OS X Mavericks :: Messages Not Installed Correctly From Time Machine
Aug 25, 2014
I recently restored my iMac from a time machine backup and it looks like Messages didn't install correctly. Basically, the app is blank, displaying no messages or options in the menu bar (see album: [URL]). Looking for a possible solution without installing a fresh OS.

So I am sending my Air to Apple for a warranty, and of course I need to wipe the HD prior to sending it. Now how do I do a time machine backup and restore (when I get it back) of my air to have a correct copy of the previous mac without hints that his was a previous install.
The reason why I am asking this is I've done TM restores before, and they would duplicate the files. Like there would be an "old mac" folder where all the old applications are.

I have been trying to backup my computer for the longest time. It has been stuck on (53.4MB of 62.5MB) for about 45 minutes now. Any ideas? It is on an ethernet connection.

I understand Time Machine taking a longer time initially when first installed, however my Time Machine seems to always be running, backing up ALL my files each time not just the newer ones. i.e. "it" (Time Machine) is always running.

When archiving my Exchange account locally on my Mac, the server keeps syncing the messages back to my Mac! Ideally I would like my MacBook Pro to 'lead' the sync rather than 'combine'. I have tried many options including setting up a 'rule' which didn't move a single message! Also I tried copying all the messages, placing them in a local file & then deleting them from the inbox. But anything over around 10 messages, it just doesn't work! I have around 3000 messages I need to archive & cannot do it ten at a time. Also if I try using the web account on a browser it only allows me to move around ten at a time...! I am running 10.9.4 using Mac Mail.

I just replaced my old 08 Mac Book with a new MacBook. I migrated my files from the old computer using Time Machine. Everything looks ok except my mail messages didn't seem to load into Mail on the new computer. Connectivity is ok and I have been able to send a d recieve fine but the old messages aren't there. I have mail checking 2 accounts an Exchange account for work and another pop account. Even the messages on the exchange server from before the migration hae not shown up.

Does anyone know if there is a file I can look at on the system to determine what version of the OS is install? I'm no longer able to boot once I updated to 10.7.3 and I want to restore from Time Machine back to 10.7.2 but I don't remember the exact date that I did the update. I want to be able to look at the Time Machine backup files by attaching it to another machine in order to determine when I did the update and restore from that point.

Recently my hard drive crashed. All attempts to revive it failed. I have used Time Machine for years to save my backups on an external hard drive. Can I get Gmail emails I saved to my iMac saved to a flash drive for archiving on my Gmail account? If so, how would I go about extracting and saving the email messages from my Time Machine backups? I have a PC laptop and access to another iMac. I would also like to copy several audio books I had in iTunes. How could I access them?

I am running Mountain Lion 10.8.5 on a MacBook Air. I have email messages saved to Mailboxes in Mail on my hard drive, and these messages are also backed up in Time Machine. How do I delete certain of these backed-up messages? If the files were accessible in the Finder, I know how to use the action menu (gear icon) to delete all backups of the chosen file. But I don't see any way to delete the email messages in Mail on T.M.

Recently had to replace my hard drive on my iMac which had OS X Mavericks. I accidently ignored the Recovery option when I first restarted my Mac not understanding it would completely restore everything as it was. However, im taking the opportunity now to rebuild my Mac manually, learning a lot and saving the space that many of my unneccessary files took up. I've rebuilt my itunes Library including restoring playlists, also my iPhoto library and Album organization. While I am able to replenish all of my mail messages (over 3000) through re-connecting the settings for mail, what I lose is all of my mailboxes and sub-boxes I had set up, as well as those hundreds of messages I had flagged and tagged in various colours. I would like direction on how I can restore my mail settings, messages and mailbox structure from my Time Machine back-ups. Really all I need to know are which files I need to look for from that earlier date and how to safely replace them into my current system.

I have installed 512 mb ram in my white 12" ibook G3 128 mb 900 mhz. I had a really difficulty time installing it. I can't tell if it is installed in the slot totally. I read instructions from "ifixit" to install memory. Instructions said to pull clips back and slide memory into slot. I slid memory in as far as I could, and then pushed the chip down. Some of the gold teeth are still showing, and the chip isn't in straight>
If it is installed correctly, will it show up in the up in the profile, Is there anything else I need to do.

I have time machine running as well as Parallels installed. Every time Time Machine backs up it does a minimum of 18.4GB. I 100% do not have that many changes each hour. BTW, running Snow Leopard. I have a screen shot of all the items I have excluded, but it still is doing it.

