OS X :: How Do I Move Application Windows Between Spaces From The Keyboard
Mar 20, 2009
1) How do I move application windows between spaces from the keyboard? I know I can drag the window to the edge of the window and it'll go to the next space, but I don't like to use the mouse unless it's absolutely required.
2) When I restore a window into the current space, it automatically goes to the space the window originated from. How do I disable this? When I bring a window up from the dock, I want it to open in the space I am currently in.
3) When I open a new application window, it goes to the space where the last application window was located. This is annoying. How do I disable this? I want it to open in the current space, even if I was in another space the last time I had an application open in another space.

I am trying to figure out how to use keyboard shortcuts to move from one Space to another. Online, it says it's ctrl + arrows. But when I do that, either nothing happens, or something related to the particular window I am focusing on happens (if I'm in safari, ctrl + up will take me to the top of the page it is currently displaying).

Is there a way to move an application to another space in Spaces using a keyboard shortcut? For example if anyone is familiar with Compiz or Beryl you can use control+alt+shift+directional key to move an application to a new space without using the mouse or the mode where you can see all the spaces at ounce.

When I enter spaces and move a window or dialogue of an application to a new space, it does not automatically move ALL windows of that app. This is frustrating and I end up having to move five or six windows to get the whole app into the new space. This is not the case with all apps, but it seems like spaces has problems with professional apps like Flash, Pro Toots, Photoshop -- it never moves all the little related dialogues and panels. Anyway to fix this other than to close the app and open it fresh in the new space?

When ever i quit an app, i swap spaces to the next app I have open. Example, quit safari in space 1, auto jump to mail in space 2, quit that, itunes in space 3. Never seen this before and wondering if its some new feature of a utility I got maybe with an update or something.

I am repeatedly running into the problem where as I'm trying to move clips in Logic by clicking and dragging to the right, I accidentally trigger Spaces which thinks I want to move something to the space to the right of the one I am currently in. (Is this making sense - am I explaining it ok?) So instead of moving my clips to the right I end up in another space. This is of course not what I want. I never use spaces since I always just hide apps I'm not using, and navigate back to them with Cmd+Tab. So I wouldn't mind disabling Spaces.

I am using Lion 10.7 , I assigned dreamweaver to desktop1 by choose Options > This Desktop when in desktop1. Then relaunch DW and it correctly opened in desktop 1. Now if i open a file using in finder (which is itself assigned to desktop3) on a file that is default to DW then Dreamweaver moves itself to Desktop3.
I thought the point was that we could assign different applications to different spaces and they would stay that way. Are we saying that if a file is opened from finder its default application will be moved and set up of spaces does not apply ?.

However, I found a problem. I have 16 spaces. But the keyboard shortcuts only allow me to jump to Spaces 1 - 9 with (Ctrl or ^ - (Space No.)) For example, if I were to jump to Space 8 from any space I would press ^ - 8. However, how do I use the shortcut for 10 - 16? I tried pressing ^ - 10. But it simply brings me back to Space 1 as it recognizes the first digit only.

It wasn't until I got my new MPB that I realized how much I use Spaces on a daily basis, when I had my whitebook.
I've set up Spaces on my new uMBP but can't find a way to "view all my spaces." You know, the overview look of spaces, when you can see all your spaces at a glance and click to switch on whichever space you wanna enter.
Well, I can't for the life of my figure out how to set up a keyboard shortcut for this. Back on my whitebook it was always set to F10, but looking at the new layout of buttons on the top row of the keyboard, there are some buttons I'd like to leaver untouched.
F1+F2: Screen brightness controls I'd like to leave untouch since they're obviously useful.
F3: This is Expose right? Giving me a view of all open windows. Well, can't I just do this already by moving 4 fingers downward on the trackpad? If that's the case, which I think it is I wouldn't mind assigning F3 a different shortcut, like Spaces. But how?
F4: Dashboard. On the whitebook it was always F12, guess it'll just take some getting used to.
F5+F6: Backlit keyboard dimmers, i'm fine leaving thouse as is.
F7-F12: Controls media with the back, play/pause, next button which I love & the sound controls which I don't mind.
In System Prefs. in Spaces I'll set "Activate Spaces" to F3 but still F3 will do Expose. I'm not sure how to change this.
& I have no idea what secondary mouse click or middle mouse button is...i'm guessing this has to do with mighty mouse? Me no have one, just using the trackpad..

I switched over to Mac last week (new Macbook with Leopard) and set up the Spaces keyboard shortcuts (control and arrow keys or number keys to switch between spaces), and they worked fine, but now for some reason they don't: when I do control-1, I go back to the 1st space, but it doesn't work for any of my other 3 spaces. Control-left arrow will get me from space 2 to space 1, but the rest of the control-arrow keys don't work. I'm in Firefox 3 now, and Control-2 brings me to the search window that I opened before I started this thread, while control-3 and control-4 just make my mouse disappear until I move it again. What happened to my Spaces shortcuts?

