OS X :: Is This Possible: Reinstall OSX, No TM Restore, But Use The Same TM Volume

I was wondering: I want to upgrade from 10.5 to 10.6 by doing a complete wipe and install. I have Time Machine running, but I don't want to restore from that. I will have a SuperDuper clone as archive of the 10.5 installation, from which I can copy all the files that I still need. I would like to use the same volume for Time Machine in 10.6 as I did in 10.5.
Can I do this without wiping all the TM-data from the 10.5 install?I don't mind losing the oldest data from 10.5 to accomodate for the new data from the 10.6 install. But it would be nice to have the backups from the old install for as long as possible, just in case I've done something stupid but haven't realised it yet. (That's the whole point of Time Machine, right?)
I've been searching around, but I can't find anything that describes this particular use of the system. Most posts and articles are about restoring an installation using the Time Machine backup data, or accessing back-up data on a different volume.
I recently decided to increase the volume of my bootcamp disk, which I had done in the past using a method which ultimately made the disk unrecognizable. This time around I used Winclone to create an image of my bootcamp disk. I was not sure exactly how Winclone worked and to be safe I decided to keep the Bootcamp disk I had, and I created a third partition of a larger volume to which I restored the bootcamp image. Everything worked fine obviously, and the image was restored correctly to the new larger volume. The dilemma is I had two bootcamp disks, so I erased the smaller volume because I no longer needed it. Currently I am trying to restore this empty space within the main disk to the Macintosh HD. Disk util looks like:
I know I can just create a backup of the macintosh HD, another image of the bootcamp disk, and format the disk and start over, but I am hoping there is an easier way to go about this; considering there has been a method engineered such that I can just drag that corner of the mac HD and voila I have instantly more storage after applying, it seems viable that there is something that can be done rather than formatting my disk, unless the necessity for that of course was overlooked. My iMac (2009 version) OS 10.9.4 runs sloooow to start and load. It takes about 5 minutes before I can use my IMac. I have used DiskWarrior, TechToolPro, and ran DiskUtilities repair permissions and disk a zillion times with no difference. I wanted to try "Restore" feature by starting up with Option key held down. I do not use TimeMachine. I used DiskUtilites to repair permissions and disc with no difference. I note that there is a choice to reinstall new copy of OS X. Will that result in wiping out all my third party applications?
I lost an external hard drive due to failure. Luckily, I found out that for some reason Time Machine had backed up the drive's volume along with my startup internal drive.Now I just want to restore that lost drive's volume folder from Time Machine to a NEW external drive. However, I imagine that if I merely click "Restore" from Time Machine app it will attempt to put this volume (which is 100GB) onto my internal drive.
Is there a way to direct the location of the restore of that volume folder to my new external drive? Or can I just go into my Time Machine Backup drive and drag and drop the volume contents from the Time Machine volume onto it?

I wanted to unzip a file with BetterZip. It said there exists another file with the same name.I answered it's question if I want to replace or unzip this file to another place just with replace. But the result was that the whole content of the folder where the file should be extracted to, was deleted by BetterZip.The volume on which that happened is not my start / system volume, it's a separate volume only with data.
1.) Exists a way to see a list of the files which were deleted ? (Because I don't know if there was something really important inside.)
2.) Is there a terminal command or another method to get these files back to that folder ?
With Firevault enabled, I attempted to reinstall OS X Lion from Recovery Mode. After being asked to enter the password to unlock the encrypted 'Mactinosh HD' disk, the reinstallation began. Everything seemed fine until the install process was supposedly finished, then a window popped up explaining that there was an error and to try again. I tried again and the same thing happened. I also tried to restore from Time Machine with no success (the same thing happened). I opened Disk Utility via Recovery mode and verified/repaired the 'Macintosh HD' disk and its permissions, but the reinstall/Time Machine restore still fails.
Then I erased the disk with Disc Utility, and attempted this again with no success. My computer no longer boots into OS X at all (it didn't even before I erased the disk via Disk Utility). It can only boot into Recovery Mode or Windows--I'm basically running a pretty overpriced Windows PC. I am using a 21" iMac with an Intel Core i5 processor, CPU @ 250GHz, have 4 GB of RAM and am (supposed to be) running OS X 10.7 Lion. Right now I'm using Windows 8 Consumer Preview x64 bit on a Bootcamp partition on the same computer if that matters to anyone.
