OS X Mavericks :: Backing Up Remote FAT Drive

Jun 5, 2014

I want to back up the essential files of my office machine (windows 7)  to my home mahcine. I have a VPN and have it working fine. I have linked to the remote drive (FAT) containing my documemnts and can access tnem fine

I was planning to use time machine but learned i broke two golden rules

a)  Its a FAT based drive that I want to backup
b)  It is a remote drive and Time Machine can only handle physically connected drives

I guess I could script top copy the documents to a local drive and then use Time Machine. Any software that woudl avoid the new to copy 5 gig of data ?Mac Pro, OS X Mavericks (10.9.3)

OS X Mavericks :: Backing Up External Drive To Another External Drive?

Sep 8, 2014

I have recently bought a MacBook Pro (10.9.4) with a 128 Gb solid state drive. My intended backup strategy is to have all my documents on an external 1 Tb USB3 drive (i.e, not in the MacBook Pro)  and to back up that drive AND my Macbook (system, applications, mail etc) to another, powered 2Tb drive. I’m assuming I’ll have to partition the 2Tb drive first, by the way.

OS X Mavericks :: Backing Up Email From Mac Mail

Jun 21, 2014

I'm running 10.9.3 and use Mac Mail to connect to an Exchange email account (Office 365). I want to back up all my mail and have been playing with the Export Mailbox feature. I have a few questions: Is there any way to back up more than one folder at a time?My Archive folder is quite big (35k messages). When I backed this up, it created 2 folders (Archive.mbox and Archive 2.mbox). The mbox file in mbox 2 is much larger (5.48GB vs 173KB).Is it normal that it would create to folders? Will this cause me any issues when doing a restore?I also backed up my Inbox and Sent Items and both were created in just one folder each. Are there any recommended tools for automatically backing up Mac Mail or is my best bet to do this manually?I'd love to find a cloud based tool where I can archive all my email and keep it secure and searchable in the cloud.

OS X Mavericks :: Remote Login Not Working

Jun 19, 2014

I'm attempting to log in to my MacBook remotely using ssh, and it isn't working. I've looked all over the internet for a solution, and I haven't found one, although iI think I've determined that other people are having this same problem after upgrading to Mavericks. I did recently upgrade this MacBook to Mavericks, but I never tried remotely logging in prior to upgrading, so I don't know if Mavericks is the problem in my case.

I'm using a mid-2010 13-inch MacBook, which I've recently upgraded to OS 10.9.3. I have not set up a static IP address with my ISP. My firewall is currently disabled. I've gone to System Preferences -> Sharing, checked "Remote Login," and selected "Allow Access" for "All users". I then note the IP address listed, where it says "To log in to this computer remotely, type "ssh myusername@1.2.3.4" (obviously, I made up that user name and IP address).

If I then open up a terminal window on my local machine and type "ssh myusername@1.2.3.4", I am indeed able to log in using my password. However, if I ssh out to a remote machine somewhere else, and then attempt to ssh back in again, it doesn't work. Specifically, I am prompted for a password, but when I type the correct password, I'm just prompted for a password again. So I type the correct password again. But then, without even so much as an "incorrect password" message, I'm booted right out for excessive failed login attempts.

I notice that each time I check the "Remote Login" check box, which I believe starts the sshd daemon, that action generates four error messages in /var/log/system.log, all of which have this form:

Jun 19 16:56:49 mymacname.local mDNSResponder[40]: mDNS_Register_internal: ERROR!! Tried to register AuthRecord [this part varies] that's already in the list

Open the General pane of Security & Privacy preferencesClick the lock icon to unlock it, then type an administrator name and password.

Click Advanced.Select “Disable remote control infrared receiver” to turn off IR reception, or deselect it to turn on IR reception.

But when I follow the instructions and go to "Advanced" this is what appears:There is no “Disable remote control infrared receiver” to select. How then can I disable the IR?

