OS X Mavericks :: Used Diskwarrior And Now All Users Are Gone

Jun 4, 2014

My girlfriend was using her Macbook Pro as usually when the Safari browser froze. She used the power buttom to turn it off and when she turned it back on her discs were gone. Now it was only possible to log in on the recovery-10.9.3.

So I used the disk utility, which showed that her partitions under a new names (Toshiba 750 Gb something). I ran the verify Disk and repair disk tools, which told me that there was a "Invalid B-tree Node size error" or something. There's is some importatnt files on the her hard disk (and of cause no backup) so I didn't dare to erase it completely. So I read about it and figured that I needed to run the Diskwarrior software.

Diskwarrior couldn't find the right disk, but it found a disk called "customer" which we ran the software on. After this the disk changed name to "untitled" and the disk utility no longer found any problems, so I went home because I though I only had to setup the system again. I reinstalled the OS, but now there is only a user called "Other..." that needs a Name and a Password (neither of which we can figure out).

I cant boot the su (CMD -S) directly from startup. I can boot from the Recovery partition, but I can't run the "sudo" command from the terminal window found in there.

OS X Mavericks :: Missing Users At Log In

Aug 29, 2014

I migrated from an older OS X Mac to a newer 27" iMac via Time Machine backup. The user accounts were created perfectly during the migration, as was the Admin account. On first start up on the log in screen, and ever since, the users' icons or names & passwords will not be displayed, but the Guest and Admin icons will display properly. I can log in as Admin, then go to the fast user switching screen, and all the accounts are displayed and behave the way they should. Automatic log in is turned off.

OS X Mavericks :: Can't Open Users And Groups Using 10.9.3

Jun 27, 2014

I am trying to edit my login items as apparently from what I have been told that is the only way to get my Belkin n52te speed pad to work with OS X Mavericks, however when I click on Users&Groups in System Preferences I just keep getting "Preferences error: Could not load Users and Groups preference pane" I have tried rebooting, I have tried going into terminal and showing hidden files to see if there is a corrupted duplicate of the system preferences file.

None of the fixes I have found by Googling the issue to find posts about it have worked. As I said in the beginning I have a belkin n52te speed pad that I cannot change the keybindings for because Mavericks will not recognize the device as being plugged in. When I run the keybind editor program and from what I was able to find about that issue online it has to do with editing the login items to include a file from the installer and then rebooting and trying again. I could just hook into my windows PC since that actually works but its difficult to have to unplug the pad and hook it into my windows PC anytime I need to make any changes to the keymaps, so getting my mac to work.

OS X Mavericks :: Finding And Deleting Hidden Users

Jul 2, 2014

A few weeks ago I upgraded to 10.9.3, enabled keys function, etc. Since then, I've been having major issues with my computer - there seems to be a hidden user who changes permissions. I get error messages at times saying files are being used by another user or I don't have permission to view some folders under Documents or Library//Application Support that I routinely use.

In Terminal I ran whois on some of the hidden folders this user has on my computer and was able to see various .com / .net addresses associated with the files, which I ran who's to learn more about.

Net / net, I need a command line in Terminal to list hidden users and then delete them. BTW, I've spoken with tech support for hours yesterday and we even erased my hard drive, reinstalled OS X and the hidden users are still there. We've identified it's not a problem with our carrier. things are routinely in my Trash, such as music files I never deleted and other misc. files that even after I Secure Empty Trash, show up again (random plist files, keys, etc.). Hardware Overview:OX XVersion 10.9.3 (13D65)2.4 GHz Intel Core i7Memory 8 GB 1600 MHz DDR3

OS X Mavericks :: Switching USB Scanner Between Users On Same Machine

Aug 24, 2014

I have a neat scanner connected to my mac via USB.  My wife and I both use the scanner and have separate accounts on the same machine. The issue is that the scanner gets "connected" to either one user or the other.  Let's say the scanner is working fine for user A.  User B can't use the scanner properly.  It seems like first come first serve.  When user B pushes the scan button on the device and user B is the active account on OSX.  User A's account still gets the popup window responding to the scan request. I guess I am looking for a terminal command, or some procedure, so that user B can come in and gain access to the scanner without logging out user A.

OS X Mavericks :: Network Users - Can't Login Without Home Folder

Jun 17, 2014

We upgraded our lab from 10.6.8 to 10.9.3. Preserving our settings and bootcamp by simply upgrading. After getting nearly all machines sorted out with active directory we are still having a problem with 2-3 machines with network user accounts being able to login. If no local home folder has been created prior to upgrading to 10.9.3 then the user cannot login, the login prompt dissapears then re-appears.

