MacBook Pro :: A Grey Screen Of Death Its Happened 3 Times?

Dec 1, 2010

just posting for some basic advice, or technical help.... I keep getting a grey screen of death its happened 3 times in the past 2 weeks, the computer resets ok and then works fine for a while .... but i don't know whats going on ... or how to check for any problems ? ? I never had this problem before, I have discovered a small dent in my rear cover near the CD drive slot, I dont know when this has occured, maybe recently ... but its minor... almost invisible ... the laptop hasn't been dropped or anything like that and I assume its happened whilst in my bag so no serious shock .... ..I don't know if this has any bearing on anything I got a report and have posted it below : it says its processor ? ?Tbh Ive found this laptop to be very slow on certain things since I have had it, esp when launching finder . or the dashboard, it take forever to fill in the information and finder takes ages to fill in the mb in each folder or to load the app icons and often crashes , which Iwouldnt expect with a I7 ... but this has been like it since the start so assumed it a osx bug ..., can anyone suggest anything ? ? or what i should do, i dont want this happening in the middle of working on a video project etc .

MacBook Pro :: Stuck At Grey Screen Of Death

May 30, 2010

About two weeks ago I'm using my snow leopard partition of my macbook pro and browsing the internet via firefox. My mouse freezes for a second, and then my computer just shuts down. I power back up my macbook pro to find a 'cancel or prohibitory symbol'. Strange thing is I can hold down option and boot into my windows partition no problem I go through all the motions suggested by the apple website, such as resetting the PRAM etc.. Nothing works. Flash forward to today. I finally get a hold of my snow leopard installation disc and boot my macbook with it. I run the disk utility and it finds that my hard drive's good to go.

I read online and it seems that the best option would be to install snow leopard again. I decide install it again, but about halfway through the installation, the installation fails and pretty much freezes. I had to shut down the macbook via the power button. Now, whenever I try to boot up my macbook I hear the chime, but nothing happens after that. I am just left with a grey screen. I cannot enter safe mode, single user mode, and when I try to choose the start up disk by holding down option, the arrow pops up to choose which disk to pick, but there are no disks to choose from.

MacBook Pro :: Unable To Boot System / Grey Screen Of Death At Startup

Oct 1, 2010

The other day my 1st gen MBP functioned without any probs, until it suddenly powered down. After I removed the question marks from my eyes, I offcourse tried to reboot it.

But it never makes it beyond the grey screen, sometimes untill the apple logo, sometimes not even that far.
Offcours I googled around first to gather some info before I decided to put this problem down on this board. I found this could be a HDD failure, but in those cases, with other people, it could be powered holding apple + s, and doing some checks that way.
Mine doesn't even come that far

I have a second hand 1st gen MBP with upgraded HDD and RAM, snow leopard, and coincidently since last week no more battery... so i may have powered down a completely unprepared mac by tripping over the wire, once or twice...

IMac :: Grey Screen Of Death Appearing Occasionally?

Jan 8, 2010

This has been going on for a while. It happened first a month or so ago.

I turn on my 2008 iMac 24". The screen turns white like always, but no Apple icon appears. It starts to make a loud nice again and again. Bip, Bip. Pause. Bip, Bip, Pause. Bip, Bip. Pause.

I turn it off. Turn it on again. Same thing happens. Repeat.

I take out the cable powering the computer and go to school. I put it back in when i returned and turned the computer on. It worked fine.

Nothing happened again until a week after. I was sitting working on the computer, when it out of nowhere shows the "grey screen of death". I turn off the computer, take out the cable, leave it out for half and hour or so, then turn the computer on. It works fine. Works for a week. Same thing happens again.

Now it starting to appear more often tht though, and I'm afraid to turn it on until i get an external HD so i can Time Machine, in case it will appear more often for every time i turn it on.

The guarantee is not valid anymore (never purchased AppleCare) and i can't bring it to a store and show them what it does, because it doesn't always happen.

I read that it might a kernel panic somethingsomething, and that i need to wipe the HD. Though that was when the computer had the grey screen all the time. Not just occasionally like on mine.

