Jul 1, 2014I'm just curious how to start boosting my edit speeds. Is it possible to by a mac pro and connect it via thunderbolt to create a sort of networked video editing system?

OS X :: AirPort Express And WDS Network Not Boosting Signal?
Dec 24, 2009I want it to provide a boost to the signal in the basement for my touch. As well as stream music from my laptop. The issue Im having is that the music keeps on cutting out. The newer one this is listed under is working fine, but on the other side of the room, it is setup to Extend the 'n' network (which I assume means allow my laptop better signal in the basement.)
The older one is on a b/g network, which I setup as a WDS network and then setup the express as a WDS relay, which I assumed would provide signal strength for the b/g network in the house (so we are running b/g & n). But setting it up as a relay it still loses connection with the laptop (I am assuming this is with the b/g network itself) and I believe that the touch's WiFi connection also drops with the music, because it is all the b/g network.
The b/g network trickles into the basement, but I assumed with the b/g touch setup as a WDS Relay, that it would strengthen the signal for my touch and ALSO keep the signal strong between the laptop and the express (Im guessing they are talking over b/g). But after being setup as a WDS relay the music is still dropping, and I only assume the touch's wifi signal is dropping as well! I also had to setup the ENTIRE b/g network as WDS because I did not get an 'extend range signal'.

Jun 2, 2010I have been working on a project in iMovie for a few days, and it has been working perfectly. Today, I opened up my project and I could not play the project (the red line would move, but no picture would show up in the upper right hand corner box) and ALL of the options in the "share" tab were gray and unable to click them. Many options in the "edit" and "file" tabs were unable to be clicked as well.
Another project i completed months ago is working perfectly. The clips in the events play/show up on the window in the upper right hand corner
MacBook :: Fan Speeds Not Detected?
Feb 4, 2010Using both smcFanControl and istat, I cannot get a reading on my fan speeds. I can hear my exhaust fan spinning, but these programs tell me it is always at 000 rpm. Also, I don't think the fan control is working, as I don't hear an increase in fan speed when I make adjustments.
Does anyone know how I can get these apps to recognize my exhaust fan?

Aug 28, 2010I find 90% of the time I watch a YouTube video (standard def, normal sized) my MacBook gets hot and the fans spin up. Most of the time they'll go to ~4200rpm. Yet the other 10% of videos, I stay at 1800rpm and 50C. How is this possible? Both times I've just had Firefox open.

Jun 12, 2010My girlfriend just got a new MacBook Pro and I've been helping her transfer software and such to her computer from my MacBook Pro. When I was transferring games to a USB 2.0 flash drive (it was only 25% full and it is 2GB), it was freezing up when transferring multiple things. So, I stopped everything, and transferred everything one at a time. Well, it took between 5-10 minutes to transfer a 50MB game! When I plugged the drive into her computer it took all but 30 seconds to transfer. Is this difference accounted for by the .14 GHz processor bump from my 2.26 to her 2.4? Or should I be concerned about this slow speed? My computer is little over a year old now and I've already had the logic board replaced.

Sep 4, 2010I have this odd problem on my i5 MBP. When I have no external drives attached AJA System test reports my SSD speed at about 227mb/s read and write. When I plug in a USB external drive the SSD reports the same speed. When I plug in a FW800 drive the speeds jumo to 234 - 245mb/s. When I unplug the FW800 drive they go back down.

Nov 1, 2010I'm beginning to wonder if Apple put a lousy Airport card in the new MBA. No matter what the wifi hotspot, I get downloads of 2MB. I just bought a new Airport Extreme at home and I really thought the MBA would be faster.
Am I missing something here? Do I have to "match up" the MBA with my Extreme to use the fast "N" connection? Or is there some network setting to tweak on the new MBA?

Nov 20, 2010I have a new MBA (4GB), which I am very pleased with but I can't figure out why its wifi transfer speeds seem much slower than my Mac Pro. The MBA gets a max of about 250 kb/s while the Mac Pro gets over 1000. I'm wondering whether there's some adjustment that would speed up the MBA.

Jan 10, 2011I am looking to buy my first mac in the coming months. I have found that the Air is quite appealing, with perhaps one flaw. The most extreme program I will be running will be Finale 2011. It comes with a sampling of Garritan Personal Orchestra. GPO's site lists the minimum requirement for the processor to be 1.8 GHz. Does this mean that the app will always need the full 1.8 in order to run well? I assume that it wouldn't. If anyone has any personal experience with this app, it would be great to know how it typically runs. The 13 inch Air comes with 1.86 Ghz. So, if I have email, internet, and basic things like that running in the background, will that Macbook Air run successfully?

