OS X Mavericks :: 2009 IMac 10.9.5 Stuck At Apple Icon
Dec 2, 2014
I haven't had too many issues with MAVERICKS but have been hesitant to install Yosemite onto my Late 2009 i7 2009 27" iMac. Five days ago, when my iMac woke from sleep, I noticed an "erratic" image across the sign-in screen. I did a hard shut down and when I re-booted, the screen froze at the apple icon. I used Time Machine to restore my system which worked successfully This morning, when I woke my iMac, same dreaded frozen apple icon but three attempts to do a system restore with Time Machine failed.

New iMac is stuck on grey apple screen after startup. It is a 3.4GHz Quad-core Intel Core i5 running OS 10.9.4. The problem occurred after a migration from my older 2009 iMac which is running Snow Leopard 10.6.6. When the restart occurred from Migration Assistant, the new computer will not boot up to the login screen. Disk utility did not solve problem.

I was switching between Blue and Graphite and now I think my apple icon in the menu bar is stuck in graphite. Though I'm not sure if that was just the way it always was. Everything else seems to be in the blue theme. Here is a screen shot of the specific area...
I have restarted my computer and everything. I'm running Mac OS 10.6.4. My menu bar is currently set to translucent but it seems to be just darker when it isn't anyway.

I was transferring applications to my new computer, and when it finished, the icons didn't change. They still look like they're still transferring, yet the apps work fine (The stack of papers, the "Applications" icon in the lower right, and a white circle and cross over it).URL....

Upon initial restart after installation, the grey screen with the Apple icon comes up and gets stuck there. I have tried to power down and get to disk utility to try repairing permisions but it always goes to the log on screen not the recovery mode. All user ID's get a pop up that says 'you are unableto log in to the user account'x' at this time. Logging in to the account failed because an error occurred. The spinning wheel spinns by the PW the whole time the error box is up but goes away when you click OK. It also knows if you put in an incorrect PW or not Have mac mini server 10.7 and an airport extreme the net was really slow at first on other nodes so I had to move to the guest net I cannot logon to the aitport cause it is single sinon enabled Worked yesterday not today after sleeping I can log onto my Wiki page with users though?

I have a Macbook Pro 13 from the summer of 2009. After Christmas I decided to upgrade my hard drive and memory. This is what I got. [URL] For about a week everything seemed to work perfectly. I then began to have problems almost every day (finder crashing, etc). I reinstalled OSX probably 5 times using my previous account until finally did a clean wipe and reinstalled OSX again. It now seems to be working for the most part, but booting takes about two minutes. It gets stuck on the grey screen with the Apple logo with the turning gear for a couple of minutes before it boots. Normally it wouldn't bother me too much, but after the problems I was having before, I really wanted to make sure that there was no problem with my new hard drive or memory. After doing the usual suggestions for slow boot time (resetting PRAM, disconnecting external devices, repairing disk permissions, etc.) nothing changed. I booted into verbose mode and it seems to hang up for awhile before listing
disk0s2 i/o error
It does this twice before booting, hanging up for about a minute before giving the error. I am not sure if i should return it under warranty because I am not sure its broken. Like I said, it seems perfectly fine right now with the exception of the boot time. Using the Apple Hardware Check, even the extended check, didn't give any errors. The SMART status for the hard drive is verified. Is this clearly a hard drive issue, or could it be something else? Has anyone else had a similar problem?

I installed Mavericks and it restarted and now it is stuck on the apple screen. I've tried to reinstall and it gets to the same point. I should've have back up my Hd but did not do this. Is there any way to access my drive and save the files?

Completed a clean install of Lion on 2009 IMac, which initially reacted poorly to an upgrade (my first attempt to move to Lion). How do I reinstall iPhoto, Garageband, Aperture, Final Cut Express, iMovie, Logic Express? These were all preinstalled with original purchase. How would I find the serial numbers that will inevitably be asked for? The App store wants to charge for these items, and other non-Apple software I've purchased for the App store won't download again.

I'm new to the forum. I've tried searching out the answer to this question, but couldn't find any recent postings.
I've just received a new 2009 3.06ghz Intel iMac Core Duo 1TB ATI Radeon computer. My internet connection is dial-up (not Ethernet or WiFi). I just discovered there's no phone connection on the new iMac, and that I need a USB modem.
The computer booklet recommends the Apple External USB Modem. I found this one on Amazon:
[URL]
But the customer reviews suggest it may not be truly compatible with Intel machines. It may cause system freezes. I found a thread on this forum that mentioned the problem may have to do with using an unpowered USB hub. I won't be using the keyboard or any hub. The USB modem will be plugged directly into the back of my iMac.
Does anyone know if this will work, or if not, is there another USB modem that will?

I own a 17" iMac Core 2 Duo. It has been crashing more and more lately. Now when I turn it on, it sits at the apple logo. The spinner does not appear. I tried new sticks of ram, and same thing. I can boot off a windows or Linux cd with the c key, but they freeze halfway through bootup. I ran a hard disk check also.

