Jul 2, 2009I recently picked up a USB Hard Disk, I plan on copying large files to it (for example 20gb VMs), I am wondering whether or not finder can copy files as large as 20gb one at a time because the last time I tried to do this on a USB Stick, the file transfer would either freeze or would end up taking way too long to transfer and in the end I had to pull it out and having to reformat it. DOes anyone here know if such things will happen again copying these files?

Sep 2, 2014I am willing to save on my hard disk the content of a SD card that contains mts files that I can access via AVCHD, BDMV, STREAM.
When I copy the whole SD card to save on my hard disk, I get an error message saying that the copy cannot proceed because one of the file contains information that cannot be read.
I was told on this group, that changing the structure of the AVCHD folder should not be changed. Can I delete the file that contains a bug ? or will I screw up the AVCHD folder ?

Nov 11, 2009i just ordered a late 2008 macbook pro 15 with the dual GPUs (9400m and 9600m GT) and I'm a little worried about the battery life.
-What can I expect if just doing normal every day stuff (web surfing mostly?)
-does watching a movie off of the hard disk use less battery than watching it off a DVD? Is there a big difference?
I'm not a big gamer but would like to have the horsepower to play a game should one come out that I want. I'm also not a big traveler so battery times are only of average importance.
Basically, I'm asking if I made a good purchase considering I have only average concerns for both battery and game performance. They had the new 7 hour battery 15" macbook pro for the same price but it doesn't have the dual GPUs.

Nov 25, 2010Every time I try to export a movie in iMovie or burn a disk in iDVD an error message pops up and says that my startup disk is full. So I bought an external hard drive and backed up my mac using Time Machine. Now I want to delete everything off my mac's internal Hard Drive and use my external hard drive so I can empty my disk. Does this make sense? If so will you please tell me how to do so.

Aug 16, 2010My Time Machine Backups, formatted as Mac OS Extended case-sensitive with journaling, is outgrowing my 1T Seagate Freeagent external hard disk. I would like to replace it with a 1.5T Seagate Freeagent.
I read that Disk Utility could be used to restore my old Time Machine Backups to the new disk, but I have tried this several times in vain. There was probably no problem during the initial phase of block copying, but the process always aborted with an error message that read, "input/ output error". I had formatted my new disk as Mac OS Extended with journaling. I did not forget to erase the new hard disk. I did not allow my iMac to sleep in case this might have caused the problem. As a last resort, I even tried to copy just the backup folder with "cp -Rp" only to learn that this did not work.

Apr 4, 2012I am trying to make a redundant backup image of my harddrive using something OTHER than Time Machine. I booted to recovery because you image from a disk you are booted from. The restore took 2 hours, and indicated the entire time in disk utility that it was restoring "Mac HD" to a similarly sized partition on my external hard drive. When it was done, the external had a copy of my recovery drive on it. That's crazy talk.

Feb 26, 2009I recently purchased a Western Digital "My Passport Essential" 160mb external hard drive. When I attempt to transfer "any" type of material (JPEGS, PSD, MP3, MPEG, etc) from my 600 MHz PowerPC G3 (iMac) operating on an OS X, to the external hard drive, the file's "Date Modified" (date and time) "mysteriously" changes to the time at which I'm copying the files. For example, a file that was last saved on July 1, 2008 and then transferred (copied) on February 26, 2009 to the external drive, suddenly appears with a "new" February 26, 2009 saved date.
Because, I've always viewed my files by the "Date Modified" option at the top of the folder, I've relied on my files for its accurate date and times.

Aperture :: Error 36 When Copying Library To External Hard Drive
Jun 2, 2014I am trying to copy my aperture 3 library (126GB) to an external hard drive to free up space on my local hard drive.
When it is at the final 1gb of the process I recieve an error message:
"The Finder can’t complete the operation because some data in “Aperture 3 Library” can’t be read or written.
(Error code -36)"
I have repaired the aperture library and repaired permissions and this did not work.
I'm running 10.9.3

Mar 18, 2012This error probably indicates a hardware problem or some system malfunction. I usually try to find out what exactly went wrong to take measures to avoid the repetition of the same problem. Exchanging the HD and restoring the sytem may be the quicker solution, but I would miss an opportunity to reconfigure my system to make it more robust.
The system in question is a MacMini (Model A1347) with Os-X-Server 10.6.7. and 2 physical HDs: HD1 has 2 Partitions, the smaller for the server OS, the larger for the Shares (We use the MacMini only as a file server). HD2 is not used (was kept in reserve for cases like this).
That there may be a problem manifested itself first when the mounting of the shares on HD1 became suddenly slow (within 2-3 days) and eventually failed. I first tried to copy all the files from the shares on HD1 to HD2 before attempting any repair actions. Most of the files copied properly but a few failed with error (-36). Those few can be restored from backups, so there is no data loss. Remains the question, what went wrong?
It may be pure coincidence but just before the File-Server failed there was an attempt to upgrade a 3rd party software on one of the clients (17'' MacBook Pro / OS X 10.6.8) to a newer version. Could be that new version was part of the problem because the data files of this 3rd party software are stored on one of the shares on HD1 and the data file format has been changed between the versions. For obvious reasons I need to make sure that this data file conversion was not the cause of the problem?
1) first check the HD1 with a different tool than DiskUtility (It thinks the HD1 is in perfect shape), TechTool Pro or DiskWarrier comes to my mind, any reason to prefer one over the other?
2) Hopefully those tools can reliably test whether the HD1 is damaged or not. If it is the former the HD1 replacement option is the way to go and there is no more reason the 3rd party software may have been involved. However if HD1 is not damaged I'm left with the uncertainty of what exactly lead to the problem..?
3) Is there any check I should do before I just re-format the HD and re-install the OS and switch back to an earlier version of the 3rd party software to be on the safe side?

