MacBook :: Shuts Down Unexpectedly - Screen "fizzling" When Using Thumb Drive
Feb 17, 2009
Well just recently my MacBook (bought 2/17/2007) started shutting down by itself. Seems to happen after long use (3hrs) and when it starts to get hot. Also noticed screen doin a "fizzle" when using a thumb drive. Anyway went to Apple and dropped it off. They said they will run some stress tests on it and get back to me. I know there are a few things out there about this but wondering if any of you have experienced this recently or at all?
No warranty either. So if it is a logic board issue not sure... or if its a heat sink issue? Not sure what that entails to get it repaired. I was not expecting them to take the MacBook right then and there so i was sorta concerned as it has everything but... want to get it figured out.

I have a MacBook Pro from 2010 I believe with iOS Maverick installed. (MacKeeper is also on there, which I just found out is apparently malware)
So three days ago I was watching Netflix, the image froze, but the audio kept going. Figured my internet was slow, so I waited a little, nothing happened. pressed escape to leave the full screen mode, but nothing happened. None of the keys would do anything, not even the sound or brightness keys. So I did a force shut down by holding down the power button.
I waited a little, then decided to turn it back on. Start up sound played, white screen with grey apple logo and loading gear appeared together with a grey loading bar. I figured that this meant it had to repair something. But after about a minute or two it just went to a black screen/ shut down. I left it off for a day, tried it again, same thing. Next day I tried booting it up while holding the shift key to do the safe boot (I knew it wouldn't work since I already had the grey loading bar anyways), same thing happened.

As of a few days ago my MacBook Pro has been acting oddly. When I shut the clamshell and reopen it again a few minutes (or hours) later it's hot and makes sounds as if it is working hard at something but the display will not turn on. I usually end up turning it off anf then on again via the power button. I have a wireless keyboard attached due to damage to the laptop's own keyboard, but use the laptop's power button (which still functions). I've reattached, and reset, the keyboard a few times in case that was the problem but had no luck. It doesn't hinder my usage of the computer once it's on again but it is strange.

I own the first 'remolded' revision of the Macbook released in '08 (5,1), and have had it for over a year now. Recently though, after 10 or so minutes running off just battery power (fully charged), it shuts down unexpectedly. It doesn't say the battery is low, or near low, it just shuts down. It's really annoying, I have to use the charger wherever I go. I really need my laptop so I don't really want to take it to an Apple Store and have to wait a week to get it fixed, unless it's really necessary. My software is up to date. Any ideas on what my problem is/how to fix it?

I got my macbook during November of 2009 but two weeks ago it started shutting down by itself once I touch the magsafe of the macbook or remove the magsafe. All it needs is a simple touch and it shuts down. When it does shut down, the light indicator doesn't come on anymore. I have to keep removing the magsafe, and plugging it back in like 20 times until it starts charging again. So now I just let it fully charge every time I use it since any sudden movement will cause it to shut down. I will be making an appointment next week at the apple store because I had no time to go these past 2 weeks. I never dropped it and take good care of it. I am just wondering what might be the cause of this? I hope they do not take weeks to fix the mac since I have a lot of homework to do

Three times today, my iMac has shut down while working. This has never happened before. Could it be related to the external backup drive, a G Drive Mini, pulling too much power?

I have a strange problem with my late-2008/early-2009 MBP. In the last couple of days, I have been using it and the screen goes black suddenly. It happened once for just a few seconds and then recovered, but today it completely shut off-- even though the battery was mostly charged (and I had received no warnings)-- so I had to reboot.
A few possibly relevant facts about this computer and this incident:
1) I've had it over a year and never had this problem before.
2) I had the logic board replaced recently because of an issue with sleep mode. This problem never appeared before the logic board was replaced (although this may be a coincidence).
3) Both times the problem happened this week, the computer was running on battery power.
4) Earlier this week (before the incident), I got a little warning to "Check battery" or something similar. The warning went away, though. Maybe this is a faulty battery issue?
5) When the computer completely shut off, it was also running a Time Machine backup. I noticed that TM has been having trouble today-- giving warnings about errors. Not sure if this could be related.

