MacBook Pro :: Keeps Freezing Up - Shows Black Screen On Startup
Mar 12, 2012Recently my Mac has been extremely unstable. It keeps freezing up and hanging for no reason. Initially a 3 beep would sound off, I ran some tests like the apple hardware one and realised that one of the rams was bad. I bought 2 new sticks of ram and replaced it. Following which, the mac still freezes up and a 3 beep alarm sounded off again.
Currently, I'm trying to turn it on, no 3 beep signal is sounding off but the Mac either keeps freezing and showing a highly pixelated screen or a black screen surfaces. There is some sound coming off from the laptop as well. Each time I switch on the system, it just shows a black screen with no display.
The Mac is a 15'' 2.66 MHz i7 which was manufactured in the mid 2010s.
The 2 new sticks of ram are Strontium 1066Mhz 4Gb x 2 sticks.
In the initial stages: kernel panics were common as well.

I can hear the volume clicking as I change it and change the brightness of the keyboard, but nothing else responds. Jun 23, 2009I just read a thread on Undercover and it reminded me of a question I wanted to ask earlier this week.
I'm going to college in september and it seems as if a Kingston lock is not a good choice. There are a number of things on youtube including yanking the notebook, pulling on the lock itself and using cardboard to open the lock. This makes physical locks look bad. Would software be a good alternative? How about lojack for laptops? Apparently they'll get your laptop back regardless of where it ended up. If not, they'll give you a grand. Seems like it would be hard to do if it was chopped up like when a thief brings a car to a chop shop.

OS X :: Changed Admin - Old Users Name Still Shows As "Owner's Mac" On Login?
Jan 23, 2010I just bought a pre-owned macbook off of ebay. This is my second mac, so I'm somewhat familiar with them. Here's my problem: When I first booted it up, it never took me through the whole "new owner registration" screen that you would see on a brand new macbook, it just went straight to the desktop. I went in and changed the Admin name and info etc manually, but when the computer is shut down and booted back up, it has my name listed on the login screen, but that little tiny title above it that says "(Owner)'s Mac" still says the old owners name! Furthermore, when i access mac programs such as Front row, it still says his name also.
So my question is, where do I go to change this? Do I need to go through the whole new owner registration screen manually, and if so, will I lose all of my work that's stored on my HD?

Sep 10, 2010This is sort of a double post, but since this problem is way down in the original thread and pretty much a different problem (with no replies) I figured it might be worth a new post.
So...
On this 1.25ghz Tiger emac we picked up, the OS loads, and everything seems to work for a minute of so, but then the mouse stops working.
Actually the pointer still works, but I can't click anything, almost like the desktop is frozen. This does have a swollen capacitor, so I'm, not sure if that's the problem or if I just need to reload to OS.

I choose do perform a hardware test with the version 3A116 on a earlier Mac OS Install Disk. The test (3 times) shows an error code (after 1. test I switched memory cards), I am not able to interpret this:

PowerPC :: Screen Not Working Fine At Startup / Screen Stays Black On Startup
Apr 5, 2007My brother's iBook G4 (I think it's a 2003 model) has a problem with the screen. When the computer is turned on, the screen stays black, although the backlight is on (the apple glows). Sometimes, on start up, the screen works normally for a random amount of time before going fuzzy and then black again.
Any ideas on how to fix this? Is it likely to be a problem with the hardware in the actual computer, or just the screen? Or is it a software thing?
MacBook Pro :: Startup Screen Is Zoomed In On Startup?
Jun 19, 20126 month old MBP 15", been running 100% fine, plugged it into a projector the other day and it auto changed the screen resolution. I unplugged the device, went into settings and changed my screen resolution back to it's factory size as well as command & the minus key to make sure I wasn't zoomed in on anything.Â
I then did a system update for the following; Airport utility, Safari, Ricoh Printer, Digital Camera Raw, java, Itunes.Â
Restarted the computer as the updates had finished, then when turning back on the loading screen with the grey background, apple symbol and rotating loading symbol was zoomed in as much as the resolution would allow. So i restarted a couple more times, still the same thing - every time i turn the computer on the loading screen is massivly zoomed in, once it's done loading and moves to the log in screen it is fine.Â
I've tried plugging into the projecter again and editing my settings, that did nothing. It's like because i updated while the settings where wonky it's saved it somehow?Â

I keep all of my media on an external drive, have an apple time machine that stores the backups. I purchased the Space Gremlin and there is nothing on the hard drive that shows it's taking up that much space. The 500 GB hard drive shows only 11 GB free.

Mar 16, 2009my macbook was almost dead on power when I shut it down. I couldn't charge it because I was on a plane. Anyway, I plugged it in recently and tried starting it up, it makes the start up sound but won't get passed a blank white screen. Is there anyway to fix this? I've heard reinstalling the startup cd might work, but will I lose my files on it? All the pictures of my dog that just passed away on it, and I don't want to lose these. I just got the right cds to back them up and was going to.

Jun 19, 2012My MBP was working fine and then froze while I was on the internet. I turned it off and on again by holding down the power button. It powered on and froze on the white/gray screen with the Apple logo with the spinning wheel underneath it. I restarted it again by holding down the power button. Now it freezes on an all white/gray screen. I've tried starting it with the disk in it and holding down the "C" key and starting it and holding down the shift key after I hear the start up tone. Neither have worked.

Apr 11, 2010My August 2007 MacBook runs OSX 10.4.10. It has performed flawlessly since my daughter bought it in 2007, and perfectly after I purchased it from her last september. The other night I was surfing the web while flying on a commercial airliner. (GoGoNet or something similar) Performance was kind of slow but I attributed that to the in-air wifi, which I had never used before. Then the browser started to hang with the spinning pinwheel. Option apple escape WOULD NOT force quit safari. After a few shutdowns using only the power button, the mac hung up on startup. I hear the chime, see the apple icon, the gear turns but it never goes past that point. It may be significant that the plane was flying through scary turbulence when my problems began.
When I boot up using the mac install disk 1, I can get it to start cleanly using the C key, the D key and NO keys. But when I run the hardware diagnostic, both short and long test, the mac comes up 100% clean. But i cannot see any test for the hard drive. When I try to run disk utility, the colored pinwheel arrives and it never goes away. When I go down the road of re-installing the system software, I cannot see the target drive.
When I put my ear on the deck, just to the right of the track-pad, I can hear the hard drive quietly spinning away with regular - not random - clicks.
I see that Apple is quietly replacing these hard-drives, but the affected computers seem to have a folder/question mark on the desktop on startup, not the apple/spinning gear.
I really would like to be able to recover my photos and some files if the hard drive is going to be swapped. But I am resigned to the situation that these un-backed-up files will be forever lost.
