View 2 Replies View RelatedI've got an iMac that's a couple of years old, and time (along with software) has taken its toll on the speed of my iMac. I've run Onyx, I've downloaded a utility that lets me set time machine to run once a day instead of every hour, but I'm still not happy with some of the slowdowns I get. So, my question is what will give me the best performance bump?:
1 - Clean install of 10.5
2 - Add more RAM (currently I only have the 1GB it came with)
3 - Upgrade to 10.6
4 - Something else I'm not considering
I am starting to do more and more projects recently everything from illustrations, 3d motion graphics, video work, compositing etc... The laptop seems to be doing okay but I know there is room for improvement. I'm definitely going to max out my ram to 8gb. I'm thinking of doing this option bay thing here [URL].
And putting in a ssd as the main drive and keeping the 750 gb for storage purposes. That or possibly just upgrading the ram and the hard drive to something higher than 5400rpm. Should I just start with ram upgrade, should I just upgrade the hard drive to something with higher rpd or go solid state. Also what brands do you recommend?

I'm looking to improve my gaming performance. I run The Sims 3, Team Fortress 2, Counter-Strike: Source, Day of Defeat: Source, Half-Life 2 and a few other games natively on my MacBook Pro 13". By no I means do I care for getting unrealistically high performance, but I would like to know how an SSD would effect gaming performance. Would it give a notable increase in terms of FPS? or responsive?

My system (sig) has been relatively sluggish for a few months now. Right now I've only got Firefox, Snak, iTunes and Adium open and it's just prodding. It has a decent amount of ram that should be able to handle relatively easy computing like this.
So, my question is, what can I do? Should I just re-install? I wouldn't really mind doing that. I have all day off, and fresh installs are fun but I have a good amount of stuff on here. I have an external where all of my important stuff is, so a fresh install wouldn't be a bad idea in that way.
This machine is pretty old but I'd like it to be snappy like it once was.
Are there little things I can switch off or something?
I have a 13" mid '09 MacBook Pro. How do I improve it's graphic performance for gaming? I have version 10.7.4. On my buddies system he can go to system prefrences > Energy Saver > Optomize for better graphic performance, but I don't have this option...

And what about the subwoofer, does it need a special jack.Final question: is there something I could purchase to improve the sound that wouldn't be too expensive? I.e. is there some USB extension or sound jack item that I can buy, which will improve sound performance, and plug the speakers into that?
View 6 Replies View RelatedMy PowerMac plays most small videos (640p) on YouTube just fine, as well it does an OK job at playing slightly larger videos in Quicktime. I would like to not have to worry about Flash any more. With the new 10.1 beta 2 I notice a nice boost in performance, almost tolerable. If I install a graphics card that supports Core Video will it free up the CPU? How can I tell if a card supports Core Video? As well, what cards do you recommend? Is it difficult to flash a graphics card to work with OS X Tiger in a PowerMac G4?

Before the update I was gaming perfectly fine on pretty much Medium - High settings. The only game I have been playing lately is HON - Heroes of Newerth. Everything ran exactly as it should and I never had any problems. However, a couple of days ago I booted up the game and tried to play and noticed my FPS dropped by a lot. I even tried cranking down everything to low, and all it does is make everything pixelated, but my fps does not move at all.
I then realized the day before, I ran Software Update and ended up bumping up to 10.6.5. I honestly cannot think of what other reason in why performance would drop. I ran both a disk permission repair and a verify disk repair. Ran onyx to do a clean up scan. Flash online, video files, music, everything else I have tested is performing as it should. Anyone else having issues with the recent osx patch?
Has anyone else noticed their MBP running slightly hotter since the recent performance upgrade?
My MBP's CPU was previously idling at about 37C, and is suddenly idling at anything between 44-50C, seemingly for no reason (no extra processes running that I'm aware of, and no changes in general usage), and hasn't dropped below 42C in days. I realise this isn't hot, by a long shot, but it's a pretty noticeable increase from my previous idling temperatures, so I'm naturally a bit curious.
I've cleaned out the vent with compressed air (though the MBP is very new, so I wasn't expecting much effect), and that predictably did nothing to bring the temperature back down to its former average... so I'm wondering now if there's something in the performance upgrade that makes the CPU run a little hotter than it would've done before?
I have been reading that several people are seeing much cooler temperatures on their Mac notebooks and they think it's due to better graphics drivers with the update to 10.6.3. I however thought about the huge performance hit in OpenGL going from Leopard to Snow Leopard (probably same thing). So I decided to check my OpenGL results after installing 10.6.3. However, I didn't check my xBench results before upgrading to 10.6.3. I went and found an old result which shows 67 points for "OpenGL Graphics Test." My new result for "OpenGL Graphics Test" is 111 points. When I check the xBench archives, people with rev "C" MBA's with 10.6.2 all show OpenGL Graphics Test scores in the 60s.
If this is correct, we could all have some big improvements that really show huge effects on the MBA. It should help everyone running Snow Leopard. It should lead to graphics performance gains and lower heat due to graphics demands. Could someone else running 10.6.2 on a 2.13 GHz CPU MBA run an xBench test before the 10.6.3 upgrade? Then upgrade to 10.6.3 and run another xBench test. Then please report back here with your results for OpenGL Graphics Test and hope this result is great for all of us. I believe this would be a big improvement for the original MBA too?
Has anyone ran some tests with the new Snow Leopard Graphics Update Apple just released. I am primarily interested in the performance increases it offers SC2. I am at work and will not be able to install it until late tonight, after which I will post before and after FPS and settings for SC2.