I've a MDD G4 dual 1.0 along with the wide acrylic-bezel 20" Mac monitor with the light in the lower right corner. Yep, it's starting to look ancient. But I still have much use for it EXCEPT that it has a very nasty habit of turning itself off catastropically in mid-thought, as it were. Oddly, this behavior comes and goes in spurts. it will hit hard for a couple of weeks then a couple of months will pass with relative peace and stability. Then, back to the crisis.
Sometimes I get a warning from that power-on light in the bezel -- it might flash brighter for an instant, then within a few seconds the whole system loses power just as if I'd turned off my power strip. Other times, it pops in and out of sleep mode for several cycles, but usually this ends the same, with no power at all. Odder still, the machine has a tendency to turn itself on unaided. This can happen even after a controlled shutdown. It turns on, acts normal for 20 minutes, then maybe goes to sleep and wakes up a couple of times, then crashes. No intervention at all on my part at any time. This is not a software shutdown of any controlled variety. Anyone know what's happening? I can't tell you how much gnashing my teeth have endured.

I have Western Digital My Book Pro II 2TB hard drive connected through FireWire 800 or 400 cable. The problem is that it shuts itself off unexpectedly all the time. Sometimes right after I turn it on, sometimes after 30 minutes. After turning it back everything seems to be fine, no loss of data. Anyone else experienced the same problem and can suggest how to fix it?

I am trying to restore my Macbook Air using the Apple Lion Thumb Drive. I inserted the thumb drive, restarted, and held down Command-R. I got the recovery mode, and it is asking me to choose a Wi-Fi Network to continue... I don't have wi-fi here. Is there a way to do this using the thumb drive and no internet?

I have an Aluminum MacBook, is it possible to install Windows with boot camp from a thumb drive? I have access to the ISOs I need (from MSDNAA), but I ran out of CDR/DVDRs. Ideally I would extract the ISO onto the thumb drive and have it behave the same as if it was a CD, is it that simple or is there something else I will need to do?

I have a thumb drive that if i plug it into my MacBook Air in the left usb port, it takes at least 3 minutes before it shows up on my desktop, sometimes MUCH longer. If i plug it into the right USB port, it shows up after a minute. If I plug this same thumb drive into a PC, it shows up within seconds. If i plug a different thumb drive into either USB port on the Air, it shows up within seconds.
It's a FAT32 thumb drive, and i've already tried reformatting it and the same stuff happens. I've even had disk utility check it out and nothing's wrong. I'd guess the thumb drive is bad but it works instantly if i plug it into a PC, so guessing that's not it. It's a 10.6 MacBook Air.

I'm trying to install ubuntu from a thumb drive. Basically, I'm converting the .iso to an .img, and restore the thumb drive from the .img, trying to make it bootable. I'm following the procedure form the ubuntu website. Drag and Drop a file from Finder to Terminal to 'paste' the full path without typing and risking type errors.
Download the desired file
Open the Terminal (in /Applications/Utilities/ or query Terminal in Spotlight)
Convert the .iso file to .img using the convert option of hdiutil (e.g., hdiutil convert -format UDRW -o ~/path/to/target.img ~/path/to/ubuntu.iso)
Note: OS X tends to put the .dmg ending on the output file automatically.
Run diskutil list to get the current list of devices
Insert your flash media
Run diskutil list again and determine the device node assigned to your flash media (e.g. /dev/disk2)
Run diskutil unmountDisk /dev/diskN (replace N with the disk number from the last command; in the previous example, N would be 2)
Execute sudo dd if=/path/to/downloaded.img of=/dev/rdiskN bs=1m (replace /path/to/downloaded.img with the path where the image file is located; for example, ./ubuntu.img or ./ubuntu.dmg).
Using /dev/rdisk instead of /dev/disk may be faster.
If you see the error dd: Invalid number '1m', you are using GNU dd. Use the same command but replace bs=1m with bs=1M.
If you see the error dd: /dev/diskN: Resource busy, make sure the disk is not in use. Start the 'Disk Utility.app' and unmount (don't eject) the drive.
Run diskutil eject/dev/diskN and remove your flash media when the command completes
Restart your Mac and press alt while the Mac is restarting to choose the USB-Stick
Everything goes through fine, except, when I restart my mac to see the boot options. All I see is Macintosh HD

I wanted to put something on thumb drive to transfer over to my other mac but it was too big for it so I made space by transferring some of the files on to my mac. I ended up emptying out my thumb drive to make room. So I had to delete the files on my thumb drive once I moved the files to my mac since moving them basically just makes copies. However, my empty thumb drive still reads as if nothing was ever removed. I have a empty 4GB thumb drive that says I only have 1 plus GB left?
