I am trying to free up memory on my MacBook. I only have 3.25 GB left and I have to Software Update and I want to download some things from iTunes. I'm trying to free up some space so I can do those things but how would I? I need to use all the applications that I have on my computer, and I need all the documents that I have on my computer. So how would I clear up some space on my computer? I've used Clean My Mac and other computer cleaning stuff too.
View 2 Replies View RelatedEvery time I use my MBP alum a lots and after I close everything the machine gets and still very slow and I have to restart my Mac to refresh the memory.
My mac spec is MBP alumenuim 2G 2.2 .
I would like to notice I did not face this problem in the past with my old MBP 2007 4g 2.4ghz
So anyway I could free the memory or something instead of restarting the machine
what is the best way to free up memory easily? I have a fairly typical makeup of iTunes music, iMovie, iPhoto files, which is best to attack?

I've had no issues with data backup on my external hard drive since I got my iMac over a year ago. There was always plenty of space to make daily backups and last time I looked my data was backed up from about January.
Yesterday my backup failed for the first time. The volume saved to disk is 223GB and the computer says there's not enough free memory for further backups (only about 9.5GB left). Going into Time Machine I can see I've lost all my backups before yesterday lunchtime.
I've been trying to identify what I might have done to cause this and the only thing I can come up with is data capture overload during the importing of video from a camcorder into iMovie and/or Final Cut Express. Is it possible there are stray files left over from my video editing that are clogging up my system? I've checked out my Final Cut Express Documents files but nothing here seems to add up to the huge amount of data which seems to be causing this problem. If this isn't it then I don't know where all this extra data has come from... How can I find out where this extra data is which is preventing Time Machine from backing up?
Is it possible there is some problem with Time Machine configuration? Right now the configuration window reads this:
I keep getting the message that my start up disc is full - system will not me delete any files etc
View 1 Replies View RelatedIf I delete a file from a memory stick- it does not free space. This is because the item has been moved to the trash and it hasn't been permanently deleted. If I want to free the space I need to empty my trash. If I don't want to empty my trash how can I delete a file from a memory stick to free space (permanently delete just 1 file)? Also (sort of linked) - how do I just delete 1 file from trash (empty just 1 file)? The reason I like to keep trash for a while just incase I need to restore a file, if I know I will not need to restore it, then I want to permanently delete just that file.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI am going to buy an Imac soon. Most likely the with 4 gig ram. I was just wondering how many memory slots does an 24 inch Imac have. Because I have 2 one gig ram sticks that I wanted to add to it and didnt know how many free slots it would have.
View 6 Replies View RelatedMy Laptop runs slow and often spins when I open the browser or other apps sometimes and found the load average to be less than and also about 300MB free memory, till I notice swap as 40MB/256MB on iStat.
Questions:
1. How do I find out what process is causing the swap? The top does not show swap, and the vm_stat does not show swap either like vmstat does.
2. In the memory what does the wired, Active, Inactive memory mean? The only value that makes sense is Free.
I just experienced something totally weird on my Snow Leopard. It starts suddenly dropping in the free memory (green) in my activity monitor with around 10 MB per second and the inactive (purple) memory grows. And it doesn't stop until it hits 10 free MB.

I have a Black MacBook (Early 2008). I think that I still have the factory standard RAM sticks (I bought the Mac used from a friend). I noticed today that I am running on only one gig of RAM even though I have two gigs of memory.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a iMac DV G3/500 (Special Edition) from summer 2000. Anyway, I am using Mac OS 10.2.8. Recently, my start up disk's memory has gone done from 1.2 GB available free space to 668MB (currently). I haven't saved anything on this disk so I can not understand why this memory has dissappeared. I have also had icons on the start up menu disappear. Could someone please tell me how I can restore the missing memory?
I just bought a early 2009 MAC Pro and it came with 3GB of RAM, I ordered 3 2GB sticks of memory to replace the 3 1GB sticks that I had in there from Kingston. I turned off the unit, I popped the little levers and pulled the memory out of slot 1, 2, 3 and then replaced the memory with the new Kingston in slot 1, 2, 3
One of the sticks in is not working at all and I get the RED LED light no matter what slot I move that chip to. So I am running on 2 of the new Kingston memory chips.
Can I mix the memory and add the 1GB into slot 3 and 4 with slot 1 and 2 full of 2GB chips?
Also how to I run the memory utility again? I went to /system/Library/CoreServices/ and then I see the program Memory Slot Utility.app
How do I run this? I'm used to no spaces and I type ./then program name
I've just updated the os to 10.6.2 and my 16gb mac pro 1,1 only shows 8gb in the system profiler. The memory tab shows they're all working correctly but size says "2gb" where should be "4gb".