About 5 months ago I had my Mid 2006 iMac replaced with an Early 2009 iMac and on the whole I am very pleased with it except for one thing ... the glossy display. As our youngest has now commandeered my office I am now resigned to using the dining room which is fine except the only area for all my equipment is the wall opposite the window. The reflection during the afternoon and early evening when the sun comes through is driving me crazy. We have had blinds fitted which now help but still cast a lot of reflections and glare on the screen making reading difficult. I didn?t have this problem with the old matte iMac.An option would be to use a matte screen as a second monitor or even better a 30" Apple Cinema Display thus I can move the iMac out of the way.

Recently, I got an email from apple about finally being able to download Yosemite beta. I happily did so, and it was working fine, but my dad wasn't happy. I did this with his permission, but he couldn't get iPhoto to work, and was extremely annoyed at the Yosemite beta, so he tried to fix the problem himself. He somehow loaded all the data up into a time machine file on a hard drive, and then booted our mac in disk utility mode, and recoveried drived it and stuff, which in end, he used to downgrade Yosemite to Mavericks. What he didn't realise was that Yosemite and other OS X versions weren't designed to be downgraded, and in fact don't support it. Well, our computers running Mavericks now, and it is going fine apart from one major hitch. Currently, we are able to login (using our designated passwords) however, once logged in, our passwords don't work. This means nothing can be installed or uninstalled or anything etc.
For example, once logged in, we cannot edit settings, as when this pops up, our passwords just get denied when we try and enter them:
Our passwords when we login are the same, but it is almost like nobody is administrator. However, we clearly are administrator as labeled in the settings tab...
I have tried to reinstall Yosemite however, I need a password to do so.

I've got a problematic iMac running mavericks. I tried to do a disk repair in Recovery Mode which didn't work (said it needed a disk repair but could not repair and that I should backup everything). So then I tried to quit out of recovery and restart by choosing the Mac OS HD...it won't restart...it just keeps giving me the Recovery options front page. What should I do?

My 3-month old iMac was responding very slowly when I used the latest version of Safari. So I forced quit the program. From then on, whenever I turned on the iMac, it would get stuck at the Apple logo start up screen. I had to unplug the power since the machine is getting very hot after 15 mins.

i need some help regarding my iMac. I was busy installing combo update 10.5.8 on my iMac when the power in the entire house went down due to the snow. When I started my iMac back up it got stuck on the apple logo with the spinning wheel below it. I can leave it there for as long as i like nothing happens. I had the idea to reboot using the CD's i got with the iMac but there is already a disc in the discloader so i can't put the reboot CD's in. anybody know how i can get my iMac to work again? There aren't any files on the computer that i neccesarely need but if i would be able to save my photo's etc. it would be great.

Mid 2009 MBP here. Original disk was failing so I replaced it with a Seagate Momentus XT and Lion refused to install. Formatted the drive correctly and made sure it was GUID partition. Even went as far as removing a memory module because I had heard that having more than 2 Gigs could cause issues during installation. Also made sure that the drive had the latest firmware.
Flash forward and I returned the drive and got a Western Digital Scorpio Black and have the same problem: Stuck at 21 minutes.
Currently installing with a 10.7.3 USB drive. I've tried numerous times with a 10.7.0 disk as well as the original Snow Leopard restore discs that came with the machine. Is the mid 2009 just incompatible with these drives?

I have this icon behind the Application icon on the dock and I cannot figure out what it is. It is not something on the desktop as I have moved the dock and can't see it, so it is definitely connected with the Application icon. I have deleted all downloads which could have been half done and I have removed an Alias I had in the Application folder. Now all the Applications appears as "Applications" in the "Kind" column when viewing in Finder.

This situation began when I put my Imac on sleep. After, the screen turned on in black whit the cursor but I couldn't do anything.
Then to rebooted the machine, the apple logo and sound began fine but the screen turned off, so moving the mouse the screen turned on in black with cursor.
I'd tried many ways, resetting the PRAM, SMC, repairing the disk and permission, analyzing hardware, repairing fsck files.
Suddenly, when I entered in Verbose mode, mi imac brought into user choose screen and worked fine, but when I shut down and tried to start my mac in the next day, it didn´t work again.

I just got a macbook pro. I installed some apps. I opened the applications folder from the dock and I attempted to drag the icon to the dock to create a shortcut there. My finger came off the track pad and the icon snapped over to the far upper left corner of the desktop. It's in the corner under the apple symbol on the menu bar. It's a transparent white square with a question mark in it. If I clicked on it it would open the app it's linked to. But I can't move it or delete it. If I right click a small window comes up showing the path to the app momentarily. I tried uninstalling the app and rebooting no luck. Looking in the desktop folder shows nothing. It looks stupid and it blocks the x-out of any app that is open full size.

When iCal is closed (meaning I've quit the app), the date on the iCal dock icon is "Feb 21". When I open iCal, it changes to Feb 23. When I quit again, it goes back to Feb 21. I'm pretty sure that iCal is supposed to show the correct date regardless of whether it's opened or not. Can anyone confirm this for me? Isn't the stock icon date for iCal 'July 17'?