Intel Mac :: 27" I7 Constantly Crashing (Grey Screen Of Death)

Jun 28, 2012

I've had my iMac, 27" 3.4 Ghz i7 16GB, since Jan 2012. From my excitement of having 2TB, I put all my info from every hard-drive ever owned on it, deleting the originals with the faith that I can trust it till I purchase a 2TB external for the backup.

Two months later it crashed showing the 'grey screen of death' and got stuck with every restart on the welcome-screen (grey apple logo with the circuling loading graphic underneath) only with a new loading bar in below them. The service center claimed the HD crashed, and replaced it (and it took me more than a month going around finding a place that would recover the data before they could replace the HD)

I finally receive it after a long period of living on this earth without a computer (which is problematic for a freelancing graphic designer) and 4 days later crashes again the same exact way, this time the service center claimed it was a software problem but got it fixed.

I've received it yesterday again and I only downloaded trusted software (VLC, DIVx...) and did not dare transfer any old data and stuck to only surfing the net catch up to what life I've been missing out on. It is still crashing but restarting fixing it.

The only thing common with all 11 'crashings' is safari was open, and I really doubt and do hope that it's not the problem.

MacBook Pro :: Gray Screen Of Death

Jun 27, 2014

I've been experiencing the "gray screen of death" every time I've turned on my laptop. What would occur is that after I press the on button, I would hear the two dings and a gray screen with a metallic apple logo and a gray pinwheel would appear. It would stay on for however long I've had the patience for it (more than an hour) and disabled me from using my computer. After doing some research, I've tried everything I could besides for rebooting the computer to factory mode. I've tried doing a safe boot by pressing the shift button upon turning on the computer but this didn't work because the booting loading bar would appear and then disappear midway. I've tried doing a repair on my hard drive using disk utility.I've even tried reinstalling Mac OS X (Snow leopard), which was successful, but upon restarting my computer, I was greeted with the same gray screen and nothing appeared to have changed. I have also tried resetting the PRAM but that didn't work either.

MacBook Pro :: Display All Of A Sudden Went To The 'white Screen Of Death'?

Mar 22, 2012

My Macbook Pro display all of a sudden went to the 'white screen of death' as I've heard others refer to it as. I've tried zapping PRAM, resetting SMC etc. to no avail. When I connect an external monitor, I am able to use the Macbook without problem, so I know it is video card/controller/display related issue. I'm going to send the Mac in for repairs. But before doing so, I'd like to erase my hard drive so I'm not sending them all of my data with the computer. I've done a time machine backup, so all is fine there as well.

My problem, is that in order to erase the hard drive, I need to boot from the OSX install disk. No matter what I try, I can't do this with my external display. If I insert the disk, and hold down the C, my Mac never recognizes the external display plugged in and so I cannot see to get to the disk utility tools on my OSX install disk. I've tried using Command-display dim button, to no avail.

I've tried simulating a clamshell mode boot where I close the lid as soon as the boot starts (with the OSX install disk in the drive) and I get a kernel panic every time. Even if I didn't, I don't see how I can close the lid at startup and hold down the C key at the same time.

MacBook Pro :: Grey Screen No Apple Followed By Blue Screen With Vertical Lines?

Nov 30, 2014

grey screen no apple followed by blue screen with vertical lines. Graphics and logic board replaced <6 months ago. What to do? I held down shift, it gets HOT HOT and makes noises. (for safety mode) followed by a blank grey screen and blue screen. Then tried the other way (I think  it's command alt delete? I don't remember) and it turned from grey (no apple symbol) to blue blank. Then third time, grey followed by blue with vertical lines, not blocky clear lines that you can see if you are close to it.

OS X :: Gray Screen Of Death On Boot Up

Feb 12, 2009

I posted this in the emac forum, but since it concerns the OS....thought I'd also post here. have an older emac 700 that used to work, but now when I try to boot ...after the apple screen with spinning wheel I get the gray screen of death. I have tried lots of things, including reinstalling OS from a retail purchased 10.4 dvd. THe OS install *looks* like it is working until it goes to reboot at the end, & then hangs again. I have also tried booting off a firewire drive, again, hangs. I know that there are boot cmd-v or -s options that give readouts of what's happening, but I don't know how to pause the process & whatever messages of relevance may be present near the end disappear quickly when the screen turns gray. In the process I have also zapped the pram/nvram.....& have reset the pmu button. I'm at the end of my rope, as I'm all out of things to try. As for what I was doing when the whole thing went south on me.. I was playing with a newer Belkin usb wireless adapter & trying to find the right driver. I downloaded the Zydas zd1211 driver set, but inadvertently unpacked the 10.3 version instead of the 10.4 (which is what this emac has). It went into auto reboot & that was that.....gray screen of death. Coincidental? I dunno. I just include the detail.

