MacBook Pro :: Getting A Program That Is For Taking Notes And Summaries?
Mar 28, 2012
i am writing notes and summaries for my exams and am wondering if there is a program that specialists in it atm for my exams i am using microsoft word but have heard there maybe programs i think i have heard of something called 'evernote' or something is there anything?
My school provides students with PDF versions of the powerpoint slides that the professors use in lecture. Many students print them out and take notes on them, a system which I dislike because that wastes paper, and I like to keep my notes organized on my computer. I currently take notes using Microsoft Word's notebooks which is okay, but I end up rewriting things that are on the slides. Sorry for the long winded intro, but my question is are there any programs available that would allow for the addition of texts to the PDFs. I know how to do it with Adobe Software, but I was hoping that someone could clue me into a simpler solution for in-class note taking. Adobe's programs are all have more features than I need on a daily basis, I would like a program simpler and more streamlined.
Has anyone used Circus Ponies Notebook for organizing and taking notes? I like the notebook layout, can you change the style of the notebook and color? I was using the notebook layout in Microsoft Word for MAC. Are there any other programs that are better then Circus Ponies?
My daughter is coming to the Mac side (my son-in-law came over last summer). She has previously used FileMaker for the PC for her virtual index cards--that is, for taking notes and keeping other information for her books and articles and other academic purposes. FileMaker really isn't the best for the purpose, and she's hoping that there may be some fellow academics among you who have encountered this situation. She is over her head in work and has asked me to present the question to you.
I am trying to set up my new Mac the way I had my old PC and one thing I am trying to do is find a place to put passwords that is easily accessible. I know of the sticky notes on the Dashboard but I was hoping to find something a little more secure. Perhaps some place that would sync with my I-Pod touch.
after my third Windows laptop in 4 years crashed. I need some help finding an app/program that I can use for note taking. All of my professors teach using Power Points that they post before class, so that we can take notes on them. I don't like to have to individually save a million ppts, so I was using One Note on my previous computer and importing the ppt files into "notebooks"- and then taking notes on the same page as the ppt next to each slide. I really prefer to study this way- it's much easier than having 20 ppts open on the computer. Does anyone know of something that could do this for me in a "notebook" type format
yesterday, my machine starting dragging along. granted, i had a load of programs open, but that's macOS, innit?
then i looked in the activity monitor and something stood out. cpu and memory levels were reasonable, but there was a strange program taking up 1.3gb virtual memory. "TrueBlue Environment" it was called, and i killed it immediately. the dock restarted and then it was fine. none of my apps quit. what was this?
can anyone suggest an mac os x app (or mac os x-supported software like OpenOffice et cet.) that will allow me to create marginal or anchored notes in a text document?
i am not interested in MS WORD, not out of any ideological dislike of gates or ms word, et cet. (although i do not like word), but i am tired of paying steep prices for it and upgrades and wish a simpler program for someone who writes, period. i do not need 90% of word's features (although it, and openoffice alternative, does have the "insert note" on reviewing toolbar i like - see below)
if anyone is familiar with what is called "critical apparatus", it would allow me to add what are essentially footnotes in a visible (Jer's Novel Writer) or invisible (WORD and OpenOffice) notes to the text. (btw: here is what i mean: [URL] and click on screenshot at bottom right of screen)
such a feature would be immensely helpful for some translation projects i am doing as well "to check" reminders within creative projects, from essays to novels.
i may be wrong but i don't think bookmarks are what i want and i prefer to avoid footnotes or endnotes (yes - i am selfish. i want it all) although a footnote is not so terrible a work-around.
i have looked at following options in respective apps:
postit/stickies type note - openoffice has a WORD type feature (like the critical apparatus popup window in url above) which is accessible but i would love to have a smaller simpler program to do this
marginal notes - i love Jer's Novel Writer for this but if you write a long note or lots of notes anchored to the same small stretch of text, these marginal notes become cumbersome and piled on top of each other in the margin, unless there is a way to do this i am doing wrong. (am open to suggestions how to use JNW better. i have not written to Jer - maybe i'll do this)
flags: supernotecard has flags but limits them to one per card where a card is funtionally synonomous with a paragraph. thus one can not annotate multiple words in same paragraph with individual markers
links: i am using DEVONthink more and more as a word processor with its multiple windows, database/search/concordance capabilities and extremely rewarding flexibility. i could use their links to separate windows but don't like this as much.similarly voodoopad does this well but same objection
separate windows: many programs facilitate a new window that could hold my notes. they are not anchored or easily tied to the text in question without altering the text, e.g., DEVONthink, Smultron, et cet.
i think i have looked at almost everything, i think, e.g., supernotecard, notemind, nova mind, tinderbox, notetaker (which i love), ulysses, avenir, z-writer, scrivener, smultron, textwrangler, subethaedit, mi, copywrite, bean, textmate (a great "project format" for composite documents like journal or book with chapters), mellel, mariner, JNW (which i also love), nisus, tex-edit plus, all the omnigroup apps, journler, storyist, writeroom, abiword, but may have missed something. programs like curio (which i like, along with omnigrapple pro) and mindburn are not really what i need either.
i guess if i knew enough i could write an applescript within some of these programs. but i am not very facile with scripting and do not want to take the time to become so. i do not think TeX et al. are the way to go and the same comment about time versus learning curve applies.