I have been reading that Apple worked with nvidia on OpenCL and that leaves me wondering: will ATI see all the same GPU acceleration of nVidia?
I am looking to buy an iMac in the next few months, and am stuck deciding between the lesser nVidia 130 that can use open CL or the fast ATi that may not...
I checked apple's website and went down to the requirements page. turns out, you require a nvidia or a very very recent ati chip to run openCL. the imac that i own has a ati radeon 2600 pro. what i don't get it, how is a nvidia 9400m more powerful than 2600 from ATI there seems to be no other reason than the fact that apple is being lazy about supporting fairly recent hardware. I only got this imac a couple of years a go and its still pretty new. Does apple expect me to get a new mac?
View 14 Replies View RelatedThe broad industry support Apple is building around OpenCL will help increase the critical mass behind OpenGL, the 2D and 3D graphics language Apple uses extensively in Mac OS X. Since the mid 90s, Microsoft has worked to prevent the adoption of OpenGL as an interoperable industry standard in favor of its own proprietary DirectX portfolio of graphics software and gaming tools.
Don't get me wrong, the (apple-shipped) 8800GT has never given me a moment's worth of problem but it would seem that if there is OpenCL support for the GTX285 in SL next month, it may be worth it to drop the coin and get this card (I'll take it as a business expense).
Has anyone heard or seen something about officially supporting this card? When I looked on Apple's website under SL tech specs, this card isn't listed.
I have a question about how OpenCL works. What programs can utilize the GPU for processing? Does it happen automatically, or does the programming within the application have to state that the GPU can be used? It seems like everyone is excited about OpenCL and GPU acceleration, but how often is it used?

View 2 Replies View Related1) from wwdc latest information, Mac pro user will have only 3 Apple official option OpenCL that is : GeForce 8800 GT, GeForce GT 120 and Radeon 4870
2) but I think GTX285 and FX4800 will support too. (At least final ver. of Snow leopard)
3) Assume you want many core the best selection from 1) & 2) is ATI Radeon 4870 because it has 800 stream processor. GTX 285 have 240
4) Assume you want memory speed the best selection from 1) & 2) is ATI Radeon 4870 again because it GDDR5 (but i can't confidentally confirm it when 4870 have lower memory speed and lower memory bandwidth)

all the OpenCL sample apps from Apple, except for the "hello world" example, are failing.
Can anyone else confirm the same errors on their setup? Just so that I know for sure it is due to the 4870.
I will try putting in my GT120 and see what happens.

Do you think with openCL which one is better. GT 120 or 4870.
View 1 Replies View RelatedWhen Snow Leopard came out last year, Apple made marketing out of the fact of having no new features. Arstechnica wrote a splendid review praising the potential of the two new core technologies it brought, and the perspective performance improvements coming from them.
The "radically new development paradigm" was promising for a slower deployment, but I though it would have been compensated by the advantages in speed and code maintainability.
So I've been periodically sampling the Internet for news on either technology. I expected lists of applications employing them, or some visibility on existing apps directories (like "GCD" or "OCL" tags). In lack of these I then resorted to expecting some random block posts from developers, but even of this I find very little.
The most material you find from Robert Watson, concerning applications at the FreeBSD project!
So what happened to these technologies under the Mac? Did they pass ignored by Mac Developers? If so, why? If not, why do they not reflect publicly the same excitement that the competent Ars masters showed?
Look at [URL] there are some specs about snow leopard and OpenCL (supported video cards)
- NVIDIA Geforce 8600M GT, GeForce 8800 GT, GeForce 8800 GTS, Geforce 9400M, GeForce 9600M GT, GeForce GT 120, GeForce GT 130.
- ATI Radeon 4850, Radeon 4870
Is my GF 8800 GS not supported?
In the tech specs for Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard it only lists the ATI Radeon 4850 and 4870 for supported graphics cards for OpenCL so does this new 4670 support OpenCL? I think it would be pretty silly to have the cheaper iMac with the GeForce 9400M support it but not the next step up with a dedicated card.
