OS X :: Fastest Way To Unrar Multiple Files?
Jan 17, 2010
Looking for something that can expand all rars in one click. Like you highlight all the folders and expand them into one folder so that they can be unrared easily? Does something like this exist? Right now i'm using rar expander and i have to select each file manually and it takes forever!

My brother and I share folders and various file types through ichat at the moment, but it's so slow, we are both on pretty fast networks (35/35MB and 50/8MB) I can mount a folder of his on my mac (we are in seperate towns) by putting our apple ID's into the apple extreme section (I think back to my mac) and we can share files that way, but I am confused as to why the transfer rates are so slow, we get at best 32KBs. Any recommendations for a faster file transfer method between remote macs.

Can I merge multiple files, and multiple file types, into a single PDF with my MacBook Pro?, Can I merger multiple files, and multiple file types, into a single PDF with my MacBook Pro?
I need to combine word docs, .jpgs, .PDFs, .pptx files from multiple sources into a single PDF. In the past I've used software such as Nuance but I'm wondering if there's something in the MacBook Pro OS or applications that support this function.
Info:
Mac Pro, iOS 5.1.1

I have set up an automator service that TAR's a folder into an archive for me and it works quite nicely. Idealy however, I would like to be able to highlight several folders, right click and have automator tar each folder into it's own TAR archive, but do it one by one.
[Code]...
I'm not 100% sure so I guess it would be a good time to verify, is there a problem with having the system try to TAR multiple folders at one time? If it is not a problem then I guess this discussion itself is pointless and I can simple right click on each folder and select "TAR Folder" and just wait until they're all finished. I would think that it would be ideal for the system to do each one individually and not try to do them all at one time.

I am attempting to decompress a .rar file but it is divided into, count them, 60 parts. Each one goes part 01.rar and so on. Is there an easier way to decompress this rather than waiting for each one individually?

I am trying to sort my files by date and type. I can sort by Modified Date and File Type. Every time I sort by file type, the files are listed alphabetically within their folder type lists. This is not what I want. I want to see all the .rar files in chronological order
As I recall from Windows, I can sort by Modified Date, then Type, and the files will be listed by type, and then secondarily sorted by Date. Is there a way to do this on the Mac?
I'm on 10.6.5

I feel dumb asking this, but I'm trying to create an Automator workflow to rename multiple picture files and once and I've used this tutorial... The problem is that when I right-click my files or hit "control" and click the files I want to use I don't get an option that says "more" (see second picture of tutorial) so I can get the files into Automator. In place of "more" at the bottom of the Contextual menu I have an option that says "Set Desktop Picture". How can I get my files into Automator??

I have about 60 gigs of music. Each file is named "artistname - song name". How can I take the artist name out of all of them without timing my clicking to rename them. Also, I found that quite a few cds are actually named like "artist.name.song.name" for some reason. Now windows lets me push the tab key and will let me keep going without using the mouse which is way less time consuming. Is there a way I can do that on a Mac? Will automator work for what I am doing?

aaa.zip
bbb.zip
ccc.zip
ddd.zip
How do I decompress all of them to the same folder? On windows and winrar, you just select all of them, right click and choose decompress to aaa.
How can I do the same with a Mac? I don't mind having to use another software, except that Stuffit, the Unarchiver and Springy are all useless as they don't integrate with the finder context menu nor do they have that option anywhere.

I would like to transfer my iTunes library to my phone to use as a secondary/backup iPod. The problem is that I have a lot of music, and iTunes organizes the music by putting music in separate folders via artist, and then more separate folders by album. This means there is no easy way to transfer all of my music over. I'd have to manually click on every folder, and copy songs one by one, which would take a super long time.
Is there a way to like select my iTunes Music folder and be able to get all of my music?

I'm looking for a Windows program to convert a list of MP3 files into one m4b file that has usable chapters. I found a program merge the files together and convert, but it doesn't keep the mp3 files as "chapters". It just lumps them all together. Trying to load my iPod up with all sorts of audio books.

I'm going to resurrect a thread that was started by Tilamook last year. It was was hijacked or sidetracked and I want to get it back on track, cuz it's a great question.

Some of the hard drives will not always be mounted, but I will still want to see the contents the last time they were mounted

I want to select pictures 1-15 to put in a different folder. I'd click pic1, hold shift, then click on pic15. That selects all the files in between as well. How do I go about doing this same thing in OS X? I've tried just about every combination of the shift, control, option, and apple key with clicking but nothing works.

I can't figure out how to highlight and move multiple files from my local hard drive to an external drive. Is this simply not possible with Apple's OS? Seems too ridiculous for that to be the case. I can move individual files by Command+dragging the file, but it won't let me do that with multiple files.
I can move the parent folder, with the contents, but that's not what I want to do, since I only want some of the files within it. What I've been doing so far is highlighting and copying the multiple files and then deleting the originals afterwards. But this is a major time waster for me. This must be possible, how could they make an OS that doesn't allow this?

In windows I can use the control key+select and shift+select to select items say, 5-15 or select multiple individual files. In OS X shift+select and cmd+select do the same thing. They let me choose multiple individual files but I can't figure out how to choose a series of files like choosing 5-15. I realize I can drag my mouse over it and click a few files I don't want with shift+select but it's just annoying me that I can't find the command for what I want to do. From the search I did I got the impression that shift+select and cmd+select are supposed to do different things but for me the don't. Did I miss something?

I have imported my DVD collection into my hard drive so I can have the entire TV series on my Mac without swapping DVDs all the time (I want to access them via Front Row). Currently the format is AVI and cannot be imported into iTunes. I can however open the movie in quicktime, save as a reference file, then import into iTunes. However, this would take me hours and hours with my video library. If I convert them to *.mov format, it would also take hours and hours. I know there's a program called videodrive that will import them all, but I'd like to buy it only as a last resort. Surely there must be a way to do it via Automator or something?

Is there an apple script or something that can change icons automatically between files? I have a small movie library, which I created icon files for (with a frame from the movie). I just have to "get info" on each movie individually, and copy the image icon over the movie's generic icon. I can't use poster frames in iTunes/Quicktime because they're not all quicktime compatible, and I didn't want to re-encode everything.
I'm just wondering if it is simple to write a script that will ask for an item (the image), copy it's Icon, then ask for a second item (the movie) and paste the icon to that. If it is possible, the process would go a little faster both now, and for any others I do in the future.
