for me to transfer the files to the new computer and eventually use them? Does any program Batch process the conversions? BTW: I already purchased iWork, because of my belief that its 100% compatible with MS Office, and because it appears that any type of document I want to produce can be accomplished in iWork.

Does it let you run applications for windows transparently through the MAC OS? As in, I insert the installation disk for office 2007, the setup menu comes up, I install it, and I get to put the word icons on the dock, I can open word/excel/whatever and just runt he applications without having to boot in to some sort of an emulation mode or whatever?

Whilst still waiting for the MBP refresh, I would like some advice on which office software you would recommend.

I have decided to convert from being a pc user to have a go with a mac as i have heard so much positive info about its OSX operating system.

I have many word files etc (obviosuly coming from a pc).

What would you recommend,

iwork (55 pre installed)
office for mac (?)
open office (free)

Which one if all of these will enable me to just plug in my usb stick and download all my word/ excel files and pictures without any issues and edit/ change/send again without any issues.

Applications :: When Microsoft Releasing Newer Version Of Microsoft Office For Mac?

Oct 2, 2009

Does anybody know when Microsoft plans on releasing a newer version of Microsoft Office for Mac? One of my co-workers currently own the 2008 version and he's really unhappy with it. He has an excel file that's around 4MB in filesize, containing some 11,000 rows and a bunch of columns too and it's really slow to work with (he has a 1 year old MacBook Pro) and some times excel also "runs out of memory" it says and the application just freezes. It should be updated properly etc, but I wonder if maybe a newer version more suited for Snow Leopard, might be released soon?

Software :: Microsoft Updates Office 2004 And Office 2008 For Mac

Aug 12, 2008

Microsoft on Tuesday released stability and performance updates for Office 2004 and Office 2008 for Mac, both of which also patch vulnerabilities that could allow an attacker to overwrite the contents of a computer's memory by using malicious code.

Microsoft Office 2004 for Mac 11.5.1 Update

Aside from the security fix, Microsoft Office 2004 for Mac 11.5.1 Update [14.5MB] also updates the Japanese postal code dictionary in Entourage and fixes an issue that causes Word 2004 to close unexpectedly when opening a document that contains a numbered list.

Microsoft Office 2008 for Mac 12.1.2 Update

The 12.1.2 update for Office 2008 for Mac [159.6MB] is more substantial, repairing a global issue that prevented all Office 2008 applications from running AppleScript scripts from the Script menu, while also delivering a number of individual fixes for Word, Excel and Entourage.

More specifically, Microsoft said Word should now launch more quickly and tables will no longer included random instances of bold text. Other changes improve the display of form fields and the reliability of headers & footers in the word processing application.

Meanwhile, Excel should now open spreadsheet files that contain invalid characters and see improvements to the overall performance of calculations. Number formatting for some international languages and stability when saving workbooks that contain PivotTable reports has also been improved.

One of the major focus areas for Entourage was to improve stability when using Microsoft Sync Services, Microsoft said. In particular, Tuesday's update fixes an issue that where all contacts in Entourage or in the Apple Address Book would be deleted and re-created when you use Microsoft Sync Services. It should also prevent duplication of events and other items in Entourage or in iCal.

Other changes to Entourage focused on improving junk mail filtering, recurring calendar events, time zone information, embedded images, and the reliability when Entourage establishes a encrypted channel.

Student Office 2008 deal

Earlier Tuesday, Microsoft said it has teamed with a select few Apple authorized resellers like Amazon.com to offer students up to 30 percent off its various Office 2008 productivity suites when they're purchased alongside a new Mac before September 8th.

The offer translates into $15 off Office 2008 Home and Student Edition, $80 off Office 2008 Standard Edition, and $150 off Office 2008 Special Media Edition..

Amazon is also offering between $50 and $200 rebates on Apple's entire Mac line through August 25th.

Software :: Which Is Best - IWork Or Microsoft Word

Jul 19, 2008

I just bought my first computer in November. The Apple Store manager (who was great btw) insisted that I needed The Microsoft Word program, which I bought. I rarely use it. Today I found out I had a 30 day trial version of iWork on my computer and took the little tour. Fortunately I am not familiar with either program enough to have a preference. My needs are mostly personal. I do need to be able to do inventory, fliers, etc. for my 'at home' business, projects and/ or informative stuff for my kids school, and various personal projects. I like it clean, creative and simple. But I have a few questions:

1.) Why would the manager tell me I needed Word, if I had iWork already on my computer? (aren't they just 2 different versions of the same thing? iWork looks better.)

2.) Does that 30 day 'trial' start when I bought my MacBook or when I first use it?

OS X :: IWork 09 Or Office 08?

Aug 23, 2010

I have been a PC all my life and I am going to be switching to Mac very soon. Im sure this is always asked. But im trying to figure out if I should get iWork or Microsoft Office 2008 for mac.

Im in high school, so I will be using it for school work. I will be using it for college as well when I get there. As far as I know I wont be doing any advanced work.

I like the fact that if I got iWork it would be made my apple so it runs smoother than office. However, Im hesitant about getting iWork because most people do use office and I might learn one thing at school on office and I might not know how to do that on iWork.

Ive also hear that iWork isnt half as good as office and that a lot of things are missing from iWork that office has.

I also wanted to know if I can make iWork automatically save my douments as a .doc.

Software :: Better/Office 2008 Or IWork 09?

Nov 30, 2009

Which is better? Neo Office/Open Office are ok. The UI for both really suck, so I want to pick a good package...

I can get Office Home and Student for 89 dollars on Amazon.

There are also some things that just don't work right in the Neo/Open Office packages like labels. I have already been through that frustration. Even iWork doesn't have the same label support as Office... at least as far as I could tell. I have iWork 08 but I got frustrated with it making labels. That's just one example.

I am a college student and am about to get my first Mac. I found out through student discounts I can get Office professional for $59.99 but just noticed that iWork can open and save as .Doc, .PPT, etc. and I can get it for $71.

I am not a heavy user of any Office programs and would really only use this for school, etc.

What would you suggest I go with?