My Macbook Pro hard drive failed. It is completely unrecoverable. I've purchased a replacement. How do I format the drive, install Lion and restore my system from my Time Machine backup? My Time Machine backup was created from a USB connection directly to my Macbook Pro. I have a Apple Lion USB Install Thumbdrive.
Since upgrading to Lion I've experienced periodic crashes- my 24" iMac (2.93 GHz Core 2 Duo with 4GB memory) suddenly shut down using iPhoto, Safari, and/or Pages. After running numerous hardware diagnostic tests I was told it was not a hardware problem, and a complete reinstall of Lion and all Apple software was recommended. I had back-ups on a My Book which I thought I could easily use to restore my personal data. I was directed to drag files between Finder windows rather than try to restore from backup via Time Machine. All was well & good until I tried to restore my numerous mail folders and locally-saved emails.
Evidently Mail is a hidden folder... I've been told by user group buddies how to see the hidden Mail folder on my iMac, but not on the My Book. Trying to restore from back-up via Time Machine is not an option, as I guess it doesn't recognize the newly installed system. Also tried going into Mail and importing, but when I navigate to the backup there is no visible Mail folder. Another suggestion was to try 3rd party software i.e. Back in Time or BackUp Loupe. I keep thinking there's some secret key combination, some easy way I just don't know of to retrieve my Mail data from the backup... is there???

I've got a Macbook Pro with Snow Leopard installed, but it has been going sort of sluggish lately so I've decided to do a clean reinstall of Snow Leopard to try and improve things. I've got an up-to-date backup with Time Machine to my Time Capsule. When I do a clean install of Snow Leopard, will I be able to easily restore the files that I want to keep and the applications that I want to put back on my system (with their settings)?
So I thought I was a know it all and thought I could remove my Windows partition without reading the instructions. Typically one would do the following: 1. In Mac OS X, quit all open applications and log out any other users on your computer. 2. Open Boot Camp Assistant, in the Utilities folder in the Applications folder. 3. Select "Restore the startup disk to a single volume" and then click Continue.
However, I messed it up. Instead of going through Bootcamp assistant, I went through Disk Utility and "erased" the Bootcamp volume. Now I am not sure where I at? I erased it, but you can still see the Bootcamp volume listed. And now when O try to use Bootcamp assistant to remove the partition I get the following: The startup disk cannot be partitioned or restored to a single partition. The startup disk must be formatted as a single Mac OS extended (journaled) volume or already partitioned by boot camp assistant for installing windows. I want to reinstall a Windows, but want to start fresh.
I have a Mac Pro and not too long ago I swapped from a fat, heavy and filthy white Apple Keyboard to a new skinny silver one. I like it, and also love that the F7-9 Skip Back-Pause/Play-Skip Forward keys work for iTunes, even when another app is active (what's the word I'm looking for - in focus or whatever). But I use Optical output, so the volume keys (F10-12) don't do anything. I know that, when iTunes is the active app, I can command-+/- to change the volume, but I'd love to be able to map the F10-12 keys to do that - without having to have iTunes active (playing, but not the active window).
Recently, my newer (last year) iMac probably running 10.5 started speaking and wont shut up... there is no obvious way to turn it off. I usually figure problems out myself but there are no system preferences that effect it. I even changed the voice in preferences as a test and it is still the same guy reading everything clicked in all applications except when I am in system preferences so far. Usually when I run into a dead end like this there is some mystery key command that works... anyone know?I also noticed that some of the top line (f) keys are not doing what they are supposed to any longer as well... volume up opens the window for expose & spaces it looks like and does not control the volume monitor brightness controls are not working either... I went to the key and mouse preferences and set the key strokes to default and still the same.
