OS X :: How Long To Calculate Size Of External Drive
Dec 12, 2009
I am in the process of migrating files from a Dell laptop running XP to my new iMac. Essentially an easy task as all the files are on an external drive.
I have 2 TB of storage on the iMac and thought it would be a relatively simple task to copy from the external hard drive to the iMac.
After connecting the drive to the iMac I then tried to get the size of a directory on the external drive. I've been waiting about 15 minutes now and it still says "Calculating Size".
Just after doing this I started a copy to move files from the external drive to the iMac. Unfortunately all I see at present is the spinning beach ball.
Just wondering if there's a way of cancelling the copy process or of getting some status as to what is happening?

I forgot the name of a small app that allows to browse a disk and calculate folder sizes in order to clean a disk. I think the icon was a disk with a broom over it.

We use on our Server the OD. About 25 User can ue with their Account every Computer in the Office. Now wo saw the size of the harddrive has very less free space. When we click Apple-I on the users we see it is very low space uses, but this is because all the private folders are blocked. Is their a way to calculate the Open Directory size of every User Account?Â

I am having issues with my iMac 3.06 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3 (Random freezing up). I took it to the local Apple Store and an associate suggested I back up my hard drive before bring it in for diagnosis. He suggested a 2 TB external drive but others have told me that is way too large. I have heard everything from nothing larger than a 500 GB drive and even one self proclaimed computer wizzard says I can get by with a 10 GB thumb drive. What is the right size and if it is a 1 or 2 TB drive, why do I need such a large one.

I have a MacBook from Christmas 2009. I'm very happy with it. I am using an external HD, a Western Digital Passport with 500 GB for my Time Machine backups. The MacBook seems to have a 250GB hard drive, but no firewire connection. So far I have used up about half of my WD Passport external with Time Machine backups. I have about 6500 photos and almost 12GB of iTunes music, and I don't want a catastrophic failure to cause me to lose it all. In addition to the Time Machine backup, I'm considering using Carbon Copy Clone with an additional external hard drive for a complete backup. I'm not very Mac or programming savvy, so I'm looking for an idiot proof method. What do you guys think of CCC, and what size/brand external HD do you recommend? I think CCC has to have an HFS+ formatted drive. I don't want to keep it connected all the time, but I would like to occasionally clone the MacBook harddrive so I always have a fairly current bootable backup.

I wasn't sure if it wouls be a bad idea if I wiped the interal hard drive while I'm booting from a recovery disk, then made a RAID 0 with the internal drive and my FW800 external drive. I'm nearing my max for the internal drive. I have a second FW400 drive backing up with Time Machine. I was hoping to just wipe, make the raid volume, and then restore from the Time Machine backup.Â
I guess even before that, my FW800 is not working in Lion. I reformatted while connected by USB, reset power management, and reset PRAM, but the firewire bus panics and takes out the Time Machine on FW400 as well. Is there a fix for this somewhere that I'm missing? I bought the FW800 drive for the above reason, only to run into a wall trying to make it work. I really don't want to do a RAID 0 with a USB connection.Â
I'm not going to try setting up the RAID 0 until I get the FW800 drive working reliably, but I was hoping to kill two birds with one stone.Â

Whenever I open disk utility, I need to choose between 'calculate image checksum (CRC-32)' and ' calculate image checksum (MD-5)' before I can open disk utility. I always click on either one of them because otherwise disk utility won't open. I am wondering what it means. I called the Apple support about it, but the girl on the phone didn't see it on her computer and couldn't find any info about it.

I'm an independent contractor and keep track of my hours worked & amount paid for the year in numbers, and thus far its working Great! However, I'm attempting to figure out how much my "pay per hour, per day" is, and need am wondering if there is an easier way to do this.
My spreadsheet is setup like the following:
Rows = Days worked
Column F = Time worked
Column G = Amount paid.
So to figure out how much I made "per hour per day", I simply take Column G divided by Column F for each day. However, I'm currently manually entering this script into each row, and given that I worked over 200 days last year(i.e. I manually enter in row 1 =SUM(G1)/(F1); row 2 =SUM(G2)/(F2), etc.
Is there an easier way to do this? Is there a way to sequentially apply scripts, so instead of manually entering G2/F2, it will automatically apply the =Sum G / F's of that row? I'm on numbers 08

