OS X :: MacPro Network Name Keeps Getting Renamed?
Apr 27, 2010
First My Home Network:
Airport Extreme N, current model, separate discrete g and n networks. G network is set up in WDS mode to extend Airport Express which is connected to a MP via Ethernet. My other Macs are 100% wireless.
The problem:
The network name of my MP is randomly changed. The original name was simply "MacPro." Then it started to change it's name to MacPro (1), MacPro (2), etc., thinking there was already a computer with the same name in use when it was the same computer all along.
The message I get looks like this:
I only have this problem on my MP, which again, is connected to an Airport Express via Ethernet. This problem doesn't exist on my machines that have an Airport card installed.
Anyone know what is causing this, and more importantly, how to stop it?

1) Can I take my secondary drive in my Powermac G5 and install it into my forthcoming Mac Pro ? Or is the SATA interface different on the new machines.
2) Ordering extra memory from Crucial to save $, what's the situation with 'fans' and things on the memory. I'm confused, totally. Does the mac pro's require additional heat cooling on the memory, does the memory from crucial come with this, is it easy to install like the powermac or am I going to be left floundering like a fish out of water....

The name of the Macintosh HD has somehow been changed to a tiny little circle with an "x" it. I think this may have been done accidentally, but I also would like to eliminate the possibility that it indicates some sort of problem. Of course I know how to highlight the icon and select the naming area and just rename it, bit does anyone know if the little circle with the "x" means anything other than someone just accidentally renamed the Macintosh HD somehow?

I have just recently decided to take the photos from my MacBook to my father's Dell to backup my files. However, most of the folders have slashes like this - "/", and windows will not accept these, so I had to rename every single folder (hundreds). What I did was just type in something random. Anyways, the pictures in my iPhoto Library show up for a split second and then they turn to white perforated boxes with exclamation marks because the source of the image obviously cannot be found.

Not including the sticky scrolling bottom problem on the Apple Mouse, is the Magic Mouse worth the extra money? Is it worth buying a mouse from Apple at all in the first place or should I buy one from Logitech? I'm just asking because I've heard people complaining that mice from Apple are uncomfortable to hold and not very easy to use and they rather go with Logitech.

Renaming my hard drive caused Time Machine to make a new 190 GB backup. How can I delete this single backup to get the space back and still keep the previous and following backups? I tried deleting the single backup for whole hard drive in the Time Machine UI, but I didn't get any the space back, the next newest backup is now 190 GB using Time Tracker as seen below. Just tried deleting all the backups of the renamed hard drive from 3 Oct and now the first backup of today is 191 GB.

I accidentally renamed the home directory on my macbook! its a mid 2007 model running 10.4.11 Tiger and I don't normally restart or log off my computer. I accidentally changed it the other day with a track pad misclick while I was multitabling on pokerstars and went back and changed it back later once I realized what I had done. I didn't think it was that severe of an issue until I started experiencing problems with apps.
I have found the folder with all the old stuff in the users file but I don't know how to apply all the old settings to my account. ALL my applications have restarted and my itunes is completely wiped. All the music files are on the computer but every time I log off all apps are again reset. How do I get everything back to normal?

My hard drive has mysteriously renamed itself DB1973 Currently Being ModeratedMar 10, 2009 3:27 AM The hard drive item that sits permanently on my desktop has been renamed to 'pe. I noticed this yesterday evening, after I'd downloaded some software updates and tried to back up my files using Time Machine. An image file that was saved on my desktop has also changed its name, from "Peter and Laura caricature" to "-09§". However, the name of a movie file saved on my desktop has remained the same, so whatever has caused these file names to change hasn't affected everything on my desktop (I only had three items there - the hard drive, the image and the movie). Is this something I need to be concerned about? Does it signal some sort of corruption or virus? No-one else uses my machine.

Before I realized that I should not rename or delete anything in my Iphoto folder, I had already renamed and deleted a bunch of stuff out of it. Now I can't access any of the pics in Iphoto. Is there any way to go back and undo everything? How can I get those photos back into Iphoto?

