OS X :: Using Single User Snow Leopard On More Than One Mac?

Aug 30, 2009

I have two macs (a macbook pro and an imac) and am wondering if I can install Snow Leopard (the single user copy I bought) on both... or will they report in to Apple and say that it's been activated already? I have no problem buying another copy if I have to but this would save me some time and money!

OS X :: Snow Leopard Single-user On Multiple Systems?

Apr 17, 2010

I have bought myself a copy of Snow Leopard, single user upgrade version ($29). I have not yet installed it, but I'm curious:

Lets say I install it on my MacBook Pro and that in a few months I buy a SSD to replace my current HDD. I would probably opt to go for a clean install (I am pondering whether or not to do it now) and copy over some important files. Would this work? Or would the install disk see my new SSD as another computer?

OS X V10.6 Snow Leopard :: After Going On 'single-user Mode' It Won't Turn On

Mar 6, 2012

I got a Macbook with OS X. I was too impatient to get the administrator name and password from the previous owner (BIG MISTAKE).I thought I'd follow the instructions from "How To Create A New Administrator Account" (url..) as they seemed easy and straight forward.

I followed the first step of the process and got into single-user mode (black screen white text).I saw that black screen with white text and thought, "Woah man, I'm out my my depth. My brother typed 'help' in order to find out how to exit single-user mode, he said that's how it's done on windows? (I also have limited knowledge about Windows). I typed in various things such as 'reboot' in an attempt to exit. Eventually the battery died. I turned the Macbook back on and the grey screen with the apple logo with the spinning wheel appeared. The spinning wheel span and span but the computer will not start up.

OS X V10.6 Snow Leopard :: Mount Device Via USB In Single User Mode

Jul 4, 2012

My macbook pro appeared to be crashed with harddisk problem at start time.. unable to boot to normal login screen. When I run in single user mode, I dont seem to see my thumbdrive, or external device.

I connected them via the USB ports on my Macbook pro (17")(Snow Leopard) I checked /dev/disk* and saw only disk0 (disk0, disk0s1, disk0s2, disk0s3). I never get to see disk1 no matter what I tried. (I've various MSDOs format, or NTFS format disks).

I followed the advise here: [URL] Am I supposed to be able to see the drive the moment I connect it to the port?

Is there any way that I can create an Administrator-Status user in Single User Mode? OS X :: Unable To Install Leopard On Powermac G4 Agp Single CPU?

Jul 27, 2010

Okay, I have a power mac g4 sawtooth single CPU. I purchased a leopard install disk for the cheapest I could find without realising that it wasn't supported on this machine officially (I didn't get snow leopard because I knew that it only supported intel). So I inserted the disk (without modifying) and after booting to it got a kernel panic beginning with "the correct driver could not be found for this platform powermac 3,1". I then tried the open firmware hack many times and the same problem occured. I also tried the guide at [URL] many times even with putting in the kexts that the guide told me to if I was getting kernel panics but to no avail. I then managed to borrow my freinds intel mac and installed it to my guid partitioned 16 gb flash drive, I then cloned it to my APM partitioned other hard disk using superduper! and when booting got the same issue, I then put in the relevant kexts from the working tiger install but again to no avail

OS X V10.6 Snow Leopard :: Creating And Restoring A Single Partition

Jun 30, 2012

I frequently have to repartition my drive and reinstall OS X (mainly because I work with multiple OSes that keep changing). In order to simplify the process, I'd like to create a disk image of my system partition that I can simply restore after repartitioning. However, is that even going to work if the new partition (the destination partition) has a different size and is at a different place? What about the boot sector? Will I be able to boot from the restored image?

MacBook Pro :: After Clean Install Snow Leopard, Can't Install Bundled Application (ilife)?

Apr 2, 2012

This is the first time i reinstalled(clean install) my snow leopard on my MBP. All went fine but then i inserted the disc for bundled application (which contains the ilife apps) but it keeps failing.

It says that "the installation failed. the installer encountered an error that caused the installation to fail. contact the software manufacturer for assistance".

I've also done my research on this matter. I've gone thru a few steps i tried as below without success:

1)normal install - fail

2)repair permission - fail

3)install in safe mode - fail

4) install using another admin acc - fail

5) made an image out of the disc and install - fail

6) used a similar disc(my dad's since we have identical version) - fai

7)updated my system and install - fail

8) reinstall the mac - fail

i cant think of any other solution as im a bit noob when it comes to mac. is there any other things i could try before taking it Apple?

