My music collection is entirely on a 500 GB MyBook running through my current desktop PC. I am interested in a new Mac, but I am wondering, how will I be able to transfer all of my music files to the new Mac?
Can the new iMacs read MyBook external hard drives? Do I have to burn all of my music files onto dvds? Must I get bootcamp and purchase Windows for the Mac?
I hate lugging all my dvds on the road, how do I transfer my dvd collection to my hard drive?

When I got the macbook with my student discount I got a printer for �20 from apple, as well as applecare for 3 years and a �18 ipod nano and a case/sleeve for when I have to bring it travelling.
1. I am at university/college and I was wondering what accessories you would recommend me?
2. I am looking at getting an external USB hard drive - for either my music and movie collection or for time machine.
What drive would you recommend? The apple one is too expensive, I assume any standard USB one will work though?
And is it possible to partition the drive, if it was big enough, and make like a 320gb partition for time machine and then have the rest for normal storage?
3. I know everyone says there are no viruses for macs etc. and stuff, but there is antivirus software available, which there must be a reason for? Is it wise to get antivirus software for a mac, or is it completely un-needed? I have also enabled the firewall.
4. Does anyone think mobileme is worth paying that much for? The guy in the apple store said it would be especially good since I have an iphone as well. And would it work with my gmail account?

All my music is on an external hard drive created some while ago through a Sony Vaio PC. I now want to use that same hard drive to manage my music on my Mac, but it won't let me.
Secondly, I cannot get my bought music - while using my Mac - to be recognised and synched onto my iPod, although it plays fine on the computer itself.

I have two itunes libraries, a library of current podcasts and music on my internal drive (ID) (which runs the operating system) which is running out of space, and an external drive (ED) with old music (from CDs) that I keep in stoarge for special occassions when I am away from home and I want to play music.
The ID and the ED have their own itunes library.
I am running out of ID space, so I want to move all my pre-2012 podcasts from my ID to my ED. I will then have the podcast when I am away from home and I want to play them for myself or others.
How do I transfer just the podcasts dated prior to 31 December 2011 from the ID to the ED? After I transfer them, i can delete the podcasts from the ID and get more free space.

I have a 3TB USB 2.0 "media" external hard drive attached to my iMac. I use it to store all itunes media only, since I have over 300 movies. I also have tv shows, music etc. I just got a new 2TB thunderbolt LaCie Big Disk external drive. I want to transfer all stuff in "media" USB hard drive to new thunderbolt drive. Reason for doing this, sometimes current USB "media" drive lags on responding when I come back to use itunes from sleep or inactivity. I'm thinking about just dragging all content from old drive to new drive, eject old drive, name new thunderbolt drive "media", and relaunch itunes. Would that work successfully? I'd like my itunes to remember my play count. If my content play count is lost, does iMatch remembers play count and once I update my iMatch with new thunderbolt drive installed, will my play count be updated to my itunes?

I have just bought my first iMac after my old windows PC blue screened and died this week. I have been using itunes for years an have 2 ipods and an ipad. I managed to extract my old hard drive from the tower unit and have managed to get it working using a caddy. I have transferred my iTunes folder to an external hard drive. I have set up my Mac in the basic manner and now want to transfer my itunes to the new itunes on my new Mac. I have tried using the Setup Assistant but when I plug in the hard drive it is not recognised and nothing happens except the spinning wheel.

Awhile back, I'd run out of space on my internal HD and transferred all of my content to a larger external HD. I don't remember "repointing" my iTunes Library (as you can do in iPhoto) but somehow, iTunes recognized this and has since been backing up and restoring my iPhone to/from it.
This however, has created quite a few problems (too numerous to mention) and so, having recently installed a larger HD in my internal, I now want to re-point iTunes back to it.
How is this achieved?

I have a 1TB Time capsule, I would like to attach a USB drive to the Time Capsule and transfer my iTunes Library to it so I can run itunes from wifi. I am new to network stuff. My current iTunes library is on a USB drive velcro'd to the back of my Macbook - rather inconvenient, the USB port is loose. The music files are external but the library files with ratings/play counts are in the iTunes folder.