I have been using Titanium to burn DVD's. It usually takes about the length of the actually DVD to finish the burning process. Is this normal length or is there a faster program for burning DVD
MacBookPro / 10.5.8. I've used Macs for years but I've never felt the need for the Notes feature in Mail. I don't think I'm a dummy but my attitude has tended to be that the system software is something I have to move through to get to the graphics applications I mostly use. I want to use Notes. . . well, for making notes and for exactly what it says in the Help; keeping track of thoughts and ideas. Nothing fancy, I don't want to synch with anything; occasionally a note might be related to an e-mail message. That's all. So, I click the Note button at the top of the Mail window. . . nothing. I select New Note from the File menu. . . nothing. And I mean nothing; absolutely nothing. Even on my worst days I'm not so much of a dummy that I can't click a button or select a menu item.
I have a new Bamboo Capture Wacom tablet. I also have a Macbook Pro 13". What I want to do is find an app to take notes in. I know there are apps that change handwriting to editible text, I don't want that. I just want to be able to write and be able to save my notes (in my handwriting). I repeat, I DO NOT want to use a handwriting recognition software.Â
Info: MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.7.3), Bamboo Capture Wacom Tablet
I love the Apple Notes App on my iPhone because it has the ability to sync seamlessly with my MacBook Pro.Â
I prefer to use the Apple Notes App cause they sync seamlessly for me between devices (I don't want to use another program like Sticky Notes or such.)Â
I was wondering if it is possible to create a shortcut on my Dock (or desktop or keyboard shortcut to launch?) to these notes directly so I don't have to keep opening up the Apple Mail Client (Which I do not use)?Â
Pretty much i use keynotes to take notes in my med school class. Im your typical lazy american and want my presenter note collumn at the bottom to show when i boot up the program like it does with powerpoint. is it possible?
Everytime I modify a note in the 'Notes'mailbox iun Mail, an email appears in my inbox. Is there anyway to remove the email without removing the note from 'Notes'?
I have a 15-inch MacBook Pro, the new unibody ones, and I installed Windows XP, using BootCamp.
I made it a 29 or so GB partition, so it used the FAT32 formatting.
The program I tried to install is the eyeQ speed reading program, and the laptop exceeds every single one of the recommended requirements.
The problem comes when I am attempting to install the program, I keep getting an error message in which it says "This program cannot run on a computer with less than 64 megabytes of ram."
Last time I checked my laptop has 4 GB of ram, and it says the same thing when I checked it while running Windows XP.
My only guess, which I made while typing this, was that I should have formatted the Windows partition using NTSF.
I want to capture selections on my screen and add comments. Is there a program out there that will allow me to do that? I don't like the "grab it" program because it saves the captured file in a Tiff format instead of a Jpeg format.
So, like a complete idiot i downloaded a torrent file with a few thousand font files. i installed them all and it has bogged down my OS and taken over programs like Safari, firefox and entourage (which i use for email). when i change the font in the preference menu in the respective program it will change the size but not the actual font style. another strange thing is that safari will not load pictures now either.
i want to just wipe the hdd but i do not have a disc because i bought it used. i can take it back to the guy i got it from as he refurbishes macs but i was wondering if i could avoid the trip if any one has a tip or two for me.
I just ordered a new Macbook Pro (with Retina Display). It's my first MBP since 2007.I'm super excited about it, minus one glaring issue. My harddrive is the baseline 251 GB SSD. I've hardly used the thing besides loading some music and movies onto it. However, when I look at the'About this Mac' window, it says I'm using 51.89GB in Other.Compared to only 11GB in Movies and 2GB in Audio. It's hard for me to believe that the operating system takes up a whopping 50GB..How can I account for this Other section?
Info: MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012), Mac OS X (10.7.4), 251 GB SSD
I'd like to find an easy way to take good notes in the margins, highlight text, etc.Preview has circling and text tools, but they are very limited. the text font size is huge, and the circles have thick borders and are completely opaque. What do I need to be able to adjust font sizes, highlight text, adjust translucency, all that stuff?
my Macbook that is in my signature is currently saying that it will take ten hours to charge (See Pic) after charging for the first time in two weeks after coming back from a camp and I'm not sure what to do.
Just recently my MacBook (10.6.2) has started to take around a minute to shut down instead of about 2 seconds like it always has done. It displays a lightish blue screen with the loading symbol as seen below the apple logo when starting up any machine. The only thing I have done differently recently is started using an external monitor and kb/mouse. Although I have disconnected all of these and it still does it.
media event the MBP was not even mentioned. It was pretty much the new release of the iPad. The MacBook Pro released June 08, 2009. Obviously we can see that it has been over 6 months, and down to be an update.
My 13'' MBP is starting to act up and it's time to take it in for service. The display is not living up to expectation, but worse are issues waking up from sleep and unexplainable pinwheeling (during low cpu/memory/disk usage periods, etc)Anyway, based on previous experience with apple, i suspect they'll resort to the catchall new logic board solution they usually go to. My concern is that I've upgraded my HDD to a 500GB WD. Usually I would drop the stock 250 in there for the purpose of having it serviced and just put my 500 back when I got the machine back. The issue now is that the 250 is being used in another machine, and this would be a giant headache.
