Can you remove the glass from the screens of the glossy MBPs? From what I gather, it's a standard glossy screen a la the white macbook under there, which might be preferable in some cases.

I see that the Macbook Air is much brighter than the 13" macbook pro (under the same ambient lighting, both set to maximum brightness). I was told the reason for this difference is because of the lack of the glass layer on the Air. Is that really true ? If so, can you please let me know if I'd be able to get the same brightness I get on the Air on the Pro also by just removing the glass layer on my 13" macbook pro. TechRestore offers such a service for $134, which is simply a subset of their service for matte replacement (I don't want the matte replacement as I like the glossy screen). But since such a service would void my warranty and return policy, I want to be really sure before getting it done with them. I'd greatly appreciate any inputs/advice.
View 24 Replies View RelatedI have a new 24" LED ACD, and while I love it, I hate it! I can't stand the glossy screen on it, as this is in my office at work, and the only way to arrange it is with a window at my back.
All I see is reflections all day, and it now gives me a headache.
So, the options I see are:
1) Revert back to my older 20" ACD
2) Try and remove the glass from the new monitor and run it without the glass and see if that.
3) Try and put on an anti-glare screen on it and pray that it works.
Has it been verified that you can remove the glass on the new 27" Cinema Displays with a couple of suction cups (like you could with the iMacs)?
I've got a few dustballs that I'd rather fix myself - I'd rather not drag it into an Apple Store.
I've seen enough discussion that I have to ask a question that's been in the back of my mind. For reference, I have the late 2008 unibody MacBook Pro 15", glossy display. I also have the 23" cinema display I've had for around 6 years (matte obviously).Working with iPhoto, iDVD, etc, the glossy is preferable. Working in text editors doing programming, reading webpages, etc the matte is preferable. My experience anyways.I've had a bunch of prints professionally framed at Aaron Brothers. They offer glass, museum glass (non glare), acrylic, and museum acrylic (in order of increasing price). The acrylic weighs much less and doesn't shatter from a fall.The difference is striking. The non glare (museum) is very clear, not like the cinema display diffuse image. From a few feet back, there is zero glare. If I move to an angle to find a glare, I can at a sharp angle, and the reflection of the ceiling light has a green tint, but generally, the print looks perfect.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI was looking at the MBPs in an Apple store and I noticed that the "matte" screen seemed to be the same display as the "glossy", just with the glass removed and a silver bezel installed.
To me it seems that Apple is charging customers an extra $50 to simply remove the glass. Anyone know if this is true?
I just bought a MacBook Pro (2.53/4GB) and I am just a tad disappointed with the graphics.
Could it be that (after much agonising) I opted for the glossy screen?
I feel that I want to adjust the contrast, but I don't know how.
1) Having a difficult time finding anything good on this. Anyone got direct comparison pics between the two on the 15"?2) Also how much brighter are the mid-2010 15" displays compared with the late-08 15" displays? IIRC the 2009 screens got a wider color gamut and more brightness than the original unibody screens.

I would expect Apple to make the 2010 standard res. screens worse in quality and earn more money since they have the higher res. available. I really like the 2009 glossy screen, but i have to be sure it is exactly the same this year. If they did something like that it's typical Apple.
View 2 Replies View Relatedthere is a small chip behind the glass of my 27" imac. It's about the size of a small crumb or the eye of a small needle. It's hard to see, but it's definitely there. Today is my last day to get the imac replaced or repaired. I have a feeling if I bring it in that they will see there's no reason to swap out the entire imac, and if there is I would have to wait awhile because it's a custom high end one so they don't have the specsI'm worried if they swap the glass that it's just some 19 year old kid that does it and he won't be careful with the screen and will get dust, finger prints, etc. on the glass making it worse.
View 3 Replies View Relatedas an extension to my question regarding RAM utilization, I've decided to upgrade my RAM. I went through the process of removing the underside of my MBP. After taking the screws out and mentally marking which slot they came out of (some are of different size), I pulled the lid up at the black trim area (the "neck" of the display mount) as this was the easiest way to get a non-damaging grip on the metal underside -- read: I avoided using a screw driver on the lid. As I started to lift, I was surprised at the amount of force I needed to use in order to remove the lid; something near the center of the cover was still holding the lid to the underside of the body. In fact, the amount of force I needed to use made me pause to question if I missed an important step other than simply removing the screws. I decided to "go for it" and applied more pressure while pulling the lid up and away from the body and heard a "pop" noise.