Here is a run down of the set-up.

Our settings force network users to have a local home folder on the local mac that they are logging into.

Mac OS X server is 10.6.8.

Active directory server is 2012 R2.

Network users without a pre-created home folder on the local mac prior to upgrade cannot login. The login prompt dissapears, then re-appears. No login.

Computers are managed with workgroup manager, as well as apple remote desktop. But no settings are applied, and no login scripts are being run.

Also I have noticed something concerning Mac OS X 10.8.5 and up. And that is in the active directory settings, if you bind to a domain (using active directory and not LDAP), lets say for example:

mydistrict.maindistrict.net

And you go to add your local active directory district to the Authentication/Contacts search policy eg: Active Directory/mydistrict.maindistrict.net

it will only show: Active Directory/mydistrict/alldomains.maindistrict.net.

It shows a list of all domains for the forest. But it also adds the district that you bound to as the search directory?

Let me use a precise example using actual names.

Bind to local district: pineville.ketsds.net

Now in search policy on 10.8.5 up to 10.9.3 it displays possible search domains like this:

Active Directory/PINEVILLE/pineville.ketsds.net <- The domain we want.

Active Directory/PINEVILLE/all-other-domains-in-forest.ketsds.net <--Which is fine.

Which is all fine, but when we select  the local domain for authentication, and contacts search it adds it, but in the overview it says that it is not in our search policy even though it is.

On Mac OS X versions below this (10.6.8 and down, cannot verify for 10.7 as we do not have systems with it) it displays the search domains as:

Active Directory/pineville.ketsds.net

as compared to  this on 10.8.5 and above:

Active Directory/PINEVILLE/pineville.ketsds.net

As well as all the other domains, and when you add the local to the search policy it does not give the error that it is not in your search policy. Is there anyway to make this happen on 10.8.5 and above? We have tried everything. Network accounts will login even though it says this, it is just annoying.

Last question is on one computer that we upgraded, we had a problem with the network accounts. Tried deleting the .plist for network preferences, and the Directory services folder as well as the Open directory folder and now it create the open directory folder as locked and any changes made with the directory utility in the search policy is immediatley reverted once we hit apply.

Summary of questions:

1.) Network users cannot login without local folder created prior to upgrade.

2.) Mac OS X 10.8.5 and above does not correctly add Authentication/Contact search policy domains as it does in 10.6.8 and below.

3.) Active Directory/Open Directory Authentication/Contact search policy settings keey reverting after applying. (Happened prior to deleting .plist files and AD/OD folders in /Library/Preferences)

OS X Mavericks :: User In Print Sharing Dialogue But Not Users And Groups

At one point I added a new account to my print sharing.  I later turned printer sharing off for that account.  But here's what's strange:  If I go into Sharing > Printer Sharing, and click the "+" to add a user, that account still shows up as eligible to add.  However - that user account does NOT show up anywhere under "Users & Groups" in the general Systems Preferences pane.  So, essentially, I have a User Account that can share resources, but I can't remove it. How to remove a user account from sharing eligibility when it's NOT showing up in "Users & Groups"?

OS X :: How To Copy Data Using Diskwarrior?

Sep 1, 2010

An HFSJ mac HD crashed from another mac. I connected it externally, via USB, to a working macbook pro and installed diskwarrior on the working macbook pro's hard drive.

I started diskwarrior from the OS (I didn't boot using the disc) and it ran for a few days, trying to rebuild the directory for the crashed mac HD.

It concluded that the crashed mac HD was mechanically failing and could not replace the original directory with the rebuilt directory and, therefore, it could not display an original and preview pane, side-by-side.

It was, however, able to offer just the preview of the rebuilt directory and advised that I copy the data off to another storage device, which I am attempting to do now.

The problem is the preview directory is locked and read-only.

When I attempt to copy files over to another storage device, OS X, with respect to the preview directory, indicates that "The operation cannot be completed because you do not have sufficient privileges for some of the items.

I clicked on get info for the preview directory and the permissions are grayed out. There is a checkmark for the "Ignore ownership of this volume" checkbox. For my username, it says read and write, and I am the sole user on this machine.

it also has "staff" and "everyone" as usernames, where "staff" is read & write and "everyone" is read only. The lock is locked and, like the rest of this section, grayed out and cannot be changed.