Jun 29, 2014I am running OSX 10.9.3 on a 3GHz Intel Core 2 Duo iMac with 12GB RAM, and itunes 11.2.2 (3) 64 Bit. My itunes library is large (approx 1 TB) and contains mostly ripped CDs, vinyl and ripped DVDs and BluRays. I usually add media using the File/Add to Library command. This set up has been reliable for a couple of years at least.
At time of writing itunes will still happily add music files, but is no longer happy to add movie files. I get a message telling me that the disk which contains my itunes library (I use a 2TB external HD) cannot be written to or read from. Clearly this isn't true as I can write music files to it.
I tried disk repair in the disk utility and it tells me the drive is healthy. I thought maybe there is a maximum itunes library size. As a check I tried starting a completely new itunes library on a different external drive and the problem persists.
I have >500GB spare space on the drive containing my itunes library. All my drives are formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled) so should not suffer any file size limitation.

Apr 11, 2010I am considering purchasing diskwarrior but want to make sure it can help my situation before I purchase it. My imac will not boot from the internal hard drive (Intel processor) When I use disk utility to try and repair the disk, I get error messages and it won't repair. I can see the HD but cannot repair it. When I connect using target mode with my mac book pro, the hard drive does not appear on my host (macbook pro) computer. I have reloaded OS X (Leopard) onto a firewire external drive and can boot my imac that way but I can not find my original internal Macintosh HD. Will disk warrior be able to help with this scenario. I would really like to access that internal Macintosh HD and retrieve my files.

Apr 24, 2012I have a 2TB Western Digital My Book Studio FW800 external that has 5 partitions, connected to my 2011 iMac. I had help doing the partitions and don't really remember the reasoning, but one is just for my SuperDuper! backup, one is Miscellaneous, one for movie clips off my camcorder, one for misc scanned photo's and one for my genealogy research. I back up using Time Machine to a Time Capsule and also to this WD hard drive with SuperDuper!
Recently I'm getting a pop up message that "Mac OS X can't repair the disk "Genealogy"'. And it needs to be reformatted. It's become a read only disk. When I look in Disk Utility it shows all the partitions as "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)" EXCEPT for the one in question. I also noticed that there are a lot of files with "date created" being the same date in 1969! These files may be letters I've written or photo's I added to that partition within the last few years.
I think I have to completely reformat the entire external hard drive to repair this, but I want to make sure. Because it's going to be a major hassle backing it all up to another external (having to get one first) and then figuring out how to make the files that have turned "read only" in that one partition, back to their original state! Does this sound right, that I have to reformat the entire external hard drive? And how do I get the read-only files back to their original state.

OS X Leopard :: Disk Write Cache Corruption On External Hard Disk?
Feb 15, 2011Recently I purchased an external hard disk, to put all of my pictures of my baby due to space limitations on my internal laptop drive. Since my Canon camera 10 megapixel pictures take up a ton of space this was occurring at an alarming rate. My intention was also to back up to DVD but never got to it. This is both a comment and a question.
Now said baby, is getting really good at pulling cords etc. He managed to do this on the external drive firewire cable. As far as i know the drive was not in the process of actually writing. However, after a few minutes and trying to re-plug the drive the OS crashed with a Grey Screen of Death hardware error that tells you that you need to push the power button..
This apparently corrupted the drive's directory. Upon reboot the drive would not mount. Since there were time machine backups on the drive too Diskwarrior was not able to reconstruct the drive in the built in memory available on the computer. Time machine stores millions of files and Diskwarrior apparently wants to keep it all in memory at once. Since my computer has 2GB you would hope that would be enough but apparently not. So that failed. Other utilities seemed to be able to find the files but not restore the directory. I also took it to the apple store they were not able to recover it.
I have to say this is extremely distressing, and hard to believe that a simple accident like this could cost the loss of thousands of pictures. I did send it to a rescue company but that was expensive but I think apple needs to do something about this situation.
On Windows there is a way to disable the write cache for external drives. This is not available for Mac OS X. This would prevent this rather common occurrence of a plug accidentally becoming disengaged when the drive is not in the process of writing. This reduces the odds but I still think apple, in order to become clearly superior, needs a better solution.
I know Apple has experimented with ZFS would this not eliminate this possibility of this kind of disaster? Is this in Snow Leopard desktop? I know they are thinking this is a business customer focused technology but clearly if it can eliminate this kind of thing then I think it is extremely useful to their non server customers. Perhaps there are other ways of dealing with this issue but ZFS is designed to deal with these issues. HFS+ is extremely fragile to disk corruption.
I know my situation is not that uncommon and this is not the first time this has happened to me with an external drive. You would think I had learned. I hate to think of how many other people have had the same thing happen to them.
