Wasn't sure what section to put this in but anyhow. I have been downloading .cab files for my Windows based phone and sometimes they download as .exe files as they should but many times they just download as a .php document and I cant do anything with it. Any guess as to why or how to make it download as a .exe file all the time?

View 24 Replies View RelatedAbout a month ago, a friend who had just purchased his first Mac emailed me and asked why his Dock DownLoad file disappeared. I had no idea why. He still hasn't been able to reestablish it.
Yesterday, I downloaded something and my Dock DownLoad file vanished. I have tried rebooting, using (useless) Help, Spotlight, Search, and several other things. NO JOY. NO DownLoad file.
1. Does anyone know where to find DownLoad or how to bring it back?
I have experienced several idiosyncrasies with Snow Leopard, but when I call Apple support, they are very nice, but haven't a clue as to why it's happening.
2. Another problem is that the Highlight gets anchored on something in Mail, Word, and some other Apps. When I click somewhere else, the whole area between the "anchor" and what I click on is lit up. Apple doesn't know what causes it. I have to go through multiple machinations to shake it loose. I don't know what it is that causes it or specifically how to "shake it loose". Neither does Apple.
3. When typing in Word or an editor, there are times when the type changes to UpperCase and won;t let go.
Another problem is that, at times, when I click on a file, it fills the screen. Apple is aware of this problem and is trying to find an answer. Nothing, to date.
Apple support can't tell me why the MacMail Inbox spinner disappeared or how to get it back.
There are times when I can't access the hidden Dock. After rebooting and trying other things, the Dock finally shows up but any additions that I have put on the Dock are no longer there.
When I put a DVD in the slot, for the first few seconds, it grinds but does smooth out.
I thought that SL was supposed to get rid of the "foibles". "What happened on the way to the Forum"?
Is anyone finding other SL idiosyncrasies? What are they?
If anyone can help with items 1., 2, and/or 3. I'd be grateful.
BTW, Apple says that items 2 and 3 MAY be caused by the wireless Magic Mouse and/or the wireless keyboard; however, when I use alternates, it still happens.

When we save these files, the only options given are "desktop" and "our external drive". We need to save them to folders, preferably on our external drive. Even if we create a folder on the desktop, we can't figure out how to save the file in that folder directly. The desktop is a mess because it is littered with images.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI have had some trouble lately when downloading DMG files with Safari. In the URL bar I could see it was downloading and then downloaded however nothing happend. Changed to open with DiskUtility didn't do anything. Firewall had no influence. When downloaded with Firefox there was NO problem and everything went fine like it use to do with Safari. So I suspect it is a bug in Safari since this happens with all DMG files of late.

ive been using my mac to unzip zip arhcive files ive downloaded from the internet and for the past few months ive had to troubles at all. but more recently my mac wouldnt actuallty zip the files. so i started using a free application in the app store called stuffit expander. but now even stuffit expander wont unzip my files. what is happening? the stuffit expander just says it is unable to recognize the file type which makes no sense, and when i use the default unzip application already on my mac it just turns the zip file into a file with the extension .cpgz

But when I went to find the files I could not find them, even using Finder and Spotlight. I eventually found them using 'EasyFind' but I am still perplexed as to why I cannot see them. I can see other files in my downloads file and on my desktop!
I am hoping to convert WMA files to MP3 formate on a mac. I tried out the program named switch but I was unable to make that work (I was only using the trial version anyway. I did see the thread that was started in Nov 06 but it seems to be a little too old for discussion sakes. I was also hopping for new information/evolution of programs and freeware. I will try what it says about switch but I doubt it will work.
If you have any other programs, I would love to hear about them. (just as a side note, the WMA files could be protected. I don't know if they are and I dont know how to know if they are or are not. I read on the switch application page that it supports the decoded version of WMA thus that might be the reason it doesn't work).
I am presently on an IMac with Snow Leopard installed on it. I found an old cdrom disk of mine that I burned a few years back when I had a Windows computer. I think it ran Windows XP Home. Anyways, I used a burning program called Hotburn to burn the disk. I burned my address book, several photos, different folders of various things onto the disk. For whatever reason, the file extensions on every file turned into .ink. So, how can I open them on my mac? I copied the files on the burned disk to a new folder on my imac.

As a newbie to the Mac I have downloaded from the internet a series of multi-part files where the file names are filename.zip.001.1.bin, filename.zip.001.2.bin, filename.zip.001.3.bin etc through to filename.zip.001.60.bin.
I know that the '001' refers to the fact that it is disk 1 of a series but I cannot work out which is the best program to decode and restore to original. I suspect that I need to use one program to decode the .bin files and then possibly something like 'Split&Concat' to join the parts into one zip file and then unzip the file.
My problem is finding a program that will recognise the .bin files and decode them. I have tried 'Stuffit v10 & v12' and also 'BetterZip' but without success. The files were downloaded on a PC so is it possible that the PC has in some way made them an unrecognisable file format to the Mac, I think this is unlikely though. The files were stored on a FAT32 hard disk which the Mac is quite happy to read.
I download files from the internet and they install but when I try and open them, it says please choose application and nothing opens it.

View 6 Replies View RelatediTunes 10.5.3 (3). The last group of songs I downloaded and encoded to mp3 continue to duplicate and show up in itunes everytime I sync my iPhone or iPod. I keep the library stored on an external hard drive and always change "iTunes media folder location" to the EHD, which is also annoying. I've deleted the default folder in Lion but the songs keep showing up in m4a format. I then have to start all over. (tags, info etc.) This is the first time I've had this problem and I'd like it to stop.

I could not find any recent helpful answers via Google, but eventually discovered, by trial and error, that you need to delete the failed downloads in three places namely: /Library/Updates (this is probably unnecessary)
and the *two* files here:- /private/var/folders/<complicated long path>/<name> where <name> ends in .pkg and also in .pkg.resumeData (i.e. the "same name" twice)
I found out where these were being saved by (*immediately* after the update-failure), typing find /private/var/folders -newerct "1 minute ago" -name "*.resumeData" and sure enough, these corresponded to the failed downloads. I removed them with sudo rm /private/var/folders/<complicated long path discovered via find/<name>.pgk sudo rm /private/var/folders/<complicated long path discovered via find/<name>.pgk.resumeData
and then the software update started working again instead of always aborting with e.g. "iTunes: partially downloaded" etc. The reason for the original failure is my poor internet service that constantly breaks halfway through any long-ish downloads.
An example of the actual filepath on my 10.6.8 Mac OSX is:
/private/var/folders/02/027LjtRMGXSZNggzpqLQg++++TI/-Caches-/com.apple.SoftwareU pdate/swcdn.apple.com/content/downloads/<same amount again in length>
in other words, really long winded and very difficult to find (I have been trying to do this all day and could not find anything via the www) - I hope it helps you!

I've noticed that if I download a 1080p trailer from apple.com/trailers in .mov format it works flawlessly, perfect image and audio. Is there a (quick) way to convert a .mkv to .mov and have it play perfectly with no hitch, on the 360. If trailers off apple.com can play there must be a workaround.