I realize that DiskWarrior automatically locks the preview of the rebuilt directory. But how am I supposed to copy files to a different storage device if I can't change permissions?

Edit: I should mention it is DiskWarrior 4.2 and Mac OS X 10.5.8. The crashed Mac HD I am unsure, but I found a user guide on it for Tiger. So, it is probably 10.4.x

OS X :: Diskwarrior Error-9997?

May 10, 2010

I got this error from Diskwarrior and am wondering what the deal is?
Here are the details:

My 80GB hard drive crashed and burned on my Macbook Pro Dual 1.83 running 10.5.8. I used Carbon Copy Cloner to clone the drive before it went totally kaput and then cloned it back onto a new drive that I installed into the MBP.

Upon running Diskwarrior 3.3 on the new clone in the MBP to look at permissions, I got error -9997. Do you know what that error indicates?

Googling it tells me that, if you get that error in 10.3 or 10.4 via Disk Utility (not DW) then you are missing a basesystem.pkg file. See:
[URL]

Looking back on the original clone, this file doesn't exist where the KB thread says it should so I'm assuming 10.5.8 doesn't use the same file in the same place.

I ran disk utility on the drive to look at permissions and other than a few corrected permissions, it didn't say there were any other errors.

So, which do I trus, disk utility or DW? Is this just a disconnect between the old DW 3.3 and 10.5.8 (I mean the old DW not reading 10.5 correctly for some reason) ?

Or do I need to do a clean install from the systems disk (something I really don't want to do if possible)?

OS X Server V10.6 Snow Leopard :: Cannot Edit Users In Workgroup Manager, New Users Cannot Login

Feb 13, 2012

Today when we started trying to add users to our server (we use it only for afp access at this time), we noticed that new users belonging to a group "storage" were unable to login from client machines via afp (clients both 10.7.2 and 10.6.8).

When we tried editing the users accounts to change which groups they belonged to, it would appear in workgroup (and server preferences) that the changes would take but there was still no access.

As a test case, we modified an existing user who had no issues logging in to belong to a diffenent group and have different sharepoint access. The changes looked good in workgroup and server prefs, but when the user logged in, he was only able to acces his old sharepoint and not the new one (and since his permissions to the old were removed, he shouldn't have access to that sharepoint).

Also, for some reason users cannot be deleted within workgroup manager any more. The login used was the diradmin account.

MacBook Pro :: What Video Format (including Embedded Audio) Can Be Viewed By Both OSX Lion Users And PC Users

Mar 22, 2012

I am currently am MBA student and must create projects using power point/ keynote, very often. Many of the power points/ keynotes created by students are informative but lack the ability to hold an audience’s attention (boring). Since I have this wonderful Macbook pro, I would like to create a dynamic keynote presentation which would include clips of audio and video files (I already know about converting keynote to power point). The only problem is, the videos I want to use in the keynote presentation are not able to be manipulated in iMovie (due to their format), and if they where able to be manipulated in iMovie, I’m not sure that PC users would be able to properly view them.

What video format (including embedded audio) is able to be viewed and heard by both OSX Lion users and Windows users?   If this is possible, can anyone suggest a safe application that I can purchase from the apple app store that will allow me to convert video files (including embedded audio) so that it can be viewed by both Lion and PC users? Preferably one that does not need access to the internet in order to convert the files ( I’m on the go allot and use an air card for internet access), but I will take it if this is the best option.  If the app store does not have this type of application, is there a place that I can download a safe one?

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Boot From Flash Then Run Diskwarrior

I want to run Diskwarrior for directory repair either for maintenance, or after a hard crash – on my 2011 MacBook Pro. Diskwarrior falls out of date everytime Apple updates the OS. I'm currently running Lion. I downloaded the free updater to 4.4, (I have a 4.2) but it still does not boot my mac.I (sort of) solved the problem by installing a full-blown Lion OS on an external firewire hard-drive, booting from it and then running Diskwarrior. Older versions of DW will do directory repair, they just aren't bootable if out of date. What I want to do is to boot from a Flash drive, and then run Diskwarrior.I have created a bootable flash drive, which works, but boots into the Mac OS X Utilities window (the same window you get when you boot into Recovery mode. Even though I'm booted from the flash drive, this window does not let me access Diskwarrior.I also have a 2T Time Capsule attached, can I put a copies of Lion and Diskwarrior on that to solve the problem?
