OS X :: How Durable MacBooks Really Are
Apr 14, 2009
How durable are the aluminum macbooks? I am gonna start riding a bike to work as the weather gets better and wondered if having it jumping around in my backpack when I go over bumps or off curbs is going to do any damage to my new macbook?

Apple claims the aluminum case is durable. Which, I can see why they would say that. But, I've had my MBP for about a month, and it's already got a dent on it. And I take care of this baby as if it was a diamond. Plus, the pads on the bottom aren't even that durable. They are already wearing out.

Just wondering why they can't or are not putting the 16 GB or 32 GB ram in any Macs since they put it in ipods and iPhones? I know that Snow Leopard can support up to what like 16 Terrabytes?

I know that there are topics asking what is going to be in the next Mac upgrade all the time, but what I wanted to ask you is more about Steve's "The next generation of MacBooks" quote.
It seems that the Back to the Mac philosophy will not apply just to the Air but will go further on the other laptops series.
I definetely see the HDD disappear from the next gen of MacBooks to give space to the SSD cards.
So far all the MacBook can get up to 500GB HDD and the Pros have also the option up to 512GB SDD.
However even if this is quite predictable I would like to know your opinion on another matter: DVDs.
Will Apple gamble on removing the DVD drive or this could be too early?

It's been one year now that I am saving money for a MacBook. Yesterday was my birthday and I finally got enough money to buy myself a brand new Aluminum MacBook 2.4 Ghz (stock configuration) for school/home.I am REALLY excited. I just can't wait to order it online with the student discount !!!But before buying, I was just wondering : when will iLife '09 be preinstalled on the Aluminum MacBooks when you buy it online ? Is it the day they release iLife '09 a.k.a. at the end of January ? I know that you can buy iLife '09 for about 10 bucks after buying a new Mac right now, but I think I can wait until it is preinstalled on new Macs, so I wanted to know if any of you knew when it's gonna happen.

My old man and I bought 2.4 ghz alu macbooks at the same time. We both have 2gb of ram and would both like to upgrade to 4.
Would it be possible to purchase one set of crucial sticks and then simply take the 2gb original ram from his unit and replace it into mine, utilizing both matched crucial sticks in his computer? Giving us both 4gb.
The MB's were both purchased on the same date and are identical in spec.

i bought my macbook 13 inch 2.0 core 2 duo one's about 4 month before they refreshed the line and expanded the ram and slapped pro behind it. now am hearing about the whole snow leopard not running in 64 bit at boot up on the macbooks. i know that the chip is design for 64 bit os'es and i know that the hack with 6 and the 4 key won't work on my computer. but am wondering if the macbook line will ever be able to run mac os x in 64 bit. i mean isn't 4 gb or ram the minimum you need . i know that's how it was on window 7 to run it in 64 bit. i was just thinking now i know why they upgraded the macbook line right before snow leopard. one thing i have noticed is that all the apps that are wrote for 64 bit load much quicker then 32 bit apps.so that got me thinking if apple will ever let snow leopard or above run in 64-bit on the non pro macbook? and if it could be done though an upgrade though software update or though the operating system ? what are you guys/girls thoughts on it?

So we've all read people's stories about dropping macbooks and the consequences, hrrible or otherwise. None of those stories have covered what happened to me, though, so I'm looking for help here.
I dropped my macbook from a height of around six feet. Impressive, especially since there's no physical damage- at least externally. However, whenever I turn it on or wake it up, it makes a sort of choking mechanical sound, like the normal one only louder and more stuttering. It's also the exact same noise every time. This hasn't affected anything except the disc drive, which I can no longer get discs into without them getting hideously scratched. Any ideas on what might have happened/what I can do about it/how mch repairs would be?

Both my wife and I have MacBooks. Mine is the primary with an HP 3100 All-in-one connected via USB to it. I can print with no problem. I have tried everything possible to connect and allow my wife to print from her MacBook, but everytime she goes to print the job stays in the print queue with the notification 'Holding (Authentification Required) next to it. We both connect to the internet via WiFi, same codes, etc.
Driving me loco. Everything with Macs is just supposed 'to work'. It's just this one final step.

I have three macbooks, one of them is a MacBook pro. I can connect by using a computer to computer network no problem but problems arise when I want to connect them through my home network. I have set up file sharing on all of the laptops. I have tried using Go => Connect to server, then afp://ip address, nothing. When I click on network in finder, nothing turns up. Do I need to open up ports on my router? What is stopping the macs seeing each other?

Do the current MacBooks, both the white polycarbonate w/NVIDIA GeForce 9400M and the aluminum (Unibody) use the same or different LCD panels?I know that the white MacBook has fluorescent back lights for the display, whereas the aluminum MacBook has LED back lights. I also know that the white MacBook has a glossy LCD display, whereas the aluminum MacBook has an even glossier glass panel over the LCD display.I understand that both MacBook Air and MacBook Pro models use better LCD display panels, but I'm not in the market for either so that's a moot point. Since I've read conflicting reports as to whether one MacBook display is better or worse than the other what I'd like to know is if the physical LCD panel used in both varieties of MacBook is the same or different?
