OS X :: Itunes Music Files Cannot Be Located?
Dec 12, 2010
Ok so yesterday I logged into my account on my computer and clicked itunes to open it. Instead of going to my library it said It cannot find my music library and told me to locate it. I clicked "Locate" and it went to my finder. We have had an external drive for the the past 6 months and I had been storing all my itunes on the external drive AND on the normal hard drive. So when I clicked the locate button, I chose the itunes library in my external library. Now my library is setup like it was about 2 years ago, complete with ipod nano games, playlist, and songs I have deleted. when I click a song to play it says "Cannot locate file." If i go into the finder and find the normal hard drive, and go into itunes media, I can double click the songs and play the songs in itunes. So I have no idea why all this happened but Is the only way to get all my songs back, to delete all the songs that cannot be l0 located and drag my whole library thats stored on my normal hard drive into itunes?

I am having trouble routing my itunes to my external hard drive using a PC. I have a large number of music files on my external hard drive and do not want to move the files to my internal hard drive. I have tried going to preferences and selecting the external drive, but itunes does not display my music.

I used the apple tutorial regarding using my ipod to transfer all of my music from my pc to my mac mini. It worked, had everything up and going. Erroneously deleted the file containing the music, so now I get the "can't be located" error. All of the music is still on my ipod, and I think it should still be on my pc. Is my best bet to redo the tutorial? Or is there a way to use what is on my ipod and put the folder back onto my mac desktop? Nothing was backed up, and trash is emptied.

I have transferred my itunes music on to my external HD. The music is there and that is fine. I then deleted the old itunes folder from my actual HD. I have now wanted to access the music on the external HD, and have attempted to select the new music file location on the external HD via the itunes/preferences/advanced window, selected the new file path and it will just not show in itunes!

I have a Lacie external hard disk that was originally formatted for PCs. I have some files there, but more importantly, my iTunes library is saved directly on the Lacie (I have everything on apple lossless, so they are some big files). I will keep using this PC while connected to the Lacie hard disk to syncro my iPod.
The problem is that I bought a mac now and I wanted the Lacie hard disk to be able to transfer files from mac to pc and vice versa. I have already read that I would have to copy the files that are on the Lacie, reformat the Lacie and then paste the files back. My only doubt is that if I do this reformatting, will I have any problems using the iTunes library while connected to my pc and iPod?
I just ask that because every time I changed any iTunes library folder on the computer, the iTunes would say that the music file couldnt be found and ask me if I wanted to look for the file. I didnt want to reformat the Lacie to later find out that I would have to look for every single music file, because that would be nearly impossible. I dont know if I was able to make my question really clear

First the hardware: MacBook 3,1 Santa Rose Intel 2.20 Ghz SATA: FUJITSU MHY2160BH 149.05 GB Journaled HFS+ I recently reinstalled OS X, and before doing so I used Disk Utility of the install disc to earse the HD (the security option i chose was "don't erase data") I want to recover some files from my old user (Music & Picutres folder in home) so I got Disc Rescue II and did a scan. DSII found the folders so how do I go about restoring them? Will I need an external drive that is atleast the same size as the files I want to recover? I have over 40GB of music but only a 8GB thumb drive.. Will it be possible for me to get my files back?

I am trying to figure out where the files are located that are downloaded when you go through the "Software Update" function of OS X. I updated the software on my MacBook Pro this morning and I need to update the same files on my iMac and would prefer to copy the files from the MacBook to the iMac but I don't know where they are located, if anywhere ....
Yes, I could d/l them again on the other machine but I live out in the middle of nowhere and have satellite internet service, which if you aren't familiar, satellite internet is marginally better than dialup - at least compared to "city" internet options. The other issue, besides speed, is data allotment, I only get 475 mbytes in a 24 hour period with an exception from between 2:00 AM and 7:00 AM - during that time there isn't a bandwidth restriction. So, I can get up at 2:00 AM and start the d/l and go back to bed but I'd rather just copy them from one computer to the other, if that is possible.

