MacBook Pro :: Upgrade 10.5.8 To 10.6 Without Disc
Apr 20, 2012
I currently have an early 2008 MacBook Pro running 10.5.8.  For various reasons such as software needs, I need to upgrade to at least 10.6. Â
However, and here's the kicker, my CD drive no longer functions. Therefore, purchasing the physical software would be kind of useless at this point. Â
I'm also well out of the AppleCare agreement. Â

I went to BB and bought the upgrade for my MBP running Leopard but I decided I would try to install it on my Tiger running iMac almost possitive it would not work. It however worked and even installed faster (1/3 the time) of my MBP with more Ram and better processor. So it is definitely done

A few days ago one of my Macbooks crashed for an unknown reason. I tried running the Disc Utility and tried to "Repair" the disc, but it said it didn't find any errors.
I found the disc that came with that particular macbook and I formatted the hard drive and reinstalled the OS. I ran the system updates and now I'm currently running 10.4.11
I recently purchased a new apple computer and it came with an Install DVD for OSX 10.6.1
Is it possible to update/upgrade my operating system with a disc that didn't come with it? I tried putting in the 10.6.1 disc, and when I click INSTALL MAC OSX, it'll say it needs to restart.
I click restart, and then when it reboots, it simply says (something along the lines of) "Cannot install at this time" and gives me an option to RESTART.
Is there a way around this? I'd like to have the latest version of OSX on this machine, but I can't find a way to get it installed from the discs I have.

I'm trying to make back ups of my originally purchased system discs so that I can use those to do any restores of my system any keep the originals in a safe place. I'm not quite sure what i need to do to successfully do this. Can someone please help me out. I Have 2 different macs that I can use to burn dvd's on but not sure if the drive can do this since I think that I might have to burn dbl layer discs. My iMac says it is a MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-85J and specs DVD-Write:-R, -R DL, -RW, +R, +R DL, +RW. Any info would be great.

I've been trying on and off for the past two years to install Windows on my Mid-Late 2008 MBP (C2D,10.5.8). The first time I tried it, I partitioned fine, got XP installed and went to install drivers from my OSX disc, but there were some errors and I couldn't get the trackpad/other essential drivers installed, even when I downloaded the drivers direct and put them on via USB or from the Mac partition. So I tried again a few months after having deleted the partition, but this time I couldn't partition it properly.
I just purchased the SL upgrade disc and I'm now thinking of putting Windows 7 on this. This prompts a few questions that I hope you guys can answer.
1. I'm pretty sure the answer is yes, but just to check, will 64-bit Windows 7 work on my computer?
2. Will the drivers included on the 10.6 upgrade disc be sufficient to install Windows, or will I need my original install disc (which would be a pain to get)?
3. I'm getting Windows 7 through one of my school's programs, and it'll be an .iso. Obviously if I just burn this to a disc it should suffice, but will it cause any problems with the installation via bootcamp? As far as I know, unless my school's been doing some shady business it's legitimate.me!

The interwebs claims the upgrade disc does NOT feature the "erase and install" option, and will ONLY upgrade your current Leopard installation WITH files to SL.
This would mean, that we had to format Leopard, and then install SL to get a clean install. Is this true?
I ordered the box set even though I have leopard, because most mac sites claim the above mentioned feature is long gone.

I am trying to install Snow leopard 10.6.3 to my laptop from 10.5.8 version I have. I am get an error code saying I am unable to do so due to the disc not being able to be partitioned. I've tried going to disc utility to partition the disc but it says that I cannot due to the disc being a start up disc. How do I upgrade my software?

Well, my question is very simple: I have a MBA and this other laptop from work, a crappy HP which is old as hell. I'm planning to use Remote Disc to reinstall my Leopard, since the upgrade to 10.5.3 really screwed things here, and I can't figure out why. Point is: instead of running all Leopard installation thru Remote Disc, I would prefer to share Leopard disc 1 over Remote Disc and restore it to a partition on my external HD, making a clone of it, which would install *much* faster. Has anyone tried anything like this? There's any Windows program which allows me to rip a Mac DVD to a Mac partition?

Currently have XP. But, I have heard/read that it is possible to do a clean install of Windows 7 from the upgrade disc. Or is that only possible on a PC? If so, how would I go about wiping XP off and then doing a clean install of Windows 7's 64 bit version?

Please take pity on a confused newbie. I'm running 10.4.11 (Tiger) on a 2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo 13" Macbook with 1GB ram. My school requires me to run Bootcamp to take my exams. They told us that we need 10.5 minimum OS and must have our 'original system discs'. The installation dics that I have are for Tiger. If I buy an upgrade disc to Leopard/SL, will that contain the windows drivers I need to install after I install bootcamp? Or do I need to buy a full installation disc of Snow Leopard (since I think you can't buy the Leopard full installation anymore)? Another issue someone mentioned is that both Leopard & SL require 1BG ram minimum, which is what I have. I'm worried the os will run very slow, but I don't really have the money to buy new ram and get it install (and don't want to crack the fragile top case) now that I have to buy the new software too.

I have recently tried to run Onyx which has identified a problem which requires me to run disc utilities from the start up disc. The Snow leopard disc I have only appears to offer Install option.
Q1 Have I missed something?
Q2 Otherwise should I try to run Disc Utilities from an earlier version of OSX

My G-4 startup disc is full and now the computer won't start up. I am told to put a startup disc in the drive and restart from it, but I cannot get the disc drive to open. I have tried everything, including copying over to external hard drive. I read that if you hold the mouse button down, the disc drive will open, but this hasn't worked.

I have a 2007 Intel MBP, running Leopard. I purchased the family version of Snow Leopard. When I tried to install it, it just spins the disc for a minute, makes the noise like it's trying to read it and then spits it out. All other discs work fine with my MBP so I know it is not the disc drive itself. I have all software "up to date." My brother installed SL on both of his MBs, one newer than mine and one older, just fine (with the same disc). I haven't seen anything out there with this issue so I wanted to start a thread to see if anyone knows how to resolve this issue (beyond taking it back to Apple and exchanging).

Looking at getting a 13" MPB to replace my aging Macbook. I am aware of the imminent arrival of the next gen next year, but still seriously considering getting a current gen.
Anyway, I am debating between getting the 2.66GHz version with 4GB RAM and the 2.4GHz version with 8GB RAM. I already have a 500GB 7200rpm HDD which I will transplant into it. Some stage in the next year or so I will look into getting an SSD and optibay for it.
I know that if I get the faster processor I can upgrade the RAM at a later date, but is the faster processor worth the money, or would I be better spending on RAM?

So last night, my Macbook started to show a folder icon with a question mark on it when I tried to boot it up. I tried to restart a couple different ways, using the Install disc, and when nothing worked, decided to reinstall OS X entirely.
Well, after the first disk finished installing, it said to restart the computer and be prepared with disc 2. Unfortunately, after the restart, I just get a blank gray screen, while my optical drive makes short repetitive noises.
Any advice on how to get the reinstall to work right?
