My computer was locked by a pop-up that resembled safari. It had "applesecurity" and a phone number to call. I removed it by reading through the community. How can I determine if malware was installed on my computer? From what I read it doesn't seem like a good idea to install anti-virus software.

Apple on Wednesday afternoon released version 3.1.1 of its Safari web browser to address a handful of security issues, including one widely publicized vulnerability that allowed a MacBook Air to be compromised during a recent security conference.
The 39MB release, available for both Macs and Windows PCs, is recommended for all Safari users and includes improvements to stability, compatibility and security.
Specifically, Apple said the update patches four security issues, including a heap buffer overflow that existed within the browser's WebKit framework for handling JavaScript regular expressions.
The issue was reported by Charlie Miller, who discovered and exploited the vulnerability on a MacBook Air to win a $10,000 prize at last month's CanSecWest security conference.
The Safari 3.1.1 update also addressed a second issue within WebKit's handling of URLs containing a colon character in the host name. By exploiting that vulnerability, a hacker could use a maliciously crafted URL to lead a cross-site scripting attack, Apple said.
Two other issues with the Safari application itself were also addressed, though they concerned only the PC version of the browser. One of those issues made it possible for a maliciously crafted website to control the contents of a user's address bar, while the other made it possible for maliciously crafted website to cause arbitrary code execution or the Safari application to unexpectedly quit.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI know Macs don't get viruses. Here's my issue. I'm running OSX 10.6.3 with Safari 4.0.5. About 5-6 times a day, running Safari, I get the message I'm attaching to this post. It's a fake popup -- obviously fake, because it tells me it's "Windows Internet Security," and gives me a virus warning. The Safari screen behind the image is grayed out, so the message isn't a real popup -- it's part of the screen.
Note:
- This occurs on mainstream webpages, including google search results pages, Yahoo, and the Wall Street Journal.
- The only MS products on my computer are Office for Mac apps, which I've had for years w/o problem. They are not running when the problem occurs.
- I can click close on the Safari window (not the red button on the warning) or the back button, and the msg goes away.
- I cannot click on other items on the page when the message is there.
- [edit] Also, I've reset Safari, clearing the cache and the cookies. It's only been happening for about a week, but it happens very frequently now.
Again, I know macs don't get viruses, but does anyone have any helpful suggestions for getting rid of this?
One of the pop-window in our web- application is not showing the vertical scroll bar in safari 5.0.5 only. This is on Snow Leopard. The scroll bar appears in later versions of safari like safari 5.1.1. etc.

About a week ago, we accidentally installed what we think is a bad version of a flash player when attempting to register a rewards card. We un-installed the software as soon as we realized it was not the correct website for the rewards card. Since then, we are getting a flashing pop-up ad in the right column of the browser as well as a video window that pops-up from left bottom of browser and then multiple windows in Safari will just open.

Apple Mail has been locking up my system consistently when either receiving/syncing operations occur w/ IMAP mail. It's hard to trigger it but eventually I'll try to pull up a new message and.. bam. For it its just limited to IMAP, I'm not quite sure.

I am having trouble with fonts in safari, in the advanced menu --> special needs --> never use fonts smaller than. I cant change this font, its locked to zero. What can I do? I use an external hard drive for Time Machine backups and to store some larger video files in a folder called Videos. The Videos folder on the external drive is now locked and I can't unlock it. I go to Get Info, hit the lock icon and enter my password, but the "Locked" checkbox is greyed out in the General section. In the Sharing and Permissions section, instead of displaying my name, it says "Fetching . . ." and I can't change the Privilege from "Write Only".Â

Security Update 2010-006 was issued Monday afternoon. It applies to Mac oS X 10.6.4 and Mac OS X Server. 10.6.4. The 1.93MB file is available through Software Update or direct from Apple. The security update is recommended for all users of Snow Leopard, and it addresses an issue where a remote attacker could access shared folders on a system, as long as they knew the name of an account name on that system. By default, file sharing is not enabled on a Mac, meaning the issue would only affect those who have the service turned on. The original problem was caused by an error handling issue in AFP Server within Mac OS X 10.6.4. The issue does not affect systems running a version of the operating system earlier than Snow Leopard.

Regardless, here it is: [URL] I for one am not going to bother. When my OS X is getting the same amount of viruses, trojans, and spyware that my last Windows machine had when I abandoned it, that's the day I switch to Linux. The built-in security of OS X was half the reason I switched in the first place.