Dec 31, 2009

I just picked up a Mini display port to DVI adapter for my Macbook Pro so that I could hook it up to my 32 inch 1080p tv that I use as my main desktop monitor. It works just great in OSX (though for some odd reason I have to put the laptop to sleep then plug it in for it to work correctly. Can't be on or off otherwise I don't get the full picture not sure why) but in bootcamp it instantly causes a blue screen. If I plug it in then reboot to windows I get a blue screen even before its loaded windows all the way. I assume this is a driver issue but I'm using the latest boot camp drivers.

Software :: Mac OS X Reinstall - Blue Screen Of Death

Oct 2, 2009

I had got my Mac a couple of years ago, and it worked fine for a while. Just here recently programs have been shutting down for no apparent reason. I had done all the updates until then. So anyway, I found my disks that came with the Mac and used the one labeled Additional Software & Apple Hardware Test. This test said that I had a memory problem. Then I used the disks Labeled Mac OS X Install Disk 1 to begin reinstalling the program without loosing any of the saved files.

While it was running the disk, I ended up with the "blue screen of death". So then I manually shut the system down and booted it back up and then selected it to Erase and Install. Still the "blue screen of death". I have done this several times now and as far as it has got is checking the system and then it gets to the Duetch language thing and then to the "blue screen of death". I can't even get the disk out of the disk drive.

Mac Mini :: Mysterious Gray Boot Screen Of Death

Aug 11, 2008

I'd been noticing recently that my mini would periodically give me the gray screen of death when I'd boot it up, but after holding down the power to shut it down and restarting everything would be fine. I didn't think too much of it. I just moved out of my old place and into my new place and now my mini is doing it much more frequently. I just hooked it up for the first time since moving and I had to do the shut down/start up process three times before I got into OSX.

Then I shut down OSX just to try it again... same exact results. It took three restarts to be able to boot up again. Does anybody know what might cause something like this? The only thing I can think of is that maybe something is up with the RAM. I did upgrade the RAM to 2x2 gig of OWC memory a few months back, but never saw anything like this happening. When the computer is running I haven't noticed any strange issues.

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Gray Screen Of Death On Shutdown After Upgrade

Apr 5, 2012

Today I upgraded a MacBook Pro from 10.6 to 10.7.3 and every time I try to shut it down or reboot it will go to the gray screen of death and ask to be powered down manually. On reboot it gives an error report.

Here it is:
Interval Since Last Panic Report: 2344 sec
Panics Since Last Report: 8
Anonymous UUID: 731B3211-37FB-4C90-9D90-C15739B5E84C

I've tried to verify/fix permissions/disk but that didn't work. I even reinstalled Lion, but not from a fresh install. I'm trying to avoid a fresh install as this machine is used by many different people and it would be a pain to reinstall everything that is currently installed on it. This machine does have Deep Freeze installed. Could this be related to the issue? Even though the kernel panics on shutdown/reboot Deep Freeze is still able to save it's changes and boot thawed or frozen. Conversely, I have also tried to run a thunderbolt stability update and it can not complete due to the kernel panic.

Hardware :: External Drive Triggering Gray Screen Of Death

Jul 11, 2010

A little while ago I build my own SATA drive using an enclosure from Addonics, and two 750GB Seagate drives. I had it connected with eSata to my Mac Book Pro 2.0 Core Duo, and using RAID 1 mirroring. The eSata card is a Wiebetech Express 34 card. Everything had been working fine and dandy, until one day I plugged the enclosure in, and I suddenly got the grey screen of death telling me to shut down my computer. After restarting, I tried plugging the drives in again, only to get the same thing. So after all manner of switching cables, eSata cards, and reinstalling drivers, I still had the same result. So I tried something else - I took out one of the Seagate drives and threw it in a Firewire 400 single enclosure made by Acomdata. After turning that drive on, I still got the same error message. I tried the other mirrored drive, and again, the same grey screen of death. So at this point I wondering if both my drives, with the exact same data on them, are completely corrupt. Neither one of them is making that terrible clicking sound that seems to happen to dying drives. But I can't fathom what happened to both drives that would cause such an error. I created a mirrored setup for the exact reason that if one drive failed, surely I would have the other one left. Can anyone shed some light on this situation? I am totally prepared to pay for data recovery on these drives, but it would really help to know what I'm dealing with here.