After working for several hours at the computer using Spaces quite heavily the black on-screen Space indicator remains atop and refuses to hide and stays there. Keyboard is entirely blocked apart from the assigned Space-switching keys. Mouse is working fine all the way, tho. Only restarting the dock seems to solve this problem which comes back relatively quickly thereafter. Keyboard strokes are being registered the whole time (via Keyboard Viewer) but the input is being ignored unless the Spaces indicator is gone aka the dock is killed and restarted.

When at home I use a 30" 2560x1600 display and as you can imagine, it has quite a bit of real estate for windows. So when I'm at home I'd prefer to not use Spaces since it doesn't give me any extra. However, at work I use a 24" 1920x1200 and when on the move I use my Macbook Pro's 1280x800 display and on those Spaces is highly beneficial. So is there any way to set up a keyboard shortcut to enable or disable Spaces so I don't have to go uncheck Enable Spaces in System Preferences?

Today I upgraded from mac os 10.5.3 to 10.5.5, and now whenever I play World of Warcraft, I can't use the keyboard shortcuts to switch between spaces. Since I am an AVID spaces use (particularly when playing WoW), I am determined to find an elegant solution to this beyond reinstalling an older version of leopard.
That being said, on Windows I would start tinkering with the registry, seeing if there is a setting that may have been switched for full-screen applications that prevented the use of the shortcuts, etc. And, after doing some digging, I did find some basic files for Spaces (Resources, XML .plists, etc), but couldn't find anything like the registry where the settings are laid out.is there such a thing? If so, how do I find/tinker with it?
I realize that you're encouraged NEVER to mess w/system settings blah blah etc... I've got everything backed up on the machine and could format/reinstall without any issues.

I have been having a problem where randomly after switching a space the little graphic that pops up to show which space you're switching to gets stuck on screen, though you are still able to switch spaces. Also, the keyboard ceases to work as well. The only fix I've found is fast user switching to the login window and back to my account. I'm not able to trigger the problem, and it definitely doesn't happen everytime I switch spaces, but its been happening multiple times per day and is a pretty big nuisance. Also unrelated question: In my itunes using column view whenever I select an artist it snaps back to the top of the list, though still selecting the artist. Its a weird bug, anyone else having this happen?

I glanced over the forums but didn't find any similar issues. Basically, Expose, Spotlight and spaces won't respond to any keyboard shortcuts (ie. Pressing F12 doesn't bring up the Dashboard, pressing Fn+F8, F9, F10 doesn't work, F11 won't hide all the windows, Command+Space bar won't invoke the Spotlight search bar, etc). what's really interesting about it is, all of these features are apparently working correctly (ie. Clicking directly on the Spotlight icon will bring up the search bar, using an active corner will perform its Expose function, etc).

I'm new to mac I just moved to my mac mini 2 months ago. I move for the sole reason of using the Adobe CS4. However, I have now filled up my 80gb hard drive (mac mini) and want to move some files around. I have a large 1TB drive foe my mac (not a time machine a storage drive) and I was wondering if I could move the adobe applications from the application folder to a folder on the drive. I know on windows this would not be possible unless you uninstall and reinstall on the other drive. I have heard rumor that a application on a mac is the single e file in the application folder. Is moving the programs possible? Dose it depend on the programs I'm trying to move (cs4 master collection in my case)? If so is there any special "thing" I need to do?

I've played extensively with Spaces. Today I had 4 Spaces, with multiple Safari windows and multiple TextEdit windows open in Space #1 and in Space #3. I moved back an forth quite a bit, but then spent some time opening and closing windows only in Space #1, finally closing all Safari and TextEdit windows there.
When I pressed F8, Space #3 had no windows open! In the Dock, Safari and TextEdit were active. If I clicked either of them in the Dock, I'd switch to that application's menus and see my windows from Space #3 listed in the "Windows" menu, but the window would not actually appear anywhere in any Space if I chose it from the Windows menu.
The same with control-clicking in the Dock; the windows were listed, but would not display.
The windows for a separate application I had open only in Space #3 were also gone. I hadn't used them in any other Space.
I tried control-click-Quit on TextEdit in the Dock, knowing that I should get a "Do you want to save the changes?" prompt. It played the alert sound but showed me no TextEdit window or prompt. I couldn't view my window, save it, or Quit without saving!
There seemed to be no clean way out, until I tried collapsing all windows into Space #1 (by pressing F8 and then C) and then disabling Spaces in System Preferences. Instantly, my missing Safari and TextEdit windows reappeared in Space #1. My windows from the other application are back too.
I re-enabled Spaces and everything seems back to normal.

When i updated from Lion to Mountain Lion I had my applications in two separate folders on the same Hardisk. One for my apps from Apple, and one for my downloaded apps. Now I want to move my downloaded apps back into the original application folder, but they just copies instead. Earlier i have just CMD dragged the application, but now, in mountain lion, this seems not to work anymore.