I have my imac apart right now and replaced the internal HD as it was not working. I assume the problem is the new one is not formatted with OSX, so from the INSTALL CD I opened the disk utility and see only one drive called "MEDIA".? Or is that just part of the install dvd that looks like a HD? In the system it shows as not formatted, 0 bytes. When selected in Partition it says :
"This voume is the startup volume and cannot be erased. Size 7.1 GB The disk is not writable and cannot be partitioned"
So i guess thats not my new HD I am seeing? Other than that there is only the two OSX install CD icons.
I was wondering if anyone knows how to do this- it is a pita to adjust separate volume controls on everything. If I adjust the volume on the keyboard, the volume slider in itunes doe snot move. If I set the volume on itunes with a mouse, then come home and use the volume controls on my keyboard, I have to also manually adjust the slider in itunes. Anyway to link the two?
Before I get flamed and etc... I have google and done some research about this issue but cannot find much about it.
I am not sure if this is a very common issue or topic but how do you adjust or modify your apple keyboard so that you can adjust screen brightness or volume? I am currently running Windows XP SP3, on a 2.4Ghz Unibody Macbook.
How long should I be stuck on the screen "calculating space required to restore data"? I've been on this screen for about 20, 30 minutes. The "hash mark wheel" is spinning, but just not seeing anything new. Is this normal? My backed up data is ~100 GB.
So here's my question:I've owned my share of MacBook Pro's, so I'm somewhat familiar, but not an expert. I got my mini last Friday from cowboom (a Best Buy affiliate), and since it's a pre-owned, it only came with the power cable and HDMI to DV-I adapeter. For those that ordered these, a majority of the people posted that it did not come with an OS, but the Internet Restore option fixed the trick. So I powered it on and got the flashing folder with the question mark. No OS. I did the Internet recovery and ran it through all the way to the the reinstall Lion screen. When asking what drive to install it on, there were no drives. I closed the installer and ran the disk utility and the only available drive was some basic drive that had a capacity less than 2GB. No other drives. I booted from my Lion that's on USB, but there's no drive to install it on. Any suggestions? I checked the warranty and the warranty cannot be verified. Some buyers said they had warranty from 8 months and up. One said his warranty showed starting from the day he restored his mac. I'm guessing because it was never registered I made an appointment tomorrow to take it to apple but is there something that can help avoid the trip?
My mac pro is attached with Cambridge SoundWorks speakers. The issue I am having is the volume is constintantly increasing and decreasing without me doing anything. This happens with all programs and websites including YouTube videos, iTunes, Final Cut x, QuickTime.I have tested the speakers on other computers and they work fine, I have also been using these speakers with my Mac Pro for the past 2 years without any issue. I have not downloaded anything or installed anything new.
Hi, I have a major problem. Windows XP was started to be installed on a new imac not using boot camp, this was a school teacher. The xp cd got stuck in the dvd drive. I had to pull the computer apart and remove the cd manually. Now I need to reinstall 10.5 whatever I do I cannot get it to boot from the mac cd.
Whenever I verify disk permissions/disk on Disk Utility, it tells me the volume needs to be repaired, and to do this I must insert the Mac OS X start-up disk
The only problem is, my slot where you put CDs is completely wrecked (I'm very hard on my computer). Is there any other way to fix this?
I tried to install Mac OS X on a thumb drive which is 8 gb. I followed the instructions on this website: [UrL]. When I tried to make it bootable in the terminal, it said No volume specified. What should I do?
I managed to set myself to only read. How do I fix this volume so I can Read & Write. Clicking the + and adding myself does not add myself to the list.
I am new to Mac and did something so now when I use my volume up/down/mute it goes to other functions. down- minimizes my screen. up- goes to my dashboard. I'd like to reset so that they go back to the original volume function. Thanks.
I am having a problem with my volume on my iMac. It is turned all the way up. and I keep turning it down everytime but when I restart or shutdown the computer when it boots back up it is back at being 100% volume again. How do I fix this to where it is at a decent volume at startup?
Logic Pro 8 and I can't seem to find where I can lower the amount of volume my microphone takes in. I'm only doing this for fun, I only have the internal mic right now. But I know where it is in garageband but can't find it in LP8. where that option is? When I do louder vocals, it sounds distorts and it's annoying. But it works out quite well in garageband if I lower the mic volume