I renamed a Mailbox, trying to rationalize my boxes. The mailbox contained six other mailboxes, some of which have sub-mailboxes. i.e. three levels. A new (blue) folder appeared with the right name but nothing it. No folders, no email. I suppose the actual individual emails have lost their addresses or something. I went into a separate hard drive back up, into my User Library, and made a copy of the correct mailbox which has the email in it. I dragged it into Mail (I think?!) but it is uncoloured and although it has the nested mailboxes in it, there no email in any of them. How can I restore the email? I tried dragging the individual email but Mail wouldn't register it at all. I am very nervous about losing this email because it represents a vital part of the last four years of my research and I use it every day.

The 8800GT in my Mac Pro 1,1 just died. I'm back up with the 7300 for now.
Can I adapt the EVGA's GeForce GTX 285 Mac Edition for use? It comes with the cables, and I more than willing to pay the extra $$$ to save myself hunting around for parts.
I'm also a bit confused about the 4870 upgrade. Does the Apple version work out of the box on my 1,1? If so, maybe that's the way to go for now?

I'm putting together a workstation that primarily is going to be used for Windows development and I wanted to have as fast a disk subsystem as possible.
It doesn't seem to be BootCamp drivers available for the card that Apple sells, so I found this card instead:
[URL]
It has EFI firmware and is able to boot MacOSX from raid arrays. The only question is if it is able to boot stuff through Bios emulation.
Vista x64 is the primary target here, and SP1 actually has EFI booting support, so it might be possible to use this. However when I tried to install Vista x64 with SP1 integrated on the MacBook Air I wasn't even able to boot installer DVD because of EFI incompatibilities.
Anyone have any experiences with booting BootCamp on a MacPro with a raid card?

I am a student who is currently starting to work on some at home projects with cartoon animation (Toon Boom) and Video Editing (Final Cut/After Effects). I have a Dual 2.0 G5 with 1G Ram. Would there be a significant advantage in upgrading to a Dual 2.8 Mac Pro? I could probably get 700-800 dollars for the current computer so, would dropping 2000 on a new tower give me a huge boost in performance? (Money is kind of an issue but not if the difference is staggering.) Or should I just upgrade the RAM on my current tower, be happy with what I have and quit jabbering?

ok Im pondering buying a mac pro once they release the updates and I am wondering if I can take a 3.5" SATA drive out of my current desktop running XP and transplant it into the mac pro then use it with either VMware or bootcamp. So will this work or will I have to partition my hard drive and buy another copy of XP?

With Snow Leopard on the horizon, and there already being some 64bit operating systems out there which are a hassle to get working with the "woodcrest" MacPro machines, eg, W7 x64 is a no go, and I have read that it is a PITA to get Vista x64 going(and a waste of time anyway). It has gotten me thinking, will Snow Leopard work in true 64bit form in the machine that was advertised as a 64bit Pro workstation?I am eager too see how much of a difference Grand Central and Open CL make!

I'd like to change my system drive on my Mac Pro to the Intel X25-m 160 gig I just purchased. When I previously upgraded my laptop to SSD, I used carbon copy cloner to clone the internal drive onto the SSD.Unfortunately, I had a couple of authorization issues, one of which being for CS3. Somehow cloning the internal drive onto the SSD and replacing the internal drive with the SSD tripped up the authorizations.
On my Mac Pro I have a few more programs I'm worried about having to reauthorize if the same thing happens. All programs are legal installs, so I could reauthorize, but it is a headache. Especially since some of the companies only allow a certain number of installations and having changed laptops and desktops since purchasing the apps means that some of these programs will require the lengthy process of emailing and explaining the situation to the manufacturer.Given that I'm just trying to change the startup drive, how can I avoid these issues?

Would like to run WinXP pro on an SSD drive on a 8 core 3Ghz Mac pro.
Tried initially placing this drive on one of the two xtra SATA ports and mounting it where the extra CD drive goes, then discovered that Windows won't recognize and would need drivers/hacking etc.
Have decided to put it in regular bay 4 and use bootcamp. Do I need to install any special drivers to maximize the ability of Windows to access this drive?

So, will keeping the memory in there mess up the system?

He's suggested swapping the HD's over but I dont think that will work due to the PowerPC and Intel software differences... right? If that wont work then how can we do it as painless as possible?