MacBook :: Install New Hard Drive / No DVD Drive / Gray Screen Of Death

Aug 29, 2014

I have never backed up my Macbook 2.1 duo before yesterday. While in the process of backing up I was using photoshop, and my computer froze. I waited 30 min and then decided to shut it down. When I tried to turn it on it will not boot-up, I only get the grey screen of death. I had just recently upgraded to Snow Leopard this week. I used an external DVD drive which seemed to cause issues. So I thought I might be able to use that to install a clean version on this busted drive, well nothing worked, tried holding option key, holding down the C key. I ordered another drive that says its compatible with my drive. Since the my mac doesnt seem to acknowledge my drive, I bought an external housing for my new internal. I want to format and load Snow leopard onto the new hard drive using my girl friends mac. then put in my macbook. I would like to know if this will work? how I need to format my drive in disk utility.. Is it possible that it is not my Hard Drive?

Another side note, I just upgraded my RAM from 1GB to 4GB on my Macbook 2.1, I did try and putting my old ram back in just incase that was the issue.

OS X :: Blue Screen Of Death At Startup / Digital Camera Raw Compatibility Update 2.3

Nov 8, 2008

My friend updated her 13" Black MacBook yesterday, specifically the "Digital Camera Raw Compatibility Update 2.3". After a reboot, she got the Apple "Blue Screen of Death", with no login window showing. Looking at system.log, there's a section that looks to be the culprit (this began after restarting due to the install of the update):

Nov 7 13:55:29 Philbert /System/Library/CoreServices/loginwindow.app/Contents/MacOS/loginwindow[31]: Login Window Application Started
Nov 7 13:55:30 Philbert /usr/sbin/ocspd[53]: starting
Nov 7 13:55:35 Philbert kernel[0]: display: Not usable
Nov 7 13:55:35 Philbert com.apple.launchd[1] (com.apple.WindowServer[50]): Exited abnormally: Hangup
Nov 7 13:55:35 Philbert com.apple.launchd[1] (com.apple.WindowServer): Throttling respawn: Will start in 6 seconds
Nov 7 13:55:42 Philbert com.apple.launchd[1] (com.apple.WindowServer[64]): Exited abnormally: Hangup
Nov 7 13:55:42 Philbert com.apple.launchd[1] (com.apple.WindowServer): Throttling respawn: Will start in 10 seconds

Nov 7 13:56:02 Philbert com.apple.launchd[1] (com.apple.WindowServer[70]): Exited abnormally: Hangup

Here are some things I've observed/tried, many from sources via the Internet:

- I'm able to login in single-user mode
- I'm not able to login in Safe Mode (hangs on white screen with Apple logo)
- I've tried booting off the 10.5 install DVD and running Disk Utility - verify/repair disk, this comes back ok. However, if I try to verify/repair permissions, it runs for about 10 - 20 mins then freezes. I let the frozen process run overnight (10-12 hours) and no feedback. I can move the mouse, but I cannot select anything.
- When the laptop is booted and on the blue screen, I can connect to it via AFP
- I've tried manually changing the permissions of "/", by doing - chmod 775 /; chmod 1775 /;
- I've tried removing the com.apple.WindowServer.plist and com.apple.loginscreen.plist files in case they were corrupted by the update
- I tried running the "installer" command to re-install the update package from the command line. I run it with the "verbose" flags, I get no output and the process hangs.

Since I can connect via AFP I figure I'll be backing the data up and re-installing OS X. Pretty lame though, considering this failure was caused by running a Software Update. Anyone have a last minute suggestion for me before I go down that path?I've attached the full system.log.
