MacBook Pro :: When Open 15" 2011 Version The Screen Keeps On Shutting Off
Jun 6, 2012
The screen keeps shutting down. Sometimes the screen just goes black randomly. It keeps on going black and taking me to the sign in. What is this? My mac isn't overheating or anything.

I Have a very new Mac, and for some reason, the screen goes black when I open it more than halfway. It happens to all the users, and even if it is or isn't charging. The brightening keys also doesn't do anything for it. I don't know if this is connected, but I also have half of the lights on at the dock, it kind of looks like lights on a stage..

I erase the macintosh hd drive as suggested, also did the ctr, command, option, p and r step and when i try to reinstall the mac os x snow leopard it goes through the process and gets as far as 3 minutes into installation and then shuts down. Even when I try to install the mac os x lion from the disc utilities screen it goes throu the same process and then shuts down and reboots. it constantly shuts down and reboots.Â

Is there any way to set my macbook pro to shut off rather than going to sleep? My problem stems around my family not shutting off the computer after they are done using it. They will simply shut the lid, putting it to sleep. Normally, this isn't a problem, but the computer then may go unused for days which then leaves the battery depleted. I cannot get them to shut off the computer, I could set the computer to shut off when the lid is closed rather than go to sleep.Â

I really dont know what the REAL defect of my macbook pro,it has always the same problem : NO POWER!, My unit shuts down automatically and doesn't turn on. The MagSafe's led blinks to red and green whenever i connect it to my MacBook pro . I brought it to a service center here in the Philippines for 3 times to be exact, the first time i brought it they said that the battery was just drained the same as the 2nd time. . And for the 3rd time they figured out that the logic board is the problem so they did replace it. When I received the unit, for only 8 hours my MacBook pro shuts down again, given that it is connected to MagSafe. I just bought it last October, and it is still under warranty..

I have a ibook G4 that's been randomly shutting down. It started doing this maybe about a month ago but it's started getting really bad lately. At first it would shut down if I unplugged the adapter. Not every time I unplugged it, but probably about 50% of the time. When I press the battery button all of the green lights would light up. About half of the time it will start up again if I just hit the power button but the half of the time I have to reset the pRAM. Lately this same thing has been happening except when the computer is still plugged in. And when in say shutting down I mean essentially instantaneously. One second it's on and then the screen goes black and it makes that turning off noise. Not a chime, but like all the fans and hardware are coming to a stop.

I have a MacBook which has recently been shutting down when it feels like :/ this all started a week or two ago (well not the shut downs but other issues that I'll get too), basically the fan I think has been knocked as it is bumping the top or something as the whirring is getting loud and it sounds like every now and again it hits something
Also CPU usage seems to be averaging out at 20% for Safari and 100% for HD Video where as it used to be very small amount for Safari and 30 - 40% for HD.

I just "upgraded" yesterday from a Power Mac G4 to a 17" MacPro. Among other adjustment problems, I can't open PDF files. The message I get is "You can't open the application Adobe Reader because it is not supported on this kind of Mac."
I've tried downloading the latest version of Adoobe Reader, an although it seems to download, I can't find it.
How do I deal with PDF files on a MacPro?

I was out at the Apple store this weekend and got a chance to play around with the new MBA air. My favourite part had to be the new 13.3" high resolution screen. I especially liked the silver bezel and the fact that it didn't have that annoying (imo) glass covering.
I think a resolution bump is a given for the 13" 2011 MBP but what about the other features of the MBA's screen such as Silver bezel and losing the glass. Ditching the glass would also help lighten the machine.

I bought my Macbook Pro 13" in 2011 March when the line was refreshed. About 6 months later there were vertical lines running across the screen, and it hangs. Once I've rebooted by pressing the start button it all goes back to normal. I thought it was some random bug so I didn't check it out. A month later it happened again, and again and again, although it was so random that I couldn't pinpoint when it would happen. I brought it to Applecenter. They changed the logic board. I brought it back and reinstalled new applications – it happened again, this time with vertical lines and 3 beeping noises. (I've got videos and pictures to prove it -- even took videos showing the serial number because some of them were skeptical if it was the same laptop!) I brought it to Applecenter again. They reformatted the hard drive, and I took it back. The problem remanifested itself after a few days.I brought it back to Applecenter AGAIN. They did hardware testing, etc and couldn't find anything wrong with it. The engineers told the people at Apple to do a zero-out (because it might not be done right the first time) I took it back. They said it might be a software issue. So I was careful to have clean installs of everything. And then it happened again. And again. They did not want to replace my laptop and want to further troubleshoot although it's been 3 times at this point that I have returned back and forth to the Applecenter.Tech people told me to do a partition and watch out if it happens on the clean install. I think it's not a software issue at this point, but I am very frustrated. I can't just keep waiting for the clean install to mess up – I need to work and all my applications are on the other partition! Â

I have just updated my Adobe Reader and now I can't download and open pdf files anymore.
I tried going through the preferences in Reader, but it says that the setting is tied in with 'security administration' settings on Mac OS X.
I have not actually changed anything in the settings so am assuming that this is something to do with the most recent update to either Adobe Reader or OS X security.