Recently I was organizing my files and I moved some items I downloaded with uTorrent from my generic "Downloads" folder to the specific folder that I wanted to organize the file in. Now I would like to seed those files but the torrent file can no longer locate them on my computer. I'm looking for a way to modify the directory that the torrent file looks for the downloaded file in, but I can't find a way to change that. In "Preferences", I even changed the default download location to the folder that the files I want to seed are in, but that hasn't helped.
I had this problem with 4 files that I moved, and in attempting to get it to recognize the new location of the files, I failed and actually ended up redownloading the files through the bittorrent swarm. I would like to avoid doing this for the remaining two files and for other files in the future because this particular tracker keeps tabs on upload and download ratios. The files are not copyrighted and are freely available and endorsed to be torrented, so there are no legal concerns.

I've been wondering, if there is a way to hide files that are not located in "User/Username/...." in Terminal?
The command I use to hide the files for example is: chflag hidden ~/Desktop/*
However, if I the file/folder I want to hide is not in 'User/Username..." I will not be able to hide it... So how do you change it so that you can hide the folders that are not located in "User/Username"?
Also, I've ran into a problem!
My "Username" that one that has an house icon is missing when I access it from Machintosh HD --> Users Folder.
I guessed that it was hidden somehow but not too long ago it was in the User folder... So I typed in "defaults write com.apple.finder ShowAllFiles True" and I found a bunch of weird files on my Desktop and my Machintosh HD... and I found the Username house icon... I do not know what I did in terminal that hid it.

-My job is offering to buy me new Mac laptop (like ).
-At home I already own a 5 year old Mac Book Pro, upgradable to Lion, beat up on the outside, could change hard drive myself.
-Also own a iMac which has a new 1TB hard drive I put in there. This machine is not upgradable to Lion. Connected to this iMac is a 1TB external back up drive which backs up this iMac.
I have right now about 75GB of music in my iTunes right now (on MacBookPro), plus about 600 Cds to be ripped and imported at some point. I am considering using Amazon Music Cloud or iTunes Match at some point but....I may will still want to have a backup of my music anyway? and it may be I may not like playing music off of clouds? (because it relies on my intenert connection....)
So if I was to store my music collection.....should it be on: -The old iMac; use it as a jukebox? Can I control the iMac and its iTunes from new laptop? (iMac is 10.4.8 which may have sharing limits?)-Is this practical?
-Are there external hard drives out there that wake up fast and put music there? (in the past, loading the library takes longer when having the music on external hard drive).
Overall, I live in a small place so I dont necessarily want to fill up my space with mutliple computers. I almost wish I didnt have the old machines, it would simplify my decisions!

For some reason seem to have a duplicate of some music in my ITunes folder.I was hoping to clean it up my merging and deleting. In the iTunes folder songs are in folders named for the artist, except for this folder which is labelled "Music" and below it are also folders labelled for each of the artist. Some of these are duplicate artist, with some duplicate songs, but have 1 or more more songs in them. Some are not in the main Music listing at all. I was thinking to just move them up one level, merge the songs that are duplicates, add the FOLDERS (Artist) that are not in the main. Will iTunes still see them? Looks like this (as an example)
USER/ME/MUSIC (and then)
Folder - 8 Mile
Folder - Adele
Song 1
Song 2
[code].....
In this example "Adele" Sub Folder has duplicates of Song 1 and Song 2 of the Main MUSIC folder but doe snto have Song 3.

I've recently purchased a MacBook Pro, I now wish to sort my music collection out and store all music on the network drive which can be accessed via the cloud, not apple cloud incidentally. The thing is I have a variety if music files in various locations on the pc laptop, the old network drive. Is there any way I can find the location of the music file through iTunes So I can locate it on the network drive and transfer to the new cloud drive? I see there is a consolidate function in iTunes, would this do the job for me?

