OS X Mavericks :: Recover Unsaved PDF That Was Open In Preview?
Aug 20, 2014
I opened a web page from a browser via Print -> PDF -> Open PDF in Preview but then unintentionally close that window and the PDF was not saved - is there any way to restore it? And no, that page in the browser can no longer be opened.

Preview's new annotations features are awesome. I'm finally able to read on my computer and make notes in an easy way. This is all good. Except that there apparently is no auto-save feature in Preview. I was working on a PDF and had lots of notes and then accidentally hit the keyboard shortcut for "Move selected PDF to Trash" (this, IMO, should not even exist, or at least should be something more complicated than command+delete or, at the very least, have a confirmation of deletion window). Anyway, once I moved the PDF back to its original file location and opened it back up, all the notes (lots of them) that had been added before the last save were now gone. I'm stupid, I know. Anyone know of anyway that I might be able to recover my changes from some temp file stored somewhere or something? Oh, and when I select File>Open Recent, it's always empty. Not sure why, not an option in Preview Preferences.

I didn't realize final draft had autosave disabled by default. Long story short, the program crashed, my work along with it. I didn't save the work. It was not auto saved. Would like to recover the work if possible.

Computer details:
13" Macbook Pro - mid-2012 (9.2)
2.9 GHZ
750 GB Hard Drive
8 GB RAM
OS: 10.8.2
I tried to open a single image in Preview (Version 6.0.1 (765.4)). Instead, it opened just over 500 images (out of 2300 on the hard drive) as "Untitled 1" "Untitled 2" etc. Over three hundred of those were grouped in a single window (that is, one of them was visible large, with thumbnails of all in the "drawer"). Why it opened the files as "Untitled", nor, in fact, why it opened them at all. I had only clicked on one to open it. I quit Preview, but upon reopening, all the "Untitled" images were back. The same thing happened when opening Preview after restart. The only way I could get rid of them was to close their windows one at a time. Of course, when closing something that's unsaved, the computer asks whether to save it or not, but I cannot click Command-D (as in previous systems), I have to click the Don't Save button each and every time. This takes ages with so many windows open.
Well, since I had no choice, I did that for the couple hundred images that had opened in their own window(s). Then I tried to close the images in the single window. I would do Command-W, then click Don't Save. The dialog closed, but the image didn't go away. Then a new Save dialog box would open with a different "untitled" number specified, and I would do it again. And again. And again. The images, however, did not disappear. Then I saw that the names (Untitled 101, Untitled 204, etc) of some of the images I had previously attempted to close were coming back again. They had not actually closed. I could not get rid of that window with three hundred images open in it. If I quit Preview, then reopened it, ALL of the 500 plus images opened again, even the ones I had successfully closed. The application is now useless until I find a fix.

I used to open my printer job as the item was printing and it would open with preview and then I could click on it and mail a copy to myself. I since installed the latest OSX Maverick and now my printer job opens with something else and I can't do anything with it except see what I am printing.

Everytime I time to open a PDF file in Preview I get the msg, the file couldn't be opened because you don't have permission to view it. I have checked the GET INFO and all permissions are correct.

I have no idea what happened. Overnight, Preview completely stopped working. When I double click a PDF, it'll bounce around a while in the dock and then the icon will stay there, though without the dot below it indicating that it should be running. When I right-click the icon, it says "Application Not Responding" and gives me the option to force quit it. I'm running Snow Leopard 10.6.1. I tried deleting the com.apple.preview... file in username/library/preferences and restarting Preview, but that did nothing. Anyone have a clue what went wrong here?

I have MacBook Air that I had to recover document from a week old back-up files from the Time Machine backup disk. All the documents are copied back to the clean slate MacBook, but mails that are archived in the old hard disk is lost. Is there a way to recover them?
In a current hard disk, /Users/me/Library/Containers/com.apple.mail/Data/Library...I see Mail Downloads folder. I don't know where the mail messages are stored. I don't see anything like this in the backup volume. Where can I look for?

Working offline during a flight, I created a new "Mailbox" -- i.e. a subfolder -- within an account in Mail and moved some messages into it. Back on the ground and reconnected with the Internet, that subfolder has disappeared, along with all the messages in it. Where did it go? Is it possible to recover it?
If it makes any difference, it was a Gmail account accessed via IMAP.

Just recently reinstalled Snow Leopard on my built from scratch Mac. And for some weird reason everything I open in the Preview program is just white. Doesn't matter the file and it shows up in the little finder preview and as the icons.
Has me stumped.
Anybody have any ideas how to fix?
A place I can goto reinstall Preview?
Or perhaps a great alternative for the program? I've heard of JView/JustLooking, any opinions on those two programs?
UPDATE: I take back what I said, it only doesnt seem to open image files like tif/jpg... pdfs apparently work fine in preview. And if I have it on a blank image in preview for too long it will crash.

I'd like to make sidebar visible in Preview v. 4.2 every time I open a PDF document. In Preferences, the "Open Sidebar Only for TOC" is unchecked and according to this thread, it seems that Sidebar should always open otherwise. Mine doesn't & I have to open manually for each file.

I have an external USB HDD that was originally formatted as Mac OS Extended (journaled), it was accidentally erased (using Disk utility) and re-formatted to FAT32. the HDD has not been used since (other than to try and recover the data using various tools), so no new data was been written to it.
Any methods that could be used to recover the data from the drive?i've tried DiskWarrior but that can't do anything with the drive as it's not a "macintosh disk".

This week I upgraded my Macbook Pro 13 (2011) from Snow Leopard to Mavericks 10.9.2. Initially I had problems with email crashing and Preview not launching. I then found the upgrade to 10.9.4 and installed that. This cured the email issue but I still cannot launch Preview.

I have updated my system to OS X Maverick and have lost the ability to "print preview" my files before saving. I frequently save files as jpeg files, as well as pdf. I have found that many of our flyers print better when saved as a jpeg but since the print preview option has been eliminated, I cannot save anything as a jpeg.

Is this possible? I find it annoying to have a file open in Preview and then having to either locate it or save it to allow me to open it in something else (like Acrobat or Photoshop). An example: I have just been sent a pdf that I need to open in Acrobat pro to merge with another one. Using Entourage the only things I can do are save or open, opening it results in it opening in Preview - which is usually what I'd prefer, but in this instance, I need to edit it, so I have to save it somewhere and then open it again from Acrobat. Preview is great, don't get me wrong, and not having to open up the whole program first in most cases is brilliant, but sometimes it's a pain that I can't subsequently open the file I'm previewing in a different program.

IWhen I mount and open it, it contains three files: autorun.inf, edisk.dat and SVOLBRO.EXE. I am assuming that it is the edisk.dat file that I should be reading but I can not open it. I have spoken to the company who say that it should contain an encrypted pdf file. I have tried copying and renaming the file to edisk.pdf and then using preview but I am getting an error message saying the preview is unable to open the file.

I have been using preview to investigate screen shots I've been taking. The problem is preview is opening every single file I've viewed with it when I open it. I take a lot of screenshots.
How do I get image preview to open JUST the image I told it to open? How do I make it stop opening multiple images at once when I don't ask it to?

When I want to scroll through a folder with pictures, I usually drag the folder from the Finder to the Preview icon in my dock. Is there a way to open Preview with a keyboard shortcut? I know about pressing the spacebar to open Quicklook, but I prefer Preview.

Stupid mistake, simple question. Was taking down some notes in TextEdit, closed file by mistake without saving. Anything I can do?
I should point out the file does exist, it just obviously reverted back to the state it was in before I did the particular hour or so of work in it.
EDIT: Should also point out I'm not using Time Machine.
