I lost a hard drive with important personal data on a trip overseas. There is no way of getting that hard drive back. However I have an MacBook Pro which once had that same data stored. "Once" because I've reformatted it and installed OSX. I know this is a very tall order to recover data, but is there any computer forensics tricks or any way to get get that data back?
View 1 RepliesI recently upgraded to snow leopard because i needed to install logic pro and I decided to format the hard drive, I did my back up but there was to much music on it so I did a couple of dvd's just for the music I compressed them (.zip) with stuffit one of them did work but the other one where it has all of Itunes library doesn't unzip. I wonder if I can recover it from time machine?
View 1 Replies View RelatedMy ibook g4 (1.42, 14") died recently - I tried a few fixes, they worked for 30minutes or so, then it died again. Seems to be one of these logic board/graphics cards solder problems. Anyway, while it annoyed me quite a bit, it was a couple of years old and allows me to justify buying a macbook (when apple get around to releasing leopard).
I had been making regular backups of my drive using carbon copy cloner, but the last time I did it was about 2 months ago. Not devastating, but ideally I'd like to get most recent stuff back as well.
Is there an easy way to get data from the ibook g4 or am I resigned to ripping open the case, removing the HD and buying a ATA/USB adaptor?
I have an ibook 10.4. Its my girlfriends she gave it to me to use since my PC broke. She has one of the newer ones. But a lot of her photos were saved in iphoto. So I'm not sure what happened but I restarted the computer and now itunes is reset and iphoto is reset, microsoft word isnt on the computer anymore. Most other files are still there. But I know she is going to kill me for losing all these photos! I bought this digitial picture frame from Brookstones I'm going to put pictures of us on it and send it to her for V-day. It came with a CD to load the software on it. It works with both mac and PC. It was working fine then I went out to the bar for a little bit. I had used the software fine and already uploaded a few photos before the bar. So I come home to reopen the software and its taking forever, the icon is just bouncing up and down. So I restart the computer. When it comes back the dock is larger, itunes and iphoto is reset. WTF happened?! and how can i change it back? I know PC's have that option where you can revert back to an earlier time.

Drive is greyed out in disk utility. It was not written over however, which I am hoping is a good thing.I have little to no experience with data recovery so some advice on what app to use would be swell.
View 4 Replies View RelatedAfter some warning signs in the last few weeks (not ejected properly, drive icon disappearing from desktop) my Lace BigDisk Extreme 1TB Drive is now seemingly gone forever. No backup.
Not ejected properly warnings were inappropriate as I never unplugged it ... icon disappearing - I simply pulled to power supply pin out of the back and re-inserted it and it came back. Now it-s gone. Lacie has sent a new power supply to me but it did not solve the problem ... the power supply brick light blinks very faintly .. when I pull the p/s pin out of the drive, the power supply brick lights up solid green.
This type of failure seems to be a common occurence. Anyways, I need to recover the data if possible. My options seem to be:
1. Pay a data recovery service $600.
2. Buy the current version of the Lacie that I have and swap out the disks, so that I can at least get to the data. I believe that the current version is the:
d2 Quadra Hard Disk 1 TB eSATA/FireWire800/FireWire400/USB 2.0 .. does anyone know for sure?
3. Buy some other lower priced enclosure with usb or firewire interface to get to the data (but I don't have a clue what to buy)
Does anyone know if either options 2 or 3 will work and which would be the least painful to deal with? I'm not a hardware guy
Lastly, I cannot get the screw off of the back of my dead Lacie drive .. it appears to be a small phillips head but it turns out it's not. What tool do I need to get it off? Or is it opened up some other way?
If anyone could guide me thru the steps to recovery it would be much appreciated!
I have a bad hard drive. I am now booting up from an external HD(passport) and all seems to be going well.I have another external HD (G drive) connected running time machine.
Can take my backed up data from the time machine external HD (G drive), and send it to the Passport and get all my files and programs back?Or will an external Time Machine drive only back up to the macs internal drive?
I recently installed ilife 09 into my imac but I cant take advantage of the face detection feature. I deleted my jpg files in the data folder because I thought it was a duplicate file. I didn't know when downloading pictures from a digital camera, iphoto creates two jpg files. One in data folder and other in original folder. I tried copying the jpg files from original folder into the data folder but I'm still having issues. Is there any way I can recover my jpg files from data folder?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI am looking into all sorts of backup options. Thinking of getting a Lacie 2big 2TB RAID1 (effectively 1TB) firewire external HDD for backup needs. I am not concerned about speed as it is meant for archival purposes only.
Almost ordered one when I found another way to do it is daisy chaining 2 separate 1TB Lacie firewire HDD in RAID1 configuration using Mac disk utility. The advantage being 1> Lacie 2big 2TB HDDs are notorious for being noisy but the Lacie 1TB HDDs are fanless hence super quiet. 2> having two separate DDs+enclosures gives me two independently failing systems for the non-HDD hardware; meaning for the 2big 2TB RAID1 disk if the power supply or the built-in RAID controller card fails then I will have to buy another similar setup to access my data.
My question is in the second senario of daisy chaining 2 X 1TB HDDs in RAID1; If one drive goes kaput will I be still able to mount the healthy drive and retrive my data simply by connecting it to the mac thru firewire? Or, do I need to mirror my data back to a new 1TB before getting access to my data?
Obviously I haven't had the chance to use any RAID setup before, so comments are welcome, or if anyone is using such a setup what could be the other drawbacks that I am not thinking of.
just a lil information needed here. It seems to me that everytime i format and zero out my external harddrive the time needed to zero it out gets longer andd longer, the first time took roughly 3 hours, then it jumped to 5 and now its at 7 hours. is this normal??? why is this happening am i damaging the drive by zeroing it out?