Still my back ups are failing. I have 625MB available, but it says back up requires 45.3GB of space. What do I do?

I Just reinstall the MacBookPro from zero, without Time Machine, because some App was making a mess. In this new installing, my mac have another "machine name" and "HDD name" because I can't remember the old ones, so the Time Machine don't recognise the bucks-up, When I enter from Finder in the disk of TM, I see all the backups and files, but when I enter from the App TM, It's Clean.
So how I can "Rename" the TM Bucks-up so I can restore only the file that I want not all ?

I have a external hard drive that I have partitioned with 350 gig allocated for my Time Machine back up. Its telling me "back up faile" and that I need to delet files to free up space. It clearly says in the preference panel that "oldest backup are deleted when disc becomes full. I'm pretty tech savvy and it looks like the Time Machine optiond are pretty simple. Why wont this just continue to save the latest backup over that last one? I dont need a history of backups. I just want to have one back up that I do maybe monthly.

I just upgraded my OS from 10.6.8 Snow Leopard to 10.9.4 Mavericks. My iMac has a 500 GB HD & I was using LaCie 500 GB XHD as TM backup successfully for many years using FW800. I removed the LaCie XHD & will save it in case I ever need those Snow Leopard backups. I bought a new, 2 TB G-Drive to use for my Mavericks TM backup. I am planning to partition the G-drive into a 1.5 TB TM backup volume & a 500 GB volume to use with Carbon Copy Cloner.

we recently bought a new iMac with Mavericks and a Lacie 5big thunderbolt series disk. At the Lacie disk we configured as they were 2 hard dsik of 4 Tb each one and added to time machine. Today the user called saying that time machine only made 2 copies one general at 4pm and the other one at the second disk at 7pm and no more copies until 10pm.
I know that time machine makes copies every hour, every day , every month, etc; so we were thinking why it only made 3 copies in that mount of time and why it took the second disk. In the old iMac with Lion this never happened.

Can I create 2 partitions into portable hard disk where the first formatted as HFS+ to use only for Time Machine source, the latter formatted as exFAT/FAT32 to use to swap file from OSX/Windows ?
Time machine will use only the first partition as source, it's possible?
I need to link hard disk both to windows and to OS X systems, can I do it with these 2 partitions? FAT32 or exFAT?

I have two computers in different locations and want to use time machine to keep them both current. Spend about 6 months in each location and got tired of transporting the iMacs. One of the iMacs is a mid 2010, the other is brand new. When I try to restore from the new machine to the old one, it doesn't work. Keeps waiting for a permission.

I'm trying to restore a file that was backed up last August via Time Machine. The file is a Pages document and indicates such when I find it in TM. However when I go to restore it it won't restore. If I double click on the file it just shows a blank document. I also tried to restore it by going directly in with Finder into the Time Capsle drive. Finder indicates it's a broken alias. I noticed a large number of my older back-up files have the same characteristic, not just this one file. However there are some files that look just fine. I've done a Repair using Disk Utility on the Time Capsule and it came back with "no problems".

I had to restore my data from time machine by doing a full migration of all data from my back up drive.
Now that I have recovered my existing system (which did involve a full wipe of HD, internet recovery and an update again from ML to mavericks).
My restored system does not recognise the back up drive as a time machine and it would appear I cannot append any future backups to this TM.
I would have to wipe the disk and start again which I did not particularly want to do.

Today I had the biggest shock of my life, the backup of my iMac is gone from my Time Machine. The hard disk has just been replaced. I had checked before that the backups were there and all was fine. I even recovered a few files from that backup a few days ago. Today the restoring didn't go well, I ran into an error message a few times and tried a few earlier backups. Now I can't see my iMac anymore on Time Machine.
How to get things back? How can I see my iMac again on Time Machine? It would be really bad if I have lost everything.

I'm in the midst of moving from a 2011 imac to a 2014 - I have/had 3 TM backups 1) before the 2011 crashed and was repaired - 2) from the interim 2014 imac that I restored and updated for the new computer and 3) a "carbon copy clone" of my current drive because the apple tech made me wipe the drive and start over and it failed.
My computer will be here next week and I wanted to prepare. However since the restore of the repaired 2011 NO TIME MACHINE will back up on ALL 3 drives the same error happened. It would start fine and say it needed 17-22 hours to "create new" or "inherit" and would start fine and then freeze somewhere around 15-20GB????? I left it more than 6-7 hours and the freeze remained.
Need a TM expert...... this HAS to be a Mavericks OSX issue and I do not want to wipe another drive.