MacBook :: Usb Drive Not Recognized In Single User Mode

Sep 14, 2009

The title pretty much says it all: When booted in single user mode, I can't get my machine to recognize the USB drive. Here's what I did:

1. inserted usb stick (memorex 4GB traveldrive, msdos filesystem)
2. booted in single user mode (cmd+s after powering on)
3. mount -uw /
3. looked for usb device in /dev
4. ...it's not there! The USB drive shows up as /dev/disk1s1 after an ordinary boot, but in single user mode it's nowhere to be found. It's not just a name issue either: the list of devices that appear in /dev in single user mode is the same whether or not the USB stick is plugged in.

Even more confusingly, out of the 10(?) times I tried this it worked twice: /dev/disk1s1 actually appeared. mkdir /mydirectory; mount -w -t msdos /dev/disk1s1 /mydirectory worked fine, and I was able to read/write from the stick as usual. I have no idea what I did differently those two times. Does anybody know what's going on? I've got a MacBook2,1 running vanilla Leopard.

MacBook :: Installed Snow Leopard Can't Access To User Folder That Contains Everything?

Mar 12, 2012

I have just installed Snow Leopard on my MacBook, and now all my applications have disappeared from my desktop plus I can't access to my User folder which contains everything including CS4 package. It tells me that I don't have permission to access these folders, which there is only 1 account user on this Mac.

Help!!! What do I do to get a permission to use my old folders from Leopard (10.5)?  And yes, I have backed up everything on my external hard drive before I installed this Snow Leopard! I was assured that I won't lose everything when I have loaded this on, only difference is the software is updated and newer apps but now I can't look into anything I had on my Mac!

MacBook Pro :: How To Restore From Time Machine In Single-user Mode

Jun 23, 2012

I am trying to fix a Macbook Pro that has had its /private folder trashed and emptied. Obviously it won't boot unless you you boot in to Single User mode and I'm wondering if its possible to do a Time Machine restore from the terminal, I would need the 2nd more recent Time Machine image which is sitting on a Firewire HDD.

I was going to just see if I could find the orignal OSX install disk and just do a fresh install of the OS which I don't mind doing (since everything important is backed up in Dropbox), but I can't seem to find the CD anywhere nearby, so the Time Machine option would be much preferred.

MacBook :: Shuts Off During Startup - Can't Get Through Safe / Single User Mode

Aug 31, 2014

My best guess is the problem is not specifically hard-drive related since all the 'normal' fixes just won't work. The only way i've managed to keep the Macbook Pro on for longer than a minute is through target drive, where it seems to work just fine - i can access everything. To sum up everything:

1 - I tried resetting the PRAM

2 - I tried to go in to safe mode, it shut off before i could type the password

3 - I tried fsck -fy command from single user mode, sometimes i can get to actually typing it but mostly it shuts off before

4 - I tried to repair disk via target drive - success, no problems detected

5 - I reinstalled OS Mavericks.

The Macbook Pro previously had some problems with the power-button not working properly (a mac-cunning friend of mine had to open up the mac and start it by swiping to metal pins on a specific (battery/power?) part inside it.

MacBook Pro :: New Snow Leopard Install Vs Factory Install

Jul 14, 2010

Did a search through here but couldn't find anything concrete. What are the differences between a fresh Snow Leopard install and a factory Snow Leopard install? I ask because I bought an Intel SSD and don't know if I should bother cloning the hard drive that will come with my new 15" MBP or I should just install a fresh copy from a Snow Leopard install disc. I'm aware macs come with next to no junk pre-installed, but are there some factory settings that are worth preserving if they aren't documented well?

MacBook Pro :: Install Snow Leopard But It Can't Install And Eject

Sep 4, 2014

I tried to install Snow Leopard on my MacBookPro but it cannot install and cannot be ejected. I need to eject.

The reason for this is a long story. My logic board was replaced and my Mac was wiped clean. I am not trying to recover from back up but could not figure out the next step after the recovery finished. So I tried to install OSX from the disk that came with my Mac. Probably not the right corrective action.

I need to remove the Snow Leopard DVD and finish my recovery.
