Is this safe to do .... connecting 2 macs using firewire while both of them operating

I need to transfer some large files from one mac to the other. (MBPS)
Both of my macs need to be using the internet to be downloading and uploading at the same time..
I know it will use the firewire connection if I turn off one of the airports, but my question is, is their a way to connect using firewire and not going through the network that is what it seems to do when i try to connect with a firewire.
I am trying to simultaneously connect a FireWire HDD to my MBP (running SL) and a PPC G4 (Tiger). It has 2 FW ports but it will not let me mount on both desktops. As I recall, there was a way to easily do this?

I currently have my second MBP that I got from Macmall and both in a matter of two weeks have had similar issues. The first I managed to get returned and replaced, that is a seperate and complicated story in and of itself. This particular issue started with a boot up sequence that was taking about 5-6 mins. After going through the drill with Applecare thought I could restore using Time Machine. That's when I found out that the FW400 port no longer worked to power my Oyen Digital 250G FW drive. Any thoughts as to what might be the problem? This is my second MBP and Oyen Digital FW drive. I had them both replaced!
View 10 Replies View RelatedI just got the external harddrive "Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex USB 3.0 1TB" with a Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex Upgrade Kabel FireWire 800. I have neither a USB 3.0, nor a Firewire 800 on my white macbook (2008). I already know, that it's possible to use USB 3.0 with an USB 2.0 port, but I would like to use it with the firewire to spare the USB port for other devices. My question: Is there an adapter or cable to use the Seagate Firewire 800 with my Firewire 400 port? I don't know, where and what to look for.Â

I have a somewhat old Seagate FreeAgent external drive (like this).
It has a switchable port controller, one has a USB2 and eSATA and the other has two FireWire 400 ports [URL].
Now, on the FW controller it says "Dual FireWire 400".
What is Dual FireWire 400? And does it implicate that I can use both ports together somehow and get FW800 by that?

I am having trouble connecting to MacBookPro01 from MacBookPro02 via SSH.Â
The details is as follow :
MacBookPro01 has remote login activated for all users, is connected to the internet via Wifi, and uses a VPN (AstrillVPN) constantly.
MacBookPro02 is connected to the internet via Wifi on the same network as MacBookPro01 and uses a VPN (AstrillVPN) constantly.Â
From MacBookPro02, I enter "ssh computer name@XXX.XXX.X.XXX" in Terminal.
All I get is : "ssh: connect to host XXX.XXX.X.XXX port 22: Operation timed out".
I just got a Mac Mini (March 2009 model) and want to connect it via Firewire to my Sony TRV-22 camcoder. The camcorder has a Mini DV Firewire jack on it (I think this is called a 4-pin connector sometimes too). But on the Mac Mini, I can't tell if I need a 6-pin or a 9-pin. Can someone point me to a good cable so I can dump some MiniDV tapes into iMovie?

[URL:...] apple on Thursday released an EFI firmware update for 15-inch and 17-inch MacBook Pro mid 2010 models that fixes a freezing or stalling problem. According to Apple, EFI Firmware Update 1.9, which requires Mac OS X 10.6.4, "resolves a rare issue that may cause the system to freeze during startup or intermittently stall during operation." The update, which is a 2.16MB download, also improves external display compatibility. Issues with stalling and external displays on the mid 2010 Macbook Pros had been acknowledged in Apple Support articles. The most recent revision to the MacBook Pro line came in April. [URL:....]

View 12 Replies View RelatedI bought my Macbook Pro in Oct 2009 and am trying to figure out which cables I need to hook it up to my new Sony Bravia TV. It's my understanding that Apple made a Macbook Pro that would allow video and audio to pass through the HDMI cables but I'm not sure if that's the one I have. Do I just need the minidisplay port to HDMI or do I need something else?

I have the latest release of the 13 Macbook Pro. I have searched endlessly on the internet on ways to connect my macbook to an rca inlet on a television but find the information to be outdated or all about hdmi. I would like to run a cable(s) from my mini display port to the rca jack on my television. I only have one HD compatible television so I would like to have a more flexible solution for the rest of the aging televisions in my domicile.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have some tv shows downloaded that I'd like to watch on my HDTV. I currently have a Mini DisplayPort to HDMI Adapter and a 3.5mm male to male audio cable that I plug into the TV and the headphone jack on my MBP.
1. The audio does not work. Is there a setting somewhere I must enable?
2. Would I be better off buying some other sort of cable?
3. What are my options for displaying my MBP screen on the TV and where do I access these options? When I hook up the adapter it just extends my screen to the TV.
Perhaps I need a MBP to TV guide of some sort. I can get this done easily with my old PC but I"d really like to do it with my MBP.
I have a Macbook Aluminium late 2008 (first gen), and am looking to buy an external monitor. The ones I have my eyes on right now is the Acer 24", which comes with VGA and HDMI.
- Which cable I need to hook my Macbook up to the external monitor? Should I get a miniDisplayPort to VGA adapter or a miniDisplayPort to HDMI adapter? What is the difference?
- Does audio work if I hook it up? ie. will I get sound if I plug my headphones into my new external display (NOT into my macbook)?
- Do I have to run it as dual displays at all times? or can I close the lid of the macbook, but still have the computer running on my external display?
- If I get the new Macbook Pro (when it comes out), do I need a new cable? I heard that it runs using the thunderbolt connection, does that mean I will need to get a new thunderbolt to HDMI or VGA adapter cable?
- And lastly, do I have to buy the apple branded cable adapters? Or will other (cheaper) ones do?
Can I hook up a mac book pro to a monitor that i have?
View 3 Replies View Relatedhooking up three external monitors to my macbook pro (mid 2010).
The only serious (not homemade) solution is the Matrox TripleHead2Go DP Edition, but this solution only gives me a max resolution of 4080x768 (3x 1360x768).
Unfortunately I dont believe that would be enough to satisfy me needs.Â

I'm putting a computer in my kitchen that anybody in the house can use (kids & parents). It will be hooked up to a 24" LCD and also act as a small file server, dvd player and perhaps eyetv dvr.
I like the mini because it is small (can hide in the cabinet where spills won't get it), is cheap and uses only 13W when idle. But when I think down the road, 4 year old laptops seem a lot more useful than 4 year old mac minis. So I'm a bit torn.
So my questions are:
- Does anybody know how much power the macbook uses when "idle" (just running finder).
- Can the macbook be run with the lid closed? (I know old powerbooks used to vent hot air through the keyboard.)
(Then again, I have the computer in the kitchen so I can watch my kids on the computer. In 4 years they'll be 5 years old and probably want a laptop they could have in their own room - exactly what I want to avoid. And I'll probably upgrade my macbook pro by then anyway.)
has anyone attempted to hook the brand new MBP Unibody to a projector?
I saw many problems to hook it to an external monitor via VGA or DVI adapter... has anyone attempted it? Is it possible?

Has anyone tried to have dual monitors connected to their Macbook? I found this splitter online: http://sewelldirect.com/dvi-to-2-vga-splitter-cable.asp I want to hook two 24'' monitors up, I know you'll need the Mini-DVI to DVI converter as well just wondering if there are any issues known beforehand?
