View 5 RepliesI am trying to copy 2000 or so files (jpg images) from the hard drive of my imac running show leopard to a sd card. I keep getting the item "filename.jpg" can't be copied because there isn't enough free space. I can go back and copy smaller groups of files and then the file that I get the error on. But even coping 10 files I run into the error on certain files but I can copy all the other files in the selection and then the file that gave the error without a problem. All the files were exported from iPhoto resized to fit a digital photo frame I bought for a christmas present. Looking for a way to get the files to the sd card without coping small batches.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI was transferring images from my Transend 32 GB memory card when halfway through something happened and only half the images copied properly. The other half are greyed out, I cannot view the thumbnail and when I try to do anything with it it says "one or more of the items in "IMG_9203.CR2" can't be changed because they are in use. The memory card is empty now and I can't figure out how to get back my images!

The external disk is a 1 TB Iomega EGO Portable Hard Drive Mac Edition connected with 2 USB connection to my Mac Book Air with MacOS 10.7.4. I have format the disk in MacOS extended. I have tried to copy file from my internal disk to the external disk & it works correctly.

Skipping all the fine details, my MBP is having insane freezing issues and I need to reinstall Lion ASAP. But I also need to backup my files since I haven't been able to backup in a month. Yet whenever I try to backup, I'm told: The backup was not performed because an error occurred while copying files to the backup disk. While Trying to repair my external drive thinking it was the problem initially, I verified and repaired that disc and still had the problem. I tried verifying/repairing my permissions for my internal drive, and I get these amounts of errors: [URL]. No idea what these mean.
View 12 Replies View RelatedThis error probably indicates a hardware problem or some system malfunction. I usually try to find out what exactly went wrong to take measures to avoid the repetition of the same problem. Exchanging the HD and restoring the sytem may be the quicker solution, but I would miss an opportunity to reconfigure my system to make it more robust.Â
The system in question is a MacMini (Model A1347) with Os-X-Server 10.6.7. and 2 physical HDs: HD1 has 2 Partitions, the smaller for the server OS, the larger for the Shares (We use the MacMini only as a file server). HD2 is not used (was kept in reserve for cases like this). Â
That there may be a problem manifested itself first when the mounting of the shares on HD1 became suddenly slow (within 2-3 days) and eventually failed. I first tried to copy all the files from the shares on HD1 to HD2 before attempting any repair actions. Most of the files copied properly but a few failed with error (-36). Those few can be restored from backups, so there is no data loss. Remains the question, what went wrong? Â
It may be pure coincidence but just before the File-Server failed there was an attempt to upgrade a 3rd party software on one of the clients (17'' MacBook Pro / OS X 10.6.8) to a newer version. Could be that new version was part of the problem because the data files of this 3rd party software are stored on one of the shares on HD1 and the data file format has been changed between the versions. For obvious reasons I need to make sure that this data file conversion was not the cause of the problem?
1) first check the HD1 with a different tool than DiskUtility (It thinks the HD1 is in perfect shape), TechTool Pro or DiskWarrier comes to my mind, any reason to prefer one over the other?Â
2) Hopefully those tools can reliably test whether the HD1 is damaged or not. If it is the former the HD1 replacement option is the way to go and there is no more reason the 3rd party software may have been involved. However if HD1 is not damaged I'm left with the uncertainty of what exactly lead to the problem..?Â
3) Is there any check I should do before I just re-format the HD and re-install the OS and switch back to an earlier version of the 3rd party software to be on the safe side? Â

I backed up all my data onto a couple of DVDs before formatting and upgrading my ststem but now, when trying to copy this data back I am getting the error message. The Finder can't complete the operation because some data in "filenamehere" can't be read or written. (Error code -36). I have looked for ages to try and find a solution for this, but there does not seem to be one when copying from a DVD.

The drive is formatted in mac os x extended journaled. I do not know what else to do because I can't copy them using my PC obviously, I don't want to reformat the drive because I will lose all my movies. I tried copying off the drive onto another external in FAT32 but that didn't work either and to top it off, I can't fit all the movies onto my macbook.

I've never heard of this happening before, except for with improperly unmounted external drives. I have run disk utility and verified that there are no problems with either drive.
Why does my mac stop downloading files, copying to clipboard, saving files to desktop, etc?
iMac g5 1.9 ghz 17" running 10.5.8. Had a hard drive crash and bought a new one. Loaded new OS leapord. Everything works fine at first, but after the computer has been on for a while, it will stop downlading files, disk verify doesn't work. I can't copy and paste stuff. It seems as if the hard drive is full, but I have only used 32GB of 300GB.
When I restart, it works again, then slowly not. Is it an overheating issue? How do I know if my fan is running? Is it a bad hard drive I put in it? Bought it new with three year waranty.
On several separate occasions, one of our users has had trouble with files "disappearing."