Yesterday I apparently interrupted Disk Utility when it was erasing free space, which was far bigger than the used space on my beloved black Macbook. Apparently the free space, because the program was interrupted, is seen as one honking big file.
This morning, the disk utility tells me that I have zero free space. Verify says I do not need repair. I checked because of all my sudden problems (I am unable to save anything to the laptop, unable to cut-and-paste . . . and unable to erase free space again since there officially isn't any, etc.).
Trash is empty.
I tried (based on advice in another thread) to reboot with the installation disk so as to use its disk utility program, but the installation disk menu offers "install" etc. but not (as far as I can tell) just access to its disk utility.
I plugged in my Timemachine external drive [WD MyBook], but the most recent "save" there has the "restore" button greyed out. That's scary.
I'm willing to do a complete re-install if necessary, but I hope that one of you has a simpler solution that will simply get my free space back.
is it possible increasing either on boot camp?

View 13 Replies View RelatedI think i got pretty luck here but you guys let me know. Bought a Rev A macbook air on craigslist for like 900 a few months back, machine came with apple care and a few extras.
Then the enter key was sticking up slightly more on one side so i figured i have the support might as well take it in. The key was sticking up from a pervious repair. So the took it and fixed it. when i got it back the keys didn't light up and the sound was gone. I called and when i bought it back they gave me a new Rev B macbook air with an extra power adapter. Needless to say i was very happy.
I have heard of this happening to other people is it starting to become common?
So, I'm checking the due date of my 17 inch and I see this....
Anyone else find they now have an i7 for i5 price?
I just got my 13in mbp a couple days ago and I've been watching the activity monitor since one of the reasons I got a pro was for the extra ram over the macbook. Mine seems to only have about 2.08 free while I have nothing running except whatever it came with since I haven't installed anything yet. This seems a little low considering the regular macbooks only come with 2gb how could they even run snow leopard? Am I missing something about reading the activity monitor or is there something I can do to free up more ram or is this just normal?

View 7 Replies View RelatedMy brand new MacBook Pro is showing that two updates are available at the App Store, one for GarageBand and one for iPhoto. When I click on 'Update' for these however, I get a drop-down box saying that 'you must have previously purchased the item being updated.Tap buy to purchase it now'. If I then tap on buy another drop-down box appears sying that my payment card will be debited if I continue. My assumption would be that I had bought these applications with the MacBook, did I not? Why then should I need to buy updates to them a day later?

I have a solid state memory in the airbook mac and want to free up storage space. Transfering files to external jumpdrives and putting files into the trash does not free up the space. The wording is 'MAC OS extended' in the format space when disc utility is opened and top title 'erase' is selected.

I'm new to mac and I've noticed that I can have 2 gigs of memory one day and the next I'm down to 24 or something!I've noticed that if I open a file in Itunes and then change the info that there are now 2 files in the finder, one with the old info and the new with the new metadata. Why does OS-X do that?!
Also, if I have 1 gig of memory left (out of 180 or so) why does it disappear to 0 if I open photoshop? I'm used to a PC running virtual memory and CPU but why does the Mac actually take away my available memory?I'm at my wits end here, it's been driving me up the wall for weeks!
I am in a computer programming course and have already downloaded XAMPP for Apache. It was recommended to use the eclipse PDT editor, however I only have the 10.4.11 operating system so eclipse will not work.
