Can I split the cable line in my room so that I may watch TV, or would this cut my download/upload bandwidth in half?

I have a Time Capsule wirelessly connected to my iMac. Since I've encountered some problems with backups because of intermittent wifi connection failures, I want to switch to a wired connection with an ethernet cable. I know I could fiddle with the wifi channels etc. but since the TC is just sitting next to my iMac anyway, I could profit from the higher bandwidth of a wired connection as well.Two questions:
1. What exactly do I have to do to make the switch? Are there any new settings I have to apply? Create a new network?
2. Will I still be able to use the wifi connection to get on the internet using my smartphone?
I just moved into my cousins house, which is a lot closer to my university. For the past year have lived about 20 miles away and fortunately now am under 3 miles away.My current situation (don't wanna call it a problem, hoping we'll find a solution) is that his WiFi network is located on one end of his house, while i'm staying on the other side. His house isn't somewhat big, def. more vast than anything i'm used to...but the WiFi is on the south side of the house. My guest bedroom and small work area is on the north side, i'm guessing 40 or 50ft away.He had WiFi using Charter Cable and won't budge drilling another hole in the middle of the house so I could get reception. Nor will he have a long cable from the south side go to even the middle of the home.

View 2 Replies View RelatedWhen you get home at your desk, put your MBP on the table plugging it to an external monitor or not, do you keep it running on WiFi or do you plug in an ethernet cable for your notebook? I am on a 25mbps line in my home and i find that when i plug in the cable my internet connection is more stable, faster and doesn't drop out sometimes. Because, sometimes on Wifi, websites take a little longer to load or it seems to not load at all. While on the ethernet cable everything is just speed of light instant.
I have also noticed that using vmware when i go away from the computer and puts windows to sleep, when i get back, it takes a while for windows to recognize the airport vmware driver and connect back to internet, while with the ethernet cable it is just instant (again). Noticed this while running windows live messenger and the time it takes to connect back. I also noticed that transferring files from my windows vista desktop computer to my macbook was alot faster on ethernet cable than on the wifi connection, even though my router supports 54mbps wifi. So are you guys satisfied with your wifi? Or do you use an ethernet cable for stability? Or am i the only one with minor wifi problems?

I have got a macbook pro and an iPhone5 .. my macbook and my iPhone connected to the same WiFi but for some reason the airplay don't work .. so I tried to use a (cable) goes from the router to the macbook .. and i turned on (sharing internet) so my macbook can become a WiFi .. from that my iPhone is connected to the WiFi (macbook pro WiFi) and the airplay was working fine .. the thing is i don't like the cable idea because my router on the first floor and my macbook on the second floor.. so any one have any tips for me .. by the way i need the airplay because i was streaming using (Reflector)

Recently switching from a PC to mac, I am still knew to the computer. I switched because I thought I wouldn't have to worry bout the mac running slow due to excess software such as virus protection. My macbook takes a very long time to load ALL internet pages. I know my connection is fine because my old computer, which is about 6 years old, runs super quick on the internet. Is there something I don't know. Are there any certain settings I should be looking at? I feel like I should save some money and just get dial-up! I do have a cable internet connection. Its wired in, not wireless, if that makes a difference.

Rebooting the wifi solves the problem. This didn't happen w/ my old macbook, and no one else in the house is having wifi connection problems.

I don't have WiFi internet at home and have an Ethernet cable plugged into my Mac Book Pro from my modem. My problem right now is, when i connect my macbook to my hp external monitor wake the computer up in closed lid mode, my internet connection is lost, and it doesn't come back unless i restart my computer.

Evey time it goes to sleep or I turn it off it forgets the fact that there is any wireless around. I have to look for the networks. I have a 2 year old macbook that just refuses to connect to my wifi, I also have 4 other apple devices that connect seamlessly. it registers the network, it joins the net work and then fails, I have had several different error messages as follows while re entering my password I get a dropdown box saying I have changed settings, this then sends me back to the preferences to start again. and then i get error message that my password is incorrect (I can confirm it is correct) I have also been to the genius bar, and we managed a connection for the duration of the visit ( a healthy reading too apparantly)they carried out a hardwear diagnoistics check and it was given a full bill of health. I was advised to insert the reinstallation disk and carry out a reinstall - I have done this and the problem is still there. In one location I my macbook pro will not connect to network vis wifi unless I click on the desired network. My preference is set to automatically join, but it does not seem to be working. It is wep pw protected by have provided the password. That is not the problem. As soon as I click on my connection it comes right on. But it will not join automatically.
