Apr 24, 2012

My wife has a MacBook and there is no firewire port. We are trying to capture video from our Sony Handycam mini DV camcorder but without the firewire port we can't capture the video in I Movie. Is there a way of connecting the Sony camcorder to the Macbook and capturing the video?

MacBook :: Monitoring Video Through Firewire Port Possible?

Jul 20, 2009

I have cable TV streaming in through my Firewire port. What is a good program for viewing it? So today I decided to run a cable from our TV room to my laptop desk so I can watch "educational" programming. But I ran into a small problem:
CableVision to old VCR so I can make use of its built-in tuner, RCA cables from VCR to ADS (Converts inputs to RCA & Firewire out), and Firewire from ADS to MacBook.

This all works fine but I then realized I have no decent program to watch the video on. I can open Quicktime and see a small window, and no doubt if I hit record the sound would be captured as well but the sound is not audible while monitoring. I tried iMovie and again had a small window to watch. Still not what I want. So what can I use to watch the video from my Firewire full screen and with sound?

Intel Mac :: Can't Capture Video From DV Camera Via Firewire?

May 31, 2012

I'm tryin to transfer video from my Sony DV camera to my iMac, but neither iMovie not Adobe Premiere cannot recognise the device.  They both automatically select my iSight camera as the one and only video source.

When I check the Firewire status in System Profiler I get the message: "Unable to list FireWire devices".

I have tired restarting the software, unplugging the camera, unplugging the firewire cable, restarting my Mac but still no result.

I spent a considerable amount of time Googling for solutions but have not come up with anything that helped.  I have also tried unplugging all other USB devices, restarting the machine, trying again, but still the same issue.

The weird thing is that about a year ago I managed to capture video just fine from the camera into Premiere without any problems.

The only thing that is different now, is that I have Windoes XP installed on my Mac as well. Could this be an issue, with XP "stealing" my firewire connection in some manner?  I'm not sure how this would be possible, but I suppose it could be...

My iMac is a 21.5" with an Intel Core 2 Duo 3.06GHz processor.  4GB DDR3 Ram and Mac OS X 10.6.8

iMovie is version 8.0.6 and Premiere is CS4. As I said, I had managed to capture video using the same equpiment about a year ago and the only difference now is that I also have a partition on my Mac with Windows XP (Service pack 3) on it.

Of course, the cable itself could be faulty, but since it hasn't been used in over a year, I doubt that's the issue. I still wanna try anything else, before I buy a new cable.

iMac, Mac OS X (10.6.8), Intel Core 2 Duo 3.06GHz processor.

IMac :: Connect Via Firewire To Sony TRV - 22 Camcoder - Need Which Firewire Cable

Oct 12, 2009

I just got a Mac Mini (March 2009 model) and want to connect it via Firewire to my Sony TRV-22 camcoder. The camcorder has a Mini DV Firewire jack on it (I think this is called a 4-pin connector sometimes too). But on the Mac Mini, I can't tell if I need a 6-pin or a 9-pin. Can someone point me to a good cable so I can dump some MiniDV tapes into iMovie?

Hardware :: Image Capture Not Recognize Sony Camera

Feb 28, 2008

Bought new Mac Mini and have been using it for two weeks with no problem. Until now.

Plugged in my Sony camera which has worked with the old G4 Quicksilver for the last 4 years. iPhoto didn't open, so I checked Image Capture, which says "No device connected"... Checked leads, restarted etc, still the same.

Took the MemoryStick out of the camera and put it in a card reader and iPhoto opened immediately.

Swapped USB sockets. Checked System Profiler; no camera shows as connected.

Any suggestions as to how to get the Sony working again from its cradle? It seems to be connected in the cradle because it's charging OK.

MacBook Pro :: Hooking Using Mini Display Port On An Older Sony TV

I'm trying to hook a MacBook Pro to an older Sony TV that has an s-video or composite video port available. I prefer the s-video because the quality will be better while playing movies. On my older MacBook Pro I use a DVI to Video adapter that apple produces. With the new MacBook Pro's apple doesn't make a mini displayport to video adapter. What do you recommend I do?