OS X Mavericks :: Why Doesn't Remote Desktop Work On 10.9.3

Jun 17, 2014

I'm trying to connect to a small (10) local network of imacs all running Mavericks 10.9.3. I'm using Remote Desktop over Bonjour and also trying to share an iTunes library using Home sharing. None of the computers will respond. I get an error (-3170) on the target computers for the home sharing and RD tells me they're all sleeping when I can see perfectly well that they are awake and logged in. They all have RD client 3.7.1 installed but the response I get from RD when I try to wake them is 'this is not supported on these computers'.

This system worked wonderfully well under 10.6.8 and now it's completely screwed with Mavericks. as all the computers respond readily via the 'Go/connect to server/browse/connect method'. They are obviously all connected it's just this new OS just doesn't work.

OS X :: Backing Up For A New Internal Hard Drive?

Mar 13, 2010

I have a 13" Macbook Pro with only 160GB of internal hard-drive space. I have an external hard-drive that backs everything up, but before I work on getting a better hard-drive for inside my MacBook Pro, I want to make sure of a couple things:

1. When I start up my MacBook Pro after the "procedure" it will put everything back to exactly how it is, right? Like, to the point where it doesn't seem like there is a new hard-drive in it?

2. Will my iTunes account remain the exact same? I don't lose all of my music, do I?

3. About how long will it take to reinstall everything?

OS X Mavericks :: Can Wake MacBook Pro From Sleep With Remote App On IPhone

Jun 27, 2014

I can't access my Macbook Pro remotely, specially after several hours of inactivity,, whenever I try to access content of my library through the remote app or the Apple TV I'm unable to wake my Macbook Pro up.

My Macbook Pro is 2012 model (the last with de CD Drive) and it's running the Maverick OS, my questions are:

* I'm unable to find the "Unable Power Nap while plugged" option on the energy saver tab... is that because the model of my laptop doesn't support that?

* In order to access content from my library remotely, should the "Computer Sleep" option on the energy saver be on "Never" instead of the "1 hour" that I'm currently using... or is there a way to still be able to wake up the laptop with those settings

OS X :: Backing Up Flash Drive With Time Machine?

Dec 10, 2007

Can Time Machine backup flash drives? So every time I plug it in, it backs up anything that has changed.

Just to be clear, I'm not trying to save the backups onto the flash drive, which is what a lot of people seem to want to do, but rather to backup the contents of the flash drive onto my mac.

Currently I have an automator script on the flash drive which, when I run it, copies everything into an archive on my mac. But this isn't a very ideal solution, since it copies everything even if it hasn't changed.

OS X :: Backing Up Data For A New Hard Drive Installation?

Feb 11, 2010

I've been looking into this a lot the passed few days, but there are a few answers I just can't find.

First of all, I know how to physically take apart my mac and put the new hard drive in. I have the new hard drive, and the tools I need.

The method I chose (before I looked into how to xfer data using macs) was to use time machine to make a backup of my entire hard drive on an external, which I did successfully.

However, before I take apart my mac and instal the new hard drive, there are a few things I want to be clear on, and I can't find the answers to.

Will I need the leopard OS disc for the new hard drive? Or does time capsule back up the OS as well, and give me some sort of prompt (doubtful)?

I have the pre late 2008 macbook pro, and it came with leopard. I haven't upgraded for several reasons I won't get into. My question now is, should I have the leopard OS disc? SHouldn't something like that have come with my mac? I ask because I feel like I should have one, but I don't remember getting one and can't find it anywhere. I always keep things like that.

And lastly, if I don't have the leopard OS disc, what do you think is the cheapest way for me to back up and xfer my data?

I have external hard drives, my new hard drive, and my old hard drive. Would it be cheaper for me to buy one of those things that directly xfers the data from one internal drive to another, or to buy another leopard disc? Is there a way I can just order the leopard disc I should have already for cheaper?

MacBook Pro :: Backing Up Time Machine Drive?

Mar 31, 2012

It's not paranoia, it's just being a computer user long enough to see damaged drives. I'd like to backup my Time machine drive, but I can't. Neither using my backup software, Chronosync, nor simply manually, just drag and drop from the origin Tima machine to the destination (time machine backup). Time machine is a backup, so I'm doing a backup of a backup. I had my time machine drive failing once, so I want to have this extra protecion.