I have an iMac that is rapidly filling up. I would like to move my iTunes and iPhoto library to my external harddrive (I currently use for Time Machine). Is this possible or even adviseable? I currently have about 200 gb of music on my external hard drive (connected to my pc.) The internal hard drive on my pc does not have space to accomodate the files on my external.
I do not have the "Copy files to iTunes music folder" currently enabled because my internal doesn't have space. (And I like having the original music files in a separate location as I have over 30,000 songs). I don't know how to transfer my external and music to my macbook, since I will have to reformat the drive (which would erase everything on it, therefore I somehow have to make a backup either on my mac or on my pc. but what to do about the iTunes .xml file and iTunes folder on the internal pc drive??).
I want to digitize my DVD collection, first to get everything in one spot and two, to stop my kids from wrecking all the DVD's we have. Hopefully the end result will be to move all our DVD's (maybe 50 or so) onto our MacBook Pro, into iTunes and be able to access them through Home Sharing on the new Apple TV.
Researching this for a while, it seems like a I need to download Mac The Ripper and/or Handbrake. I'm not sure if I need both of them or just one to do this. I can't seem to find something that addresses this for a newbie like myself.
I just downloaded the MIT Introduction to Algorithms on iTunes U but when I look in my iTunes U section of iTunes the videos are showing up as a separate collection to the notes. I have given them both th exact same metadata in the hope that this would 'merge' them as a single collection but no luck.

I want to have my music in this order: artist (alphabetically) ,year (ascending 2001 to 2008 for example for each artist) and albums that have various artist with them with to stay grouped together in itunes. Even though I click make a compilation. It wont order that way. I had it last time.
For example UNKLE's war stories has various artists collaborating on the album, it stays spread apart...I want it to be listed together as one album and not spread apart. But, i want to keep the artist names.

I understand how to move the whole library onto an external HD, moving the media folder location on itunes preferences etc, but say i wanted to move the library (which is about 60 gigs) to my external HD but keep about 10 gigs on my internal drive? How do I do this, assuming the amount i want to keep is too large to manually drag and drop each song/album fro my external drive onto my internal one.
Also my itunes says my library is about 52 gigs, but in finder it says my songs are about 65 gigs, why is this and how can i delete the extra gigs? I'm in Home/Music/Itunes/Itunes Music incase thats the wrong location.
My friend wanted some files to be transferred to his external hard drive from my Mac. As he is a Windows user, I guess his hard drive is formatted for Windows as well. As I plug in the hard disk in my Mac, I can't transfer the files. It says something like "the disk cannot be modified". I have a few external drives that i use with Media players and they prefer and work better when formatted to NTFS problem is, MACs can only read and write to FAT32. I have Windows 7 on my macbook ( though my movie collection is on my iMac ) via bootcamp, so that isn't a option. I heard and read about some programs and what not.. but what is the fastest and easiest way to transfer files from my iMac to a NTFS formatted HD? I have movies ( some over 4gb in size ) on my iMac.

I'd like to use Bento and the iPhone Bento app to help me to keep track of my music and dvd collections so that I don't end up buying cd's over again that I already own.
The iTunes database is an XML file and so far I haven't had much luck importing it into Bento. Is there another way to get where I want to go? When I was beta testing Bento a few years ago I kept telling their people that having a one or two step import of iTunes information would be a very good idea. Well, they didn't apparently think so as it's now at rev 3 and no iTunes import that I've been able to find.
Also neither Excel or Numbers will touch the XML file, even after heavy editing.
Anyone done this with Bento? Is there an easier way?
I have plugged in my External drive to my MacBook Pro, and it's all fine when I open the files in it. But as I try to transfer files to my hard drive, it won't transfer. Instead it keeps denied and the same goes when I try to transfer some files to another persons hard drive.

I used to store all my music on an external drive, but now that I got a Mac I decided to just save them on the internal drive. When I select the External drive and Copy the files to transfer somewhere along the lines it gives me an error and pretty much the transfer Stalls(the transfer window stays open but nothing is being moved) and it wont close or nothing unless I restart. Specifically, I currently have an older (white) iMac hooked up to two 2TB external hard drives. One if for backup but the other one has all my iPhoto and iTunes content on it, including about 1.5 TB of movies and TV shows that I have ripped. None of this material is on the computer's internal hard drive - it is all on the external hard drive.
Because my new iMac has a 2 TB internal hard drive, I want to transfer all the iPhoto and iTunes content currently on the external hard drives onto the internal hard drive of the new iMac. Will Migration Assistant handle this and will it be clear what I need to do?
I just bought a Western Digital 1TB My Book Essential Edition external hard drive. I have a lot of videos, stored as disk images, from my HD camcorder on my MacBook that I want to copy onto the external hard drive for storage and also transfer to my other MacBook. The problem is that this hard drive is setup so that it will not transfer any file over 4 GB. A lot of these disk images are over 4GB and thus will not transfer. Is there any way to reformat this external HD to a system that will allow transfer over the 4GB threshold? If so, can someone please explain the process to me in as much detail as possible? If not, can someone recommend an external HD that does not have transfer limits?
