OS X :: Mac Does Not Find 10.5.7 And Safari 4 Update
Jun 10, 2009
I have a problem when trying to update through Software Update. My Mac does not find the 10.5.7 update. And not the new Safari 4. I have tried to manually install these, but then it says its not possible to install on this volume. There is space and the computer is only 1,5 year old.

I shut my macbook pro down the other day and when I turned it on the next day, I couldn't get on Safari. It would constantly say that it couldn't find an internet connection. I tried to check to see if I could do an update, and same problem. Here is the kicker. Mail, iChat, and Firefox all work fine. The only applications affected that I can find so far are iTunes, Safari, and Automatic Update.

I had Safari 4 dev preview installed then i removed it after installing 10.5.4 because i needed some plugins that wasn't working, the problem is that when i uninstalled it using the uninstaller in the dmg i got Safari 3.1.1 no problem i thought... But i was wrong.I wanted the latest version of Safari 3.1.2 so i went to software update in os x didn't find it so then i went to Apple's Safari site and downloaded the latest safari image they had when i was going to install it on my MacBook i can't because the system says i don't have 10.5.2 which is required but i have 10.5.4!! So i then uninstalled Safari 3.1.1 thinking that i then could install 3.1.2 but no now i can't install Safari

I got some eMacs for cheap and am currently cleaning them up.
When I try to run Software Update on them, I get the message that says "Software Update can't find the update server. Make sure you are connected to the internet, then try again."
These computers are definitely connected to the internet as I can browse from them.
Is it possible that they are looking for an old update server?
They're running 10.4.7 and 10.4.8.
I've tried deleting the com.apple.SoftwareUpdate.plist file as described here but that didn't work.

I desperately need to install the RED log and transfer tool to FCP, and it says it requires FCP V 6.0.4 Our company's macs are not connected to the internet, so an auto-update is not possible.
The only thing about it I've found on apple's website was a tec-doc, that says Pro applications update 2008-02 includes the FCP update, but I can't find it anywhere on their site. Pro app update 2008-03 does not update FCP.

every software update is at least 50MBs nowadays so i got to thinking where these files actually go after they've been installed. is there a way to remove these files? i reckon there shouldn't be a problem since they've already been installed?

Today a new auto-update came up and I ran it - it included a tweak to 10.7.3 as well as Safari and a few others. My Safari (5.2) got completely trashed. Will not even open any more - all it does is crash immediately upon launch. I have a Time Machine backup from about 40 minutes earlier I can recover from if needed. Meanwhile I'm lucky I have a MacBook Pro as well, and am able to get online while I am completely restoring Lion from a patchstick.
I'll post the crash report (I copied and saved it) once I get back up.Incidentally, I've been getting a lot of crashes in Mail as well. Always when the computer is asleep. Anyone else having these problems - or have a solution?

I have a Dual 1.8 GHz Power PC G5 and am running 10.4.11. When I select software update it says, "software Update can't connect to the update server. Make sure you are connected to the internet..." "Software Update can't check for updates because of a network problem." However, my internet connection works fine for everything else. I do have two peripheral drives connected. One of them had the same system as my main drive. However, the problem persists even when they are disconnected and I reboot. I can get the updates if I reboot from the peripheral.

This happens quite frequently on my mac book pro and my iphone. Is this normal? If I exit safari and restart, safari seems to be able to find the server or if I just click on a different saved bookmake and then go right back to the page it cannot find the server for, it works.

If I hit command-space and begin typing something in Spotlight, then go to Safari 4 and hit command-F, the search box is prefilled with whatever I typed in Spotlight. I don't know if this is the intended behavior or not, but I don't recall it happening in Safari 3.

Whenever I want to mail a Link to an Internet page, I click on "File" and then choose "mail Link to this page". Mail then opens with the Link included and I then email it to whoever I want. Since yesterday however I noticed that I can no longer do this. Whenever I want to mail a Link I get the following message: "An email message cant be created to send the Link because Safari cant find an email application" I tried a restart of the computer, I reset Safari but nothing helps. The problem persists. I checked with Firefox and here I have no problem to mail Links. Only Safari does not seem to be able to recognize that Mail is installed or cannot connect to Mail?
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

I have a problem in that the Safari folder is not found in the Library folder. I use OS X Lion and the Library folder is permanently displayed (by using Terminal) under Computer, but the Safari folder is strangely enough not there. I have tried to find it while showing hidden files (also by using Terminal commands) but to no avail. Both Lion and Safari are updated to their latest versions.I need to find and use the bookmarks.plist file, which cannot be found since its parent Safari folder is not displayed. (I need it to alter it in order to remove the bookmarks and bookmark bar folders on the iPhone, by iTunes sync.)

The find function in Safari no longer finds strings within a word. A string can only be found if if the first letters of the word are included. This is different to Firefox, where the find function will find any string.

So I'm brand new to Macs. I'm trying to relearn everything I know in Windows, and it's a bit overwhelming! Anyway I'm stumped by something that seems like it should be rather simple. I'm trying to listen to XM Radio Online. Safari tells me that the required plugin is not installed, but it doesn't give me any option to install it! So I installed Chrome thinking it would be smarter than Safari. Chrome shows me the little plugin icon, but it doesn't let me install the plugin either. How the heck am I supposed to install plugins in these browsers?

Just got my first Mac (24 inch iMac) a couple of weeks ago and overall, I am quite happy. Like it all except for the Mouse (more on that later). I have had a couple of bizarre issues with Safari that I would like some feedback on.
1. Twice in the last two weeks, Safari has gotten itself in a state where it simply will not display certain web pages. For example, the last time, it complained that it could not find google. Other sites displayed fine. The site wasn't down. Firefox had no problems accessing it. Clearing the cache and a complete reset did not help.In the end, I actually had to reboot before Safari started finding google again.
2. I have had some problems getting Safari to accept proxy settings. I often VPN into work and during that period, I have to turn proxies on and once I disconnect, I turn proxies off. I noticed that I have to do things in a certain specific order for Safari to pick up the proxy changes. I first have to turn the proxies on, then connect with VPN and once I am done, I have to turn the proxies off and then disconnect. If I don't do things in that order, Safari behaves as though the change in proxy settings was not made at all.
I tried Apple tech support but I got a rather clueless individual on the other end of the line and I spent an hour plus with her trying all sorts of things that accomplished precisely nothing. This was a brand new iMac with just a Cisco VPN, Firefox and a VNC client installed on it - so I thought some of my problems would be rather easily reproducible.
That apart, I have enjoyed the experience. Pretty much everything else worked like a charm except for the mouse which I already detest. I'll spare you my litany of complaints on that but I am replacing it in short order - probably with a Logitech MX400.

I know that firefox has foxtorrent, and opera has a bittorrent downloader built-in, but I'm not really interested in switching browsers. I have looked everywhere but to no avail for a plugin that integrates directly into safari that can handle torrents.

I read a lot of reports that are similar to mine, but I can't find the answers you gave them. I clicked on "watch video." This was a video re: exercises for the back. Anyway, a message popped up stating this: Safari cannot find the internet plug-in. The page "Video/TV Page has content of MIME type "video/x-ms-asf-plugin", but you don't have a plug-in installed for this MIME type. A plug-in should be available on this page: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/med...ad/default.asp Do you want to open this page?
I said yes, but this site confused me. I don't want to download something and have it be the wrong thing to download.
I got suggestions of updating Flash, I got suggestions of reinstalling Windows Media Player.
So far I haven't done anything. When in doubt, call someone who cares. I hope I came to the right place. I almost logged into "Just Answer," until I realized I had been there before about a year ago. Don't want to go back.