I finally ripped my music into digital format. It is a very large library so I performed the rips in four segments creating four folders of music. The highest level folders are Music1, Music2, Music3, Music4. The next layer folder is the artists name, then album name, then the actual MP3S.
How do I merge the folders? If I perform a copy the first artist name is sees that already is exists, the finder wants me to skip the copy or replace the folder that is there. I simply want to add the folder or merge it. Is there a "merge" function in OSX? I tried Carbon Copy but it will not copy or sync fils on the same disk.

I'm trying to bring all my music files from my Windows computer so I copied all my music files from my Windows computer to my external hard drive, and then copied from the external hard drive to my iTunes music folder in my new iMac. When I compared the info between my iTunes music folder, and the music files on my external hard drive, the iTunes music folder had more files. By looking through the files it looks like two extra files were added to each album folder....a "folder.jpg" file and a "AlbumArtSmall.jpg" file was created. I know that these are only pic files, but I didn't have those files when all my music files were on my Windows machine, how come they show up now? Are those two files necessary? Can I just delete those?

I've downloaded mp3 files from various websites that give away free music. They download as zip files and once I unzip them, I move the folder to the "Music" folder. Then I import them into iTunes (File ---> Add to Library). I'd like to make the "Music" folder more organized. Right now I have the "iTunes" folder within the "Music" folder, in addition to SEVERAL folders I've added from the free music I've downloaded. Even though I've already added this music to iTunes, if I delete the folders within the "Music" folder, iTunes will no longer be able to play it because it will say it cannot find the source. I get this, but was hoping there was a way to get it into the iTunes folder (the way it gets loaded when you import a CD or buy a song online- it automatically goes there).

I moved my iTunes Media folder to a second hard drive to free up space. I followed the Apple Support instruction for doing this. I have 200+ missing songs that I have to manually located.
Is there a way to do a group rather than one song at a time? I have over 2,000 songs, podcast, and movies. I am surprised just these fews can't be located by iTunes after I made the move.

I had to move around my files recently so needed to change the location iTunes looked for them. I ran across a hack whereby you edit the iTunes Music Library.xml file and then intentionally corrupt the iTunes Library.itl file so that it reimports the next time you restart iTunes (I'm sure many of you may already be familiar with this hack).
It almost works. Problem is that it doesn't import all my files. I have over 10000 files but it only imports 6445 of them. I noticed that the original xml filesize is 16MB. After importing, it gets chopped down to 10MB. What the heck is happening here?

I was adding some music to iTunes downloaded through acquisition x, and my external HD (Seagate 320 GB) all of a sudden has no music files anywhere on it. The available space is still the same as when i had 40 gigs of music on it, and iTunes says on opening: "The file "iTunes Library" does not appear to be a valid iTunes Library file. iTunes has created a new iTunes Library and renamed this file to "iTunes Library (Damaged)."
I can't find any .xml or .itl or a (damaged) library file ANYWHERE. THEN the next dialog display says the iTunes application could not be opened, the required file is in use.
So used an applescript to unhide invisible files and folders, and the .Trash is empty, Finder's trash is empty, searched all OVER for any trace of the .mp3 files in my library, but they have disappeared. I also can't unmount or eject, verify or repair my External because it is "in use." The only process running i can see is finder, though I'm not sure.

I am a "sort-of" new iTunes user. I used to use it to play music without care of how to use it properly. Since I did not want to carry many CDs around, I copied all the CDs into the HD of my MBP. For simplicity, let's say I named the folder of the first and second CDs to be CD1, CD2. I don't remember how I stored the files. Either by drag and drop to the list when iTunes is launched or by some kind of import function from iTunes. The files in the iTunes folder do not seem to correspond to those shown on the iTunes list. My music files are all over the places. Some in the library folders and some seem to be in the playlist. Some of them seem to be in the unknown artist folder, etc. It is like a mess. As I just bought the IPT, I want to re-organize the files before syncing the music files from my MBP to the IPT. What is the best way to do in this case?
