OS X :: Cursor Jumps And Clicks Randomly
Jun 28, 2010
My problem is that about every 15-20 minutes my cursor will start jumping around wildly and click randomly for a good 30 seconds then stop. Then I will get control of it again for about 5 seconds and it will just stop or give me trouble and then go back to the same thing. This goes on for a good couple minutes till the rainbow wheel of death comes and stays for a bit then I'm back to being okay. This happens repeatedly while I am on my computer. Which is a Macbook Pro. It happened mostly when I am on firefox which I deleted because it seemed to be the source of it for a while, but it would continue happening even after I got rid of it. I cleared my hard drive to see if that would help, but still nothing.

The trackpad/cursor on my Macbook Pro vs10.6.8 acts stangely. Sometime the cursor jumps around randomly and can't get any response from the trackpad. The condition is getting worse and has about made the trackpad useless. I have tried using as wireless mouse and have had no problems whatsoever, which leads me to believe the problem is in fact in the trackpad/cursor; either the hardware or softeare associated with same.

I have a Macbook All of a sudden this morning my cursor does not actually select what I hover over. For example: to creat a new tab in my browser, I can't actually click on the "+" symbol to get a new untitled tab, I have to click about 1/4" to the right of the "+" sign to select it. This occurs with everything -- typing into text boxes, clicking "compose" to write a new email in Gmail -- everything! This is really annoying, it occurs when I click the mouse button and also when I tap on the track pad. (Clicking through this paragraph to edit this question has been a nightmare!

While I'm moving my cursor (seemingly on the desktop or some software) it will occasionally jump to one of the corners of my monitor. Otherwise it seemingly is unaffected. I just have to drag it back.
I'm guessing it's something in my preferences but I don't know what.

Cursor is driving me crazy jumping all over screen, to middle of sentences, deleting words and sometimes deleting entire sentences when I hit enter.

my iMac has this glitch, the cursor jumps or teleports across screen every second. I move it and then it jumps again, always jumps to the same place, same exact pixel everytime. I try to move the cursor quickly (to open safary or hit stand by) but no matter where the pointer is across the 27" screen, it teleports like a clock.Â
I changed batteries on the trackpad and magic mouse and it didn't work. I turned mouse off, left trackpad on and it didn't work. I tried using a wired mouse and it didn't work. this is obviously not related to the input device.Â
I would like to restore the input driver with time-machine but I have no idea where the drivers reside in the machine. I also have no idea how to roll-back or reinstall such drivers on a Mac.Â
this is not the jittery, erratic, jumpy bug. When this glitch is triggered and I have absolutely no clue how or why, sometimes it starts 1 minute after reboot, sometimes 30 minutes; when it is triggered it starts to teleport every second, the arrow jumps to the same spot. it's unbearable since it renders the machine useless. I have to press the power button to send it to sleep, resume and then the glitch is gone, only to come back 5 or 30 minutes afterwards.Â
Finally, this thing happened last year in november. I wasn't able to solve it back then so I had to reinstall the whole OS Lion, that meant waiting 6 hours for it to download from the appStore (because Apple doesn't allow me to keep a copy LION on my system). I think that's plain silly since it's obviously a very mundane (but annoying) glitch and there's got to be a workarround that doesn't require system restore.

In theory, that sounds nice - just point and it clocks itself - but it's not great. Links inadvertently activated, pages opened while I'm still reading the last one. It's a hassle. I went toTrackPad preferences and slowed the tracking speed, but it still does it. I'm using Mavericks. Is there a way to turn this feature off?Â

Ok, so ive had this problem for a few months now and it has led me to the point where my mac was in storage and i havent touched it in a month or two. What happens is no matter what i am doing my mouse will move around the screen clicking randomly and basically doing whatever it wants. i have looked into the problem and other people have similiar issues but not the same. i can be across the room from my mac with the screen on, and the mouse will still move around and click and open countless folders even though no one at all is even near the computer. today when i took the mac out to see if there was a software update available (which there was) the mouse was not moving around or jumping at all througout the entire update. After the update it is now yet again jumpin around and clicking wherever it wants. Also its not just once in a while it is 24/7 it has made my mac unable to be used because you cant really control the mouse for more than a second at a time. my whole screen is now full of untitled folders..

Has anyone experienced this? After doing a thread search I could only find people talking about cracks in the palmrest, which I have thankfully -not- experienced.
Basically the way I'd naturally rest my palms while I type is making for a really annoying experience. Say I'm typing anything (a URL, an IM, etc) and my palms will make a silent "click" happen and before I know it I've accidentally deleted everything I just typed or I've changed windows and made something happen unintended. I'm holding my palms in the air right now as I type.

I have bought 2 new 27" iMacs running Mavericks. I've got two problems. When opening, changing and saving JPGs in Photoshop Elements 6, the thumbnail disappears and only a generic JPG icon shows. This happens randomly. I read that PSE6 is OK on Mavericks. I don't see the problem with GIMP or Lightzone, but I would like to be able to use PSE. Second, my mouse cursor randomly disappears from the screen from time to time.

