OS X Mavericks :: How To Recover Old Installation On SSD After Installing Beta OS X On USB Thumb Drive
Jun 17, 2014
I just installed the brand new OS X 10.10 Yosemite beta 2 on a USB thumb drive. It almost works.Â
Now I want to boot my good old OS X 10.9 Mavericks from the SSD.
But there is no option for that, if I reboot the macbook holding the opt key!Â
I see only "Install OS", "Recover 10.9" and "OS X Yosemite", if I plug in the thumb drive.Â
But if I boot the OS X 10.10 beta 2 from the thumb drive, I can browser my SSD "Macintosh HD", see all the folders and files, it's still there!Â
If I choose "Recover 10.9", it says, I can re-install the OS X or recover my Mac from the time machine or ask for online support, what I'm actually doing.Â
How can I make the SSD bootable again, without re-installing the OS X and losing my data? Yes, there is still an option to restore from the time machine, but it's too long, I need my computer now.Â
It's a rMBP 15" early 2013.Â

I'm trying to install ubuntu from a thumb drive. Basically, I'm converting the .iso to an .img, and restore the thumb drive from the .img, trying to make it bootable. I'm following the procedure form the ubuntu website. Drag and Drop a file from Finder to Terminal to 'paste' the full path without typing and risking type errors.
Download the desired file
Open the Terminal (in /Applications/Utilities/ or query Terminal in Spotlight)
Convert the .iso file to .img using the convert option of hdiutil (e.g., hdiutil convert -format UDRW -o ~/path/to/target.img ~/path/to/ubuntu.iso)
Note: OS X tends to put the .dmg ending on the output file automatically.
Run diskutil list to get the current list of devices
Insert your flash media
Run diskutil list again and determine the device node assigned to your flash media (e.g. /dev/disk2)
Run diskutil unmountDisk /dev/diskN (replace N with the disk number from the last command; in the previous example, N would be 2)
Execute sudo dd if=/path/to/downloaded.img of=/dev/rdiskN bs=1m (replace /path/to/downloaded.img with the path where the image file is located; for example, ./ubuntu.img or ./ubuntu.dmg).
Using /dev/rdisk instead of /dev/disk may be faster.
If you see the error dd: Invalid number '1m', you are using GNU dd. Use the same command but replace bs=1m with bs=1M.
If you see the error dd: /dev/diskN: Resource busy, make sure the disk is not in use. Start the 'Disk Utility.app' and unmount (don't eject) the drive.
Run diskutil eject/dev/diskN and remove your flash media when the command completes
Restart your Mac and press alt while the Mac is restarting to choose the USB-Stick
Everything goes through fine, except, when I restart my mac to see the boot options. All I see is Macintosh HD

I have an Aluminum MacBook, is it possible to install Windows with boot camp from a thumb drive? I have access to the ISOs I need (from MSDNAA), but I ran out of CDR/DVDRs. Ideally I would extract the ISO onto the thumb drive and have it behave the same as if it was a CD, is it that simple or is there something else I will need to do?

I've got this older iMac but it has 2 GB and few weeks ago I managed to install Lion on a second partition of the internal HD. Sometimes the computer would hang or cause problems and I decided to install the whole system from scratch. After several failed attemps I finally figured, that the internal HD had a defect. So I decided to use an external usb drive to fix that problem for the beginning and before I think about changing the internal hard drive. I created 3 partitions with a GUID-table on the external usb drive and managed to install Leopard on the first partition and so far it's working fine and I boot from that external usb drive.Â
Now I wanted to install Lion on that computer. So I took that Lion thumb stick I purchased from apple and pressed the option key during boot in order to select booting from the thumb stick. It worked for the beginning and a message like "Installation" appeared. After a while the installation would stop with a message like "an error occured during installation, please try again". I did this two times but it never finished the installation.

I have recently picked up a very inexpensive 1gig thumb drive (yes, they are practically giving them away anymore). It came with some proprietary software for downloading and installing apps, but it only functions on a PC. I'm looking for suggestions on apps that people may use or have used on thumb drives that can be very useful in day to day life, and I'm working off of several OS's. (Mac OSX, Windows XP, and Ubuntu Dapper Drake.) I was also thinking about installing DSL on the thumb drive.

I have an external USB HDD that was originally formatted as Mac OS Extended (journaled), it was accidentally erased (using Disk utility) and re-formatted to FAT32. the HDD has not been used since (other than to try and recover the data using various tools), so no new data was been written to it.Â
Any methods that could be used to recover the data from the drive?i've tried DiskWarrior but that can't do anything with the drive as it's not a "macintosh disk".

I currently have the Win 7 Beta installed on a dedicated internal hard drive (in my Mac Pro). I originally installed it using Bootcamp, then later bought VMware Fusion 2.0 so I could hot swap between OS X and Win 7. Fusion detected my original Bootcamp installation; I didn't do any reinstallation of the Beta.
I upgraded to Snow Leopard last week.
I'd like to install the Release Candidate. I realize it requires a clean install (I don't want to mess with using the terminal workaround I've heard about for installing over the Beta). What's the best way to do this? Should I simply run the Snow Leopard version of Bootcamp and have it do a new install? Do I have to wipe and reformat the Win drive, or will Bootcamp take me through that automatically.

I get the following error message after installing the Messages Beta. I've since unistalled Messages and updated 10.7.4 hoping this would resolve the issue. It appears that some of the 10.8 security features(Gatekeeper)have been installed on my computer, but my system preferences application was not updated to allow me to change the Mac App store security settingsI do not have a current time machine backup to roll back the OS.

I wanted to put something on thumb drive to transfer over to my other mac but it was too big for it so I made space by transferring some of the files on to my mac. I ended up emptying out my thumb drive to make room. So I had to delete the files on my thumb drive once I moved the files to my mac since moving them basically just makes copies. However, my empty thumb drive still reads as if nothing was ever removed. I have a empty 4GB thumb drive that says I only have 1 plus GB left?

I have 2 thumb drives. I believe one if formatted Fat32 and the other specifically for the mac. When I delete files from them the available space does not increase, the only way to get the memory back is to format them. If I check the info it still shows space used after I delete every file, and not a little used space it shows the amount of space before I delete anything. How to fix this without reformatting whenever I need more space?

I just erased everything off my Mac Pro and reconfigured everything (as new). I installed all my programs, primarily Aperture3 and Photoshop CS5 (using Leopard). I had no problem uploaded some photos into Aperture3 from a thumb drive using the USB port, but when I tried to upload photos from my card reader the MacPro does not recognize the card reader using the same USB port. I figured the problem was a bad card reader.
I tested it on my PC and it recognized the card reader and uploaded all the photos. Also, the card reader's green light turns on when attached to the MacPro, as if it is working and connected but it does not register in Finder or desktop to indicate that the card reader is installed. I even tried to upload directly from my Canon 7D and it also did NOT recognize the camera. Why would the MacPro recognize the thumb drive on the same USB port and not the card reader or the camera?
