Mac Pro :: Different Speeds On 2 Identical Drives?

Nov 13, 2010

I have 2 WD Caviar Black drives that are installed in my Mac Pro. Both show the exact same part number in Disk Utility, both are less than half full, both verify fine with Disk Utility. However one shows 125-130 MB/s RW with AJA and the other only delivers 90 MB/s. What gives? Just a sub-standard drive? THey are in adjacent bays in the MP, used as is - nothing changed. They are OEM drives thru Amazon from a few months ago. Both were erased and formatted prior to putting them in the MP a few weeks ago.

OS X :: Two Identical Hard Drives Not Calculating As Identical

Sep 19, 2009

10.5.8 Power PC G5

I have two identical external firewire "archive" hard drives. One serves as a safety copy of important data and the other serves as a safety of the safety. Both drives are identical models of identical size purchased at the same time, installed in identical enclosures, formatted the same way and when originally formatted showed an identical amount of available space on each drive. When archiving is needed, important data is copied to both drives. So after the double copying of data, they have the exact same material. They are now about 1/2 full with supposed identical files.

However, in the finder one drive shows about 3 gigs worth of available space more than the other. I have used a couple of utilities (such as Toast's compare utility and Disk Warrior) to compare the drives and see what is causing the discrepancy. While they do have the most minor differences in some hidden files, the difference is only a few megabytes and nowhere near the 3 gig discrepancy.

Any thoughts on why there is such a big difference in finder's calculation?

Mac Pro :: Very Slow Transfer Speeds With External Hard Drives Through Firewire And USB?

Nov 30, 2008

My external drives transfer very slowly on my MacPro. I've been searching for answers and have turned up very little.

Just to make a note, I measured my disk speeds with both AJA System Test and copying files between drives and reading the Disk Activity in Activity Monitor.

I have 3 external drives, all MyBook Premium or Professional, 1x 500GB, 1x 1TB and 2x 1TB in RAID 0. I had them on Firewire 400 and the RAID 0 2TB one on Firewire 800. My transfers on FW were all around 24MB/sec on all drives (much less than what I should be getting with FW400). I then read somewhere that the FW bus on the MacPro uses the slowest speed connected for all FW connections. So I unplugged everything but the FW800 Raid 0 drive and my transfer rate jumped to 40-60MB/sec. This is much better, but still about half or so of what I expect it should be producing from an external RAID 0 setup.

To keep my FW800 backup drive faster, I've plugged the other two into USB2.0. The transfer speeds on both drives are now hideous, around 10-15MB/sec. This is so slow, but I'm not sure what to try to fix my speeds.

The HD's in the external drives are all 7200rpm, and all should be transferring at a higher rate. Do you have any suggestions or ideas? Ideally I'd like to get everything transferring at rates they should be transferring at, but I'll settle with my current FW800 speed of 40-60MB/sec if I can get my other two drives transferring at a non-snail pace.

Is this a common issue? I can't believe I'm the only one plugging multiple external hard drives into their Mac Pro. I hope someone has a fix or solution for this. I'm all ears!

System: Mac Pro (early 2008) Mac OS X (10.5.5) 3.2Ghz 8-core - 16GB Ram - 4x1TB SATA - GeForce 8800GT - Dell 30" 3008WFP A02 - Gateway 21" FPD2185W - 3xMyBook external drives

I know the 24" ACD is LED and a slightly different screen to the iMac, the question I have his will I be able to get the screens to look pretty much identical i.e. brightness, colours or will I have to get something to calibrate the screens?

MacBook Pro :: Run Into Large File Transfer Using Thunderbolt Between Two Identical?

May 31, 2012

I have two MacBook Pros running 10.7.4. I wanted to copy one iPhoto library from one device to the other using a new Thunderbolt cable. The file is approximately 60GB. When I copy a small file of 1.0 to 2.0 BG in size, the transfer is incredibly fast -- as in seconds.

When I try to transfer the large file (60GB), the transfer is very slow, and Finder says it will take 12 hours. Oh, and I am not running any anti-virus software.

OS X Mavericks :: (10.9.2) Does Apple Mail Filter Identical Emails?

I have a curious question:  Does Apple Mail filter identical mails?

More precisely, I am expecting a number of mails that are identical, except they arrive from different mailing lists.

However, I can only see one of them.

So, I was wondering whether Apple mail has some "intelligence" built in that would filter out the others.

App Store :: Apple Id Password Rules : "Not Contain More Than 3 Consecutive Identical Characters"

Feb 8, 2012

Rule #4 of the AppleID password restrictions states "Not contain more than 3 consecutive identical characters" -Your rule is actually "Not contain 3 or more consecutive identical characters".  "more than 3" would allow 3 consecutive characters, but it turns red ( invalid ) if this is attempted. Also, rule #1 states "Have at least one letter", which in standard English would include Upper and Lower case letters, but Apple's rule requires it to be "Have at least one lower case letter", while rule #2 "Have at least one capital letter" does correctly specify requiring at least one upper case.

OS X :: Are Solid-state Drives Faster Than Hard Disk Drives?

Sep 13, 2009

I'm looking at the specs page for the MacBook Pro and it reads this...

