I have accidentally erased a BIG folder (a couple of gig's) where we kept the last months of our lab's data. I moved it to the trash and as it was too big to fit, i 'accepted' and away it was... when i realized what i did by error, i just left the mac on, and it's still on, untouched, waiting for some way to fix it up. it is running OS 9 point something if i'm not wrong. Maybe it's even OS X with the OS 9 face, i'll check it up 'tough.

how can i delete a file that says that it is still use when the trash can is emptied and the file is not opened
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have a nearly decade-old notebook hard drive, and I'm trying to recover the oldest files possible.
I've tried running some basic undelete/recovery programs on it, but they don't go back very far.
I'm looking for the most powerful tool for this job out there (Mac or Windows software will do).
My delete button is not working in mail. When I press delete it automatically change to undelete, and I can not delete any of my messages.

I have this file that has appeared in my trash bin, this file stays there when I empty the trash. The icon shows full. When I try to "get info" on the file, nothing happens. I drag it out onto the desktop, and it disappears.

I don't think it's in use..
PS. A question I have about gaming on my iMac LINK
There is a certain file in my trash bin that won't delete, I don't believe it is locked or anything, it just says, "The operation cant be completed because the item sixtyforce is in use."
"sixtyforce" was this emulator that I downloaded, but it was the older version of it, so I wanted to delete it, but that message keeps coming up.
I just woke up and noticed that I have a Recovered File in my trash can. It has a "Temp File AAA", ProJlib, Imllib, something else, and another folder containing some quicktime stuff and a bunch of other things. I am not sure what it is as it wasn't there when I went to sleep a few hours ago. I clicked get info and all the stuff says it says last activity was on oct 28 at 5:27 pm. Is this from the daily scripts the mac runs around 3 in the am? I secure emptied the trash already too. Also, Onyx says my weekly and daily scripts were run at 7:15 and 7:30 am....today. Is that normal for them to run just as I turn on my cpu from sleep?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to secure-empty-trash a large backup disk image, about 275 gigs. During the process I had put the computer to sleep a couple times. After that, it seemed to be making no progress. I tried to stop the process so I could try again, and now it says
"Emptying the Trash...
Stopping..."
and has said that for hours with no apparent progress on the status bar. Is there anything I can do get it to finish the process, or to actually stop so I can try again?
I have a Mac Air running Mavericks on a HFS partition and Windows 7 on a BOOTCAMP NTFS partition. I have some files that I want to read/write from/to both systems. Since OS X can't write NTFS and Windows can't write HFS either, and I don't want to use any 3rd-party tools/drivers, in OS X, I copy those files from NTFS to its HFS partition, make changes, then switch to Windows and sync them back to NTFS.
The problem is, after I copied a file from NTFS to HFS in OS X, it seemed ok. But when I switched to Windows, the very copied file in HFS partition had its size changed (bigger) although I didn't make any changes to it in OS X yet. This happens to almost every file I copied, text and binary. For those text files, I tried to open it with EditPlus in Windows and EditPlus reports the correct size on the status bar.

I would like to direct my Documents, Pictures, and "Other" to 3 folders in my downloads folder upon downloading them, either with Safari, with Finder, Folder Actions, Automator, or with any other free tool that does not take up too much CPU load.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI was in the process of deleting Bioshock from a Windows fat32 drive while in OS X on my January 2008 Mac pro when it was unable to do so due permissions on some of the files and folder, so I just placed the whole bioshock folder back on the fat32 formatted drive, however ever since there has been a file in Trash labeled ␀␀␀␀␀. that wont be emptied, I do not receive a error message when I try to empty it, it just remains in there.
I am unable to use the get info right click option as when I do so the ␀␀␀␀␀. file vanishes for a few minutes and then just reappears in the Trash.
I am unable to move the file any where as when I try to do so it is as if I have not clicked on anything and the os does not acknowledge that anything has occurred.
This file keeps appearing in the trash.... The trash can be emptied, and it goes away until you open the trash again, or at login/restart.
View 4 Replies View RelatedSee attached screenshot, I don't even know what that character is in the file name. Anyway it's always in my trash no matter how many times I click "Empty Trash". Don't know what this file is, or how it was made on Jan 1st, 1904.

It seems to be the only way to remove it. You get no error message anytime. The file just has a bunch of ~~~~~ for identification. What caused this and how do you remove it? View 2 Replies View Related'the item "....." cab;t be moved to the Trash because it can't be delete.' The file is just a Safari download icon you often get when downloading a file, and I can't move it or do anything to it, I can't access its info or move it around the desktop.
View 6 Replies View RelatedMy problem is with 300+ files in 2 folders that are left over from mac 9. They are in the trash, and are now locked, utterly. When I try to empty the trash, the error message says "The operation cannot be completed because you do not have sufficient privileges for some of the items." As you may know, when dealing with multiple "disks" (read: partitions), Mac X puts a .Trash or .Trashes folder on each disk. The trash folders on my computer are located on the following paths:
/users/(my name)/.Trash
/volumes/HD_1/.Trashes/501.................
Everytime I reboot, there are recovered files in my trash. Its not a big deal, but its been such an annoyance. Is there any way to stop it from happening...? I take of my computer (everything updated, run maintenance every couple weeks, etc.)
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a new MAC with Leopard 10.5. I attached a western digital external disk which has 4 partions. In one of the partitions I copied from my MS PC various documents. I now want to delete them by sending them to the trash. when i move them there, nothing happens as they still remain on the disk. All docs are with the read/write permission. I'm the only user and the docs were placed there with the same user profile that now wants to get rid of them. I also downloaded the TRASHiT software, but the files and folder still do not get moved/killed. What else can I do? I would like to avoid the easy way out which I would presume would be to format the disk again...

you can rename, move or even trash a file when you still have it opened in preview or textedit. In win, such action will be stopped by the message "can't do that, the file is open somewhere". Would that data going to be kind of homeless or become a "ghost"?