Jun 7, 2010So I've got a new 15 inch i7 MBP. SSD, 8 Gigs of ram.. it's awesome. The machine itself is insane. Crazy crazy fast. However, it's not nearly as fast in terms of WiFi speeds as my previous Macbook Pro. Using Unison to download usenet files, I was getting about 5 megs/second (I'm in Holland, our internet is crazy fast). With the new one, I'm getting about 500k/sec. I suppose it could be a coincidence and something could be wrong with the network, but it's been this way for days. Anyone have any idea what might be slowing things down? Could something be wrong, or would it just not work at all if that were the case? Hoping I don't have to send it in for service...

Aug 29, 2010I download a lot of things and like high speeds, especially when I should be getting them.
The majority of the time my MacBook Pro downloads at about 1.7-1.8mb/s (as I have a 15MB/s internet service) which is terrific! I sit up in my room, a floor higher than the router and download away at great speeds.
But, if I go to download something on the Mini (and this only seems to be happening lately, oddly enough) it barely ever hits 1mb/s, is normally at 400-500kb/s and drops to as low as 90kb/s sometimes!
What can be done about this?

Dec 9, 2009I have a macbook pro, intel 2.4ghz core 2 duo, running snow leopard.My default speed for smcfancontrol is set to 4000rpm for both fans. I turn it on when i feel things are gettin a bit hot and I dont have my laptop cooler fan underneath.
I noticed something, when I quit smcfancontrol, shouldnt the fans revert back to default speed? I checked with iStatpro and saw that, even after quitting smc, the speeds of the fans are still at 4000rpm.After doing an SMC Reset, the default fan speed as stated by iStatpro is 2000rpm. As soon as I fire up smcfancontrol and quit it right after, the fans stay at 4000rpm. Even after i power cycle (reboot & power off/on) the mbp, the fans are still stuck at 4000rpm.
I feel this will wear out my fans a lot faster, I hardly ever need the fans at faster than 2000rpm because I use a laptop cooler 90% of the time.Is this a normal issue? Or a bug? Anyone else have this problem?

Apr 29, 2012i have newish MBP and iMac. I also run several windows 7 based pc's. Over the last couple of weeks the download speed on both mac's has declined badly. Trying to download drivers for an HP printer yesterday and was downloading at around 25kbps on both macs, ended up downloading on windows pc at around 800kbps instead, same with any other downloads, was getting over 1.2mbps on windows last night whilst my macs struggle toexceed 30kbps making them almost unusale. I am a relative newcomer to apple, love build quality and feel but am nor too happy with this situation, have tried using different internet connections too - tethering to my cell, same result - 2 different machines so it seems to me the issue sits somewhere within Lion.

Jun 8, 2012I have my 2011 17" macbook hooked up via a Moshi HDMI adapter to a 24" Acer 1080p monitor... While the image shows properly it makes the computer completely unuseable. I can't play videos and it lags up the machine really bad. I don't get it... i paid $3000+ for this machine and it can't output a smooth HDMI signal without crushing the system?

May 6, 2012My computer is a MacBook Pro running Mac OS X Version 10.7.3, 2.2 GHz Intel Core i7 with 4GB memory. Start-up has become somewhat erratic. Consistently, if I close the lid on the computer it won't restart when I reopen it. I'll have to hold the power button down for about 15 seconds, let up and then press it again. Sometimes restarting after a shutdown the computer will go through the long start-up I associate with a crash shutdown. Sometimes login start-up items don't start up. Sometimes I have to click somewhere on the screen to make the menu bar at the top of the screen visible. Overall, unexpected things keep happening. Although I don't think it probably relates, Chrome is my primary browser.

Mac Pro :: Different Speeds On 2 Identical Drives?
Nov 13, 2010I have 2 WD Caviar Black drives that are installed in my Mac Pro. Both show the exact same part number in Disk Utility, both are less than half full, both verify fine with Disk Utility. However one shows 125-130 MB/s RW with AJA and the other only delivers 90 MB/s. What gives? Just a sub-standard drive? THey are in adjacent bays in the MP, used as is - nothing changed. They are OEM drives thru Amazon from a few months ago. Both were erased and formatted prior to putting them in the MP a few weeks ago.

Also, is it possible to slow down the download rate.. but keep the upload rate the same? Tried looking for products which can achieve this but can't seem to find any.
PowerPC :: G5 Freezes During Startup Fan Speeds Up?
Aug 21, 2008My computer crashed today and hasn't been able to boot back up since. It gets to the grey screen with the Apple logo and stops. The fan then ramps itself up to overdrive.
I've started it up in target disk mode and repaired it using Diskwarrior on my macbook. It had to repair quite a bit and then it showed up on the desktop of the laptop. I can read, write and pull from it. I then ejected the powermac and started it up again to find the same problem persisting.