Hardware :: New 13" MacBook Pro Drops Digital Audio Input For FireWire And SD?

Jun 9, 2009

The new 13" MacBook Pro unveiled at WWDC makes room for its new SD card slot and FireWire 800 port in part by giving up a digital audio input port. Instead, the new model uses the same integrated mic and headphone port as the iPhone. Most MacBook users are unlikely to ever employ the combination digital and analog audio input port, which has appeared on all Mac notebooks for years. Podcasters are likely to use a USB mic like the Blue Snowball instead. However, lots of users are likely to want to use their iPhone or iPod touch combination headset/mic with their MacBook for video conferencing, and recent notebooks have added the additional pin required to support recording audio in addition to stereo headphone analog outputs and digital audio output.

Software :: Image Capture Does Not Allow Downloads From Digital Camera?

Aug 23, 2010

On my Mac running Leopard 10.5, Image Capture has Preferences that allow me to choose an option that opens Image Capture when a USB digital camera is attached. That's gone on my new Mac with Snow Leopard. I never needed camera software to make this work, and unfortunately I have a Canon camera and Canon does not make drivers or software for Snow Leopard. So, how does one get Image Capture to open and download images from a digital camera? Did Apple dumb-down Image Capture like they did to iMovie?

I have a macbook 2.16ghz bought in June 07. Im wanting to buy a western digital 320gb external drive, which is supposed to be powered by the usb port. I read somewhere it takes 600 MA to power it, and someone said it took 1000MA to power it. In system profiler it says my macbook's usb supports 500MA, which really surprised me since its a pretty new computer. My question is if anyone has a 320gb passport drive on the same generation macbook i have that works. Or if you need a y cable to do it.

MacBook Pro :: Mini Display Port Not Working On DVI - I Or Non Fully Digital Displays

Jun 2, 2010

I finally upgraded from my 15" PowerBook 1.67 to the new 13" MacBook Pro 2.66. On the PowerBook I would usually run an external display using a single link DVI cable. I have read about the issues with the apple mini display adapters not working on DVI-I or non fully digital displays, but since I had been running the external via single link DVI (digital correct?) I figured that I wouldn't run into any problems. I did some troubleshooting with what I had and plugged my computer into my TV through the mini display adapter to a single link DVI to HDMI cable and all worked fine. Do you think that a dual link DVI cable could solve the problem connecting to my monitor? Or is my monitor flat out incabable? Third party adapter? Worst case I could just go VGA, though I don't want to. My monitor is a Sceptre x20.

MacBook :: FireWire Port Stopped Working

Feb 27, 2010

The Firewire port on my MacBook has stopped working. Nothing responds and when you look in System Profiler with anything connected the Firewire section shows the spinning indicator for a few minutes before claiming it is unable to list devices. I have also tried all the usual troubleshooting steps including resetting the SMC. But, if I put my thumb under the connected Firewire plug and gently press upwards the port works. It shows in System Profiler and drives mount. I have, of course, tried with different cables to rule that out too.

It clearly seems to be a physical problem with the port somehow. Does anyone have any ideas of exactly what the problem might be, and how easy it is to fix? Maybe a pin just needs bending outwards, or the port loose and can a clip needs pushing back in. If it is likely to be something relatively simple I am comfortable with fixing it myself, but the laptop is a few years old and not covered by AppleCare so I am wearing of an expensive repair bill.

MacBook Pro :: Firewire Port In 2007 Vs Current

Anyways, this new Macbook Pro I have has one too. Except... the connection is smaller on my new Macbook Pro... So I'm guessing there are different connection sizes and I need a new firewire cable? I think my current cable has the same size that both connects to the hard drive as to my old macbook. What labelling would I need to find to find a cable with the bigger connection on one side and the smaller connection on the other