One simple question really; is the screen glossy or matte?
I notice that there is not an option to chose whether it's glossy or matte when configuring online . My MacBook Pro is a 2007 C2D one (one of the last with the silver screen bezel) and I had them both side-by-side in the store and chose matte. I know that these days Apple call it "AntiGlare" and charge you for the privilege (and it's not just the screen that's glossy, the whole surround is black glass), but I'm definitely gonna pay the extra for it on my next MacBook Pro .
But for the MacBook Air without having an option.... I've got a bad feeling that I'm gonna order it online and then when it comes find that it's got a stupid ****ing glossy screen and all I can see when using it outside is my ugly mug in the reflection .
So yeah, on a scale of AntiGlare MacBook Pro to Glossy MacBook Pro where would you put the new MacBook Air's screen?
this might sound a bit strange but I hope someone on here may be able to help me, I've placed my 2007 MacBook Pro for sale but I've recently had enquiries from a buyer with a question that I can't answer in that of whether the screen is Glossy or Matte. Now I never realised there were two options thinking it was a more recent development in the product line but after some research I discovered that it was an option when the machine was purchased. The only problem is that I brought it second hand and no information was included to enable me to work out this detail, so is there a visual analysis I could perform or are there any images I could post so that people would be able to work out which type of screen I have?
The model of MBP is the Mid/Late 2007, Merom Based 17" MacBook Pro with the Hi-Res Screen outputting at 1900 x 1200.
give a plausible and vaguely-scientific (read: the plural of anecdote isn't data) as to HOW Glossy screens hurt color accuracy.
View 3 Replies View RelatedOver the past few months of perusing my way through the forums I have noticed a lot of people prefer matte over glossy.....Of course, we all have personal preference - but it just seems a LOT of people always say get a matte screen.
Why is this? I personally prefer the glossy. I'm on a 24" Alu iMac now with the glossy display, checked out the MBP in store and prefer the glossy...
I like the glossy for the high picture quality, I did do a test side by side of matte and glossy, and glossy just looked a lot better. Reflections can be a pain at times, but its not too hard to just move your display a few inches
Anyone have advice on regards to what screen type to order with a new MBP 17"?
I would like as much color accuracy as possible, but when I read the apple specs they make it sound like the glossy is better at showing colors...

I just got back from checking out the new MBAs at the Apple Store. I know that there are a lot of discussions about the power and capability of the system, and the sacrifices made for its thinness. My thing is that I need a 13 inch or smaller system because I commute with it every day, but I absolutely hate the glass screens on the MBP. Has anyone else noticed that the glossy but not glassy display on the MBAs is actually much better with reflections? I think that alone may be enough of a reason to switch from a MBP to a MBA.

View 11 Replies View RelatedI have a 15" uMBP with the glassy screen, and I love it. I think with the glass, the colors pop, blacks are blacker, everything seems crisp. I really like the black border too.
I considered going matte after having a matte early 2008 non-unibody classic MBP, but I didn't like the silver border with the black rubber gasket going around and standing out so I went for the glassy.
For the most part, I'm happy. I just hate the occasional reflections, but I think the uMBP design is meant to have the black border and the silver border antiglare screen is an afterthought in design.
Should I get a film screen? Or will it greatly reduce the crispness of my picture? I wish I could have a black border uMBP that's crisp but doesn't produce as much glare...
Aside from more screen real estate which is not that important to me, will i really notice the difference between std and hi res glossy in the 15" MBP? I am coming from a late 2007 core 2 2.2 ghz system that I mostly used for photoshop work, email, web surfing and for watching movies once in awhile, so I think for me the deciding factor comes down to will the the hires display have a significant enough difference over the std display on my photos?

I realize there are countless other threads out there on the glossy vs matte topic and a lot of people are either "matte all the way!" or "glossy has more vibrant colors!" but almost none of them give anything from the perspective of a photographer. I'm going for the hi-res (of course) and would like to know what PHOTOGRAPHERS (or visual designers) think of the color accuracy of either.
I'm assuming I should calibrate it to get the best accuracy (because, yes, I know that laptop screens will never give the best results), so, does anyone know of any really great calibration apps (preferably with screen recognition)?
I have a late 09 uni 15" and have had my matte screen replaced 4 times already. I have been looking at my friends mac w/ glossy (same as mine, just gloss) and looks nicer in my opinion. Is there a way I could get it switched at the Apple Store?