My mid 2013 MBP, 2.8 GHz Intel Core i7 with 16Gb 1600 Mhz DDR with a 500 GB SSD running Mavericks 10.9.3 has, since upgrade to Mavericks, developed a tick. It will occasionally and erratically (some days nothing, sometimes once a day, sometimes twice or more) go black with cursor arrow visible and responsive. (Responsive=it's visible and moves as expected in response to trackpad) The screen comes back after 30-40 seconds or so, but not in response to any keypress or mouse movement that I can detect a pattern for. It just sits there, while I hit escape, spacebar, shift, cmd-option-esc, cmd-option-tab, mouse around, whatever, then comes back. System is fine, don't even get the beach ball. So it's a minor annoyance, except when I'm presenting to a roomful of people who are waiting for my machine to wake up, and that 30 seconds can be FOREVER. Which has happened twice now. When I'm connected to an external screen via thunderbolt that screen is black as well.Â
tried the fix of resetting SMC as well as Safe Mode boot to complete any unfinished OS updates. But the symptom is different, and those fixes haven't worked. I've never had a bad reboot, this condition just seems to pop up without apparent rhyme or reason. It's so infrequent and unpredictable that I despair how long it will take me to run bare and cycle through restoring background apps.

My mid-2014 15" Macbook Pro randomly "loses" its retina display at the top menu (becomes pixel-y), where the battery, sound, and wifi logos are (on the top right side of the screen). A restart fixes the issue, but I want to know if this is an issue that can be fixed?Â

My new Mac Pro is causing me a lot of grief lately. Using safari or firefox, when trying to stream video, the cpu load on the system jumps to 12 or 13 % on average, sometimes up to 20%. Things get extremely choppy, and it beachballs occasionally. Just using the secondary scroll wheel on my logitech MX revolution to bring up the dashboard makes it jump to around 5%. These are tasks my little crummy old laptop handles just fine (well not the dashboard, its a windows laptop). I have ten gigs of ram, but two of my sticks are having massive ECC errors (multiple thousands) and switch between being recognized as 2gig to 1gig sticks. I got the memory from OWC and am getting it replaced though. In any case, would the faulty memory cause this much of an increase in cpu load for something as trivial and streaming low-def video? Or should I call AppleCare because something more serious may be a problem? It just doesnt seem normal for a computer where everyone says that no one normally even utilizes all the power of to be struggling with such nominal tasks.

I've been having a problem with my wired mouse. Ever since I installed Snow Leopard I have noticed the mouse making small jumping movements when I move it at a medium and slow speed
I was using a G5 Laser mouse and found it would jump around when I was moving it diagonally. It would make little jumps here and there randomally as i moved it diagonally, but it didn't happen when I moved the mouse vertically or horizontally.
I eventually got fed up and bought a Razer DeathAdder Mac Edition, but I still have the same problem. I thought it might be the mousepad, so I got a new one and it helped a little, but the mouse still jumps when I move it diagonally. It is tolerable for day to day tasks (although a little annoying) but when I am editing photos it can be really frustrating.
I have tried removing the Razer software but that didn't work. I installed USB Overdrive and Steermouse, but neither fix the problem.
These are not wireless mouses, both are wired, and have an advertised 1800DPI.

Strange thing here. As far as I can remember, CMD+N always openend a new finder window. Since a few days, when I use the combination CMD+N the finder jumps to my "username". Only then will CMD+N open a new window.
This is kinda annoying. How do I make CMD+N just open a new window, no matter in what folder I am?

I have a new UMBP 15" and just recently, without changing anything it seems. The pointer has serious issues moving around on the screen, especially in slow operation/movements it will jerk around and not stay where its supposed to be. If I just hold my finger in one place it will jump around very noticeably, inches even. Even clicking sometimes takes a few hard taps when just barely touching it would work. I've tried restarting and that didn't clear it up as well as changing some scrolling speeds. Just wondering if anyone else had seen this problem.

I purchased an iMac 27in with an i7 quad core, 8G of memory, and 1G video memory. I have up dated all software to current levels, the display jumping still persists. it happens when the mouse pointer is dragged across the dock or installing something from a disk or downloading from the internet. What could be the possible cause?

Over the last few weeks my battery health on my late '07 MBP has declined from about 79% to a terrible 39% this morning. However, just a few minutes ago something very strange happened. The charge indicator jumped from 23% to 51%, but the indicator remained red. I did a search but didn't find anything about this issue, so I thought I'd post. Has anyone seen this before?
I just calibrated my battery 2 days ago and it still showed my health as 39%, but now iStat is showing the battery health as 70%. The battery info is listed below:

Since upgrading to Snow Leopard I an issue with finder, when I open up any drive and then click say a folder/directory starting with the letter A, then click on a sub-folder, finder jumps to the very bottom of the top level folder/directory list. This forces me each time to then scroll back to the top where I was working.
It easier to see than describe the fault/feature, so hope this makes sense.

When I drag-and-drop a jpeg from a website into a desktop folder, the folder physically "leaps" several inches out of position toward the center of the desktop. This is strange...and annoying, because it makes the folder harder to reach with subsequent drags-and-drops.

Sometimes in ALL programs (so far) I am not able to click certain stuff. For example, when I'm in Safari (4.0) I try to click a link but nothing happens. It shows me the clicking finger thing and I am able to scroll (I can not use the two finger scroll on the trackpad only the sidebar) and I am able to move the window around. I have found that I can fix it sort of by clicking the link millions of times. Oh also I can not right click the link but I can right click everywhere else.
I thought maybe it might be some of my 3rd party software but I doubt it. The only things I have installed are geekTool and this Cleardock replacement called Mirage.

Intel iMac Dual Core 2.4 GHz with wired Magic Mouse.
This just started happening a few days ago. My cursor randomly jumps to the upper left corner of the screen for no good reason. I've cleaned the optical sensor on the mouse.
I used a test account and it didn't happen there (although I probably should have given it a longer test). I'm wondering if it's a corrupted preferences issue, but I can't find any likely prefs to trash.
