PowerPC :: Attaching New Hinge To Case Without Damaging Anything?

Jan 1, 2009

Hi, I just acquired a PowerMac G4 500mhz that works great. However, the hinge is broken. It is on the right side (if you are sitting at the laptop). The screen casing is broken where the hinge is. There is nothing wrong with the screen, just the aluminum cases that covers it on the edges. I was able to remove the broken hinge from the computer. My problem is attaching a new hinge to the case without damaging anything.

OS X :: Way To Eject Disc From Snow Lepoard Without Any Damaging?

Sep 2, 2009

I have a 2009 imac and I just upgraded to snow lepoardmy dad put in some disc for something and now it won't eject it will mount and from looking at the files its a windows disc because its all .exe files when I eject it from finder the disc image will disappear but it doesn't come out or even make a sound in disk utility the eject option is faded out I've tried restarting and pressing the mouse, eject button, and f12 but none work the drive is always quiet except when its booting it makes a sound like its taking a disc otherwise its completely silent I know that there is no way to manually eject so I'm going to apple on the weekend My question is whether this is a drive problem or a software problem because of snow lepoard(which would seem silly because snow lepoard suppose to be better at ejecting)

Windows On Mac :: Ubuntu On Macbook...Can It Overheat, Damaging The Internal Components

Jun 25, 2007

first I know this isn't a Linux form, and there is not a linux forum, but thought this would be the best place to put this, because I supose it applies to windows as well.

Anyway, I have a CD rev A Macbook, that I just installed Ubuntu with. I love it, but I am afraid one day it will overheat and cause my processor to melt. Is that possible? I have heard that if it gets to hot, that the thing will just shut off, but I don't want to take any chances.

MacBook Pro :: Remove The Windows Partition Completely Without Damaging Mac Side To Allow For More Storage

Jul 28, 2010

So I'm using bootcamp to load up windows, but now I have run out of room on my Mac partition. I still have 30GB on my windows partition, and I haven't even used it ONCE! Honestly at this point I don't think I will ever need it....

But so my questions is, would there be any way to remove the windows partition completely without damaging my Mac side to allow for more storage? Or maybe just shrink the windows partition so that I can free up an extra 20GB or so?

PowerPC :: Linux Version To Use B&W G3?

Nov 15, 2006

My office is getting rid of a bunch of old computer parts and one of them happens to be a B&W G3. As far as I know it works, the hard drive may be failing since it books up with the folder with a question mark on it. I don't know the full specs other than at least 128MB of RAM (there's two sticks and I can only tell what one of them says), not sure of anything else since it won't boot up.

It comes with an OS 8 disc but I'm sure something newer can run on it. What versions of Linux would be good to try out? I'm tempted to put it in the kitchen and make it a household computer but I'm not sure yet. Gotta see if its working all the way first...

MacBook Air :: Doesn't Run With Linux?

Feb 22, 2008

I have a home built P.C. that I run ubuntu on. It's a really kickass machine and contains everything I need, it runs the first intel quad core processor. My delimma(not really, just a hard choice) is that I can't decide on MBA or and MBP. If I get an MBP I can just keep running my PC as is. But if I get a MBA(which is all I really need) don't I need mac os x to use the features of my computer, like the disc drive and such to run on a MBA. Does the MBA run with Windows? Certainly it doesnt run with Linux?

Software :: Compiling In Osx Vs Linux

Sep 15, 2009

I have been compiling and running a model (all fortran 90 scripts) on our university's Linux cluster test module. I purchased a MacBook about a year ago, and would like to learn how to compile and run my model on osx. To build my model in Linux, I set:

1. env. variables for MPI and NETCDF directories
2. flags for -llapack -lblas
3. user-specified fortran and c compiler overrides (fc and cc)

A colleague advised me to 'use gfortran as part of gcc 4.3+. To be installed by use of fink', but I honestly do not quite know where to begin doing all of this on my MacBook. If you can provide any guidance, point me to another forum / reference, I would greatly appreciate your time.

I am using Linux/Ubuntu for 3 years now . I always wanted a Mac but could not afford it. Mac OS is quite similar to Ubuntu as they share common back ground from Unix. what thing I am going to miss if I switch. Ubuntu is highly customizable (we can make it look according to our needs). I wonder if this can be done with Mac OS X. How do you use your computer with only one mouse button. I am looking to buy a MBP 15".

PowerPC :: Install Linux On An IBook G4?

Sep 19, 2008

I'm looking for a very easy to install Linux on my old iBook G4 and I would like it to support my Airport card without having to do much configuring. Is there any Linux out there that would be suitable for me? I'd like for it to run fairly fast as my G4 is only 256mb RAM.

I do remember looking into this before but, at that time, the only useable Linuxs didn't have immediate support for the Airport card and you needed to download these drivers and install them from the command line interface and it was very confusing.

PowerPC :: Reinstalling OS From Linux On IBook?

Sep 30, 2008

got an IBook with its original install disks. OS 9.2. It has Linux on it now and works ok with that. I want Mac OS back on it but when I try to install it tells me that it can't find the hard drive. So thinking that I might have the wrong disks, ( i got it used so not positive 9.2 is correct) I got OS 10 and it does the same thing. When I get to the part that it asks 'where' do you want to install it show no disks at all except the CD drive.

Any Ideas what I need to do? As I said the disks are there and functioning because Linux is installed and works. Is there some type of Utility that I need to run to put a Mac partition back on it? That's my only idea that I can think of. If so what and where can I get it?

PowerPC :: Boot From Linux Disc On G5

Dec 5, 2008

#I recently acquired a 1.6 GHz G5 PPC, and I'd like to install Linux on it. I had to put in a new hard drive, so I put in a Seagate, 7200 RPM, 3.0 gb/s, 250 GB (just came yesterday). I'm not having any luck getting it to boot from a Linux disc though; my friend gave me a version of Feisty Fawn, no luck. I tried burning a copy of ubuntu, version 7.10 for PPC, from Apple's native utility but that didn't work either. I know that the super drive is reading, though, because if I put in my Macbook Pro copy of OS X it gives me angry messages. When I press the option button on restart, I get a blue screen with two buttons; a return button and a forward arrow button. Also, what's the right way to burn Ubuntu to a disc; I tried using FireStarter FX but it kept on telling me that burning could not be completed.

OS X :: Cannot (Specify HTTP URL) Print From Mac To Linux Server

Mar 29, 2009

I'm new to Mac OS X, but have been working with Linux for almost 9 yrs now. I have set up a Linux box with CUPS 1.3.9. I can print from the server, and from other Linux stations to that remote server. However, I can't print from a client MacBook. I set up CUPS on the client Mac via
http://localhost:631
and created a printer associated with the remote queue / printer on Linux (the URL I use on OS X is
http://mylinuxserver:631/printers/hpprinter
and the driver is RAW).

I have no problems sending a test page from the CUPS web interface on Mac OS X to the Linux server -- the test page gets printed OK. However, I can't see the printer I just defined from other Mac OS X apps, and neither can I see it from the Add Printer Dialog on System Preferences (it's empty). I tried creating the printer at the Add Printer dialog, but it would neither let me specify an HTTP URL (as far as I know, I had to use the IP icon on the toolbar) nor specify "RAW". So I tried creating a "dummy" printer in the Add Printer dialog, with a basic config, and then changing it from the CUPS web GUI. This didn't work either, since when I went back to the Add Printer dialog, the printer was gone.
