OS X :: Internet Security On Mac Leopard?

Jun 13, 2009

I have just bought my first Macbook and am enjoying the experience but am slightly nervous as I am used to using a PC and getting bombarded by email about viruses, trojans, spyware, malware etc and having to purchase and continually update my security. Now here I am on a Mac with apparently no security to speak of other than the firewall in my Netgear router...... I have heard some say "Macs don't get viruses!!! or Malware". Can someone who is a true Mac expert give me some decent advise? I am happy to buy McAfee or Norton but which is best.

OS X :: Security On Mac Laptop (Software)?

Dec 15, 2010

So, recommendations on securing your Mac? I mean in terms of software. Filevault is an obvious one, as well as making sure you use strong passwords. A bit beyond this is setting a firmware password, to prevent changing the boot drive without the password. How about tracking stolen macs? Anything I can there?

OS X Mavericks :: Setups For Security

Jun 4, 2014

these options in the Security Preferences screen.

Firewall. Does the average person need this activated?

Firevault. Is this necessary for all?

I don't have the Missing Manual for Mavericks yet. So I often look up topics in the MM for Lion. He mentions something on page 510 about "closing the backdoor" so hackers can't 'Ping" an idle or sleeping computer. The Security Preferences in Mavericks don't seem to address this. Has the new OS got built-in security for this. Wiping an HD clean, installing fresh OS and then restoring preferences from a TImeMachine backup.

I keep getting the error message There was an error joining the Airport network "XXXXXX". My MacBook and all our other pc laptops connect with no problem. I don't have an Ethernet card working. The card went out and I would have had to replace the whole Motherboard, so we had an airport installed. It's worked great for 4 years now.

OS X :: Screen And File Sharing Security?

Nov 4, 2010

I've been using my MacMini as a server to backup and sync several Macs on my local LAN but recently I found the need to access certain files outside my LAN. That said, I set my router to forward ports 548, 9, and 5900 (file sharing, WOL, and screen sharing, respectively) to my MacMini. This has actually worked rather well for me -- other than WOL. So in an attempt to diagnose the WOL issue I started probing my router's incoming logs (to see if I can successfully send a WOL magic packet from outside my network) and thats when I noticed a few random IPs probing port 5900. So my question is, what are some security measures that I can take in order to prevent someone form accessing my MacMini from the open ports? In theory couldn't a simple program attempt to repeatedly connect to a port and brute force a password? Excuse my naivety with networking, but I'm a little concerned. I did some searching but I couldn't find anything substantial on the forums.

OS X :: 128 Bit Disk Image Encryption Security?

Apr 21, 2006

This is mainly just one of those 'I always wondered' things. How secure really is the 128-bit encryption offered in Disk Utility? Is it virtually impossible to crack? Somewhat difficult? How long would it take someone who really knew what they were doing? If anybody wants to try, I made a sample encrypted disk image. See if you can get into it. Its 2MB and you can download it here. After downloading, you'll have to take the .txt off the end of the filename so its just challenge.sparseimage.

Hardware :: How To Get Security Of Mirroring Hdd Data

Jan 3, 2009

Mirroring basically creates a mirror image of any data on a drive as it's created (on the physically seperate mirrored drive)...the idea being that if the drive get's corrupted you will always have the mirrorred copy as a backup...

But what happens if it's not the actual drive that gets corrupted, but rather some of the data on the drive...then you would basically have a corrupted copy of the data on both the primary drive and the mirrored drive, correct?

OS X :: IMac Security From Neighbors Wireless

May 30, 2009

I have done many searches and my questions have not been answered to my satisfaction. I'm sure it is because I don't understand it all yet.

Question 1, My neighbor is a real d*&k and has wireless set up, according to him he can pick up any computer a long ways away. My new iMac (2 wks old) can he hack it even if I don't have any wireless set up on it yet?

Question 2, I have Airport Express to use only for my speakers and possibly a wireless printer down the road. The Airport Express will be used in one room only and it is the room directly across from the the room he has his station set up in (approximately 16'). If I hook the Express up, how do I stop him from hacking my system via his wireless base station to access my iMac?I know I am a little paranoid, but I just don't trust this guy at all. I know search is my friend and I have tried to us it, but I guess I'm not smart enough about wireless to feel comfortable. So thank you in advance for your knowledge on the subject.