I'm trying to figure out what happened, and what is wrong, with my computer screen. I know it's not a dead pixel, since it's still visable. It's like a burned image, like you would get on a TV. I didn't do any physical damage to it, I know that for sure. Here's a photo. It's the ghosty off-white area that's on the left hand side of the black rectangle. (I made it back so you can see it better on camera, it's not the problem).Â

I would LOVE to have an Apple screen , but its simply out of my financial league at the moment. So I am currently looking at 2 Dell screens, one 23" and one 24". What I am wanting to know is, does the display port on my MBP (early 2011, bog standard basic 13") carry sound with it if I am not using Thunderbolt, or will I need to plug something into the headphone jack to get sound. Its not something I need *all* the time, just occasionally, so its not a huge deal if it wont do it, I'll simply use a headset for those times. The input options on the Dells are DVI, VGA and Display Port. No HDMI on the models I'm considering (perhaps I should consider one, for this?)Â

I switched out my HDD for an SSD and switched out my superdrive for the HDD. It was working fine for the past 6 months or so.Â
So, yesterday I plugged in my Macbook and started it up from hibernation. I then proceeded to launch chrome and as it tried to restore my last session (with like 5 or 6 YouTube tabs), it crashed. I tried closing it and re-opening it, but no cigar. I then thought to just open safari, but a no network detected warning came up. When trying to resolve that, an "unapproved caller" error came up.Â
I then tried to restore my computer from a TM backup, but was unable to due to it being unable to unmount the drive, then I tried just erasing the drive, nope.Â
I then decided to take the dang SSD out of the internal SATA connector and plugged it in through an external enclosure, that worked and I was able to restore my TM backup that way.Â
So bottom line, I can boot up from USB fine, but when I plug it into the internal SATA connector my MBP gets stuck at the apple logo. I've tried booting into safe mode, resetting the NVRAM and PVRAM. No luck. From what I've seen, it seems that I may have a bad SATA connector that needs to be replaced?Â

So I got the SSD and transferred with SuperDuper from my HDD to the SSD through a SATA cable. I verified that the SSD was ok before ejecting. Now, I tried putting the SSD in and at first it booted to "No bootable device." Then I did the Command+ option+ p+r and it chimed the second time, got to the apple logo and then sat at a white screen. I also tried command alone, option alone, and command + r. What can I do? It's a Samsung 840 EVO 250 gb.

So frustrated with this situation. It appears this is only happening since upgrading to Lion so that's why I've chose to post it in this forum. My screen has been shutting off randomly. And I've only been able to get it to happen when I use gestures on the trackpad. (I.E.: "App Expose, "Show desktop" or "Show all windows.) I say my screen because the HD is still spinning, the keyboard backlights are still on and the status light is still lit. I can't do anything but hard shutdown. I've tried adjusting the brightness, clicking, keyboard commands (force quit) and nothing does anything. I've been sending the crash report to Apple but I feel like that is pointless so I'm turning to the forum for a possible answer. I've inluded my specs below as well as a copy of the log that got sent to apple (in blue). I don't know if it will say anything to anyone but it's worth a shot. I don't think it's a screen cable issue cause I'm not moving or adjusting the screen when this is happening.

I use "Ctrl+Shift+Eject" to shut off my iMac screen (not shutdown) usually before I go to sleep, but recently, I've had to hit it 5 or 6 times before it actually turns off the screen. It also happens when putting the computer to sleep pressing "Option+Command+Eject".

i just had the unfortunate incident of someone touching my screen with an object. i dont think it scratched but it led me to researching if the glass is scratch resistant and trying to learn more about the glass itself. ive read that it is gorilla glass which i think is very scratch resistant but that i believe is not confirmed. Â Â
can anyone shed light on the LCD glass they use and if it is able to withstand minor bumps/nicks/taps/ from objects like pen-caps, or a paper clip hitting it etc etc??im looking for specific info like its actual properties, makeup and scratch threshold. Â

I am fairly new to the Mac world and have been using Entourage flawlessly for my needs. I upgraded to day to Office 2011 and am having nothing but trouble with Outlook. Every time I try to open a new mail or create and email or really just click on anything, I get the spinning wheel. At this point it is rendering it unusable. I have tried removing the account and reinstalling it.
