MacBook Pro :: What Causes A Non-functioning Human Interface
Nov 18, 2010
sleep the missing keyboard window decided to popped up, not something I'd expect from a laptop! And if you think that's bad, the mouse one appeared right after!!
So I can only guess the damn trackpad packed in resulting to a non-functioning keyboard ; and to verify, the USB device has vanished from the system profiler along with the preference control panel!!! Thankfully Apple had some sense, they didn't wire everything through the trackpad as the blue-tooth and power button still functions

I have a macbook air which I bought on ebay a few months ago - it was a few months old when I bought it. I am absolutely delighted with it in general (I was a PC user until then...) but a few days ago the number eight key stopped working. The rest of the keyboard still works fine. As far as I know nothing has been spilt on the keyboard but I suppose it's not out of the question that some crumbs or something have got in...
Anyway, I have an appointment at the Apple store in a few days, but I'd be really grateful for some informed opinion about what to expect.
For example, is this likely to require replacement of the keyboard? If so, am I right in thinking that with the Air that would involve replacing the whole upper body (if that's the right description) as keyboard, trackpad etc all seem to be one unit.
And if so, is that the kind of job that involves the machine being sent away - or are they likely to be able to fix it in store?

I just got the USB Battleship that was featured in this Gizmodo article: [URL]
I plugged my printer, card reader, external hard drive, my backup hard drive into it and the drives made clicking sounds and didn't appear on my desktop. So I unplugged them and tried the ports on my MBP. It worked so the USB battleship wasn't functioning. What could be the problem? Not enough power?

Keyboard illumination is suddenly not functioning. Auto-illumination is still checked in Keyboard System Preference. Manual control (F5/F6)does not function. There is now a circle with a diagonal line below the on-screen illumination graphic when F5 or F6 is pressed.

I have an unibody aluminium MacBook. (The 13 inch model - before Apple changed the specs and re-released it as a "MacBook Pro").
I've been trying to narrate a voiceover in iMovie today, and the sound quality from the internal microphone is terrible! Muffled and ringing machine noise in the background. I've tried changing settings. I've tried running it off the battery instead of the power supply - in case it was related in interference from the power supply. I've tried different software. GarageBand and Audacity. Oh - and the fan wasn't running when I tried to record stuff.
The thing is - I remember the internal Microphone working much better before. I've made a couple of things for YouTube, and I didn't have a problem then.
Is it plausible that the Microphone has gone wrong now? Is this a known issue with the aluminium MacBook (Pro)?
- If an external Microphone would solve things - is there anything I should know about what kind to buy? I don't want to invest in anything expensive - I don't use it enough. I know that Apple's sound-out jack is designed for specialised headphones. (Although normal headphones sometimes work if you wiggle them a bit). Is there anything unusual about the sound input jack?

I have a 2010 MacBook Pro 15" and randomly, just opened the screen to wake it from sleep, and about 5 minuets after being on the computer the track pad started becoming more and more unresponsive. To explain on unresponsive; at first the two finger scroll to scroll the page up was not working, then the pointer would not "follow" movement from my finger very well, and finally anytime I touched the track pad (such as just laying a finger down and not moving the finger across the track pad) It would do almost any gesture and was completly unresponsive of movement. I restarted the laptop multiple times, complete shut down wait about 10 min then start back up, and the track pad would be functional for a couple of minutes before doing above listed again. So I cleaned the track pad with a napkin while pressing down which seemed to make it work again and so far has not acted up again.

I have a new MBP Retina - 2.7 GHZ 16 GB Ram. Every now and then I am having my keyboard lose some key functionality - mainly caps lock, space bar, delete and right arrow, a few others too.It I have tried creating a new user etc. but it stays the same. It has happened while writing a word doc and today using aperture. In both cases it occurred while flying.Â

I originally posted on needing a reliable way to extend an open network so my Macbook's waning Wifi would still get some kind of service. Recently, however, my Macbook will not maintain a reliable connection for more than 5 minutes when sitting 2 or 3 feet from the base station, so buying a wireless repeater is obviously not my only concern here.
I would normally plug in the Ethernet directly from the modem, but my Ethernet jack will not respond. No connection whatsoever. I've read in other places that this is a logic board problem, which always means expensive or impossible. Is there another option?
I would send the thing in, but my warranty may have been used up replacing the hard drive when it fried.
I'm getting to the end of my rope. Is there a semi-reliable fix here? I have owned Macs all my life and have NEVER had this many problems.....
P.S. the reason I am looking for a way to maintain a reliable connection is not only for convenience. I'm working as a data entry station for a company and I need to stay connected to their network for more than a few minutes.

I've been having this problem with my Macbook Pro for quite some time now, and it's absolutely infuriating. So far, I've found no solution. As it is out of warranty, I am loathe to take it to the Apple store, but I am beginning to fear I will have no choice. I've got an early 2008 15" MBP with the NVIDIA 8600M GT 512. It spends most of its time in use as a desktop machine, with a keyboard, mouse, and monitor connected, so I don't notice the problem often. However, any time I take my Mac mobile, I am plagued by this issue. What happens is that, seemingly at random, the keyboard and trackpad will completely stop functioning. The only way to get around the problem is to connect a mouse and reboot, which returns things to normal for a few minutes, then it happens again. If I have no mouse, I have to force-shutdown, as the power key still works.
Sometimes the keyboard and trackpad will shut down all at once, and sometimes they will fluctuate for a while, with keystrokes not registering and trackpad motions not happening. Sometimes keys will stick (not physically) sending a character repeating across the screen until I hit another key. But, in the end, the result is the same: no input functionality, necessitating a reboot. Sometimes I am able to use my MBP for long periods without a problem. Sometimes it happens within minutes. It happens when it's hot, it happens when it's not. There seems to be no real consistency. For a long time I thought that it was a software issue as it never happened while booted into windows. But recently it has happened while booted into Windows 7, though it never happened in XP. The motherboard has been replaced recently, and the issue did not go away.