View 4 Replies View Relatedjust received my brand new iMac 27" i7 today (2.93Ghz /2TB HDD + 256GB SSD/12GB RAM (4GB stock, although I upgraded 8GB more)) and I couldn't be happier. It's absolutely wonderful although it really burnt my wallet! I have managed to successfully install Windows XP via Boot Camp and have both Mac OSX & Windows running natively. I am very suprised that XP can see all the hard drives available within the mac itself even though they are HFS although I assume I cannot write onto them.
I believe I am at the stage where I would like to partition the 2TB HDD as discussed previously in my previous questions on this board. I would like 1TB for mac data storage (Mac OS extended) but I would like the other 1TB for Windows data storage (NTFS), however, this does not seem possible in the disk utility There is, however, an option for 'free space' or ExFat (FAT 32). Would I be right in saying I could format the hard drive as 2 partitions, partition 1 being Mac OS Extended and the 2nd Partition as free space or ExFat via Disk Utility. Once that is complete, I boot up XP and right click on the 2nd Parition which is ExFAT or Free Space and reformat the partition as NTFS? Does that work and make sense or is that stupidity?
(also on a side note, completely off topic, does anyone know how to get the magic mouse working in XP? I've got the keyboard (wired) working fine, however, the mouse doesn't seem to commicate. I've followed the tutorial/guides of adding the bluetooth mouse but when I tick the box "keyboard, mouse and misc functions (HID)" it states "access denied". I've tried several times and the device that i've just added disappears?
i have a hard drive that began as a formatted win NTFS drive, which i formatted with hfs a couple of times to do some hackintosh experimenting. apparently i missed one of the document folders that were important to me when i did the backup to a bigger drive of the windows files. i am looking into data recovery software but i don't know much about it. the format has changed, and it has been formatted a couple of times. is it still possbile to use data recovery software and are there any recommendations? if anyone feels i have a better chance getting this answered in a different part of the forum, let me know.

I've found that I have to format to FAT32, which I think i can just about manage (yes, im a girl) but my concern is, if i format through the MAC, will i then lose what's on the hard disk as the tab says 'erase'? I have a lot of images on the hard disk so am a little petrified! Any advice for this really basic question would be appreciated!
View 7 Replies View RelatedI'm a really recent switcher, with a long history with PCs. So far, the experiences have been great, but tonight, my PC history became a liability. I'm pretty handy with a Windows-based, so I know my way around the system quite well. But I was working on my Mac tonight. Having made my G4 PM my server, I was starting to move a folder from one drive to another, when decided that I wanted to reconsider where I was putting the folder. The process cancelled successfully and I had about 1 MB at the destination, and 50 GB still left on the source.
Having canceled it, I wanted to remerge my folder back to the original folder. Simple, right? I dragged the smaller folder onto the 50 GB folder, and OS X prompted me to replace. There is a similar dialog on Windows - in fact, it is titled "Confirm Folder Replace" - that merges the folders together. I didn't think twice about it all and clicked yes... And OS X promptly deleted my 50 GB folder and left the 1 MB folder in its place. My bad. Having said that, what's the best way to recover my 50 GB worth of information? I haven't mucked with the machine so much, so I'm not afraid that the data's being overwritten. But how the heck do I get back to it?

