My macbook in MS word and Pages changes language spelling dictionaries to some unknown langauge (to me), and I am unable to switch back to U.S. English. I have checked the Global/macbook settings and its correctly set for English. But in MS Word, I am not given the choice.

When the Word Spelling & Grammar Checker identifies a word it does not recognise in a Word Document the option to "Add" that word to the Dictionary is not available as an option. (The key is there but the colour subdued and clicking on it has no effect).

i got a problem report pop up from Firefox today, usually it's not an issue but this came up in a strange language, one i had never seen before, every language is sent to English ive checked everything, worried somebody could be accessing my iMac from another location, did the usual net stat, last press & users commands and it hasn't come up with anything untoward, just a little worried about it cos it was really strange.

On rebooting, simplified Chinese has now vanished from the toggle menu, but more alarmingly, Chinese (in all its forms) has vanished as an option for Input Language in System Preferences. Macbook has been rebooted on numerous occasions since but no change.

Apple Mail would recognize the language I would write after typing the first word or two. After a system crash, I can only write in German although the language for Mail is selected as English using Language Switcher. After some time, Mail opens in German again, and the language displayed in Language Switcher is Arabic.
On all my other machines, Mail behaves as ever. Mavericks is being operated in German, Mail in English. Some of the language settings must have been changed.
I got a hand me down ibook from a relative but the default language is in German, I cant understand German. Is it possible to change the language display for commands , instructions and icons to English?

I have added a language under the first tab, Language, only to find that there is no correspondingly supported input option under the fourth tab, Input Sources.
I would now like to remove the entry I added under the first tab, Langauge, but cannot figure out how to do this. I have tried highlighting and pressing delete, dragging it out of the window, etc., but so far nothing works.

Im a new IMAC owner.I'm running Snow Leapord OS. I see when I am typing that if the computer detects a spelling mistake, it underlines the word in red. Is there a way I can change it to the correct spelling or are they just warning me that it is wrong and I have to figure out the correct spelling on my own?

View 5 Replies View RelatedI have Office 2004 for Mac running on OSX10.3.9 on an eMac. In Word, under Tools, the Spelling and Grammar function is gone although when typing, errors are underlined as usual. On other user accounts on the eMac, the Spelling and Grammar function is there under Tools.
What gives/ How can i get it back?
Would trashing a pref file help? If so, which one?
I've just managed to turn on the 'Correct Spelling Automatically' option in Safari (and other Apple apps) by right clicking in a text field and choosing 'Spelling and Grammar -> Correct Spelling Automatically' But one thing that I find myself doing a lot, and would like to correct is problems like typing e.g. PAtrick has a MAc -- holding that shift key just too long. Anybody know if there's auto-correction for this? I know there is in Pages and Word (under prefs) but can't seem to find it for Safari, Mail, TextEdit etc.

View 7 Replies View RelatedI downloaded Maverick OS X 10.9.3 and now I can't open my Microsoft Word documents! The message I receive when trying to open a document read: You can't open the application "Microsoft Word" because PowerPC applications are no longer supported.
I wish I knew this before I upgraded to Maverick. It happened to my iphotos as well but after purchasing new software for iphoto, I have been able to retrieve my photos.