I use Adium for two reasons:
1. My work clients are scattered across AIM, Yahoo, and MSN, so it's nice to have one application that can communicate with all of them.
2. I like being able to customize the look and feel of the interface
That being said, lately I've become very frustrated because I can't seem to get Adium to play nicely with Leopard's Spaces. I have Adium set (both in Spaces and in Adium) to be visible on all spaces. Yet if a chat is opened, for instance, in Space 3 and mid-chat I decide to switch to Space 4, the chat window doesn't come along for the ride. Likewise, if during a lull in the chat, I switch between several different spaces and lose track of where the chat window was last seen, I can't locate it by hitting F8 and showing all spaces. The chat window doesn't appear on any of them. The only way I can find the chat window is by methodically going to each space until I discover the truant.

I just got my macbook and I am completely new to it. When I "drag" to application folder to install something does it completely move that file to that folder or does it make a copy of it. Because I don't want wasted space having the same file on my HDD. Can I delete the original spot of the filer without messing things up?

I've started to use Spaces to manage multiple full screen apps and windows but I'm having problems, especially with the Finder. It seems to make arbitrary choices when opening new windows, often placing new windows floating over fullscreen without switching spaces or opening them in other spaces underneath fullscreen apps so I can't find them. Sometimes it switches to a clean Space whist the window opens in a different Space altogether. I'm running Adobe software- CC '14 applications so I don't know if this causing the problems but most of the issues seem to be with the finder and apps that actually run fullscreenBP Â
I'm running a MBP with an external monitor- it's a one monitor set up, not dual so it shouldn't be causing the issues I'm having. I like the idea of spaces running fullscreen apps and windows- the tech has a lot of potential but seems crude and irrational presently.

I have an annoying problem with application switching since I have upgraded to Mac OS Lion from Snow Leopard. Now switching between applications doesn't work as good as it was in Snow Leopard.
Right now I have Finder and Xcode opened. Xcode is assigned to only one specific Desktop and Finder is assigned to None. And when I am in Xcode for example and use Cmd-Tab to switch to Finder, it deactivates my current window, but doesn't move to the space with Finder or makes Finder active. Then, I press Cmd-Tab again, and it makes Finder active (My top panel controls show Finder now) but I still stay in the space with Xcode. And further switching doesn't do anything. So I then need to manually to click on the Finder icon in the Dock. And the same is vice versa when switching from Finder to Xcode.Â
If I switch by clicking the Finder Dock icon it then works in two steps: first time it deactivates current window, and after second click it moves to Finder Desktop and makes Finder active.Â
Another issue is with Safari when I am in Fullscreen mode and have also Activity window opened. If I am in Finder and switch with Cmd-Tab to Safari, it just shows me the Activity window in the same Desktop no matter how many times I Cmd-Tab. To switch to Main Safari window I need to click on the Dock icon.If I switch only by clicking the Dock icon, then I again need to click it twice.Â
Option for moving to space with selected application in Preference Pane is switched on and Automatically rearrangement of last used applications as well.Â

I have set up my mom with an older Macbook Pro of mine to save her from the evils of the PC. I set up two users, one for her and one for me; hers is uber simple (big icons, only the essentials in the doc) mine is crazy complicated. We share apps, of course, which was fine until I realized she is going to want to download Mah Jongg game apps and the like from the App Store, and I would LOVE it if I didn't have to have all that cluttering up the root Applications folder. I already tried to move one app from root to her user's Applications folder and all that moved was an alias, the app stayed at root. So how does one move these things? Is there a way via the finder? Can I use terminal.

Last night, I was having issues with the illuminated keyboard. It would flicker on and off, but when I restarted the machine, I had no issues. This morning I wake up and press the F6 key to brighten it up and see of its working, and the levels wont move at all, and all i get is the O with the through it. something I did possibly? Im in Greece right now, so its going to be hard to get it to an Apple store. The only time I will be able to do that is when my Aunt goes back to NY. She can take it there for me and ship it back.

When a dialog opens up (see screen shot). How do I move from left to right so I don't have to move my mouse? Just the keyboard. In windows it is tab. I have tried tab, shift+tab, cmd+tab, option+tab, arrows up/down/left/right etc. I have looked at the following site for keyboard shortcuts: [URL] I know it is going to be something right under my nose but I can't find it...

I've been looking around for quite some time and cannot find a solution for my annoying problem: I cannot keep the 'Tab to move keyboard focus between: All controls' to stick. I am able to change the keyboard setting so that the Tab key changes keyboard focus through settings -> keyboard -> keyboard shortcuts -> full keyboard access and the simple control+F7 until I log out, reboot or power cycle. Â
I have reset all of my keyboard settings to default and I have gone so far as to create a new user with admin priviledges but the problem persists.