The program I was using ( Data Rescue 3 ) renamed all my .jpegs in its search of my deleted files. So when I searched for the one I wanted not only did it not come up, but I was searching through 40,000+ jpegs one by one. Didn't get too far before I gave that up.
Is this normal for a data recovery program? Since I deleted them, it deleted the file structure for it so it renames them?
And has anyone successfully restored a deleted item? Just wanna save a few jpegs, that I was attached to.
I've never backed up my HD in the 4+ years of owing a mac so thats out of the option unfortunately. Looks like I know what I'll as for for christmas. An external.
I just accidently closed out of a powerpoint file I was working on. It had been auto saving but it is not in the auto recovery section. Just wonder if there is any way to get it back I just lost about 3 hours of work.

I took my computer to the Genius Bar and the guy said my drive was dead but said I could possibly recover some of my files with an external hard drive. How exactly would I go about doing this? I've searched through posts but haven't really found anything specific. Do I go through Disk Utility or do I need a third party program like Data Rescue? He said to just boot from an external drive and then browse my old hard drive (which does show up in Disk Utility) and move things over.

First off I would like to say that I did try searching (I know it's hard to believe that coming from a member with no posts) but its difficult to search for my problem because I don't really know how to describe it in keywords and get results. This probably isn't the right section but once again I'm not really sure how to describe my problem.
Here is the story. I primarily use Windows 7 on my computer through Bootcamp. (I also have Linux Mint 10 on my computer, don't think either of these are part of the problem but I thought I should let you know) I have had both of these installed for a while, and switch between them with no problems until yesterday. I booted into Snow Leopard (10.6.5) to update my iPhone firmware. The first time I booted into it, it would only load my wallpaper. I rebooted and this time I got my dock and task bar, but was unable to do anything other than move the mouse. I got right down to business and started the formatting process. I put the Snow Leopard disk in, but that somehow kicked my computer into action. I was able to use it, but it was very slow. So I uninstalled my themes thinking this was the problem. the themes required me to log off so I did that but it froze from there. Then I rebooted and tried the Snow Leopard disk trick again. It didn't work, but my computer was responsive after a few minutes (I don't think the disk had anything to do with it becoming responsive either, just think my computer was being slow) After that I ran Onyx thinking it would fix all of my problems. It didn't.
From here I started the formatting process. The first time around I really messed up (it was 2am and I had only gotten three hours of sleep, give me a break) instead of doing a clean install I accidentally did an upgrade. I woke up to find my computer still being it's slow self. I then spent the entire day today, formatting, reinstalling multiple times. It was slow even when I didn't restore from a backup. No matter what I would do my Mac would be unbearably slow (it wouldn't even load the welcome video, just show a blue screen while playing the music)
Here is the part that baffles me. My Windows partition still works (haven't tried my Linux Partition but I assume it also works) I don't think that my multiple partitions are the problem because I have had them all working since about July (I even upgraded Linux 9 to 10 two months ago without a problem)
I don't think I'm technologically inept but this is beyond me. My next step will be to replace my hard drive, but I have low hopes for that doing much, unless bad sectors are my problem (dunno if that could even be a culprit)
Hopefully I can fix this problem without sending it into Apple. I do have Apple Care but I doubt that warranty actually does anything, they'll just blame it on me so I have to spend another $1,000 to fix it or buy a new computer. Lets just say it won't be another Mac.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI had to format my Macbook HDD, and I couldn't use the install disk. So I pulled it out of my macbook, put it in my linux computer, formatted it to FAT, and put it back in. I tried various ettings, but nothing worked; when I tried to reinstall OSX from the install disk, I would get some form of a flashing older with a ? mark on it, a cross in a circle, or it just being white forever, this would change depedning on when I tried different formats and methods of booting(holding c and option).So what is a software for Linux I could use to format the HDD to MAC OS Extended Journal so I can install OSX back onto that thing? Or some other method that could allow me to achieve a reinstall?