Your MacBook Pro comes standard with a 5400-rpm Serial ATA hard drive. Choose a hard drive with a faster speed for greater performance. Or you can choose a solid-state drive that offers enhanced durability.

Basically suggesting that the HDD option has a performance advantage over the SSD, but is this the case? I always thought SSDs could read & write quicker because they use solid-state flash memory as opposed to hard disks.

I want to go with the 256GB SSD but I want to know how it ranks in speed.

MacBook :: Fan Speeds Not Detected?

Does anyone know how I can get these apps to recognize my exhaust fan?

Mac Mini :: Different Cache Speeds - Put More RAM

Jul 6, 2010

I have a Mac Mini Core Duo 1.66. Macs are VERY expensive here, and I know I cannot change my crappy Intel 950GMA video card. So What else can I do? I've read about people using Core 2 Duo processors, which one is the best I could get for my Mini? The processors aren't that expensive here, but there's the fact that a lot of them use different cache speeds. Also, with another processor, could I put more RAM in it, since my mini is limited to 2GB (it came with 512MB and I replaced it with 2 after 1 week). Anyone could tell me which is the best processor I could put in such a machine, since I'm stuck with this stupid video card and answer me if I can use more RAM if I upgrade the processor?

Safari 5.0.3 - 5116
Chromium 10.0.603.0 - 5088
Firefox 4.0b9 (20101226) - 4762

And then a javascript (sunspider) test, but only with chrome, since thats what I use. Chromium 10.0.603.0 - 243ms. Opera 11.00.1156 - 273ms. So looks like its now on par in the javascript and the best at html5 rendering so far interesting, also finally has extensions!

Hardware :: Setup Network With N And G Speeds?

Mar 8, 2009

I searched but couldn't find anything about this. I'm fairly new setting up networks. I have an AEBS with wireless N (NOT the new one which would solve my problem). I also have a Belkin wireless G router. I would like to set up a network where my new macbook can take advantage of the wireless N speed and not be slowed by my wireless G devices.

Current setup:
iMac (early 2006) wired to AEBS (G speed max if wireless)
iphone 3G wireless (G)
PS3 wireless (G)
Macbook wireless (N capable)

Is there a way to setup my AEBS so only the macbook sees it so it gets full wireless N speeds then use the Belkin G router for the other devices?

IMac :: How To Reduce Minimum Fan Speeds

Jul 26, 2009

I have a new mid-2009 iMac 24 inch 2.66GHz. I work in a quiet environment and most of the time the computer is idling along. iStat returns the following fan speeds:
CPU 1200
HDD 1600
ODD 800

Even when I drive the iMac a bit harder - 100% CPU for an hour and a half - the temps only rise as follows:
CPU 60 C
Northbridge 68 C
Power Supply 71 C
and the fan speeds do not increase.

I value silence, and it seems to be unnecessary for the fans to running at this speed when they are not needed most of the time - when the computer is not under any load. With the iMac everything is right in front of your face. I heard about iMac Fan Control and installed it, but there is no possibility to set lower-than-standard fan speeds, except for the HD which can be set to 1200 instead of 1600. However, the ODD minimum speed increases to 1000 from 800.

IMac :: What Default Apple Fan Speeds Are?

May 7, 2010

I was having problems with overheating last night in Windows 7 in that a few apps started freezing and I noticed that the top of my iMac was scorchingly hot even when I wasn't doing anything. I downloaded MacFan and used it to up the minimum fan speeds, and it worked as I wanted it to. Upon rebooting into Mac OS X, however, I think the fan speed increase carried over and was excessive, because I can hear my fans going even when I'm not doing anything and the top of my case is barely even warm (whereas before it was somewhere between very hot and painful).

I opened up smcFanControl and it's reporting ODD/HDD/CPU speeds of 2000/2500/1500, but it also has those numbers as the listed minimums on the sliders, so I can't decrease them beyond that. I'm pretty sure I can get around that by hacking the preferences file, but that requires that I actually know what the default Apple fan speeds are. Can someone with an i7 iMac who hasn't messed with their fan speeds open up smcFanControl and tell me what the minimum speeds are?

MacBook Pro :: USB Transfer Speeds Slowed Down?

Jun 12, 2010

My girlfriend just got a new MacBook Pro and I've been helping her transfer software and such to her computer from my MacBook Pro. When I was transferring games to a USB 2.0 flash drive (it was only 25% full and it is 2GB), it was freezing up when transferring multiple things. So, I stopped everything, and transferred everything one at a time. Well, it took between 5-10 minutes to transfer a 50MB game! When I plugged the drive into her computer it took all but 30 seconds to transfer. Is this difference accounted for by the .14 GHz processor bump from my 2.26 to her 2.4? Or should I be concerned about this slow speed? My computer is little over a year old now and I've already had the logic board replaced.

My wifes iMac consistently gets 15-25Mbs download and faster uploads. It doesn't matter what browser I use to test the computers speeds, she has a consistently blazing fast and mine sucks.

Of course, she doesn't have a lot of applications on hers, because the bulk of the work is done on my MacPro. Is there some pref files that I can delete or other resolutions?