For some strange reason the dictionary screensaver in my version of snow leopard stopped functioning. All I see now when it slips into screensaver mode is "Quartz Composer". I can't even find the dictionary option in the screensaver settings anymore. I'm scratching my head on this one.

I recently spilled water on my macbook pro. The keyboard no longer functions properly so I went out and bought an external keyboard. Everything else seems to be working just fine except for the fact that it wont let me play ANYTHING! I have tried to play online videos, DVD's, itunes music, you name it and it wont even acknowledge it. The other problem that I am having is that the sound is permanently muted and it will not let me change this. When my computer was soaked in water I pulled the battery out and shut it down for a few days. Is there any chance this could have damaged or disabled my "players"

I recently noticed the 'play/pause' key on my keyboard no longer plays or pauses media while in iTunes. The 'fast forward and backward' buttons do not work as well. The buttons also do not work with other media programs (such as VLC) where they previously had. I cannot think of anything I have recently done to turn these keys off.

I have tried the following
- Resetting the pmc.
- Rebooting / shutting down, swapping USB ports.
- Verify HD permissions
- Disabling bluetooth (even tho this is wired usb mouse I've seen people mention this so just before you do!)
- Plugged the mouse into a Windows 7 Machine (sorry its not mine! :-) and YES it works fine!
Also there are no drivers for this 'Imation' wired usb mouse as its plug and play and on the box its states fully supports mac os 10.x brand new.

Today my Macbook has suddenly begun to act slow and the fans are running quite loud. I read online that I should try checking the activity moniter, and I did this, and a program is currently taking a large portion of my CPU. However, I am unable to quit it and I'm sure it is the problem. In one of the description fields it is lableled "root" and says "kernel_task".

Anyone have a good recommendation for a USB audio interface for the 11" MBA?
I have some nice headphones and would prefer to get some decent D/A conversion in as small a package as possible.

Most of the results were OK but the "User Interface" one. It got a 13 at 61 refresh/sec.
This computer is a Macbook Pro (Early 2008) C2D 2.6 with 4gb of RAM and the 7200rpm HD, and comparing the results in the xbench site there is clearly something wrong.
The problem is that I don't have a clue of what exactly is "User interface" testing and how to fix it, does anybody know something about this?

I'm having problems with Mail 5.2. I can't seem to get back to widescreen layout in my mac mail. I'm not sure what I did, but is there a way to get the 3-way split screen back? I went into Preferences and tried that, but nothing changes. I've read that once you go back to classic mail, you cannot get the widescreen layout back. Anyway, tried the Letterbox app. as well, is not working on Mail 5.2.

I work NOC Support / Operations for a decent sized provider in the midwest-ish area. I configure radios, routers, switches, etc CONSTANTLY. I need an ethernet interface. So I have the ThunderBolt Gig Ethernet adapters. Â
I plug one in every day, running DHCP, no issues. Then I roll it over to a private IP to setup a radio. At this point, the interface is dropping (because I am rebooting the radio over and over), and I have to change the IP on it consistently. After making four to six changes, the interface just stops responding. In the network prefs, its red, as if it doesn't have a good working connection. I open the network anaylizer, and it shows me that the interface is up, with no IP. Â
I've disabled the interface by turning it off, nothing. I have unplugged the adapter and the cable, network anaylizer still shows the port up and negotiated at 100/1000, but theres nothing there...

I'm wondering if I somehow have a bad firewire chip in my MBP. It hasn't been able to work with firewire audio interfaces.
- I tried a Metric Halo ULN 2 which loses sync with it's audio. It will be fine for a few minutes with itunes but then becomes distorted and ringy as if it's lost it's audio sync.
- Random kernel panics while using Logic 9, Garageband 11 with an Apogee Duet - all software fully updated. One time it froze while not doing anything - logic was simply open and sitting there. Using iTunes through the Duet seems fine.
- Pops and crackles using Presonus Firestudio.
I've tried wiping my software and reinstalling everything. I'm using a MBP 5,3 2.8Ghz Core 2 Duo 4GB RAM, Snow Leopard (10.6.5) with the latest updates. I'm going to try an Apogee One which is USB, but I'd really like to use a firewire interface. If there's something wrong with my firewire port, I'd like it taken care of. My machine is under applecare 3 year warranty. I don't think this is an easy thing to prove though.

if anyone has written anything to make it work with other Macs yet? Anyone figure out what restricts it from working with other machines? I would love to replace the beast of an external drive I have with this beautiful piece of work. I don't use the external a lot but enough I want one around. At the same time anyone figure out how to make the GUI interface of remote disk work with other machines? I know there is way to remote disk anything and have done it before but the GUI they added to this service is beatiful for the MBA. I would love to be able to use either of these things with out the MBA.

I have a MacBook Pro (just got it this year) and I need a portable external hard drive. I also want to use it on my PC. Which interface would you suggest? I am not sure which connections my PC has but I know it has USB 3.0. Is there an interface on my MacBook that's faster than USB 3.0? If so, I might forget about connecting it to my PC, assuming it's significantly faster.