I am trying to calculate a route from germany to Spain on Google Maps in Safari Version 5.1.4, but I get stuck with a small window saying (loading) and nothing happens. Also - used to be that, once I enetered the departing or destination city in GM, there would be a list already generated, like in the regular "maps" window. Tried changing the DNS server, then turning it of and back on, nothing worked.Â

What do you think about this battery from Batterygeek?
Specs:
130 Wh
16 or 19 volts output
1.7 lbs
This should give 4.5 times the normal operating time. Should be possible to watch demanding movies for about 7 hours, or do less demanding things for 18 hours.
I'm not sure if the voltage is too high or within limits. The Air magsafe seems to output 14.5 volts.

I've bought three over the last two years, and only one of them has lasted longer than 18 months. I think one of them may have been damaged in a fifteen hour flight, but it still works (albeit too slow to the point that it's unusuable.) My .5 TB monster just died last week, which had almost all of my video files from the last year, totaling 300 GB in data loss. What can I do to avoid such situations? Should I maybe get a 1 TB disk for everyday use to replace my .5 TB disk, then a 2.5 TB disk (or bigger) just for backups? What sort of backup software should I use? (not Time Machine, I'm not interested in backing up my entire computer several times, just my FCP files.) How long do external hard disks last for you?

In windows you can select multiple folders and right click and check the size of all the folders combined, on my mac, when I have multiple folders selected and GET INFO, it opens up a window for each corresponding folder and tells me the size of each folder not how much all are in total....aside from a calculator, is there a way to tell the size combined?

currently using a mid 09 13" Macbook Pro with 4gb of ram. Currently i have a Western Digital 1TB My Book External Hard Drive connected to the usb port. But everytime i try to access the ext hdd, there will be the dreaded beach ball ands takes around 3-5mins before the files can be displayed on finder. I never had this problem when it is plugged into my windows PC. My ext hard disk is currently formated in NTFS, im accessing the files through my mac using NTFS-3G. Could this be a reason?

Just started partitioning my new LaCie 500GB External Drive using OS Leopard and am wondering how long the process usually lasts. My LaCie icon has disappeared from the desktop and my Disk Utility has been saying "Creating Partition Map" for about an hour.Am I on the right track and need to wait, or is does this mean the Disk Utility is frozen, etc.

I'm looking to purchase an external monitor (24" @ 1920x1080) for my MacBook Pro (13.3" @ 1280x800) but want the fonts to be larger on the external monitor (eyes aren't what they used to be). The MBP13 has about 113 pixels/inch whereas the monitor has about 92 pixels/inch so I believe the fonts will indeed be larger. Can anyone with a similar setup confirm this or offer any other useful info.

I have a thumb drive that if i plug it into my MacBook Air in the left usb port, it takes at least 3 minutes before it shows up on my desktop, sometimes MUCH longer. If i plug it into the right USB port, it shows up after a minute. If I plug this same thumb drive into a PC, it shows up within seconds. If i plug a different thumb drive into either USB port on the Air, it shows up within seconds.Â
It's a FAT32 thumb drive, and i've already tried reformatting it and the same stuff happens. I've even had disk utility check it out and nothing's wrong. I'd guess the thumb drive is bad but it works instantly if i plug it into a PC, so guessing that's not it. It's a 10.6 MacBook Air.

I'm going to use a fast 300GB WD VelociRaptor HD in an e-SATA enclosure connected to my MBP via a Merax e-SATA Xpress XpressCard/34 for moving large audio file drum software during live play. I know FAT32 wont work because of it's 4gig file limitation and stability issues (file corruption). I could use the more modern and stable NTFS but that would require using something like NTFS-3G or Paragon to allow OSX to recognize it but I'm worried about slower performance going that route. Would using the OSX native HFS+ format give me the performance and large file size usage I need?

I've got a 2 drive 640GB Black Caviar RAID that I want to set up as just an OS and apps boot drive.
I realize larger block sizes have more through put but waste disk space, and smaller sizes save space but are less efficient.
My user folder (mail, media, itunes, video, docs) will be on a separate drive.
(1) So how do apps and OS files load at boot time and runtime?
(2) If apps like CS4 are large apps does it not make sense to set 256K as the block size?
(3) Or does OSX use many small files thus needing a smaller block size?