This is the error message I get when I want to drag and drop the "Backups.backupdb"  folder, which is where all my Tima machine bbackups are:

"The backup can’t be copied because the backup volume doesn’t have ownership enabled." I'm the only user, in Admin level. When I get info from the folder it says "You can only read".

OS X Mavericks :: Excessive Unauthorized Remote Access Attempts On IMac

Sep 5, 2014

This morning and throughout the day this is how my console looked:

My machine became unresponsive at times up to the point that I had to hard-restart it twice. Before today I hadn't noticed any weird activity like this, I looked up some of the ip addresses that appeared there and all of them were marked as malicious ip's.

Is there anything I can do to prevent this other than shutting down the vnc access? Is logmein a better/safer option? I need to connect to my machine remotely almost on a daily basis.

Why this started happening to my machine all of the sudden? is not like I keep highly classified info on that computer, is a common occurrence and I shouldn't worry? All the attempts are failed, but it got to a point where I'm getting more than one per second, so I guess that's what caused my machine to crash.

OS X :: Backing Up Previous System Folders To External Drive

Aug 6, 2010

I am near the end of an extensive editing project in FCS 2 and I am having problems with the system hanging up constantly. I have 8gb of ram (the max for my machine) and my main internal drive is a 250 gb HD. I'm wondering if I can backup & delete files from my main drive to free up space and hopefully improve performance, and if it will cause any problems.

I plan to backup the Soundtrack Pro Loops to an external drive, which will free up about 21gb of space. Is there anything else that's safe to do this with (if this process is safe, that is.)? Can I also backup the "Previous systems" folder & delete it from my main drive?

Software :: Cloning Hard Disk - Backing Up 500 GB Drive

Mar 1, 2010

I have a 250 GB disk in my MacBook Pro, and I would like to buy a bigger one (500 GB, probably). In my previous experience from the Windows environment, there was an application called Norton Ghost, in which you could easily clone the disk, and when the cloned one was inserted into your PC, the OS could not tell the difference. Is there something similar for the Mac OS X, so that I can replicate my hard drive and thus install the new one in my Macbook without any hassle? I know that Time Machine is a possibility, but after restoring my system through TM once, I found out that after the restore there were some minor additional steps that had to be taken; however, the cloning technique means that you plug your disk and you are ready to go, so this is what I am looking for. I have one more additional question: I currently use a 500 GB external firewire disk for Time Machine. Will its size be sufficient for backing up the new 500 GB drive?

MacBook Pro :: Backing Up All Files To An External Hard Drive

Apr 11, 2012

I recently converted over to a Macbook Pro from PC and had all of my PC data saved to an external Hard Drive.  I can retreive the data fine, but I can't save anything to the Hard Drive.  I have plenty of room on my Macbook, but old habits are hard to break and I like to back everything up at least once a week.

I do not want to reformat my External Hard drive as there is ALOT of information on there that would be lost. So, how can I copy things over there, or drag them over to the External?  When I try, it gives me the circle with the line through it.

And if you have time, tell me about Time Machine.  I am interested, but it seems like alot of work, because I would have to copy everything off the hard drive, let Time Machine reformat it, and then copy it back.  Seems VERY time consuming.

External hard drive is 2TB and has approximately 90GB on it.

Final Cut Pro X :: 10.1.3 - Backing Up Project To External Thunderbolt Drive

Aug 25, 2014

I used SuperDuper to back up a project to an external Thunderbolt drive. The files are all there on the external drive but the references are still directed to the original drive (an external USB 3.0 drive).

I tried changing the locations of all files and then consolidating, but it still references the original drive. If I eject that original drive and just start FCPx from the copy on the Thunderbolt drive I just get a lot of "missing file" red flags.

How can I fix this?  I would like to avoid doing a "duplicate project" every time as the project is over a terrabyte and it takes a long time to copy. SuperDuper only copies the files that have changed.