Could anyone help explain why this is happening or how to prevent it?
I am running 10.6.2 in Late 2008 Alu UMB. I have a Transcend 500 gig external, with NTFS partition of 250 gig. This NTFS partition has .dmg files. Among then, only a few dmg files show up with the usual dmg icon, everything else show up as blank icons, with .dmg extension, as if it were an unknown or unrecognised file. In file info the preview shown is the usual dmg icon and the file size is also right. When i double click, the dmg doesnt mount, infact nothing happens, and when i try to copy it to my internal hard drive, It says "One or more items in xxx.dmg can't be changed because they are in use". So am not able to use those dmg files.
Note: I have enabled native read/write for NTFS by editing the /etc/fstab.
I am trying to copy the iPhoto library to my newly installed NAS drive. I have 2 libraries (3.6gb and 16.8gb). The smaller one copied across no problem but when copying the second I get an error 36 after it has copied 30mb of data.
I have tried all avenues:
- Restarted iPhoto holding down alt and opt and repairing permissions.
- Rebuilt library using iPhoto Library Manager
But I still get the same message. I have backed up the whole Mac using Superduper to a small external drive and that works fine. Part of the reason I bought the NAS drive was to back up photos, and now it doesn't work!
Also, I do when checking Console I get the following message regularly:

My question is, when I get the MacBook, how can I copy all my files from my current Windows-based external HDD, onto the MacBook?
I am mostly concerned in saving my pictures and songs if it makes a difference.
I just got a MacBook and I'm wondering how to see transfer speeds when copying files. In vista you simply clicked more information and it showed it.
View 1 Replies View RelatedWhen backing up files to an external drive, I end up overwriting the older versions of files that were previously backed up. Is there a way to copy files from one place to another, but just have files that have been changed to update?
Kind of like how Time Machine or Drop Box works. It just senses changed files and overwrites those, but doesn't recopy unchanged files.
I am trying to move some files from an x86 machine to a ppc machine. Both are running Mac OS X 10.4 The files have some extended attributes set for them.
Hence, I used the tar utlity to create an archive and then moved the archive.
However, the file data is moved correctly but all the extended attributes are lost Why is this?
I learnt that all extended attributes are stored in the resource fork.
Both the machines have the HFS+ filesystem.
Hence, even the resource forks must get copied right?
I have 13 files totalling about 4.5GB on my new MBP that I've tried to copy over the network to my Windows PC. The actual copy process itself indicates that all 4.5GB of data has been copied across, but on the Windows PC only 6 of the 13 files actually appear, so somewhere in the process the other 7 files have been 'lost'. Has anyone got any idea what could be going on here and how and where the other files have vanished to even though the MBP indicates the data has been copied over?

View 5 Replies View RelatedI just did a clean install of the mac and I'm noticing it is extremely slow at copying files back from an External HDD. It is on USB 2.0 connection, and still going maybe 10MB/minute. This is the speed I'd expect from a 1.0 connection. I've checked the wires, everything is connected. I thought maybe I'd speed it up by using an External DVD drive to copy the 20GB music library back from the DVDs rather than the external -- but the external DVD drive showed the same slow speed. The drive didn't even seem to spin up to read faster (like it normally would, it reads/writes quicker than the slot drive on the imac).
It just ran as slow as possible, with the same slow transfer rate. I've been going for a couple hours or more now, and only have 4GB of 16 copied over. I'm guessing there could be a reason for this that I'm missing. It's a fresh install, all updates installed on this Tiger 10.4.11 OS X. External is formatted HFS+ and the iTunes library does not contain any single file over 4 GB, or even close to 1GB. (just music/library files). There has been no problem with the media before.
I'm having a problem with my Mid 2007 iMac. Some files copying from a DVD (Logic Express 9 Demo Content), cause my iMac to restart. I know the files are fine as I can copy from another mac. I've had this problem twice before since I've had my mac (Oct 2007), but it was in reverse (trying to burn to a DVD). Everything else works fine copying to and from the drive. I want to ring Applecare, but I can imagine that they will say don't worry about it, since its only them files, and everything else can copy fine.
I've tried all the basic stuff:
-checking a new account
-permissions
-pram
-and the smc

Is there a GB limit you can copy at one time, or maximum number of files? FYI, my MBP locked up while it was "preparing to copy." It was stuck on just over the 40,000th file (was the large number of files the problem?).
